I'm so glad you finally spilled the beans about Ogre doing the vocals! I thought if it wasn't him, then it was an incredible impressionist. This is a fantastic track and it was so cool to get some behind-the-scenes history of it... especially that you knocked this one out in about 48 hours! Sometimes I wonder how many unsuspecting casual game players got turned on to industrial music from this song... I have a feeling if I wasn't already, I'd be seeking out more tunes like this!
I kept saying it was Ogre on that track, but people weren't convinced, I keep meaning to get a copy of Deepswell it's a cracking track. I love your Vids Ken it's certainly helped me up my game producing music
The SIMS!!!!! and Ogre, holy fucking shit! I have been playing the sims since the Sims (also known as the Sims 1) I made custom content for the Sims 2 I am still playing the Sims 4. I NEVER knew about this. Skinny Puppy is my favorite band, it is actually how I met my husband. I LOVE that you released this! I love this, thank you for sharing and all you do :)
Those industrial tunes where the last I would expect in a game like the Sims2. Awesome fun and informational stuff, as always. I love such backgrounds. Can imagine the fun behind the whole process making those tracks :) Thank you Ken. Cheers
Any chance you could dig into Convulsion from Too Dark Park? Would love to hear any and all about that song - was my introduction to the band, terrified me at the time, but within weeks my opinion changed completely and they quickly rocketed into my top 5 favourite bands where they've stayed ever since.
Omg, I would love to see you break down your Need for Speed tracks, if you still have them in your archives. Those soundtracks have been very influential to me. Thanks so much for the session!
One thing I have always loved about simlish songs is just how well they're constructed and produced. That level of quality has stayed consistent throughout the series, and has actually gotten better as well. I admit I never really dug the Industrial songs from Sims 2 when I was younger, but the Central Station music from Urbz has always been classic to me. This makes me appreciate the Sims games and the music going into them so much more. The technicality, and the fact that you got a legend of a vocalist on track? It's truly special to me. Always going to love Sims music. Thanks!
Aahh this is awesome!! I've always wanted to make video game music. You always post things that I'm trying to do! So funny to hear Ogre speaking Simlish
This track is really good (of course). This has that SP feel of course and Ogre's voice is so unmistakable. Another great vid and I have to ask. Just how many black sweaters do you have sir? :)
KEN. I love this stuff. This is blowing my mind. I've been a huge fan of the Sims since the beginning. I mean, like any console, I was playing it. I've read lots about the history and even music aspects. I've also been an SP/ ohGr fan for almost just as long. I didn't know about this and it's really cool.
Also, at 7:30 you mention your Revox machine. I remember talking to Alistair Hirst on Twitter and he told me he used the same machine for the delays on his NFS3 track "Warped" (another incredible industrial track).
Omg Ken you're so adorable, I love listening you talk about the breakdown of this and the fact that you got Ogre to do this rules so much. There's no one better for this, truly. This is genius!!! I can't believe I not only never heard this, but never even knew about it! Thanks for this little tidbit!!! Ultimate fun random factoid for Skinny Puppy/Ogre fans. This should be a Trivial Pursuit question!! Haha. I had this Goth board game that was basically goth/industrial/metal/dark wave trivial pursuit. This would've been great in there. It had horror, historical, music, film, type questions and you had to fill your grave plot with 13 tombstones to win! My first love brought me here. You deserve way more subscribers, and I think I fell in love with you watching this. Subbed and hit the bell! 💙❤🤘😉🤘❤💙
Superb as always, thx for the inspiration, Ken! Would love some "behind the scenes"/production stories from "The Last Man to Fly", one of my all time fav records👌
@@randy.wentzel "Engineered by Ken marshall". I suspect all of the guys produced it. The balls of the guys involved in that record is just..massive (no producer needed?)😁
Your other song “Static” is also really good. Unfortunate that there isn’t a non-simlish version. Really like your music from NFS Hot Pursuit 2 as well.
Coincidentally, I have Sims 2 on this PC right now. I got it as part of a free bundle and I load it up occasionally as a fun time waster. I had no clue that this track was in there. Haha!
Hopefully OhGr got a nice big sack of Canadian pesos from singing on the recording since he might not have got a song writing credit. Not only does OhGr have a distinct vocal style, he’s an original lyrical genius up there with Patti Smith, Leonard Cohen and Jim Morrison. Skinny Puppy are, to me, legends of rock and electronic music but I know the music industry has only been more and more brutal over the years and they only care about selling albums and tickets. Again, thanks for sharing, Ken!
Hey man, I know it's not as popular of a game as some of the others you've worked on, but I would LOVE it if you could make a video about your work on Freekstyle! :)
Hey Ken, do you plan on doing another collaboration? Looks like we're all gonna be quarantined for a while longer now. I'd love to be involved this time. I missed the last one. Thanks for sharing your wealth of knowledge with us on here. I'm a long time fan of your work!
As always thanks for your knowledge and inspiration. After watching your videos and can't wait to back you making my own music with my brain bursting with the nuggets of knowledge and techniques gleamed from your vids! Cheers! ( oh yeah quick question; how would you go about emulating your Revox tape delay "in the box" with just software? thx )
Awesome! Could you do a video on headphones, and the HEADPHONE AMP thing? Ohms, impedance, figuring out if you even NEED (or could use) a headphone amp? I have been using the Presonus 1810, and i want to use the Senheiser hd600s 250 ohm. It says to divide by 8, and that will be... my output impedance? Lol... but wtf does the 1810 support?! It says "headphone output: 150m/w 60 ohm". THAT HELPS A TON. Does that mean 250/8 = 37.5 ohm, and since it happens to say 60 ohm next to the headphone output specs, I'll be good because 60 is more than 37.5?! ITS WHAT PLANTS CRAVE?!?!
The rule of 8 is a guideline to keep frequency response as the manufacturer intended. You are correct, that you should be looking for a 37.5 ohm or lower source impedance BUT, you may also be good. Less than 1dB variance in frequency response can be had with as little as 2.5:1 ratios of source:load. You are probably fine with your source as long as you don't find yourself needing to max the headphone output to get enough volume in you phones. If you want to test them out, sweep a sine wave up and down slowly and listen for and large spikes/resonances. Compare you finding with manufacturer freq response plot as well. Sennheisers often have a little bass boost to them. All that being said, probably good. If everything translates well, don't sweat it. If your having issues with you low end translating, you may be able to do some corrective EQ on your output as in, an eq applied to correct the output you are monitoring that is removed before bouncing to master. I wouldn't advise this until you try to "learn" the phones first. On another note, when you get into looking for your next pair of phones, I advise Ultrasone ProLines. They translate extremely well with a unhyped but extended frequency response and have a unique driver design that significantly reduces ear fatigue. I have no affiliation, just love my two pairs. Had them for 12 years and still sound great. Just keep the deaf musicians away from them. They get cheapys because they will crank them up and destroy drivers.
Wibbs eset ralla jowlenin, badeesh! (translated from Simlish - "that was really interesting, thanks!") Sadly there was no translation for "Awesome song too!"
What?! Ogre in the Sims? What's next? Trent Reznor scoring a Pixar movie?!
I could listen to Ogre stories all day. Seems like a great dude.
In my experience meeting him and actually getting to chat for about 5mins, he is 💯!...
I've been following Skinny Puppy, ohGr and related projects for years. How the hell did I miss this track?!! Good stuff!!
Ogre is a true hero 🖤😁

I'd take anything off that album or Last Rights.
