I was an off the boat immigrant working at my dad’s grocery store where cool herc helped with security in the evenings. He used to give me invitation cards for the party. I was a nerdy 15 year old who loved beatles and disco but had no idea that I was living in something historic. I went off to college and hung out with ivy league crowd and had had forgotten about him till recently, with all the interest in hip hop history. Hi ya cool herc! do you remember me?

You never heard of DJ Smokey and the Smokeatrons and DJ Mario? Grandmixer Dst said you can't talk about the genesis of hip hop without mentioning them. The false narrative about who created hip hop is being changed and for the better. Lot of Caribbean people keep claiming they created it and it's not true.

@@undisputedtruth6176Fair enough, well do you have the proof or the fliers, video etc?
Let's stop the hate, we all know you had a lot of DJs in Brooklyn, Queens given similar parties..before Herc, but that is not the issue here, the claim is that he started playing the breaks, hence we have a starting point, for Hip Hop...a Hip Hop DJ. Now, of course, you had a lot of DJs playing Soul, R&B, Disco music... But from what I recall few if any embrace this sneaker crowd spinning on their back, or pop in, etc, they just don't want them in their upscale party....the proof is in Founding Fathers of Hip Hop. So unless we have proof, we should stop saying others were doing it too... I am not saying others were not doing it... I am saying if you have the facts, proof, and documentation.. Then come forth vs disparaging Herc and his sister.... Yes, this is Black American culture, it was done here.. Not in Jamaica... Jamaica has no claim over this....Just because you were a DJ in BK, where I am from... Don't mean they were accepting of the new tough form of breaking!

So I should listen to you rather than the legendary names who repeatedly laud Herc as being responsible for further developing the culture?? Nah, I don't think so. The fact that black people were throwing parties all over America means very little, as none of those people apparently had the creativity to come up with & develop the 'Merry Go Round' technique like Herc did. By all means celebrate the many other names who were spinning breaks back then, but don't just diss the person hailed as being responsible for the culture without giving any weight to your argument. You just sound bitter & jealous.
