How to do a 50 meter underwater swim (Olympic pool dynamic apnea)

  • Here are my top tips on how you can do a 50 meter dynamic apnea swim. 50 meters is the length of an Olympic pool.
This is also the length needed to swim under water to pass the entry tests of the Navy seals.
When training underwater you should always have a buddy to rescue you if you get a blackout. Never train alone

Please just a question! When I take a deep breath before I sink, I find difficult to stay under water, so I use more energy and I run out of oxygen quickly, and If I did not take a deep breath before sink, I run out of oxygen quickly, so how could I do it in effectiv way without wearing a belt?

Made my 50 meter swim, touched the edge then went into a blackout. Proud of myself for pushing my mind past the urge to breathe, but I’ll admit I gave into the panic near the end and began to swim faster. I burned a lot of oxygen doing that and is probably why I blacked out. Thanks for the info. (Of course, I had a buddy there for the swim. Always be safe)

@@BryanApperson So I reached the pool edge, surfaced, and got in a gasping breath or two. I was seeing stars and then next thing I remember was waking up in my buddy's arms. I managed to do this for the first time yesterday in a 25 meter pool. The need to relax after each armpull can't be understated. In my experience, if you're having to do five armpulls for 25 meters, that's one too many. Likely my greatest swimming feat in my life when I thought I'm no longer the swimmer I was as a teenager xD

    • @YuukioFitness9784
      @YuukioFitness9784 Год назад +1

@@nathanlieu6840 If 25 meters is comfortable for you, 50 should be within reach. The way I did it was working up to it progressively, starting from just turning at the other end for each set, then add the double arm pull, and then another, until I could do a set of 50 meters. It just takes practice and conditioning.

Very clear and easy to understand with a bit of wit 👍🏼😄
I just accomplished maybe 2 weeks a ago 20 m underwater with one breath and my goal is 50. This video is perfect timing.
With recent surgery a few days ago , I am restricted from the water for 6 weeks so I’m home getting guidance from RUclips and low and behold this video pops up for me!!

Christian! It worked! It worked!! This video got me through my 50 meter underwater swim as part of my SCUBA test! I watched this like 8 or 9 times the night before. When my turn came, I did exactly what I learned on THIS video! As I was approaching the end, that out of breath feeling began to creep in. I kept hearing your voice, do not be lured by the out of breath feeling. I just kept telling myself that I had enough air, and this was a natural reaction! I DID IT! I DID IT! there is NOOO way I would've been able to do it had I not discovered your video. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!

For the trained swimmers here. If you want to practice no breath freestyle (or butterfly for the suicidal) do 10x50m/yards. First 50 is 9 breaths. Next is 8. Then all the way down to none. I have done this twice, and holy shit it sucks. It is a great feeling having completed it and knowing that it will be another year until next time.

  • @lukelucas63

Diving physics states that the deeper you go the larger ratio of 02 to C02 in your lungs, meaning you'll go farther before you need to breathe, also the weight of the water will keep you down, making it easier to glide.

You don't use more oxygen the deeper you go, totally false. The deeper you go, the more the water pressure compresses your lungs, creating a higher O2 to CO ratio and therefore increasing one's breath. That comes straight from SEAL training.

When you dive down the volume of air in your lungs decreases and pressurises the air. That pressure pushes more oxygen into your bloodstream and your cells use it faster as it is more available. On the way up, the pressure in your lungs is far less and your body gets less oxygen from it. This is part of the reason that shallow water blackouts occur so much...

As a lifeguard at a pool (25 yards, 8 lanes and diving well), I started with only being able to swim 3 pool lengths. After 2 weeks, I could go 4 lengths. Each week after, I added another length until I was going 11 lengths (275 yards). A clear head, staying relaxed, slow controlled pulls and glides, as well as a strong kick helped a lot. My technique also improved. I also found that swimming along the very bottom made it easier. Being a shorter pool than 50m, I could take more advantage of the push offs from the wall, though. Keep in mind that I was a swimmer and long distance runner for years prior to doing this, so most of it was learning technique and practicing breathing control.

liloope I call bs. The world record for DNF free dive (aka what you just described) is 244 M. With a few months training and your background, you would be LUCKY to be able to swim 100 M on a single breath, a bit more if you were wearing fins. Those guys train for years and years in free diving to be able to reach even 200 M. Look up dnf world records and tell me you swam further than them.

