Boromir is trashed by a lot of people for succumbing to the Ring, but they usually ignore how he normally behaves other than in the moments when the Ring is actively tempting him. He's a good and noble man, and he's always portrayed as being protective of the hobbits. He's the one who teaches them swordplay and has no problem playing with them, he's the one who urges the Fellowship to turn back from the snowstorm in the mountain pass and the reason he gives is that he thinks the hobbits won't survive it even if he thinks him and the rest of the bigger folk will, and he not only goes out trying to protect Merry and Pippin from the orcs but the first thing he tells Aragorn when the battle is over and they're able to talk before he dies is that the orcs took both of them and asks about Frodo before apologizing for failing them all. Dude was a real one.
Thank you! The only reason he even gave into the temptation of the ring was - and this is just a theory - out of desperation. His primary objective up to that point wasn't the quest to destroy the Ring, but protecting Gondor and he felt he needed the Ring to do it. Since the party was supposed to break at the Lorien (Aragorn and Boromir heading off to Gondor and Sam, Frodo, and Gandalf going to Mordor; Gimli and Legolas supposedly choosing which way they want to go) - and again, just a theory - got desperate in his desire to protect his home. Galadriel is really good at poking and prodding at people. She probably brought his desires closer to the surface than he was comfortable with when she looked into the hearts/desires of each one of them.
@@Tavora_Tiefling Yes, after Gandalf's death he tells Aragorn in Lothlorien that he's worried because the people of Gondor are losing faith and his father's rule is failing even if he's trying to do the right thing. And both back during the council of Elrond and when he tried to take the Ring from Frodo he specifically mentions that his intention is to use the Ring to fight Sauron and protect the people of Gondor and by extension the rest of the peoples of Middle Earth. So even when the Ring was attempting to corrupt his mind he was still justifying it by using arguments that would count as selfless. It kind of reflects what Gandalf told Frodo back at Bag End when he offered him the Ring and he refused it by saying that he would use it out of a desire to do good even if he ended up doing harm because, well, it's an evil sentient artifact that's not meant to do good even by accident or as a means to an evil end.
I will never stand for Boromir slander, so thank you for this comment. The man was under immense pressure from his father and the fate of his city, and the presence of the ring certainly amplified that. People tend to think his weakness towards the ring is especially HIM, but it isn't. He is simply human. Beyond the way the ring draws him in, Boromir was an honorable and good man.
What isn't really apparent is that Borimir is starting from state of things as they are in the last movie. He wasn't relaxing in the shire, he was already fighting Mordor. For him shit is already bleak and they are loosing.
During Boromi's death scene, you can hear a choir in the soundtrack. The choir isn't singing random vowels, they're actually singing in Elvish. The english translation of the lyrics? It's a line from the books: "I do not love the sword for its sharpness, nor the arrow for its swiftness, nor the warrior for his glory. I love only what they defend," For bonus hurt points- In the books, those lines were said by his little brother Faramir.
Details like this in this trilogy, it just elevates it to a level unmatched 👌🏽 and is the reason will always be loved by every generation to come!! EXTENDED EDITION is a must tho surely
What I absolutely love about LOTR is the movie quality is still there, it's a 20 years old movie but still better than 99% of the new movies we have nowdays

How to get someone to watch LOTR: It begins with ten minutes of exposition, then twenty minutes of an old dude's birthday party, then two hours later you want to watch six more hours of it immediately.
"Gandalf uplifting everyone" - Just a trivia from the lore. Gandalf has Narya, the Ring of Fire. And its power is basically that, uplifting people around him, giving them courage.
This is the manliest film in which the male leads all hold each other and openly weep. Aragorn is; respectful, kind, loving and ok with crying openly and still is as manly as they come
To me, he's the epitomy of a "proper" man. He embodies masculinity in all its strengths and beauties. He respects, helps, saves, cares, cries, defends, loves, does what has to be done despite the hardship, isn't egotistic, is humble yet driven.
The look that gandalf has when he hears Frodo say, "I will take it!" at the council is amazing. It was sadness and regret mixed with realization that he knew it was probably the only way.
That sweep of emotions across his face in under a second is absolute priceless acting. Ian McKellan has so many of those moments in these movies. That man can act! Everyone in this can act the hell out of anything they are in... but man... McKellan and Bernard Hill... a handful of others just stand on top of this already ridiculously overly talented cast.
Extended edition is a must for the next 2 movies. They give a lot of backstory and other nice scenes which really seem like nothing but make sense. Seeing the scenes which were left out of the theatrical is crazy to know they weren't added.
I’m as big a fan of LOTR as anyone but I genuinely think the theatrical version is a better movie experience. Let them enjoy it in it’s most digestible form and then let them come back to the nearly infinite buffet that this story offers
@@baddayoverdosed I cannot agree. I see some people say that, and I just don't understand it. If you love something, why wouldn't you want a version of that thing that has MORE of the thing you love? The extended editions flesh out the story and only make the viewing experience richer. The extended editions are just as "digestible" as the theatrical cuts.
I love your assessment about Boromir. He is such a tragic figure. He was always a hero, and he always fought for the people who couldn't fight for themselves. Even when dying, the first thing he said to Aragorn was that the Hobbits were taken. He is a character that has grown in me over the years.
It's so twisted that the more you value something, like your people, your city, the ring has more ways of tempting you by exploiting your hopes and fears. Boromir just cares too much?
At 1:00:18, the Argonath are two colossal statues of Isildur and his brother Anarion, who jointly ruled Gondor as its first kings. The statues were erected to mark the northern boundary of Gondor at its greatest extent, and are at this point about 2,000 years old. I love the details of these statues. If you look behind the figures, you can see the quarry marks where the stones for the statues were cut.
I love the fact that In the Making of the Lord of the Rings documentary, they show the two artists, Alan Lee and John Howe climbing around on the actual rocks that the Argonath scenery are placed on, working out the concept drawings. Wonderful stuff!
In the extended version Aragorn sings the Lay of Luthien to the Hobbits in the wilderness. Frodo asks, who was she and Aragorn says "She died.." Luthien was an elf princess who rescued aman, Beren, from an evil dungeon. The fell in love and she gave up her immortality to be with him. On the gravestone of JRRR Tolkien and his wife Edith are the names Luthien and Beren.
And both Aragorn and Arwen are descended from Beren and Luthien. In fact, Luthien's choice to become mortal is the main reason Arwen is allowed to do the same.

Instead of being punished, the valar listened to them, that led to a great hosts of Valar and Maiar And Vanyar Elves went to Middle Earth that laid waste to Beleriand. After the War Of Wrath, the valar rewarded them for their sacrifices. They can choose to be elf or men, including their children. Elrond chose to be immortal while his twin brother Elros chose to be mortal. He founded the Kingdom of Numenor. Only the family of Elrond can choose to be immortal or mortal in which Arwen did. Aragorn is the direct descendant of Elros, thats why he has a long life. The average lifespan of a Numenorean at their height was 500 years maximum! Now remember too that half elves are a common thing and whenever they did come together it was always significant !❤❤❤ Remember this is the SHORT version, there are so many moving parts that will make you want to dive into the books or the audio books or even do reaction videos to the famous lore videos by the biggest lore channels out there! And a clandestine angelic being who was Gandalf originally known Olòrin to those such as Galadriel who knew him when she lived in Valinor, Elrond also knew would be one of the only others who’d know this save Círdan The Shipwright(Oldest Elf in the world but even he was a few generations down from the original elvish peoples to awake to the stars) & kin to Thingol who also is a semi distant cousin to Legolas as Legolas’ grandfather was the close cousin to Thingol(same with Galadriel’s Husband Celeborn through his father, their capital within Lothlòrien was named after his father(Caras Galadhon) Galadhon being the name indicating that which belongs to the father. And a 87 year old Númenorean man named Aragorn!, a 335 year old Dwarven Prince named Gimli. Tolkien's lore is deep & vast & the Silmarils are at the center of it. The Star of Eärendil is the light that shines in the horizon both in the morning and the evening. It consists in a boat raised by the Valar and led by Eärendil, who carries a shining Silmaril while watching the Doors of Night. The Door of Night was a portal in the distant Uttermost West that leads to heaven, and/or the Void. Eärendil's ship Vingilot was taken by the Valar from the rim of the world, passed through the Door and was lifted into the "oceans of heaven". It has just been anounced by Warner Bros that Peter Jackson will produce a film directed by Andy Serkis called the Hunt for Gollum, where the whole story about how he got the Ring and how Gandalf found out it was a Great Ring is told in detail. It is still in the pre-production phase, so don''t expect it before 2026.

