Hey Tom, I was walking down the street and saw a stranger with a Homeskoolin' t-shirt on. I said "LIL TOMMY FROM CLEVELAND!" and he replied "YOUR FAVORITE UNCLE LARRY" with a thumbs up. As I walked past, his wife said "who was that guy?" and pointed at me. He replied "that is a good friend of mine." It was a funny moment but also shows how people view the entire HS squad! Cheers from NYC.
Hahaaaaaaaa thats amazing
@@501chorusecho People recognize a genuine blessing and that is amazing for us all, Tom. Thank you.
@chris leamy I love that story, nice one!
Hahaha classic!
Hey my Husband is a huge fan of yours and watches all of your videos. He is disabled and not able to get out of the house much anymore, but has found his love for playing guitar again. People like you that post these "personal" videos have been very helpful to him. With his 40th birthday coming up next month, I know this is not how he thought it would be, but with your positive messages and informational musical experience I know it has helped him through some tough times. Thank you, Nataley Ball.
Thank you love....so glad my little show is helping
My car has broken down. I am waiting for the tow truck. I NEEDED THIS!!!! Xx
keep strong man. Uncle Larry is here
Good luck out there
Hang tough man. Take this time to listen time to listen to some “stuff” that’s been off your Radar for a while.
Still waiting ..... gonna sleep well tonight
Back home at 11 pm 👍🤘. Think I’ll watch this vid again before bed
wow i remember when my late brother put this on the family stereo, we come from a little rural place in spain, i was absolutely amazed, so raw, so good , so tight, wow from that moment on, southern rock, or whatever the fuck you want to call, atlanta rhythm section, allman bros, charlie daniels, govt mule, lynyrd...etc
couple months later i was driving my dad crazy about an electric guitar, that was 30 years ago...
a lot has changed , my brother is in heaven , probably in a joint watching Duane play..but what didn't change was my love for the music....
cheers tom, always a pleasure
Pablo Heredia *
That’s what it was, what it is, and what it always will be, long after this politically correct theft of heritage is gone, and one day, it will be. SOUTHERN ROCK
Gordon is a beautiful human being. I'm in.
"...on a journey somewhere." Wow!! That's an indisputable truth.
Ill be one of Gordon's first sub's. Great cat.
Thanks Tom, so much inspiration from this show..
One of the guys I work with, (electrician from Ireland), saw my pink floyd t-shirt on site today, started a spontaneous guitar conversation as he plays as well but left his acoustic in Ireland, ..long story short after some discussion about Rory Gallagher etc. I said, bro, no guitarist should be without an axe..I'm gifting him one of my many acoustics, a rebuild..tomorrow, it is the right thing to do, makes me feel good, just llike watching your show does..lol Thx
Thats the meaning of life my good man
And a bunch of great songs around that time. Back in those days, when my parent were still together, we’d pack some groceries, like sandwiches, cokes, whatever. We’d go to an outdoor drive in in Big Spring, The Jet Drive In. Before the movies, during intermission, and afterwards, you’d hear music on those big metal speakers we’d hang on the car or truck window. You could catch Skynrd, Buffalo Springfield, (For What It’s Worth”), Neil Young “Old Man”, “Pot of Gold”, Gordon Lightfoot, “Sundown”. It’s hard to believe music that good used to stay on the radio. You know how to bring back the memories, man.Thank you
John Barlow Jarvis - incredible keyboard player. Back in August of '06 I came to Nashville for my birthday. I saw that he was playing at The Bluebird on Mondays with Mike Henderson. I went and was blown away by his playing. I was use to hearing his "safe" music on New Age radio here in L.A. I wound up spending the bands whole 1st break talking with him - great guy and has his fingerprints on so many recordings. Thanks for that mention Tom, and thanks again for your contribution to the guitar and music world!.
You are suddenly my fav guitarist. Love to be a student of the Buk!
God damn, it is so inspiring to hear you play. Just so motivational. Thank you for helping us mere mortals, pick up a thing or two from your wisdom.
