    What a beauty. I would have reacted the same way too and I'm a 68yo Grandma. My oldest machine is a Kenmore 385 I got on my 21st birthday. Use her regularly.

      It is. I was surprised. The models I've seen online seemed to be darker looking. I'm sure it is the color difference through screens. Thank you!

    I had no idea the tan one existed! And I cannot believe how much they sell for! I found one in a junk shop with a missing bobbin case for $90, had it serviced at a local shop where they rewired and fixed it up, and sold it to a quilter for $250 which just about recouped my refurbishment and part/accessory replacement costs. I had a hard time selling it in my Canadian rural town, and it took a while to find a buyer despite it being in very good shape. I guess she got an amazing deal, but I should have gone and sold it in the US!

    • @TheaStarr
      @TheaStarr  2 дня назад +1

      She did get a great deal! While I personally seem to run in the same circles that other vintage sewing machine enthusiasts do, I do think that vintage sewing machines are often a hard sell. I'd typically be pleased to just recoup and maybe make a few dollars on a machine. But it doesn't hurt to see what's in demand a bit further out.

      $6 for a white one is just as amazing! I kind of wondered if the folks who priced this one also thought it was a toy.

    I have a black and a white 221. Neither of them have the 221 badge on the front. My white 221 sews a nicer stitch than the black one. Unfortunately, I'm not mechanically inclined. I can clean and maintain my machines but as far as the fine tuning goes - I'm not knowledgeable in the least. I also have my mom's 201. It needs some TLC. She sewed the heck out of it and swore she burned up the motor but it isn't. It was in my garage for years until a couple of years ago. Mom was 100 when she passed 10 years ago. I hope you will sew with your new girl. You could call her Tanya!

      @TheaStarr  8 дней назад +1

      I was actually surprised when I saw the number badge on the front. I don't think I've seen that on other featherweights I've encountered. And wow, how wonderful for your mom to live so long and have such a great machine. I love 201s. They are really wonderful. It's the model that made me fall in love with vintage sewing machines. Thanks so much for sharing and suggesting a great name. :)

    Great find! I bought one several years ago I think from California, paid about $400 so they have certainly appreciated. My daughter has it now (I don't need two, I still have a black one). Can you tell me what the name of the blue project mat under your machine is? Thanks

    • @TheaStarr
      @TheaStarr  2 дня назад

      The mat I use is a silicone soldering mat. Mine has little magnetic sections that come in handy with tiny set screws that like to wander. There are many available on Amazon.

  • @sheribazar698
    @sheribazar698 7 дней назад

    Since the case doesnt match, makes me wonder if there is another mismatched set floating around your area...like maybe the family put the machine that "wasn't working" with the "worse condition" case. Inquiring minds. I definitely need to go thrift shopping more, especially in older demographic neighborhoods.

    • @TheaStarr
      @TheaStarr  6 дней назад +1

      I've ran a few different scenarios in my mind about the case for sure. Since it had service records (Singer Sewing Center Official) in the case and noting that the 221J was serviced. My guess is that the case was also a replacement. Perhaps it was damaged and since the previous owner took it in for servicing, maybe she said give me a new case too? The original owner has passed and I'm sure this was donated during an estate clean out. I think you're right about it being donated for not working though. I've had that experience previously. I've been given machines that had similar stories. This is a fun part to these machines. Wondering about their stories. And definitely, please check out your local thrift stores. You never know. :) Good luck!

  • @debbiel7736
    @debbiel7736 6 дней назад +1

    Maybe that is the original case? I just found a white one with the exact same case.

    • @TheaStarr
      @TheaStarr  6 дней назад

      The 221K white one came with this color of case in the US. There was a blue one and maybe one other color that was normal in the UK. The tan 221J normally came with a brown case. I think this case that came with mine was maybe a replacement.

    I don’t blame you. Because goodwill has their own website where most of the good stuff goes, and they sell on eBay. So our store here is pretty devoid of any good vintage machines. There is one at our local Salvation Army store that if it is there when my pension check comes in want to get it. But it is not that one. And that box is the wrong case for that one. But it is valuable and you may. E able to auction it off on eBay. Not sure you will ever find the right one though. Beautiful machine.

    • @TheaStarr
      @TheaStarr  6 дней назад

      Yeah, I've looked at listings on their online presence. I personally find that kind of rude. Why not put the local community first? But I get it, they are a business. I am "unfortunately" a collector at the moment, so I tend to hold on to most of machines. I wish you all the luck in getting one. :)

      I did not. Since I have the little problem with the pulley knob, I didn't want to do more with the machine until I get the replacement pieces.

    • @TheaStarr
      @TheaStarr  10 дней назад

      I was honestly shocked. Usually that particular Goodwill seems to shove all the fancy stuff in the showcase with big price tags. Someone goofed up that day. Although it was higher priced than their usual machine price of $15.

      Sweet deal you found! Congrats!
      My parents gave me one of these for my 13th birthday in the 70s. It’s a great machine!
      I was told the name of this featherweight color is “ashes of roses.” So poetic! But my parents were junk store fans, not sewing people, so I can’t vouch for the accuracy of this.
      I sewed on my featherweight for at least 20 years. It did everything, including buttonholes. (There’s a big old Singer buttonhole attachment that works nicely with it.). I have a bigger collection of sewing machines now, but my original featherweight is still the sentimental favorite.
      I agree you should keep yours on display in your treasure cabinet :)

    • @TheaStarr
      @TheaStarr  9 дней назад

      @@Alluvial. "Ashes of Roses" - kind of love that. Singer's official color name is light bisque - which makes me think of chowder. Hahaha! I will definitely display this one. (Thanks so much for your comment and story. I love hearing them.)

    People do not revere these antique machines.

    • @TheaStarr
      @TheaStarr  6 дней назад

      True. A lot of people don't sew much or at all now. So it makes sense to have no interest in these older machines.