At 6:20, Hobbits live a bit longer than Men. They "come of age" at 33, and Tolkien says that they reach 100 as often as not. When Gandalf first greets Bilbo, he gives him a hard look, not because Bilbo is turning 111, but because he hasn't aged, and he looks no older than he did when he first found the Ring, at age 50.
Here's my interpretation after seeing this movie over a hundred times: When Galadriel said "I passed the test", she meant she fully experienced having the ring and its power and knowing what she would do with that power and then she turned it down. This means that she chose good over power. Maybe this draw to power was distracting her and she felt the need to conquer it before leaving.
Partly yes, she says she passed the test amd will diminish and go into the West and remain Galadriel Meaning she not only freed herself from the power of the Ring but also freed herself of the desire for power itself. Her background, which is to long and complicated to go into here, is that she was born in the Valinor or the Undying lands. She was on if the post powerful Elven women then and by the time of the LotR the most powerful elf in Middle Earth. She left Valinor because she wanted to see Middle Earth as well as find and establish a kingdom or her own to rule in Middle Earth To leave Valinor, which was forbidden, she was partly involved in the Kin Slaying although she took no part in the killing of other elves. After the Kinslaying and leaving Valinor, the elves that left were banned from ever returning to the Undying Lands as punishment, including Galadriel. The Ban was lifted after the elves hepled the Valor defeat Morgoth in the War of Wrath. Many returned to Valinor, but Galadriel remained in Middle Earth becuase she wanted to rule her own kingdom, which she eventually did. So when she freed herself of the power of the Ring she also freed herself of her desire to hold power in general and knew it was time for her to return to the Undying Lands after Sauron would be defeated
Deeper story than that. Galadriel is actually really ancient. But in her youth she was haughty and desired a kingdom of her own. She'd crossed some of the wrong people and was banished from returning to The Undying Lands, the only elf to suffer that fate. When she declined the ring and passed the test, her banishment was lifted.

Also not her own actions caused the banishment but rather the brother mass murder that her father ordered on the hunt for the Silmaril. "Some of the wrong people" yeah well how about basically the lesser gods (or higher angels depending on how you want to see it), but again they could have left if they wanted to but what angered the Valar was that they murdered their own kin while leaving. All Noldor who left with Feanor and his sons were banished which included Galadriel.
She had immense power now beyond Fëanor and her full uncle Fingolfin, surpassed Turgon and Fingon, surpassed all of them after living literally near to her 3rd cycle. 17,000 plus years. Older than the sun and moon. Sauron feared her

I love her comments about “fighting the long defeat.” How rejecting the Ring still isn’t a victory, in the classic heroic sense; how even destroying the Ring, and sending Sauron into nothingness forevermore, still means a diminishing for the Elves anyways. It is a lesson in doing the right thing, persistently, even if you have nothing to gain.

Theatrical > Extended. Musical adaptation and pacing is better in theatrical. Also there's some non-sense in extended, like the witch king breaking Gandalf's staff.
It's good that the Fellowship extended is probably the one that matters least. Not that it's not great, it just doesn't add quite as much necessarily narrative detail.

I do not know you guys, it is my premiere on this channel, but I had my first generous (loud) laugh of the day when she uttered "oh, kurwa..." Priceless. Thanks for the reaction! By the way, I feel... obliged to mentioned that Boromir is my favourite character of the whole trilogy. As it is said few times throughout the movie, "men are weak." As through the lore, the men were the only ones who actually fell under the influence of the One Ring. (Elves discovered the enemy plot with the rings, while the faith of the dwarven rings is more or less unknown. (though, it is mentioned that the dwarfs were too difficult to control because of their stubborness). Isildur got immediately corrupted by the rings and so was Boromir. It is worth mentioning here that the ring works through influecing thoughts of its wearer and people around, by promising them fullfiling their wildest dreams and desires. Boromir is the heir of the current steward of the 'last' kingdom of men - Gondor - but he knows himselves, and reminded by Galadriel, that his father's rules is failing and Gondor is weak, constantly under attack from Mordor. Boromir's biggest desire is to see the glory of the Gondor restored, for his people to be safe, so the rings tries to convince him that he can help him with that. But... As weak and phrone to corruption human's hearths are, they are also capable of heroic deads, loyalty and courage of doing what is right. Boromir eventually sees through the lies of the ring and rushes to save Marry and Pippin. (Gentle reminder - HE was the one who trained them, HE was the one who was carrying them above the snow on the Caradhras, HE was the one who grab them BOTH and jumped across the gap on the stairs in Moria, HE was the one who was aboard with them in the boats. And in the end, when Aragorn kills the Uruk-hai, his very first words were 'they took the little ones...'). He fights to the last breath, facing head on the danger and death without his trusty shield, even though he must have been very well aware he cant fight all of the uruk hai. He dies with his sword in his hands, with his mind cleared of the ring's influece, with three arrows ripped through his chest, with 10+ uruk hais dead by his feet. Not as Isildur, who fell for the ring, and died with three arrows in the BACK after the ring betrayed him. "Over my dead body." Have a good ride you two :)
As daunting as it may seem, you guys HAVE to watch the extended versions for the next 2 movies. There's so many crucial scenes left out that add gravity to the movies. An extremely entertaining reaction from you two! Looking forward to your next uploads.
guys, if you liked this one you really need to watch the extended editions going forward. I know it seems like a monumental task but they add SO much more depth and context, they are well worth the time. there's scenes that re-contextualize characters and give payoffs to characters that don't happen in the theatrical. If you liked the first one you owe it to yourselves to watch the extended versions.
shame you are not watching the EE. the theatrical cuts were made purely to make the movie work in theather, but those missing scenes are still absolute A-tier material. it's how the movies are supposed to be watched. and yes, 3-4 hours per movie is long, but with a combined 11 hours, it's what - a season and half of a regular TV show? it's really not that much if you look at it from the right perspective, and when I rewatch them, I always do it half a movie at a time.
Peter Jackson wanted people to see the extended (uncut) versions in the theatres, but Harvey Weinstein stopped him. In fact, Harvey wanted just ONE movie in the threatres, not a trilogy. 5 years of court proceedings - and the 'harvey weinstein orc" in return of the king (made at Jackson's specific direction) was the result. Too many people don’t realize they are arguing in favour of a version of this movies that was only shown in theatres because of legal reasons - not for artistic reasons. - Peter Jackson’s passion project team was forced to not show their full content as it would cut into what the cinema CEOs literally called the theatrical edition to get more screen time in and more mulla for themselves. It’s a such a nasty business. 80 percent true that money be the root of all evil. It’s the reason the real pumped out the EE as fast as possible in DVD format before the second and third film hit theatres to get back at Harvey Weinstein, again, they wanted people to see the whole movie which invites feelings of completion in one’s heart. But he just announced that’s he found 1300 hours worth of footage from a warehouse he finally got access to so we will see more specially made super extended edition cinema extravaganzas that no cinema would pass on the opportunity to ride on his coattails again. The EE wasn’t just for fans. He literally was adapting the books to film as honestly as possible. the DVD documentaries showed that they didn’t want to cut anything. And weaselled around things to create the EE. (EE is extended edition by the way! ❤️). Without the extended for the next two films I always say “Good luck missing the Boromir backstory. Good luck explaining why the cloak turns into a rock. Good luck explaining the elves that had explained their current situation since the first film. It all ties together good luck skipping the gift scene with Galadriel and Celeborn and the extra scenes between Aragorn and Celeborn & Galadriel to Aragorn!” It’s seriously needed for the film worldbuilding and heightening the stakes. Also, I’d rather have faith people have the emotional and intellectual IQ high enoug to understand it or shall we have changed the title to something else same as how JK was forced to change the title in America to sorcerers stone instead of PHILOSPHER as Americans don’t even know what a Philospher is anymore these days which is sad. Relating to that: Tolkien was very sad about people losing connection to their past and heritage etc!

The end credits music for all 3 movies is extremely fitting and a musical capstone that profoundly captures the mood of each film. Even the end credits music is perfect, attended to with thought and care - that’s how great every facet of these movies are.

@@b_s_productions4405 Its not the version they wanted to release. Jackson himself said he prefers the theatricals. They worked an entire year on each film to get the best cut. The theatricals are much more engaging films. They don't dilly dally.
@@DestinyAwaits19 The theatrical versions are undoubtedly the best version for theatrical release - as it is, they are really too long. I know I wasn't able to make it through the entire movie (any of the three) at the theater without a bathroom break. On the other hand, my reaction coming out of The Fellowship of the Ring when I saw it in the theater was that they really should have made it into two movies with just a little bit of additional material to make each movie about 2 hours long. And the extra material I was envisioning, based on my knowledge of the books, was pretty similar to what was added for the extended editions. Given that the extended editions were not meant to be watched in the theater, so stopping whenever necessary to take a bathroom break (or whatever else you need to do) isn't a problem, I prefer them to the theatrical versions for home viewing. But I wouldn't want to go to a theater to watch one of the extended versions unless they put in a long intermission somewhere near the middle. Is the pacing somewhat harmed by the additional material in the extended releases? Maybe, in some cases. But I don't think it's significant, and some of the added scenes are almost required to really understand what is going on in some of the other scenes. In general, I think a lot was done in the name of pacing that really hurt the coherence of the story. And that wasn't always due to things that were left out - sometimes it was stuff that Peter Jackson et al added in explicitly for the purpose of adding tension where it might otherwise be missing but which didn't really make sense within the story. By the way, can we just take a minute to salute the head of New Line Cinema who, when Miramax was trying to force Peter Jackson to turn his two movie project into a single movie, not only rescued the production but insisted on expanding it to three movies? From what I've heard about the two movie version I'm not sure it would have been very successful with Tolkien fans. Even with three very long (perhaps too long for the theater?) movies there was a lot that was merely hinted at. I've watched enough first time reactions to see how often that results in significant confusion over some parts of the story for those who haven't read the books. (And occasionally even for those of us who have, given that the movies don't always follow the books perfectly.) While I still wish it had been made into six 2 hour movies instead of three 3 hour movies, I understand that it was really a miracle that Peter Jackson was able to get financing for three movies. The result isn't the best that I can imagine, but it's better than I have any right to expect to actually see. And with the extended editions, I got something close to the 6 movies I wanted.