I truly cant get enough of this channel. Such a testament to how being genuine always works--especially when you have the experiences, passion, imperfections and endless supply of t-shirts, coffee, guitars, Rolling Rock, and talent that Tom does. I used to play in the NFL, and its amazing how many of the hurdles that Tom had to get through in order to be great (fear of red light, playing past perfection, lifetime commitment, watching/listening to what is going on around you, etc) that translates to football and other aspects of life. If you want to get good at anything, it feels like you can learn how Tom did it with guitar and apply it to what you are doing. Last thing, the song on "Homeskoolin Volume 11, Tom Bukovac, “The Power Of The 5 Minor” is so pretty all I could do was laugh when I first heard it, now I've listened to it about 500 times. Thank you Tom!
Les Paul and a Mesa Boogie with verb in the loop is all you need in life.
DC5 and Big Sky 😊
🤣
I’m convinced the 5 people giving a thumbs down to Tom’s videos are the same 5 people.. and yet they keep returning to watch every episode lol. How could somebody dislike ANY Homeskoolin’ episode?? Thanks Tom for the continued amazing lessons and insight.
Waves hand, thunder crashes......those hands, man, be careful......best vids ever
Simple Man so much feeling in that song . one of the greatest songs ever . thanks Tom great vids .
Just love your channel inspiring
Hey Tom its the mystery of music. Infinite melodies combined with imagination. That Les Paul sheds tears with its tone. Genuine keeper.
Very well said my friend
I love your videos Tom, and you are far too humble. Keep it up and thank you!
Love your channel. Thanks for sharing your take on guitar and music in such a genuine way. All the best. You’ve inspired me to explore more diverse chord voicings.
Totally dig this stuff. Thanks.
Makin my day better...thx Tommy
Keep up the good work Tom! you are a beacon of hope!
Love to here the rain outside, with your voice and playing its relaxing!
Great show I watch every episode 👏 what a treasure!Thank You 😊
Love floating down this musical river with you note flowing through note. Cheers Tom!
Many thanks for doing these videos, Tom! What I really like is how you re able to show new ideas and techniques that are just far enough out of reach to be inspiring, but not so far out that they seem impossible. It really makes it fun to grab the guitar and add more to the tool bag without being boring or tedious. That's a rare talent my friend, and very much appreciated.
Great playing, and that burst is burning my eyes right out of my head Tom!
My favorite Skynyrd song! Just subscribed to your channel a couple of days ago after binge watching many of your other videos. You have some great content and I really like the laid back garage setting.
This is getting better and better and better. When you drop that profound music stuff from one of your buddies I’m imagining I’m hearing thunder now!
I’m SoO Excited for Gordon’s channel!!!
I'm so happy about Gordon's channel. I can't wait!
Amazing again. Love you music lessons but I think I love your stories and experiences just as much. Once again. You are ONE HUMBLE man. Best to you!
Little Tommy, thanks for constantly hitting us with some serious wisdom, it's much appreciated! I know what's going up on the lift around my house this weekend.. Back in Black and the Young brothers for the album's 40th anniversary. Sure wish I had that 8 track tape I wore out all those years ago.
Your playing and the tone from that Bukovac burst are insane!! Wow!!
Hey Tom, I was about to start learning the chords for The Bed's Too Big Without You and your notification popped on my phone, but I remembered what Uncle Larry would want me to do, go learn that song by ear (started doing this because of you) and then come back for the video. Also didn't look to your playing so I can learn the chords some other day. Thanks for everything from Spain!
Today was sucking...bad. Then this video came in to save the day. Thank you so much.
I just listened to Simple Man four times in row... loud af. Good feels, amazing playing. Missed it for a while. Appreciate the reminder!
Yes Tom! Sun Valley shirt. I am here right now. I have been here for a month. I think I am moving back. If you ever come back I would love to buy you a cup of coffee, or have you over to my moms house. You are the best!
Hailey!