After years of practice to go farther underwater with one breath for some reason my technique evolved to use my arms sequentially instead of both at the same time. I mean I stroke one arm first and the other one right after that. I measured that I go slightly farther by this way. I am not sure but I always thought as if some of the energy got lost into turbulance or something if I used both arms at the same time and fast.

Question please: I don't quite understand why going deeper consumes more oxygen. Why actually??
I dive 60m in a group of 3x20m. My pool is that short. But I NEVER touch the walls. So the hardest part is when I finish the second round, I have to bend the body (which I think makes a lot of bad to holding the breath) and then i always think "No, please, another 20m???"... But you know... you gotta keep calm... The 3x20 is not my everyday diving, but there I am...

Try doing what we call count down to zero. It's a six repetition set. You start by allowing yourself five breaths. The next pass you get four. On the last you will have none. PLAN where you are going to breathe. If you need more breaths than allotted, take them, then retry that allotment and keep counting down if you can. Only do the six passes. You can't build your lung capacity in a day and you will be fatigued by then. This can be done surface swimming (which has even more tricks) or in a 25m pool or both. To do an underwater turn, place your favorite hand on the wall and allow your body to face sideways, push with your hand and pull in your knees to rotate your feet to the wall parallel to the bottom. This is a Tennessee turn, not a flip turn.
Safety tip: if you start to pee, surface IMMEDIATELY, you are about to pass out.
Coolness tip: Do NOT be the person passed out on the bottom of the pool. That guy's an idiot. Don't be the guy that pees in the pool either; he's nasty.

One of these days, I have got to bring a tape measure. I know it's pretty large, but the local quarry has no information on exactly how big it is (width or length), but I know I can swim all the way across the width, and about 3/4 of the way across the length. Usually I'm stuck in tiny backyard pools, so they're rarely larger than 12 feet (3.6 meters) in length. Turning takes up too much energy so I can't really say for sure, but I've been swimming since before I could walk so that could be the reason I can get so far at the quarry.

Great primer on how to do this. Question: Do you find that bigger guys can last less time underwater? More body mass = more/faster oxygen consumption?

+Epi Ren if you see David Blaine's TED talk he said he had too loose some kg before he could attempt the world record.

I used to be able to swim 75meters underwater with no fins, I took 5 deep breaths and I did as you did in the video except I did was my teachers told me was called the dolphin swim.

maybe you can keep your nose to the bottom to be more streamline, also when you move your hands from back to forward, try to do it as close to your body so you spend less energy

Hi Christian! 2 years after... you hopefully know that this is a bad technique to go underwater, right?! You actually don't do the arm-stroke and the frog-kick at the same time because you loose a lot of energy here in the video... when you first dive into the water and your first gliding-phase nearly ends you do the first arm-stroke and next time you put your arms in front of your body but make the frog-kick first and then do the arm-stroke. What you do here is working against your gliding-phase from the frog-kick... if you can do 50m with your "technique" shown here you're propably able to do at least 75m which isn't a bad number for DNF-Pooldiving! ;)

I'm a swimmer, not a diver - so please take this as a sincere question and not a criticism - why do you hold your ankles in a 90-degree position like that? You'd have less drag and glide more if you point your toes. Is there a reason you use this position for long distance underwater? Again, sincere question here. :)

is the key to this having as little mass as possible? I really like swimming but I know I'm not built to be in the water and burn a ton of oxygen.

When I trained to freedive (at 13-14) I could do 50m (but it was a bit of a cheat as it was 25m pool and you could do a really god roll and take off again against the wall). But it was really strange as it was soo hard to do more then 50m. First 25 easy, then you need to push a bit but psychologically as you see the wall my brain just started to yes there is the finish line. I could not push myself more... really strange, I guess if it was a 50m pool I would have done longer underwater...
    It definitely has psychological component.

Am I right that swimming under 1 minute need no supervision and is safe of blackouts? Read this in some regulations in the past.