Too many people don’t realize they are arguing in favour of a version of this movies that was only shown in theatres because of legal reasons - not for artistic reasons. - Peter Jackson’s passion project team was forced to not show their full content as it would cut into what the cinema CEOs literally called the theatrical edition to get more screen time in and more mulla for themselves. It’s a such a nasty business. 80 percent true that money be the root of all evil. It’s the reason the real pumped out the EE as fast as possible in DVD format before the second and third film hit theatres to get back at Harvey Weinstein, again, they wanted people to see the whole movie which invites feelings of completion in one’s heart. But he just announced that’s he found 1300 hours worth of footage from a warehouse he finally got access to so we will see more specially made super extended edition cinema extravaganzas that no cinema would pass on the opportunity to ride on his coattails again. The EE wasn’t just for fans. He literally was adapting the books to film as honestly as possible. the DVD documentaries showed that they didn’t want to cut anything. And weaselled around things to create the EE. (EE is extended edition by the way! ❤️). Without the extended for the next two films I always say “Good luck missing the Boromir backstory. Good luck explaining why the cloak turns into a rock. Good luck explaining the elves that had explained their current situation since the first film. It all ties together good luck skipping the gift scene with Galadriel and Celeborn and the extra scenes between Aragorn and Celeborn & Galadriel to Aragorn!” It’s seriously needed for the film worldbuilding and heightening the stakes. Also, I’d rather have faith people have the emotional and intellectual IQ high enoug to understand it or shall we have changed the title to something else same as how JK was forced to change the title in America to sorcerers stone instead of PHILOSPHER as Americans don’t even know what a Philospher is anymore these days which is sad. Relating to that: Tolkien was very sad about people losing connection to their past and heritage etc!
"I love a strong female character" If you watch all 3 movies, you'll meet what in my opinion is THE strongest female character (and I don't mean strength as in power, but strength of the heart).
So much of these films were filmed in real locations and locations made for the film, they made the shire and let it age for a year before filming on it is just 1 example, it was shot in the director Peter Jackson’s home country of New Zealand. Saw these movies in theaters as a young teen, it was so epic, still is everytime I watch it. Glad we have a new fan

Love you actually delivered on your promise! One little thing I wanted to clarify regarding Gandalf and Saruman tho: Saruman is in fact not Gandalf's master, but more so a colleague of his. They are both Wizards and part of the same "order" (there is a lot more backstory to this, but I do not want to get into ALL the lore of Middle-eart), with Saruman being their quasi leader. Other than that tho, they are pretty equal in standing.

Welcome to the cinematic masterpiece known as The Lord of the Rings, noting will ever come close to it. Please reconsider watching the extended versions for the last two movies, they add a lot more context to things. 25:41 The Palantir (Seeing Stone) conversations with Sauron were what sealed Saruman's betrayal. The thing with him in the books is that while a very wise and intelligent wizard, he grew very very arrogant because of it and began thinking of himself as 'the only one good enough to lead the fight against evil' and along the years he saw his allies beneath him and grew frustrated with them. This in turn lead to the idea in his mind that HE must be the one in charge and lead everyone, 'cuz he knows better'. Once he started using the Palantir, he got in a duel of willpower with Sauron (which also has one in his tower of Barad-Dur). The thing with these Palantiri is that you have to will them to show you what you want and in a contest of wills against Sauron, Saruman was easily outmatched and thus cornered into allying with him (note how drained and weary he is as the orc workers come to him to receive their orders). 54:25 Very VERY well noticed. A lot of reactors miss the arrows pelting the Fellowship (granted, they are very easy to miss) and are frustrated with the lads not helping Gandalf out. 58:35 Correct, Galadriel basically is in a sort of exile from the Western Lands (a sort of Heaven on Earth realm if you will) due to some actions in her past (and that's one BIG rabbit hole to go down). Her rejection of the One Ring is in a sense a final penance served and will thus be granted to return to the West. Btw, on Galadriel, here are two fun and interesting lore facts about her: she was tutored by a literal angel who assumed a living form and she is older than the literal sun and moon of Middle-Earth.

I pray you do watch the Extended for the last two (particularly the 3rd), because unlike the first film they did cut some key character moments that were beautifully preformed and were great payoffs/ conclusions to specific arcs. You need to see the extended versions. You will have noticed there is no filler dialog in these movies, the smallest conversations are important. The sequences cut out to shorten it for the theater release contain a lot of detail that will explain something coming up or something that just happened. If you're detail oriented, you'll appreciate not having to ask yourself "How" or "Why". Example: Galadriel gave everyone elf magic items before they left down the river, you only got to see the water she gave to Frodo. She gave Sam rope, gave them all a cape of concealment. You'll see them all wearing the capes in the next movies and notice how they use these items.

It isn't as important for FOTR, but both of the others have scenes important to the plot that were omitted from the Theatrical versions. A reviewer needs a butt of steel, so grit your teeth and go for it. You won't regret doing so!
Great job! You guys are fun to watch. You're very perceptive and analytical and catch what a lot of reactors don't. One thing--you HAVE to watch the extended versions of Two Towers and Return of the King. TRUST US ON THIS. You can "kind of" get away with the theatrical release of Fellowship, but the last two movies really have so much extra content in them that you really hamstring yourself by not watching the extended versions.
This is where Sousou no Frieren took inspiration from, like most Fantasy stories today. Also for The last two you NEED to do the Extended edition, you're gonna love it more!

Even though extended version is longer and I understend the concerns of watching and editing 4.5 hours movie I would still argue that these movies flow better with the extended versions. They give more context to the story, more character development, some comedic releafs and breaks of tension. It objectively feels better to watch, even if it's hard to convince yourself to start watching such long movies.
The next 2 are Extended Additions must as it adds a lot of context to the movies and answers many of the questions that remained unanswered for those who haven’t read the books.
I’m glad this is how I found this channel. I sincerely hope you can get to see the other films. I have a feeling you’ll enjoy them. I would also like to add that I for one am happy you are watching them at all. There will likely be folks that insist you watch the extended versions; I hope those won’t be discouraging. The films are great either theatrical or not; I for one am happy you seem to enjoy them at all. Keep up the good work no matter what you do! It may be unwarranted, but this world is so rich it’s hard for me not to add something. Specifically on Galadriel, one of my favorite characters. I’ll spoil it for you both: she’s okay. You can trust her. Her reaction to Frodo giving her the ring was the same as Gandalf’s, only different. Gandalf told Frodo what would happen if he had the ring, while Galadriel showed him what would happen. It was scary, but for good reason. Galadriel had always been driven by her want for power as her backstory goes VERY far back. She was denied her ability to sail west with her people because of what she and her kin had done in the past. When she says “I pass the test” it can be seen a few ways. She passes the temptation of the ring, but she also passes in proving that she could put aside her pride and ambition to meet her own goals. I’m sure someone will be able to articulate this better than I just did. TLDR: Galadriel is good. Don’t worry about her. She was showing Frodo what would happen if she had the ring.
Great reaction. I could tell that you two were really immersed in the movie and paid attention. Cara saying she's glad she didn't watch it when she was a kid because she would have been traumatized is funny. I was 11yo when my mom just randomly asked if I wanna watch movie in theatre and of course I said yes and I didn't even know that what we were going to watch is this movie. Long story short, I was scared shitless, and for days I was having nightmares of orcs invading my city. Later on, this became my favorite movies of all time. I hope you watch the extended editions for the next movies. They add a lot of epicness to the series
That's interesting to hear, because for me, I could never call LOTR "dark" or particularly scary. Yes there are few jumpscares and tense scenes but overall it's very hopeful and uplifting story for me. So in my eyes it's like one of the "brightest" stories out there. Although I was a weird kid who loved Terminator, Alien and Predator movies since I was like 7, so it's interesting to see other people's perspective

But as I said, I'm the weird one who loved scary creatures designs since I was a child. Even in my perspective as an adult who do not get scared of the creatures in this movie anymore, objectively, the Fellowship of the Ring by itself is not a bright, hopeful, and uplifting movie. At its end, Gandalf and Boromir died, the Fellowship broke off. Merry and Pippin were taken, and Sam and Frodo is just starting their journey just the two of them towards Mordor.
@@iconoclast6555 Well, yeah, there are sad moments but our heroes are hopeful and continue to fight against all evil and as a viewer I always was hopeful that they will reach their goals no matter what. Even in this dark and sad ending, Sam and Frodo's friendship shines brighter than the Eye of Sauron. Anecdotal Trio's determination to save hobbits is stronger than any metal Saruman can craft. Elves are litteral angels of this world and their existence alone gives hope in brighter future. And Gendalf... Let's just say, he took out an actual devil with him and if that isn't worth his sacrifice, I don't know what is. Comparing all this to Harry Potter, as Cara did, I would say The Fellowship might be considered "darker" than only first HP movie. From second one onwards they are around same level of "darkness". The scale of conflict is obviously much bigger than in HP, but I don't think in directly correlate with a tone of a movie.
Now that's what I call instantly deeply engaged! Might want to consider rewatching this Extended version off camera before TT and reserved to post later- she would ADORE the added scenes and vibe, and you would get lots of great writing and events.
I watched the original theatrical versions of these movies and the extended versions. The extended are better and should be how people experience these movies, even for the first time. They help to clarify some important things that were kind of vague in the theatrical cuts, but they're just more fun too.
I love the extended versions very much. However, I do believe that when you are introduced to this story, you do it with the theatrical version first. Let that set in with all of it's glory. Then go back and watch the extended versions to get that feeling all over again because you have new scenes to watch.

