    Amazing amount of useful info in 18 min; it will take a lot of time to unpack it and get a few ideas under my fingers. I know it's probably heretical, but I'm not much of a Vai fan-I admire him technically, but the songs don't really speak to me (I'm just not much of a metal fan). Having some the signature ideas isolated here for more general use has been really helpful (and makes me want to go back to his work and listen for these particular ideas). Thanks, Sam! -Tom

    That "crying sound" is a bit reminiscent of Eric Johnson's koto technique, though he does it without a whammy, in a very different way: ruclips.net/video/ljHviOLnF0U/видео.html. So a very different physical technique, but aurally a bit similar. -Tom