@@501chorusecho That's where I am!
That is a killer rhythm part! It’s amazing when you deep dive into the details. Groove, and feel are not accidents.
Tom, just wanted to say thanks for that lesson on one of my favorite songs. I've known how to play it for years but never really thought about how cool the rhythm going on behind the solo is. That little trick of using your pinky and ring finger when going from the G to the D is pretty sweet. Listening closely to the bass lines made me love and appreciate this song even more. Thanks brother!
Hey Tom. What an awesome intro. This came full circle for me. You introduced me to Lynyrd Skynyrds first album when you played Ain't the one on your show. I subsequently learned this solo from Simple Man and started listening to skynyrd. Thanks for a great show and sharing the love for music.
Greetings from Argentina! It is really refreshing to see how you play the guitar and listen to the casual talk, it is like being there having a beer with you. Cheers!
Thanks Uncle Larry, my rainy day just got better! Peace
Looking forward to Gordon’s channel. Another gift.
Hi Tom, much appreciated your Lynyrd stuff! I grew up in my native Scandinavian country listening to Lynyrd Skynyrd all day long. You made my day!
Nice! glad to hear that you checked out Ralph Towner and dug it! Hearing you say that put a big smile on my face...
Definitely as good as it gets. The end where you broke the solo down, it sounded like I was listening to an isolated guitar track from the album. The notes, tone, it was all just spot on!
Simple Man = Simply Awesome! Thanks for sharing the magic Uncle Larry.
hey tom, what an awesome perspective regarding chords and movement. super insightful. I'm going to try real hard to always remember that. it also plays into that old saying of something like "learn a bunch of stuff, then forget it all". Like the fact that fretboard and chord voicing knowledge is super important, but a bag full of "technical knowledge" and "stock licks" can fall short if it's not balanced with that kind of "next level" perspective (I can't think how to say what I'm trying to say, but I think you'll get it).
man I can thank you enough for doing these videos. you're a legend. thank you
"Molde" is in Norway, and home to the Molde Jazz Festival. Beautiful part of the world! Thanks for sharing your knowledge so openly!!
07:00 am in UK...What a way to start the day 12:58 mins of joy..just puts me in a great mood for the day ahead, thanks Tom.
Skynard is the best....And you, Tom, are truly inspiring!! I grew up in my parents' tavern in Western PA, and all I learned how to do was drink....Absolutely love your channel, waiting for my t-shirt & orange mug to arrive so I can play better!
Ty Tom
Hey mate, I've been playing for many decades, and you have inspired me more than another. What I have learned has changed everything, and the biggest thing is to move more when I play.
You put your body into it so much when you play; we are kinetic beings, we want, and need to move. It validates what we do, especially when done with passion. It's a powerful thing, man!!!!
Thank you for being a sweetheart of a chap.
Mike in the Suffolk Countryside (The English One)
John was playing piano when I saw you with Vince at Martin Tn. Great show! You guys played your asses off! Great times!
Hi Tom, first of all, love your tone, feel and energy, man. You make me remember what real music playing is about and what loving music really looks like. I'm not sure you'll read this but if you did, it'd be a privilege. It's a question about moving to Nashville, been playing on ships for a while and I'm looking to settle somewhere with loads of music and good people. I'm from the Canary Islands, Spain but been moving around quite a lot. Anyhow, thanks for your wisdom, sir.
I have been practicing the guitar for over 40 years, been through lockdown, been through every RUclips guitar channel known to man,Now back at work and your channel is the only one I am following..hey that says something little Tommy, god bless you.
The VCB portion of the program is the sweet and endearing part of the program where Tom acknowledges us mere mortals
Sometimes you can't see the trees for the forest. The simpler everything around them - I find myself rediscovering nearly every song I ever knew...and I've been noodling this riff and not getting it right for about a month now but I'm refusing to look shit up because honestly, my phone died like a week ago and I lost it. This pandemic life. Thank you. Trotting out the Peavey Mystic for this boiiiiiii
Hi Tom... Loved the part where you talked about playing an odd chord and finding what comes next by the tonality of the chord.. I thought that was MY guilty little secret. Shh!! Please don't tell anybody else!!