I was living in New Zealand when they were making these films. I often bumped into the cast and crew whilst out working. These films have a special place in my heart. Enjoy the other movies 👍
All that contrast that you guys point out is what Tolkien wanted to reflect with the concept of Industrialization and the environment, like man and progress to obtain power (from the perspective of Suaron's ambition and what Saruman does in Isengard) It is seen that it destroys the natural environment. Peter Jackson reflected this very well in how it is presented in the trilogy of books and in Tolkien's letters. There are three books so there are three films. Galadriel said "Instead of a Dark Lord you would have a Queen!" She was demonstrating what would happen if she took the ring. I'm glad a couple more folks have seen Lord of the Rings. It's a wonderful story and is the cornerstone of the Fantasy genre. These movies have also stood the test of time. There are few movie franchises that have even approached the quality, scale, and storytelling in these three films. It's one of the best trilogies ever made. If and when you guys finish this be it reacted to on this channel or not I will always advise a yearly re-watch of the Extended Editions. It's always worth it. As for some notes I took for the reaction, The Elves indeed barely notices the passing of time. Before things went very awry the original plan for them was that they were never supposed to linger in Middle Earth as they have. They were originally meant to travel West to the shores of the gods on a magical continent in the West. It's why you'll keep hearing about that in these three films. If you ever read into the lore of Middle Earth you'll find a breadth and depth of detail that explains nearly everything you see in Lord of the Rings and then some. in the Simarillion novel which explains the beginning of the development of the races of middle earth literally hundreds of years pass between the chapters from war to war and historical event to historical event since a majority of the characters in the novel are elves. Arwen definitely didn't have confidence facing the Nine Ringwraiths either and the spell you see was actually a magical trap fashioned by Elrond and customized by Gandalf. It's meant to keep unwanted people and things out of the Elvish lands of Rivendell and literally washes them away. Not to mention, Ringwraiths don't like water because it's both a conveyance for magic in their world, a substance their undead bodies doesn't like representing life and nature, and any flowing water is the realm of the sea god, Ulmo. The Ring Wraiths are a perversion of life itself and water represents everything they are not. Given you didn't watch the Extended cut there's a reason no one knows the whispering of the ring. It's in the perverse language of Mordor. It's a magical language Sauron created for only his army to use. However, to the free people of Middle Earth especially the magical and the people of old who remember the wars and evil it allowed and created it is not just difficult to listen to but sounds like evil in your head. Though, for that matter a lot of languages in Middle Earth have a distinct impression to them but the Black Speech of Mordor and song like speech of the Elves are languages that almost have a magical quality to them. A part that never made it into the movies at all is when Sam and Frodo first leave the Shire that spend one night camping with a group of Elves that are traveling West to leave Middle Earth. Frodo knows a good degree of Elvish to communicate with them and talks far into the night with them in their language and Sam swears as he's nodding off to bed the longer they talk he can almost see what they're saying as it paints a literal magical vision of communicated speech in front of him which kind of can be traced to the fact Tolkien loved languages, prose, poems, words, speech, and communication and it shows in his work. He literally helped write the Oxford Dictionary in 1928. The Balrog you see in the Mines of Moria is actually a demon of the old world. It's a former Angel that volunteered to be on the side of evil in a great conflict that's written in the Silmarillion novel. Gandalf is also an Angel alongside his fellow Wizards that were made to take the form of old mortal men and sent to Middle Earth following the 1st age to help protect and guide the fledgling races of the developing world. Also, Galadriel isn't bad. She's just an old jaded soul. She did follow the plan at the beginning of time and left Middle Earth to join the gods in their heaven on Earth with the rest of her tribe but, she was used like many of the Elves of her tribe and they unfortunately turned against the gods and left Heaven only to come back to Middle Earth and find they had been deceived. The evil god during the 1st age had manipulated her people in Heaven through their greatest artisan who convinced most of his people to turn against their fellow elves and the gods and flee Heaven while nearly slaying another tribe of sea fairing elves and stole their ships. She and her tribe fought an endless war against the evil god during the 1st age of Middle Earth and were nearly wiped out. They barely survived the events of the 1st age and she was lucky enough to survive alongside her people that now only number in the tens of thousands when once they were a tribe of hundreds of thousands in heaven. She technically passes a test keeping herself from taking the ring and knows if they can defeat this last great threat to the world then she may just be able to pass into the West and return to Heaven after all. But, anyways, enough of my my blather. I hope you guys continue reacting given each movie is better than the last and definitely worth reacting to or at the very least watching on your own time.
I know the extended editions are daunting but they give so much backstory you’ll be glad you watched them if you decide to. It’s a must for the next two if I’m being honest. Plus you can section the videos off in parts if you need!
The song being sung during the Balrog scenes is not jibberish but Neo-Khazdul which is a modernized revision of the few words and names Tolkien originally translated from Khazdul the secret language of dwarves. Part of what we hear is Fire in the deep! Urus ni buzra! Flames lick our skin! Arrâs talbabi fillumâ! Fear rips our heart! Ugrûd tashniki kurdumâ! No! No! No! Lu! Lu! Lu! The demon comes! Urkhas tanakhi! Also an important distinction, the movie primarily has Gandalf saying "you shall not pass" to the Balrog implying he will prevent the Balrog from crossing the bridge. In the book however Gandalf says "You CAN not pass" which is on a deeper level implying the Balrog had not the authority to cross the bridge because Gandalf had forbidden it and Gandalf's authority came from Eru'Illuvitar (God).
What’s great is the Māori men that actually played as the orcs also put their own chant vocal style into what became this track. They even blessed many of the actors and team members and did ceremonial rites. Even bonded with Viggo Mortensen/Aragorn deeply as shown on the passion project documentary !
Prez: "...not the extended version, 'cause that's absolutely mad..." Gandalf: "FOOL of a Prez! Throw yourself in next time and rid us of your stupidity!" More seriously... 🙂 There are vast numbers of potential new subs/likes out there, being LotR fans/nutcases. In recent months, several new youtubers have experienced the sudden spike in engagement from many new viewers as a result of reacting to LotR. Extra effort involved in editing for the extended editions is seriously appreciated. I've watched *many* LotR reaction videos, who start off with the theatrical edition of FotR, but then quickly realize their mistake and upgrade to the extended versions for TTT and RotK. I've never heard any of them begrudging the extra time and effort -- quite the opposite. Including more of the film, and more of your reactions, is not a waste for these monumental epics. It's so obvious that Cara got deeply absorbed in FotR that I confidently predict she'll LOVE the extended versions and end up awash in a sea of her own tears by the end of the 3rd film. Bring plenty of tissues. (Seriously -- you'd be astonished at the volume of tissues consumed by many female reactors by the end of RotK.) You also need to include more of the important dialog scenes. E.g., you skipped the bit where Gandalf gave Frodo some very sage advice in Moria, which ultimately has a deep influence on his subsequent choices after Gandalf's fall. (*Edit:* I see that there's already an overwhelming number of commenters scolding you for not doing the extended versions. Is the message received?)
You really need to watch all three movies, and watch the Extended Editions. “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy is universally considered a masterpiece, and why deprive yourself of more masterpiece? As you probably already know, the extended editions don’t just add a few seconds here and there. You learn so much about the characters, and if you don’t watch them, you may find yourself occasionally wondering why certain things happen the way they do. They’re a worthwhile investment.
Didn't expect to wake up to this, but this is a pleasant surprise indeed. Not watching the extended version for Fellowship is fine, but definitely recommend it for Two Towers and Return of the King. Sauron pours most of his power, his malice, and his essence into his One Ring. As a consequence, it takes much longer than usual for him to regenerate a physical form without it. The Ring's purpose is absolute control, especially over those who bear the other Rings of Power, much like the Nine Men who were corrupted into becoming the Ringwraiths, the greatest of Sauron's slaves. He did try corrupting the Dwarves with the Seven, but they proved too hardy to bend to his will. The Three Elven Rings were made after the other 16 and without Sauron's involvement, so he doesn't have as much influence over them, making these Rings the most powerful outside of the One. We're told in the books that the Elven Rings are the ones Sauron wants the most. The owners of the Three Elven Rings are Galadriel, Elrond and Gandalf. As a bit of a fun fact, Bilbo and Frodo share the same birthday. When Bilbo turns 111, Frodo comes of age at 33. The movie never specifies this, but by the time Frodo leaves the Shire, he is 50 years old. The fact that he doesn't look much different is evidence that the Ring has already started delaying his age. Sam is 38, Merry is 36, and Pippin is 28. This explains a lot of the dumb shit Gandalf keeps getting mad at Pippin for.
Thank you for commenting on Pippin's age!! So many people don't realise how much younger he is than the others and it really does explain so much about who he is. The whole journey really is his "coming of age" because he is around the equivalent to a 18-20 year old in human ages when they set off. In the book, Elrond even pushes back on Pippin specifically going on the journey because of his age! I love Pippin so much, if there's one thing I wish the movies had made more evident, it would be this (especially because Billy Boyd is the oldest of the 4 hobbit actors so it's not that clear that Pippin is Like That because he's kind of just a kid)
@@annafalcao9850 Indeed. It makes you appreciate Galadriel telling him (in the extended edition), "Do not fear, young Peregrin Took. You will find your courage," foreshadowing the growth Pippin goes through in this journey.
I don't know if someone covered this already but since you mentioned the horse Arwen was riding being a beauty... the stunt rider for Arwen fell in love with that horse, so Viggo (plays Aragorn) bought it for her.

