The Nuclear Tank: Chrysler's TV-8
HTML-код

- There were a lot of wacky tank concepts spawned during the early Cold War, but probably the most insane was the Chrysler TV-8 nuclear powered tank, developed as part of the US Army's ASTRON tank program. What could possibly go wrong with an amphibious tank running off of nuclear fuel that also has a turret heavier than its hull? A lot, I imagine.

They could also use lasers as a secondary weapon and an electromagnetic forcefield on the tank to help with defense against rpgs
Retrofuturistic tank
If this gets added to War Thunder, upon the tank's destruction, the reactor would contaminate the surrounding area and would slowly injure the crew of any vehicle within a certain radius of it, unless the vehicle is one of a handful tagged as having CBRN protection (pretty much exclusive to high-tier stuff without oscillating turrets).
Make it an april fools lmfao.
Unless the surrounding tanks have biological and nuclear protection
Nah Gaijin should make it that if the tank get destroyed every tank and planes with a 10 mile radius also get destroy because the designer of the tank decided to put the nuclear reactor in the turret. Also tanks that enter the 10 mile radius after the explosion well have their crew weaken because radiation.
@@mcphan6881 That’s what I was saying. CBRN stands for “Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear”.

50s-60s tanks are my absolute favorite. The designers were like “right, what if we did this, but the whole thing is made of uranium”
I mean really that goes for almost everything from the 50s and 60s, engineers suddenly decided that everything could be solved with nukes and nuclear power which led to some really hilarious and impractical ideas.

1:33 Even Spookston isn't immune to HEAT "produces a molten copper jet", which has been disproven by actual US Army testing. Edit: Reference ARL-SR-150
Hello. I have a very high interest in such tests. Where can I find something about them?
I assume you mean the fact the copper isn't in a liquid state because of temperature but because of the intense pressure from the explosion

3:10 the big reason in Sci-fi mech development that Nuclear fission engines are a terrible idea. Looking at you Gundam SEED.
I wouldn't mind if TV-8 is going to be some event tank in WT
Instead of dropping nukes you drop a TV-8
Utterly stupid and useless? Of course. But it would be fun to see.
Whenever it explodes it would slowly kill the crew of every other tank
I sure hope so. It probably won't be added though because not even a prototype was built. It is more realistic to believe that it will pop up as a playable vehicle in some event game mode.
The only problem is that gaijin would probably make it like 8.0
Honestly, I wish people talking about this tank would focus less on the fact that there is a nuclear power plant proposed. It doesn't seem to be the main focus of the vehicle. This would be very interesting to see for a war thunder mod or something similar.
spookston:"ive seen people claim that a prototype was made but that is just not true"
me:"ferb, i think i know what we're doing today"
Was fun seeing this referenced in the Loki episode.
Chrysler should stick to making cars. Their TV'S are very dangerous
I mean they can't even build a transmission to handle a diesel that reactor would go meltdown from startup.
Nuclear-powered TV's actually sound like an existing '50s concept, regardless of the sheer ridiculousness.
@@wireworks4252 technically there are already nuclear powered TV, they just have a very long extension cord
Chrysler is FIAT, and FIAT can't build cars either.

Thinking about it like that, its a brilliant idea. Does the enemy either a. Risk a catastrophic radiation leak by attacking you, rendering the target area unlovable. Or B, just let you take the target area with the hope that they can retake it later when the mobile RBMK isn't there.
@@TolerablyInterested That's what i always thought. Do you think nuclear tanks and armament would have the same effect that nukes have? (mutual annihilation).

I've always found it ironic how the most destructive weapon humanity has ever created is so powerful that it doesn't even need to be used.
@@alanwatts8239 it is a weird one isn't it? I wouldn't necessarily say don't need to be used, I'd say can't practically be used, as soon as one country pokes the red button, everyone else will then boom, no one left to use the weapons.
It's so crazy seeing spookston upload about the TV-8 just days before it showed up in Loki. I wonder if it is the first ever depiction of the TV-8 in modern media.
Amazing how it had cameras so the crew wouldn't go blind off a nuclear flash. Really tells you how close we were to war
pretty much everything the us had that was in some way nuclear related had protection for the flash, bombers with special sunshades, some pilots (i think for the f-106, and other nuclear capable aircraft) would wear an eyepatch when deploying a nuke just in case the shades didn't work, they would be left with at least one good eye.
Here's a bit of funny pop culture for you... in Loki episode 5, right around the 37:30 minute mark, one of these tanks can be seen overgrown and partially buried, as well as damaged, but the shape is unmistakable and it's on screen enough it could be nothing else.
Its a bit sad that i actually recognised what tank that was when i saw it
@@stastu6484 I like the implication is that someone somewhere sometime thought that it would be a smart idea to build one of these