Love this channel man. Paul from England
Hey Tom...do you ever sit back and think..." The boys that I run with.."(Walt Wilkins). Thrilled Gordon Mote is starting a channel. You've started something that is going to benefit music for years. Thank you for that.
Thank you!
Work road trip... dusted off the tele , strat & amp... practice time instead of boring TV time in the evenings....all cause of you Uncle Larry! Thanks for what you do👍
Hey Tom... the movement from note to note you described reminded me of my Karate lessons years ago. First learn the moves, then connect them, and then use them without thought. Mushin, is the Japanese word for “no mindness” or “mind without mind” - the state you want to achieve when applying what you’ve learned. Thank you for everything you’ve been teaching and sharing with us.
Hey Tom, love your channel and definitely have learned so much and a big THANK YOU, the thing about today and how viewers have been suggesting music to listen to takes me back to my teenage years in the late 70's and the cool local record store where the owner was a musician and loved a chat and always suggested records he thought I would be into and was so cool he would play them of a saturday morning , I would save up my lunch money and buy a new record each week, at the time I was like most aspiring guitarist into Kiss and Van Halen and all the usual suspects associated with loud guitar much to my parents dislike of all things long haired, well by sheer accident I read Paul Stanley from Kiss was involved with a band named New England so I go down to the record store and on that day the store was managed by the owners wife as he was out playing the night before with his band and slept in as you do , well instead on getting the New England album , she ordered in an album called New England but it was by the band Wishbone Ash and when I got home I started to read all the stuff on the album cover and couldn't find Paul Stanley's name anywhere and then realised it was the wrong record, 16 year old me was like a sandwich short of a picnic most of the time but decided to play the record and wow I was blown away with the playing and to this day still have many of that albums songs on my driving playlist coming home from rehearsals or gigs , Laurie Wisefield is such an awesome guitarist and from your previous videos about phrasing and the way Laurie phrases and voices his notes and feel is something that has influenced my playing when soloing given I have always played in two guitarist bands and the other players would be considered the predominant lead guitarist, I was happy to play the melodic more phrasing stuff than shred and loved playing tail out leads on a fade out. It's funny thinking back how I got an album by accident and kinda changed my ear and styles of music. I would say you would know Wishbone Ash's music so its not a suggestion for you just how great it is when you hear something new whether by accident or driving back home from gigs back in the 80's and the station would just play song after song with no DJ and you hear a song and then have to call the state the next morning for the playing list lol, music is just essential i our life, I mean what would a wedding be like without music, or a birthday party, a movie with no back ground music, a TV commercial or just sitting in a bar chatting and not having a juke box in the background playing while shooting some pool, again thank you TOM we all truly appreciate what your giving us.
Thanks Tommy! I'm definitely gonna learn that solo now! You rock cat!
S K Y N Y R D ! ! ! I like how your guitar playing , everytime sounds different. I mean you can play many styles of music, with your own signature. But the difference between songs and attacks is very dynamic with nice unpredictable space between notes and chords. Love it!
Great playing....honest and real musician...I didn't know you but you have got a new fan now. Peace
Thanks for the inspiration for a song. I don't play really play guitar, but adding the idea to bass of "where do my ears want to go." Really helped me out. -Ben from Cross Plains TN
Didn't know where else to go with this so I came to my Homeskoolin' Class...I just heard that Peter Green passed away last night/this morning...Very, very sad news...I know without having to ask that our mentor Tom Bukovac - as well as many of my fellow classmates - appreciate what Peter Green meant to the art of playing guitar and to music in general - so I feel (hope) this is an appropriate place to bring my heavy heart...RIP Peter, your contributions to life and music won't be forgotten
Ok Uncle Larry, just thought you should know..your channel (and the inspiration it brings) Is responsible for me having purchased four new/used pedals, two...No...3 new amps (one is tube so I’m swapping NOS tubes like a fiend, to find-“The Tone”). Also, bought a pawn shop guitar (Swapping out Humbuckers on it) and a used P-bass.