Don’t get frightened by the length of the movies. The end credits take up the majority of extra time. And like so many others have stated, the extended cut is skippable for Fellowship but close to mandatory for Towers & Refurn.

Hey, I subbed so I don't miss the rest of the Trilogy. But I'll add my voice to the others, the EXTENDED versions is the way to go. and don't worry about the time, it will fly by. It happens every time someone is concerned about them being so long... you won't feel it! This was a great reaction. I really hope you guys continue on this journey. It is truly worth it. I had the honor of watching these films as they were released. THESE movies, on the big screen are 10x even more impactful. After you guys finish this trilogy, which I'm sure you will, maybe watch The Hobbit trilogy. It's the story of Bilbo and his adventures, 60 years before The Lord of The Rings tale. It was written as a childrens book, so the tone is a little "llighter" than Lord of the Rings. Nothing too scary, it's a little silly at times, but that's fine, You see some familiar faces and get a LOT of backstory to LOTR. it's pretty cool. Anyway, can't wait for The Two Towers, Extended Edition.

Boromir is trashed by a lot of people for succumbing to the Ring, but they usually ignore how he normally behaves other than in the moments when the Ring is actively tempting him. He's a good and noble man, and he's always portrayed as being protective of the hobbits. He's the one who teaches them swordplay and has no problem playing with them, he's the one who urges the Fellowship to turn back from the snowstorm in the mountain pass and the reason he gives is that he thinks the hobbits won't survive it even if he thinks him and the rest of the bigger folk will, and he not only goes out trying to protect Merry and Pippin from the orcs but the first thing he tells Aragorn when the battle is over and they're able to talk before he dies is that the orcs took both of them and asks about Frodo before apologizing for failing them all. Dude was a real one.
Thank you! The only reason he even gave into the temptation of the ring was - and this is just a theory - out of desperation. His primary objective up to that point wasn't the quest to destroy the Ring, but protecting Gondor and he felt he needed the Ring to do it. Since the party was supposed to break at the Lorien (Aragorn and Boromir heading off to Gondor and Sam, Frodo, and Gandalf going to Mordor; Gimli and Legolas supposedly choosing which way they want to go) - and again, just a theory - got desperate in his desire to protect his home.
Galadriel is really good at poking and prodding at people. She probably brought his desires closer to the surface than he was comfortable with when she looked into the hearts/desires of each one of them.
@@Tavora_Tiefling Yes, after Gandalf's death he tells Aragorn in Lothlorien that he's worried because the people of Gondor are losing faith and his father's rule is failing even if he's trying to do the right thing. And both back during the council of Elrond and when he tried to take the Ring from Frodo he specifically mentions that his intention is to use the Ring to fight Sauron and protect the people of Gondor and by extension the rest of the peoples of Middle Earth. So even when the Ring was attempting to corrupt his mind he was still justifying it by using arguments that would count as selfless. It kind of reflects what Gandalf told Frodo back at Bag End when he offered him the Ring and he refused it by saying that he would use it out of a desire to do good even if he ended up doing harm because, well, it's an evil sentient artifact that's not meant to do good even by accident or as a means to an evil end.
I will never stand for Boromir slander, so thank you for this comment. The man was under immense pressure from his father and the fate of his city, and the presence of the ring certainly amplified that. People tend to think his weakness towards the ring is especially HIM, but it isn't. He is simply human. Beyond the way the ring draws him in, Boromir was an honorable and good man.
What isn't really apparent is that Borimir is starting from state of things as they are in the last movie. He wasn't relaxing in the shire, he was already fighting Mordor. For him shit is already bleak and they are loosing.

During Boromi's death scene, you can hear a choir in the soundtrack. The choir isn't singing random vowels, they're actually singing in Elvish. The english translation of the lyrics? It's a line from the books: "I do not love the sword for its sharpness, nor the arrow for its swiftness, nor the warrior for his glory. I love only what they defend," For bonus hurt points- In the books, those lines were said by his little brother Faramir.

This is the manliest film in which the male leads all hold each other and openly weep. Aragorn is; respectful, kind, loving and ok with crying openly and still is as manly as they come
To me, he's the epitomy of a "proper" man. He embodies masculinity in all its strengths and beauties. He respects, helps, saves, cares, cries, defends, loves, does what has to be done despite the hardship, isn't egotistic, is humble yet driven.

The look that gandalf has when he hears Frodo say, "I will take it!" at the council is amazing. It was sadness and regret mixed with realization that he knew it was probably the only way.
That sweep of emotions across his face in under a second is absolute priceless acting. Ian McKellan has so many of those moments in these movies. That man can act! Everyone in this can act the hell out of anything they are in... but man... McKellan and Bernard Hill... a handful of others just stand on top of this already ridiculously overly talented cast.
Extended edition is a must for the next 2 movies. They give a lot of backstory and other nice scenes which really seem like nothing but make sense. Seeing the scenes which were left out of the theatrical is crazy to know they weren't added.
... And edit them into multiple videos next time, that's how you edit this.

I’m as big a fan of LOTR as anyone but I genuinely think the theatrical version is a better movie experience. Let them enjoy it in it’s most digestible form and then let them come back to the nearly infinite buffet that this story offers
@@baddayoverdosed I cannot agree. I see some people say that, and I just don't understand it. If you love something, why wouldn't you want a version of that thing that has MORE of the thing you love? The extended editions flesh out the story and only make the viewing experience richer. The extended editions are just as "digestible" as the theatrical cuts.

I love your assessment about Boromir. He is such a tragic figure. He was always a hero, and he always fought for the people who couldn't fight for themselves. Even when dying, the first thing he said to Aragorn was that the Hobbits were taken. He is a character that has grown in me over the years.

At 1:00:18, the Argonath are two colossal statues of Isildur and his brother Anarion, who jointly ruled Gondor as its first kings. The statues were erected to mark the northern boundary of Gondor at its greatest extent, and are at this point about 2,000 years old. I love the details of these statues. If you look behind the figures, you can see the quarry marks where the stones for the statues were cut.

I love the fact that In the Making of the Lord of the Rings documentary, they show the two artists, Alan Lee and John Howe climbing around on the actual rocks that the Argonath scenery are placed on, working out the concept drawings. Wonderful stuff!
In the extended version Aragorn sings the Lay of Luthien to the Hobbits in the wilderness. Frodo asks, who was she and Aragorn says "She died.." Luthien was an elf princess who rescued aman, Beren, from an evil dungeon. The fell in love and she gave up her immortality to be with him. On the gravestone of JRRR Tolkien and his wife Edith are the names Luthien and Beren.

And both Aragorn and Arwen are descended from Beren and Luthien. In fact, Luthien's choice to become mortal is the main reason Arwen is allowed to do the same.

When you’re done the trilogy try doing reaction videos just like Moviejoob did now with the lore recently as well as OmarioRPG. I recommend videos by GirlNextGondor and The Red Book, and Tolkien Untangled and especially Men Of The West. Many other cool ones I’ll recommend in the comments section of those reaction videos you do from Tolkiens Legendarium lore videos. They are super engaging. You’ll be in love. Nothing would have existed if Tolkiens works never hit the light of day as they were meant to stay private and sometimes be shared with his children and so on. No Game Of Thrones. No Skyrim. No ElderScrolls, No World Of Warcraft, no Dungeons&Dragons. None of it. Not even Star Wars. Not even Harry Potter! They took inspiration from his works which were souly to give back a forgotten history of the Anglo Saxons that had their culture & history destroyed as the larger empires were riding around them. His works reflect the Elder Edda(Norse) The Kalevala(Finnish) and the Welsh people from Wales as well as Irelands cultures of the Tuatha De Danaan as well! His languages are fully fleshed out too resembling Finnish & Welsh