What you get when engineers get high on their job: a huge target, that kills its crew, has a bad gun, terrible mobility on land but can float (maybe). Never DUI (design under influence)

Hey spookston, if you ever make another wierd tank prototypes vid, please include the Aerie and Falcon from the book by Hunnicutt about the history of the M1 Abrams, it's such a ridiculous looking thing that more people should know about it. It's around page 34.
Just here to say that I regularly drive a Maus and the vehicle your driving is the bane of my existence, and all German heavies for that matter.
I also saw a plan to make a portable nuclear generator for military bases... sounds good until an insungent lobs a few mortar shells right into it
Amazing video
We need a video on large caliber self propelled guns since they are already in warthunder and provided a vital support role
Can't believe the TV8 is in the new looking series episode
"Enemy spotted!"
"Fire!"
"Direct hit!"
5 years later: "Today we remember the nuclear fallout that happened 5 years ago on the battlefield"
I imagine it being a reasonable concept now with the advances in nuclear technology
The #1 challenge of designing a viable nuclear-powered tank would be an efficient method of storing all that energy when not in use (AKA when you're not moving) as nuclear reactors are so slow to gain or decrease their output. You'd either need some amazing flywheels (could be directly attached to the engine drive shaft), a huge battery or a way to reliably piss away all that energy constantly.
Challenge #2 would be an electric engine(s) capable of driving both the reactor setup and the tank itself which back in the day would have to be huge.. Today however, we're getting really good at creating micro nuclear reactors that can fart out as much as 20 MW and companies like Tesla are mass-producing 500+ horsepower electric engines with massive amounts of torque that only draw like 15-20 KW.
Once you look at all the facts, it's really surprising fully electric tanks haven't been made standard yet.
This is like a battletech tank lmao
when you see a tank floating in the water so you shoot at it with ur Dska and it sinks
I'd love to see a historic video on the T92 light tank program, or maybe the interesting history of US post-war light tanks in general.

Speaking of oversized: a 152mm revolver cannon was considered at some point. I recently stumbled across the DTIC document suggesting it, but I haven't had a chance to read it yet. Seems to be from the gun/launcher program that led to the M551's gun.

Yep, that was the easter egg I was most excited for! Lol
@@abysmalprosecutor6182 I was honestly more excited of their making the Thanoscopter canon but I will admit I nearly choked on my dinner when I saw the TV-8. Its not a really well known tank and it really doesn't have much reason to be in a marvel tv show but I won't complain that this unique design gets a little time in the sun.
Me after dropping my friends TV while helping home move: "The TV was also very unbalanced."
If is we’re to get shot that’s just a big loss of money
Harkening back to the tanks roots; from WWI where the engine exhaust vented in the crew cabin to space age technology where you crew gets eventually exposed to lethal amounts of radiation from on onboard nuclear reactor.
Nuclear tank?
Well if there's a nuclear tank I can't wait for there to be a nuclear helicopter
Dragonfly probe might count.
*B i g B r a i n*
Tank with a nuclear reactor seems crazy and unrealistic, but both USA and USSR had actual plane prototypes with nuclear reactors flying around at that time. Both counties thankfully abandoned those projects in early 60-s.
Wouldn't suprised me if this thing existed at some point in the Fallout universe.
I did *not* know this thing was meant to be amphibious, I guess that explains the bizare shape.
Also subnautica music huh? Works pretty well here.

BWR would have spread radiations and created a steam explosion, but a MSR solved these problems when the USAF asked for a nuclear powered bomber.
These reactor are wayyy safer than anything else.. in the end, the lobbying of the USN won and BWR and later EPR were the standard reactor design
They could use the tank reactor power to shoot a railgun, which could replace the usual gun

Funnily enough I saw this tank in the latest episode of Loki
Is Gajin going to add that into the game or why did you talk about that tank?
About radiation danger if a reactor is build well there is no risk of radiation killing you and in fact the little ammout of radiation that escapes makes you build tolerance that makes you even more resistant to radiation so swaping crews would not be a necesity
