- Some of you are resistant when it comes to drumming to a click track, some of you embrace it. Master drummer Joe Porcaro said to me, " Never let the click tell you where the time is... YOU tell the click where the time is."
He forever changed the way I view the click track. From that day on, I embraced the click, and I never play without it. RIP Joe!
Although there are many techniques and exercises available to us, this one, in particular, has helped me land those drum gigs that require a click and has also improved my timing by 1,000,000%.

My tutor taught me this when i first started learning drums at age 15 (im 29 now). This is the first time i've seen/heard it executed so perfectly! Kudos to you my guy. That feel and groove had more spice than my grandmas kitchen cupboard!

I always feel that way when I watch all types of drum content lol then the truth sets in when I sit at my kit. I get overwhelmed with all the info I ingest and somehow simultaneously try to work on 100 different techniques... the. I walk away sad and defeated lol.

Personally, I think it is good as a beginning drummer to play with a click so you can learn to play and keep a steady beat. After getting good at keeping a steady beat and can do it without a metronome, I would only use it for warm-ups. Sadly, music today is very sterile in that it is done all in one tempo and usually played to a click. Music years ago was a lot more fun and organic in that they rarely played to a click, so the music was more feel based, and the tempo would slow down and speed up and give the music more groove, feeling, and dynamics. For me, as a drummer, I like to be counted in, so I know the initial b.p.m. then have the click off. That way, for various parts of the song, the tempo can be changed, which keeps the music piece interesting. Jam bands are great at this.

Man dude nasty, I’ve got to ask u how u play your linear/gospel chop drumming? I’ve been trying to figure out how to play gospel chop fills and playing, and watched other videos on RUclips, but I just can’t seem to figure it out! Especially when playing a liner fill and just playing in the pocket and just grooving! Like drummers like Sean Wright, Eric Moore, and even Luke Holland in some aspects with his playing too even though he’s not necessarily a “gospel” drummer so to speak.
If you’ve got any tips or simple videos you’ve got or can make on linear/gospel chop drumming that’d be cool! I’m more of a metal drummer but I love gospel drumming, pocket drumming, and just being able to groove with simple lo-fi hip hop beats and tracks! I enjoy and play to all kinds of music but have been more intrigued with metal, but I have a major appreciation and interests in other styles of drumming like gospel chops and stuff.

Glad found your channel...great teaching although you are a great drummer you are a great teacher as well. Couple questions. You have a combo of "real cymbals and V cymbals? Also, you prefer Superior Drummer to the Roland Brain? I have SD but it's always trouble connecting to SD, booting laptop opening the software etc when I just want to sit down and play...
Thank you very much! To answer your question, I do have real cymbals but I don't play them right now. I use both the Module and Superior drummer 3 for a variety of sounds. I get it, setting up and just playing can be frustrating. The TD 30 makes it easier because it has a built in interface.
