This film is the about the politics of "centrist vs extremist...and if you don't think that counts as politics, your definition is too narrow." Perfect summary. I've seen a few reviews which have criticised the lack of specificity of the 'politics' of this film (by which they probably mean 'party politics'). His definition has confirmed what I had suspected that rather than this being a loose, or lazy, or untidy piece of work, it was making a more general larger point. This will possibly give it some longevity, rather than needing to be interpreted by viewers in the future. Also - great interviewer, I really love and appreciate these BFI pieces.
Astonishing and overdue, someone addresses the so called beauty surgery reality which is a pandemic. It's practically impossible to match old photos with current looks in not so few cases.
Really enjoyed the film but easy for people like alex in their ivory towers to criticise behaviours which are aimed at protecting one group against another. It's more nuanced and deserves more analysis
He probably would of liked to have went deeper into the subject but at the end of the day the film is funded by a studio and they need to make money on the film, not much room for deep analysis unfortunately
Oh Alex. Polarisation doesn’t lead to fascism, capitalism does. By blaming both sides you're telling people not to fight against the blatant fascism which is rising, as always, on the right side. If we dont fight them Alex, how do we defeat them? With more neoliberal centrism, which is the precise reason that people are turning to fascism?!
He was born into the newspaper establishment. He is so deep inside it he can't perceive the blatant corruption and anti-democratic practice of the media. Sadly when it comes to politics he is blinkered and ignorant due to his privileged upbringing.
Centrism is just the rightwing with 10% less evil. There is no real central ground between the two sides. One side represents only the rich and powerful and one side seeks to give normal people more of the wealth they generate and a fair share of power. We either put in effective controls against the rich corrupting democracy or we don't. There is no halfway point.
Some people aint fond of talking about their work in general and infront of 100s of people. Alex seems like one of these people. But I always enjoy him because of this, as what he says has more meaning.

That comment about plastic surgery is incredible.
That takes guts to just say that out loud as a director who works with actors on a regular basis.
can't believe I missed this
i loved his film MEN , greenaway vibes , which is no bad thing.

Left wing policy generally is about helping everybody and protecting marginalized groups. So polarizing!
Does he really mean what he says about BBC journalists or MSM journalists in general TODAY , RN especially with what’s going on in GAZA??? ….

Alex come on she has lived. But Kirsten is a beautiful woman. anyway.
He never said otherwise.
Centrism is an illusion.

Why does Alex seem annoyed with talking about a film he made lol
He’s probably annoyed that people “don’t get it.”
Too many people miss the point of the movie and he’s probably had to explain things over and over

He's very uncomfortable socially and doesn't seem to like public speaking.
Kinda rude lol
