I love these things ! Old racer used live around the corner from us when I was a kid , and we always knew when a race meet was coming up because you could hear the TZs being warmed up . What a sound !! I recently rebuilt and put an RD350 on the road . I love it !!
Back in the day I ran a TZ350G engine in a F2 sidecar outfit, it was great as long as you threw pistons, rings and cranks at it quite often! (oh and clutch friction plates, usually one or two every race!)
Looks almost identical to the one I owned in Canada. Mine used to spit flames if the carbs float heights were set too high 😂 Classic super rare rocket!
I use the infrared thermometer during warm up to detect & diagnose problems. Also, on returning after a good thrash (sorry, gentle & responsible ride), that device can give you excellent information about the state of the whole plot. The absolute temperatures indicated aren’t meaningful because the influence of degree of reflectivity of whatever you’re pointing it out is large. But what I like best is the same indicated temps at the same spot on each of the three cylinders of my Suzuki GT motors, from the head to below the exhaust port. It’s also a neat way of scanning a machine you know well, looking for abnormal temps. Like swingarm bushes area same on both ends of the pivot bolt or not. Both brake callipers, etc Edit: exactly as these gents found, differences in exhaust temps are a giveaway that something is imperfect. You can detect this by hand, but the objective numbers are helpful, for example, after whatever adjustments they make, in determining are they closer in temp now, or not. That is a hard thing to detect by hand, as you won’t remember small changes to an existing difference. Until it’s pretty much identical, you know you’ve still something to find and fix! Really enjoyed this, thanks!
Joe, I notice that you always use the clutch for shifting gears which is absolutely NOT necessary and is completely OK to do, only release the throttle for a split second !!!
I am trying to see what colour the CDI boxes you have on it--as if they are red-3.2mm BTDC is right--but if they are black it needs to be 3.5mm BTDC,--information from the TZ Guru.
Hi Derek. Steve here. We set up the ignition using the information in the manual from Electrex World. They recommend 3.2 to 3.5. It was always the intention to adjust accordingly on a dyno. The setup does indeed have black boxes and maybe we will end up with the settings as you suggest. Great to have your input, hope to see you around the paddocks next season.
@@DSTRacing Hi Steve,, Hope you didnt mind my comment I was only trying to help-I am intending being there again next year--who will be riding it-- I doubt I`ll be able to keep up with it though as I`m getting slower and slower
Yes, the starter rollers we use are common place in race paddocks. It saves a lot of pushing the bike about to start it. Also saves our old legs from failing 😀

Hi, the motor on the TZ350 is a development of the original 250/350 race machines from the late 1960s that Yamaha produced to compete in the GP races of the time. This incarnation uses modified YR5 crankcases, this can be seen on the engine numbers. The bore and stroke are 64 x 54mm much the same as the road going air cooled 350. Unlike the RD series the TZ350D doesn’t have reed valve induction. The water cooled cylinders are cast as one unit whereas the RD has separate items. The same can be said for the heads. One other major difference is that the TZ clutch is a dry unit unlike the RD clutch which runs inside the primary drive and immersed in oil. Other differences are that a water pump is situated where the RD oil pump would be housed. The gearbox has closer ratios with a higher first gear. The crankshaft and bearings are modified to cope with the rigours of race engine speeds also. I’m sure there are small differences in other areas as well and there are people with greater knowledge than I that could give you a more detailed description of the engine. Thanks for your comment and we hope that our response helps.
@@DSTRacing The RD has a single head across both cylinders . I didn't know the TZ doesn't have reeds mind . How's the induction done there ?? They're similar alright , but the TZ is a different beast altogether lol !

Good advice that ; )
Sweet bike. I hope those socks hanging on the clothes line are yours mate. Unless of course your missus likes to smell like two stroke😂
Lol thanks for your concern
Bet the wife loved the smell of oil on the washing. 😂
Yes I forgot Sue ( the wife) said it was ok I can wash it again
As I did it in the first place ,
it did not smell that bad
Great job guys very rewarding when it all turns out “right”👍
I bet those socks on the washing line smell nice now 😂 a lovely refreshing smell of Castrol GT

Old habits die hard I don’t use the clutch when racing after starting
Or when it’s just about to seize lol
Two stroke socks now, somones for a coating..

It’s a TZ 250 proper race bike
Your vid is named txt 350
It looks quite menacing with the body work off. I've got an original Yamaha product brochure from 1970s and it shows the TZ range sans bodywork.
Are you guys racing it as well?

No problem at all Derek. We all learn something new everyday and I’m no exception. I’m sure you’ll do the odd race.

Is that a plastic tank lads ??
Nope alloy
Really like that starter. I guess the alternative is to bump start it.

You running Castrol r40?
No but the smell of r40 is fantastic it does take me back to the mid to late 70 ies when most bikes ran it
Is that motor essentially the same as the road going RD350? If not, what dimensions are different?