By the way Elrond is around 6870-8000 years old & nearly a full Elf year (as they age very very differently to Men) is close to 144 man years(solar years for them). but if you want a more true age you must realize that he may be 8000 but in human years after the sun and moon were created from the flower from of the two trees of Valinor as well as one fruit from the other of the two trees; they experience the TIME and the way men experience it but their clock is different! They live as long as the world/Arda/Ëa does. Essentially. Which is why they are so in synch with the world around them and the nature responds to them ! (Arda) and speaking of age, Legolas is also 3000+years old by the time he becomes a member of The Fellowship Of The Ring! If you look back on the original trilogy movies: The fellowship had a 3000year old Elven PRINCE in their party. And a clandestine angelic being who was Gandalf originally known Olòrin to those such as Galadriel who knew him when she lived in Valinor, Elrond also knew would be one of the only others who’d know this save Círdan The Shipwright(Oldest Elf in the world but even he was a few generations down from the original elvish peoples to awake to the stars) & kin to Thingol who also is a semi distant cousin to Legolas as Legolas’ grandfather was the close cousin to Thingol(same with Galadriel’s Husband Celeborn through his father, their capital within Lothlòrien was named after his father(Caras Galadhon) Galadhon being the name indicating that which belongs to the father. And a 87 year old Númenorean man named Aragorn!, a 335 year old Dwarven Prince named Gimli. Galadriel's Phial (gift to Frodo) is something really special. light & dark have a spiritual dimension in Tolkien. way back before the First Age Valinor was lit by two very special Trees that waxed & waned in opposition to each other. a master craftsman Elf named Fëanor fashioned three gems that captured their light, the Silmarils. (And it’s same power and light was drawn into it from the very firmament where it now stands amongst the stars as Eärendil himself (Elrond’s father stands watch over The Doors Of Night where Melkor still is held until fate holds him no longer.)
Everyone who saw them was captivated by them, even the Melkor(Morgoth); the first Dark Lord. Mirror is lit by light captured from the star Eärendil & her Phial has water from the fount. I've left out about 90% of the story but it's quite important & central to the story of Middle Earth. for her to give the Phial to Frodo is quite extraordinary. its light does burn & blind Shelob (that's the spider's name) but doesn't kill her outright. oh also, before he was put in the sky to guard the last Silmaril Earendil had two children, Elrond & his brother Elros the first King of Numenor. Tolkien's lore is deep & vast & the Silmarils are at the center of it.
The Star of Eärendil is the light that shines in the horizon both in the morning and the evening. It consists in a boat raised by the Valar and led by Eärendil, who carries a shining Silmaril while watching the Doors of Night. The Door of Night was a portal in the distant Uttermost West that leads to heaven, and/or the Void. Eärendil's ship Vingilot was taken by the Valar from the rim of the world, passed through the Door and was lifted into the "oceans of heaven". The title of half elven (Peredhel) was due to the combined history of Beren&Lúthien, his mother Elwing was the granddaughter of Lùthien! Eärendil was the husband of Elwing. The true half elf; son of the best elvish women ever who rescued hundreds from the highest of elvish kingdoms(Gondolin); her name is Idril & one of the best most powerful men around named Tuor. Who later on when they went to Valinor together through their own way lead to him choosing to be counted as One Of The Eldar for Idril. Eärendil did the same for Elwing. ❤

Peter Jackson & Co. have speeded up the action of the book dramatically to make an exciting movie; in the book, it took Gandalf 17 years to find out the truth.
It has just been anounced by Warner Bros that Peter Jackson will produce a film directed by Andy Serkis called the Hunt for Gollum, where the whole story about how he got the Ring and how Gandalf found out it was a Great Ring is told in detail. It is still in the pre-production phase, so don''t expect it before 2026.

Boromir’s death is the best death scene in all of cinema, I think. It’s absolutely pitch perfect.
It is one scene that the movie changed from the book for the better.
At 6:20, Hobbits live a bit longer than Men. They "come of age" at 33, and Tolkien says that they reach 100 as often as not. When Gandalf first greets Bilbo, he gives him a hard look, not because Bilbo is turning 111, but because he hasn't aged, and he looks no older than he did when he first found the Ring, at age 50.
So in human terms it would be kinda like a 80-year-old looking like a 40-year-old.

Here's my interpretation after seeing this movie over a hundred times: When Galadriel said "I passed the test", she meant she fully experienced having the ring and its power and knowing what she would do with that power and then she turned it down. This means that she chose good over power. Maybe this draw to power was distracting her and she felt the need to conquer it before leaving.
Partly yes, she says she passed the test amd will diminish and go into the West and remain Galadriel
Meaning she not only freed herself from the power of the Ring but also freed herself of the desire for power itself.
Her background, which is to long and complicated to go into here, is that she was born in the Valinor or the Undying lands. She was on if the post powerful Elven women then and by the time of the LotR the most powerful elf in Middle Earth. She left Valinor because she wanted to see Middle Earth as well as find and establish a kingdom or her own to rule in Middle Earth
To leave Valinor, which was forbidden, she was partly involved in the Kin Slaying although she took no part in the killing of other elves.
After the Kinslaying and leaving Valinor, the elves that left were banned from ever returning to the Undying Lands as punishment, including Galadriel.
The Ban was lifted after the elves hepled the Valor defeat Morgoth in the War of Wrath. Many returned to Valinor, but Galadriel remained in Middle Earth becuase she wanted to rule her own kingdom, which she eventually did.
So when she freed herself of the power of the Ring she also freed herself of her desire to hold power in general and knew it was time for her to return to the Undying Lands after Sauron would be defeated

Deeper story than that. Galadriel is actually really ancient. But in her youth she was haughty and desired a kingdom of her own. She'd crossed some of the wrong people and was banished from returning to The Undying Lands, the only elf to suffer that fate. When she declined the ring and passed the test, her banishment was lifted.

Also not her own actions caused the banishment but rather the brother mass murder that her father ordered on the hunt for the Silmaril. "Some of the wrong people" yeah well how about basically the lesser gods (or higher angels depending on how you want to see it), but again they could have left if they wanted to but what angered the Valar was that they murdered their own kin while leaving. All Noldor who left with Feanor and his sons were banished which included Galadriel.
She had immense power now beyond Fëanor and her full uncle Fingolfin, surpassed Turgon and Fingon, surpassed all of them after living literally near to her 3rd cycle. 17,000 plus years. Older than the sun and moon. Sauron feared her
galadriel was admitting to frodo and (and mostly to herself) what will happen if she ever got the one ring, it's a recognition that the one ring will change her to the ruin of all despite her good intentions bc the one ring is that powerful and evil
and yes, it was a rejection of the ring before her
I love her comments about “fighting the long defeat.” How rejecting the Ring still isn’t a victory, in the classic heroic sense; how even destroying the Ring, and sending Sauron into nothingness forevermore, still means a diminishing for the Elves anyways. It is a lesson in doing the right thing, persistently, even if you have nothing to gain.
I'm sure many will tell you to watch the extended versions for the next two. They will be right. This wonderful story has only begun.

By the way, I feel... obliged to mentioned that Boromir is my favourite character of the whole trilogy.
As it is said few times throughout the movie, "men are weak." As through the lore, the men were the only ones who actually fell under the influence of the One Ring. (Elves discovered the enemy plot with the rings, while the faith of the dwarven rings is more or less unknown. (though, it is mentioned that the dwarfs were too difficult to control because of their stubborness).
Isildur got immediately corrupted by the rings and so was Boromir.
It is worth mentioning here that the ring works through influecing thoughts of its wearer and people around, by promising them fullfiling their wildest dreams and desires. Boromir is the heir of the current steward of the 'last' kingdom of men - Gondor - but he knows himselves, and reminded by Galadriel, that his father's rules is failing and Gondor is weak, constantly under attack from Mordor. Boromir's biggest desire is to see the glory of the Gondor restored, for his people to be safe, so the rings tries to convince him that he can help him with that.
But...
As weak and phrone to corruption human's hearths are, they are also capable of heroic deads, loyalty and courage of doing what is right.
Boromir eventually sees through the lies of the ring and rushes to save Marry and Pippin. He dies with his sword in his hands, with his mind cleared of the ring's influece, with three arrows ripped through his chest, with 10+ uruk hais dead by his feet. Not as Isildur, who fell for the ring, and died with three arrows in the BACK after the ring betrayed him.

guys, if you liked this one you really need to watch the extended editions going forward. I know it seems like a monumental task but they add SO much more depth and context, they are well worth the time. there's scenes that re-contextualize characters and give payoffs to characters that don't happen in the theatrical. If you liked the first one you owe it to yourselves to watch the extended versions.

shame you are not watching the EE. the theatrical cuts were made purely to make the movie work in theather, but those missing scenes are still absolute A-tier material. it's how the movies are supposed to be watched.
and yes, 3-4 hours per movie is long, but with a combined 11 hours, it's what - a season and half of a regular TV show? it's really not that much if you look at it from the right perspective, and when I rewatch them, I always do it half a movie at a time.

The end credits music for all 3 movies is extremely fitting and a musical capstone that profoundly captures the mood of each film. Even the end credits music is perfect, attended to with thought and care - that’s how great every facet of these movies are.
You should really watch the extended editions, they make the movies even better! Or at least look up the scenes online for the Fellowship.

