  • Collared Dove is one of our most familiar species, despite only arriving naturally in the country relatively recently, but how can you confidently separate it from the similar, but much rarer, Turtle Dove?

I love when pigeons and doves stretch their legs and wings, they look so relaxed.

That was a very informative description of all three birds. Thank you. I have lived in East Anglia for 50 yrs and sadly have never heard the call of the Turtle Dove.

I'm in the upper Midwest of the US. I first noticed these doves one winter about 10 years ago when I heard it cooing. I didn't see it, just heard it. It was confusing. It didn't sound like a pigeon or like a mourning dove. Also, mourning doves go south in the winter. It took me a couple years before I actually saw a collared dove & it was in town. After that I saw & heard them more frequently, always in town, never in the countryside. They are almost as common in town as pigeons and they certainly seem more vocal than pigeons. Pigeons are abundant here, but it is always the collared dove that I hear when in town, all year round, their 3 part call. They seem to prefer sitting on the tallest street lights to coo. The first one I ever spotted was on a street light in the parking lot of a McDonald's.

turtule doves are getting less caz of here in the middle east and most Arab countries specially Egypt they are over hunted by all ways most worst is the nets covering the trees which are catching thousands per day all along the Egyptian cost upon there arrival to Africa from 1st September to be sold as food :( something must be done for that really thousands per day in the migration season caz even exported from egypt by bedwins to other arab countries as meat

Hi, would you be able to please give me permission to use a segment of this video for a private bird project I’m working on? I will not re-upload on RUclips or any other digital platform. It is for non commercial use. I will simply present via screen share on zoom to friends and family. I anticipate your reply, Rachael

'for reasons not yet understood' - that's a rather diplomatic way of saying they are being hunted to extinction on their migration across the Mediterranean.

Agriculture and urbanisation are the main culprits on their numbers dropping. In fact, honest, unbiased studies show that hunting accounts to less that 1% impact. Of course this is an inconvenience to anti- hunters, who would rather push a narrative than actually implement policy that would have actual impact. Another huge factor is the unregulated and indiscriminate capture of migratory birds in North Africa, using Km upon Km of nets. This is another uncomfortable truth which many "woke nature lovers" struggle with coming to terms with.