Oh yeh..Starting to give free guitar lessons to kids.
Along with the Mugs and T shirts, I figure that makes you a major player in re-kickstarting the economy!
The inspiration you bring, has obviously been bubbling up for years..for such a time as this...We appreciate it!
Thanks for everything,
Frank in Tennessee
It’s hard to describe how important Lynyrd Skynyrd was/is to me and my friends growing up. Thanks for analyzing “Simple Man.” Feel free time pick another of their tunes in the future. Love your channel.
epic opening with "Simple Man!" You have truly studied all of the rock guitar greats and everything in between
Huge skynyrd fan here too! They were a Big reason why I ever picked up a guitar, at one time I probably could've sat in with a skynyrd tribute band & had little trouble because i used to spend days on end learning their guitar solos & I'd try to sneak as many skynyrd songs as i could into the set list of our old country cover band but that's been 15 years ago now! I'd love to hear some more skynyrd on the channel Good stuff!
Thats a mighty fiddle. Ive been playin alotta skynyrd too recently. Savin up for my 1st les paul right now. Excited 🤘👍🤗🎸
I thought for 50 some episodes that you had an upright bass laying on its side over your right shoulder. But it's a fan.
Hey from Gainesville and thanks so much for getting me back playing music after a few years away.
Hey Tom, that was so cool, thanks,,,
Hey my Sagitarian Bro, it’s the Sandman here! Thanks so much for today’s jam! I’ve been a Skynrd fan since Freebird first hit the radio. If I remember correctly, I heard “Smoke on the water”, “Hocus Pocus” from Focus, “Freebird
Farmland Cafe huh? I'm in Murfreesboro for a week, gonna have to check it out!! Thanks man!
Hey Tom you have some wicked bends and vibrato. It has so much life and personality. You can tell how important it is to you. Thanks
Man, I love me some Skynyrd and Simple Man is one of my favorites. Those guys IMO, do not get the credit they deserve. Four great guitar players were in that band at some point before the crash.
I did not know it was Ed King on the bass on that song. Heard Ed King talk about recording that song with Al Kooper. He said Kooper HATED that song but Ronnie insisted it was going on the album and told Kooper (as he escorted him out of the studio) that they would call him when they finished recording it.
You said it man !
"The Magic" is behind the solo ! I've always believed that and always will ..
I never analyzed it that close and learned something today !
In C, is there an E Flat
in there somewhere ?
Maybe the bass or root
changed?
We played it out and on the rythm I would turn on the tremelo on the 67 Fender Princeton and get the Strat all twanged
out ! Our vocalist nailed it and the dance floor would be packed !
"Feel" is everything !
Man, I can smell that Les Paul case from here bro ! I worked in an old pawn shop and discovered a 1921 Gibson A3 mandolin in original case with original paperwork !!!!!!
This was in the 90's but,
the thing had a tone from 50 ft. that just filled the room !
These bluegrass dudes from Eastern Ky were fighting over it !
lol
Some dude pawned it for $50.00 ?
I was assigned guitar sales and what a rockin'
time it was !
Man, Your videos are the best on RUclips !
I just wish that damn ad
would go away for blues guitar ! I'm a Buckeye also but did the road for 30+ years.. The best times were being in a new town and getting done in time to see the
other bands in town !
Here's to the old "Road Whores" bro !
Rolling Rock is my Go To brew when I choose to drink too ! ( got to be on ice tho) Heat index 110 today and I just might ice me some up bro ?
As an ol hippy from Pineville WV once said,
Be cool Joe Brown !
Wow. One of my favorite songs of all time
VCB in the house baby! Looking forward to Gordon's insights - thanks for the heads up, I'll spread the word.
Thanks again. Hand care!