I know I wasn't able to make it through the entire movie (any of the three) at the theater without a bathroom break. On the other hand, my reaction coming out of The Fellowship of the Ring when I saw it in the theater was that they really should have made it into two movies with just a little bit of additional material to make each movie about 2 hours long. And the extra material I was envisioning, based on my knowledge of the books, was pretty similar to what was added for the extended editions. Given that the extended editions were not meant to be watched in the theater, so stopping whenever necessary to take a bathroom break (or whatever else you need to do) isn't a problem, I prefer them to the theatrical versions for home viewing. But I wouldn't want to go to a theater to watch one of the extended versions unless they put in a long intermission somewhere near the middle.
Is the pacing somewhat harmed by the additional material in the extended releases? Maybe, in some cases. But I don't think it's significant, and some of the added scenes are almost required to really understand what is going on in some of the other scenes. In general, I think a lot was done in the name of pacing that really hurt the coherence of the story. And that wasn't always due to things that were left out - sometimes it was stuff that Peter Jackson et al added in explicitly for the purpose of adding tension where it might otherwise be missing but which didn't really make sense within the story.
By the way, can we just take a minute to salute the head of New Line Cinema who, when Miramax was trying to force Peter Jackson to turn his two movie project into a single movie, not only rescued the production but insisted on expanding it to three movies? From what I've heard about the two movie version I'm not sure it would have been very successful with Tolkien fans. Even with three very long (perhaps too long for the theater?) movies there was a lot that was merely hinted at. I've watched enough first time reactions to see how often that results in significant confusion over some parts of the story for those who haven't read the books. (And occasionally even for those of us who have, given that the movies don't always follow the books perfectly.) While I still wish it had been made into six 2 hour movies instead of three 3 hour movies, I understand that it was really a miracle that Peter Jackson was able to get financing for three movies. The result isn't the best that I can imagine, but it's better than I have any right to expect to actually see. And with the extended editions, I got something close to the 6 movies I wanted.

So much of these films were filmed in real locations and locations made for the film, they made the shire and let it age for a year before filming on it is just 1 example, it was shot in the director Peter Jackson’s home country of New Zealand. Saw these movies in theaters as a young teen, it was so epic, still is everytime I watch it. Glad we have a new fan

Love you actually delivered on your promise! One little thing I wanted to clarify regarding Gandalf and Saruman tho: Saruman is in fact not Gandalf's master, but more so a colleague of his. They are both Wizards and part of the same "order" (there is a lot more backstory to this, but I do not want to get into ALL the lore of Middle-eart), with Saruman being their quasi leader. Other than that tho, they are pretty equal in standing.

Welcome to the cinematic masterpiece known as The Lord of the Rings, noting will ever come close to it. Please reconsider watching the extended versions for the last two movies, they add a lot more context to things.
25:41 The Palantir (Seeing Stone) conversations with Sauron were what sealed Saruman's betrayal. The thing with him in the books is that while a very wise and intelligent wizard, he grew very very arrogant because of it and began thinking of himself as 'the only one good enough to lead the fight against evil' and along the years he saw his allies beneath him and grew frustrated with them. This in turn lead to the idea in his mind that HE must be the one in charge and lead everyone, 'cuz he knows better'. Once he started using the Palantir, he got in a duel of willpower with Sauron (which also has one in his tower of Barad-Dur). The thing with these Palantiri is that you have to will them to show you what you want and in a contest of wills against Sauron, Saruman was easily outmatched and thus cornered into allying with him (note how drained and weary he is as the orc workers come to him to receive their orders).
54:25 Very VERY well noticed. A lot of reactors miss the arrows pelting the Fellowship (granted, they are very easy to miss) and are frustrated with the lads not helping Gandalf out.
58:35 Correct, Galadriel basically is in a sort of exile from the Western Lands (a sort of Heaven on Earth realm if you will) due to some actions in her past (and that's one BIG rabbit hole to go down). Her rejection of the One Ring is in a sense a final penance served and will thus be granted to return to the West.
Btw, on Galadriel, here are two fun and interesting lore facts about her: she was tutored by a literal angel who assumed a living form and she is older than the literal sun and moon of Middle-Earth.

You need to see the extended versions. You will have noticed there is no filler dialog in these movies, the smallest conversations are important. The sequences cut out to shorten it for the theater release contain a lot of detail that will explain something coming up or something that just happened. If you're detail oriented, you'll appreciate not having to ask yourself "How" or "Why". Example: Galadriel gave everyone elf magic items before they left down the river, you only got to see the water she gave to Frodo. She gave Sam rope, gave them all a cape of concealment. You'll see them all wearing the capes in the next movies and notice how they use these items.

Enjoyed watching the movie with you! Let me add one more vote for watching the Extended versions of the other two movies. It isn't as important for FOTR, but both of the others have scenes important to the plot that were omitted from the Theatrical versions. A reviewer needs a butt of steel, so grit your teeth and go for it. You won't regret doing so!
Great job! You guys are fun to watch. You're very perceptive and analytical and catch what a lot of reactors don't. One thing--you HAVE to watch the extended versions of Two Towers and Return of the King. TRUST US ON THIS. You can "kind of" get away with the theatrical release of Fellowship, but the last two movies really have so much extra content in them that you really hamstring yourself by not watching the extended versions.

Even though extended version is longer and I understend the concerns of watching and editing 4.5 hours movie I would still argue that these movies flow better with the extended versions. They give more context to the story, more character development, some comedic releafs and breaks of tension. It objectively feels better to watch, even if it's hard to convince yourself to start watching such long movies.
The next 2 are Extended Additions must as it adds a lot of context to the movies and answers many of the questions that remained unanswered for those who haven’t read the books.

Also, if you do read this you’ll likely see this *along with many other* bits of trivia about the movies and or lore of the world. It may be unwarranted, but this world is so rich it’s hard for me not to add something. Specifically on Galadriel, one of my favorite characters. I’ll spoil it for you both: she’s okay. You can trust her. Her reaction to Frodo giving her the ring was the same as Gandalf’s, only different. Gandalf told Frodo what would happen if he had the ring, while Galadriel showed him what would happen. It was scary, but for good reason. Galadriel had always been driven by her want for power as her backstory goes VERY far back. She was denied her ability to sail west with her people because of what she and her kin had done in the past. When she says “I pass the test” it can be seen a few ways. She passes the temptation of the ring, but she also passes in proving that she could put aside her pride and ambition to meet her own goals. I’m sure someone will be able to articulate this better than I just did.
TLDR: Galadriel is good. Don’t worry about her. She was showing Frodo what would happen if she had the ring.
Great reaction. I could tell that you two were really immersed in the movie and paid attention. Cara saying she's glad she didn't watch it when she was a kid because she would have been traumatized is funny. I was 11yo when my mom just randomly asked if I wanna watch movie in theatre and of course I said yes and I didn't even know that what we were going to watch is this movie. Long story short, I was scared shitless, and for days I was having nightmares of orcs invading my city.
Later on, this became my favorite movies of all time. I hope you watch the extended editions for the next movies. They add a lot of epicness to the series
That's interesting to hear, because for me, I could never call LOTR "dark" or particularly scary. Yes there are few jumpscares and tense scenes but overall it's very hopeful and uplifting story for me. So in my eyes it's like one of the "brightest" stories out there.
Although I was a weird kid who loved Terminator, Alien and Predator movies since I was like 7, so it's interesting to see other people's perspective

At its end, Gandalf and Boromir died, the Fellowship broke off. Merry and Pippin were taken, and Sam and Frodo is just starting their journey just the two of them towards Mordor.

Even in this dark and sad ending, Sam and Frodo's friendship shines brighter than the Eye of Sauron. Anecdotal Trio's determination to save hobbits is stronger than any metal Saruman can craft. Elves are litteral angels of this world and their existence alone gives hope in brighter future. And Gendalf... Let's just say, he took out an actual devil with him and if that isn't worth his sacrifice, I don't know what is.
Comparing all this to Harry Potter, as Cara did, I would say The Fellowship might be considered "darker" than only first HP movie. From second one onwards they are around same level of "darkness". The scale of conflict is obviously much bigger than in HP, but I don't think in directly correlate with a tone of a movie.
Now that's what I call instantly deeply engaged!
Might want to consider rewatching this Extended version off camera before TT and reserved to post later- she would ADORE the added scenes and vibe, and you would get lots of great writing and events.

I watched the original theatrical versions of these movies and the extended versions. The extended are better and should be how people experience these movies, even for the first time. They help to clarify some important things that were kind of vague in the theatrical cuts, but they're just more fun too.

I love the extended versions very much. However, I do believe that when you are introduced to this story, you do it with the theatrical version first. Let that set in with all of it's glory. Then go back and watch the extended versions to get that feeling all over again because you have new scenes to watch.

I was living in New Zealand when they were making these films. I often bumped into the cast and crew whilst out working. These films have a special place in my heart. Enjoy the other movies 👍
All that contrast that you guys point out is what Tolkien wanted to reflect with the concept of Industrialization and the environment, like man and progress to obtain power (from the perspective of Suaron's ambition and what Saruman does in Isengard) It is seen that it destroys the natural environment. Peter Jackson reflected this very well in how it is presented in the trilogy of books and in Tolkien's letters.