I love the shit out of that Les Paul. It may be my favorite of all your tasty guitars you've played on the channel.
I saw Skynyrd here in New Jersey at Convention Hall. July 13, 1977. Allen, Gary & the New Kid Steve Gaines blew my 16 year old mind. All I could think was next time they are going to play the Garden. Sadly it was not to be. Thanks Tom .
Tom, Like you I grew up loving Skynyrd. So nice to see we have a common like as far as great guitarist. I remember playing 8 to 10 to hours a day along with Skynyrd albums learning. I guess one day you will reply to one of my VCB.. LOL Peace and be safe in the crazy times.
Wishbone Ash - Throw Down the Sword. Another great unison guitar solo. Love your take on that one.
Awesome stuff Tommy!
Cool that Gordon is gonna have a channel.
But I'm all about guitar so your channel is the shit for me!
Thank you for being you brother!
🐉💀👽🎸🎶🎵🧠
Damm Thomas I watched an April 24 RUclips video by Paul Stafford Cook, guitarist from Scotland, who loves you. Now he is good yet says he watches all your videos to learn more. Impressive. I found your channel through Rick Beato and Rhett Shull. Excellent!
Hey Tom Happy Day episode 56 and my orange coffee mug arrived today!
Tommy B! My favorite uncle! First comment on your channel, i must first say that you have single handedly taught me the most out of anyone on my journey with my guitar. I would like to suggest you listen to “pressure relief - Guthrie Govan” it’s a track that sounds so strange and almost doesn’t make sense but it makes sense in the best way possible. I hope you can take the time to maybe give your thoughts on the next vid? Thank you so much in advanced and I cannot wait to buy myself a Homeskoolin Tee and rep it with so much pride!
VCB...a few good ones! Much respect to Uncle Larry...righteous lesson! "Where's that heading?"
Both my jazz teachers could do voice leading so smooth, no chord shapes hardly, just moving voices. And one, Charlie Robinson, always said a chord is either V or I. Kinda makes sense after all these years. Thanks UL!
For the future

1:06 Hello
3:03 VCB 1 Voice leading
6:45 VCB 2 Live vs studio
8:09 VCB 3 “Total mood guy”
Uncle Larry, coming to Nashville in the Fall ( only of course if Covid lightens up) would like to visit with you man. I’m goods buds with Vitale, doing session work with him lately and also good friend of producer/mastering guy Brian Foraker. I’m from Canton Ohio seasoned player actually opened for Skynyrd in ‘73 at Smiling Dog Saloon in Cleveland. Let me know if we plAy a little. Thanks for all you do. Love your channel!!
I'm unschooled, no natural guitar talent... it's taken years just to get somewhere,.. however, I understand what you just said, about where the next note takes you... my brother has natural guitar talent and was a great professional.... my fretboard knowledge is still weak, but, it is coming slowly, like all of it has been.... obviously, I will be unconventional when I finally arrive, for the time being, I only have moments.... and then, the wrong note comes....It's been work, the journey, my natural talents lie elsewhere..... I too, appreciate your candidness and of course talent..... buy XRP, Tulsa resident ~Best, jj
Man, do I feel you! I'm the exact freaking way. I wake up every day in a different mood and it affects what I want to play that day. My all time top 10 bands. Allman Brothers Beatles, CSN&Y, Doobie Brothers, Eagles, Pink Floyd, Skynyrd, Stones, Zeppelin, ZZ Top (for tone, too). Now, throw in the solo acts ... Hendrix and Trower, and that pretty much covers all my moods. I don't give a crap that I'm not a rich and famous singer/songwriter doing my own thing. The fact that I can play these great songs from these amazing talents (and more), satisfies me to no end...and, I thank God every day for it. That's the hand I was dealt, and I appreciate the hell out of it. Speaking of loving Skynyrd so much, you gotta check out Scott Raines channel. Your channel, Tom, and his are my top 2 youtube channels for guitar. And, Thank you!
Thanks for not "digging deeper" that was awesome 🙂