I'm glad a couple more folks have seen Lord of the Rings. It's a wonderful story and is the cornerstone of the Fantasy genre. These movies have also stood the test of time. There are few movie franchises that have even approached the quality, scale, and storytelling in these three films. It's one of the best trilogies ever made. If and when you guys finish this be it reacted to on this channel or not I will always advise a yearly re-watch of the Extended Editions. It's always worth it.
As for some notes I took for the reaction,
The Elves indeed barely notices the passing of time. Before things went very awry the original plan for them was that they were never supposed to linger in Middle Earth as they have. They were originally meant to travel West to the shores of the gods on a magical continent in the West. It's why you'll keep hearing about that in these three films. If you ever read into the lore of Middle Earth you'll find a breadth and depth of detail that explains nearly everything you see in Lord of the Rings and then some. in the Simarillion novel which explains the beginning of the development of the races of middle earth literally hundreds of years pass between the chapters from war to war and historical event to historical event since a majority of the characters in the novel are elves.
Arwen definitely didn't have confidence facing the Nine Ringwraiths either and the spell you see was actually a magical trap fashioned by Elrond and customized by Gandalf. It's meant to keep unwanted people and things out of the Elvish lands of Rivendell and literally washes them away. Not to mention, Ringwraiths don't like water because it's both a conveyance for magic in their world, a substance their undead bodies doesn't like representing life and nature, and any flowing water is the realm of the sea god, Ulmo. The Ring Wraiths are a perversion of life itself and water represents everything they are not.
Given you didn't watch the Extended cut there's a reason no one knows the whispering of the ring. It's in the perverse language of Mordor. It's a magical language Sauron created for only his army to use. However, to the free people of Middle Earth especially the magical and the people of old who remember the wars and evil it allowed and created it is not just difficult to listen to but sounds like evil in your head.
Though, for that matter a lot of languages in Middle Earth have a distinct impression to them but the Black Speech of Mordor and song like speech of the Elves are languages that almost have a magical quality to them. A part that never made it into the movies at all is when Sam and Frodo first leave the Shire that spend one night camping with a group of Elves that are traveling West to leave Middle Earth. Frodo knows a good degree of Elvish to communicate with them and talks far into the night with them in their language and Sam swears as he's nodding off to bed the longer they talk he can almost see what they're saying as it paints a literal magical vision of communicated speech in front of him which kind of can be traced to the fact Tolkien loved languages, prose, poems, words, speech, and communication and it shows in his work. He literally helped write the Oxford Dictionary in 1928.
The Balrog you see in the Mines of Moria is actually a demon of the old world. It's a former Angel that volunteered to be on the side of evil in a great conflict that's written in the Silmarillion novel. Gandalf is also an Angel alongside his fellow Wizards that were made to take the form of old mortal men and sent to Middle Earth following the 1st age to help protect and guide the fledgling races of the developing world.
Also, Galadriel isn't bad. She's just an old jaded soul. She did follow the plan at the beginning of time and left Middle Earth to join the gods in their heaven on Earth with the rest of her tribe but, she was used like many of the Elves of her tribe and they unfortunately turned against the gods and left Heaven only to come back to Middle Earth and find they had been deceived. The evil god during the 1st age had manipulated her people in Heaven through their greatest artisan who convinced most of his people to turn against their fellow elves and the gods and flee Heaven while nearly slaying another tribe of sea fairing elves and stole their ships. She and her tribe fought an endless war against the evil god during the 1st age of Middle Earth and were nearly wiped out. They barely survived the events of the 1st age and she was lucky enough to survive alongside her people that now only number in the tens of thousands when once they were a tribe of hundreds of thousands in heaven. She technically passes a test keeping herself from taking the ring and knows if they can defeat this last great threat to the world then she may just be able to pass into the West and return to Heaven after all.
But, anyways, enough of my my blather. I hope you guys continue reacting given each movie is better than the last and definitely worth reacting to or at the very least watching on your own time.
I know the extended editions are daunting but they give so much backstory you’ll be glad you watched them if you decide to. It’s a must for the next two if I’m being honest. Plus you can section the videos off in parts if you need!
The song being sung during the Balrog scenes is not jibberish but Neo-Khazdul which is a modernized revision of the few words and names Tolkien originally translated from Khazdul the secret language of dwarves. Part of what we hear is
Fire in the deep! Urus ni buzra!
Flames lick our skin! Arrâs talbabi fillumâ!
Fear rips our heart! Ugrûd tashniki kurdumâ!
No! No! No! Lu! Lu! Lu!
The demon comes! Urkhas tanakhi!
Also an important distinction, the movie primarily has Gandalf saying "you shall not pass" to the Balrog implying he will prevent the Balrog from crossing the bridge. In the book however Gandalf says "You CAN not pass" which is on a deeper level implying the Balrog had not the authority to cross the bridge because Gandalf had forbidden it and Gandalf's authority came from Eru'Illuvitar (God).
What’s great is the Māori men that actually played as the orcs also put their own chant vocal style into what became this track. They even blessed many of the actors and team members and did ceremonial rites. Even bonded with Viggo Mortensen/Aragorn deeply as shown on the passion project documentary !

There are vast numbers of potential new subs/likes out there, being LotR fans/nutcases. In recent months, several new youtubers have experienced the sudden spike in engagement from many new viewers as a result of reacting to LotR. Extra effort involved in editing for the extended editions is seriously appreciated. I've watched *many* LotR reaction videos, who start off with the theatrical edition of FotR, but then quickly realize their mistake and upgrade to the extended versions for TTT and RotK. I've never heard any of them begrudging the extra time and effort -- quite the opposite. Including more of the film, and more of your reactions, is not a waste for these monumental epics.
It's so obvious that Cara got deeply absorbed in FotR that I confidently predict she'll LOVE the extended versions and end up awash in a sea of her own tears by the end of the 3rd film. Bring plenty of tissues. (Seriously -- you'd be astonished at the volume of tissues consumed by many female reactors by the end of RotK.)
You also need to include more of the important dialog scenes. E.g., you skipped the bit where Gandalf gave Frodo some very sage advice in Moria, which ultimately has a deep influence on his subsequent choices after Gandalf's fall.
(*Edit:* I see that there's already an overwhelming number of commenters scolding you for not doing the extended versions. Is the message received?)
Extended cut is a must have :D. Maybe not this time but some time later. It is definitely worth it
You really need to watch all three movies, and watch the Extended Editions. “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy is universally considered a masterpiece, and why deprive yourself of more masterpiece? As you probably already know, the extended editions don’t just add a few seconds here and there. You learn so much about the characters, and if you don’t watch them, you may find yourself occasionally wondering why certain things happen the way they do. They’re a worthwhile investment.

Didn't expect to wake up to this, but this is a pleasant surprise indeed. Not watching the extended version for Fellowship is fine, but definitely recommend it for Two Towers and Return of the King.
Sauron pours most of his power, his malice, and his essence into his One Ring. As a consequence, it takes much longer than usual for him to regenerate a physical form without it. The Ring's purpose is absolute control, especially over those who bear the other Rings of Power, much like the Nine Men who were corrupted into becoming the Ringwraiths, the greatest of Sauron's slaves. He did try corrupting the Dwarves with the Seven, but they proved too hardy to bend to his will. The Three Elven Rings were made after the other 16 and without Sauron's involvement, so he doesn't have as much influence over them, making these Rings the most powerful outside of the One. We're told in the books that the Elven Rings are the ones Sauron wants the most. The owners of the Three Elven Rings are Galadriel, Elrond and Gandalf.
As a bit of a fun fact, Bilbo and Frodo share the same birthday. When Bilbo turns 111, Frodo comes of age at 33. The movie never specifies this, but by the time Frodo leaves the Shire, he is 50 years old. The fact that he doesn't look much different is evidence that the Ring has already started delaying his age. Sam is 38, Merry is 36, and Pippin is 28. This explains a lot of the dumb shit Gandalf keeps getting mad at Pippin for.
Thank you for commenting on Pippin's age!! So many people don't realise how much younger he is than the others and it really does explain so much about who he is. The whole journey really is his "coming of age" because he is around the equivalent to a 18-20 year old in human ages when they set off. In the book, Elrond even pushes back on Pippin specifically going on the journey because of his age! I love Pippin so much, if there's one thing I wish the movies had made more evident, it would be this (especially because Billy Boyd is the oldest of the 4 hobbit actors so it's not that clear that Pippin is Like That because he's kind of just a kid)
@@annafalcao9850 Indeed. It makes you appreciate Galadriel telling him (in the extended edition), "Do not fear, young Peregrin Took. You will find your courage," foreshadowing the growth Pippin goes through in this journey.
I don't know if someone covered this already but since you mentioned the horse Arwen was riding being a beauty... the stunt rider for Arwen fell in love with that horse, so Viggo (plays Aragorn) bought it for her.

Don’t get frightened by the length of the movies. The end credits take up the majority of extra time. And like so many others have stated, the extended cut is skippable for Fellowship but close to mandatory for Towers & Refurn.
They could have just uploaded it into two parts.

Finally deciding to watch the LOTR movies but *not* the extended editions is like starting Game of Thrones and saying "but I'm not gonna watch EVERY season."

Hey, I subbed so I don't miss the rest of the Trilogy. But I'll add my voice to the others, the EXTENDED versions is the way to go. and don't worry about the time, it will fly by. It happens every time someone is concerned about them being so long... you won't feel it!
This was a great reaction. I really hope you guys continue on this journey. It is truly worth it. I had the honor of watching these films as they were released. THESE movies, on the big screen are 10x even more impactful.
After you guys finish this trilogy, which I'm sure you will, maybe watch The Hobbit trilogy. It's the story of Bilbo and his adventures, 60 years before The Lord of The Rings tale. It was written as a childrens book, so the tone is a little "llighter" than Lord of the Rings. Nothing too scary, it's a little silly at times, but that's fine, You see some familiar faces and get a LOT of backstory to LOTR. it's pretty cool.
Anyway, can't wait for The Two Towers, Extended Edition.
