i remember reading about this tank. i don't think it was meant to be nuclear powered, but to fight in a battlefield where tactical nukes were in use.
the turret is shaped the way it is to let the pressure wave from a blast pass by without flipping the tank, the anti-radiation shielding wasn't to shield a nuclear engine but to protect from the general radioactivity of a nuclear battlefield. it's amphibious because they thought that all the bridges would be destroyed within the first few days of fighting, that's why the air intakes are on the roof. a nuclear engine wouldn't need air intakes.
me: HAHAHAHAHAHA! I AM *UNSTOPPA-*
TV-8: _Slow down there buckaroo._
So Shryler was intended for Nuclear battlefield
A reactor would absolutely need air intakes. Fission makes heat. If you don't get rid of that heat fast enough, you have chernobyl.

Back in the 50s they tried to put nuclear reactors in everything-- bombers, tanks, cars. Yes, cars. Ford mocked up a model for a nuclear powered car in 1958.

When I hear that it was designed to keep the crew radiation free, I just remember all the times I have sit at the back of a Bradley inhaling fumes.
A Tank powered by a nuclear reactor
Americans: It's safe, trust me!
It actually would have been quite safe though. The tank was to be designed with a layer of shielding around the reactor to protect the crew from the radiation, and damage to it would not result in a nuclear explosion, contrary to popular belief. Sure, the leakage is dangerous if the reactor is penetrated by a shot, but so is it dangerous when an M1 Abrams tank is penetrated just about anywhere, as the dust particles from the fragmented Titanium alloy armour and/or the Depleted Uranium inserts can be toxic when inhaled.
cause its *pOwErD bY FreeDoM*
I mean....reactors are pretty safe though
@Magni56 abrams have yet to be destroyed, it's still safe.
xxFalconArasxx yes because everyone knows nuclear reactors are safe when exposed. Which they would be if the tank gets hit by a bomb.
If Megamind ever made a tank, he would make this. (yes, including the nuclear engine)

Doofenschmirtz would add a self-destruct button that doesn’t release nuclear radiation in doing so 😂.

The TV-8 had multiple engine options.
1. A V8.
2. A turbine.
3. A vapor cycle power plant.
4. A nuclear reactor.
All output around 300 HP and had an electric transmission.
Also the ammunition was stored in the turret the hull only held fuel and the electric motors for the tracks.

Well that my friend, is what you call milsim (arma 3, squad, etc.)
The TV-8 with the nuclear reactor as power had the range to get it from Paris to Moscow then to Odessa Ukraine before needing refueling and the tank had closed circuit televions inside the tank to allow the crew to see so they wont get blinded by a nuclear blast, it was designed with the idea that tactical nuclear weapons would be the norm for battlefields of the future

nice one, subscribed...keep'em comin...
I noticed something. There's exhaust or steam coming out the back. It wouldn't make exhaust because it doesn't have a gas or diesel engine, but it wouldn't expel stream either right? The reactor heats water, which drives a turbine, which powers the vehicle. The steam would be routed to the radiator up top to be condensed and fed back to the reactor. It would have to be a closed cycle or you'd quickly run out of water. The whole point of a nuke tank is that you don't have to refuel for a year. If you ran out of water all the time, it wouldn't make sense.

it was designed to fire nuclear ammunition, and the strange design of the turet was to protect the crew from the nuclear blast.
Yes! I agree with your thoughts 100%
They need to have some game mode that incorporates bigger, open maps.
Each ground map can be extended quite some way, they all have a lot of ground around the little part of the map that actually gets used.
For example, I found the abandoned factory map by accident recently, in an Air AB game, lol. The map is Deadly June I think, and is huge in it's entirety, such a waste to think of all the different battles and things that could be going on.
They need to make an enduring confrontation mode that incorporate ground vehicles!
7:24 YESSSSS I WANT THIS SOOO BAD, THAT WOULD BE PERFECT i was thinking about a game mode like this too longer games, bigger maps, kinda like enduring confrontation but un rb
YES! Oh my God PHLY I so agree with you about the big scale battles. I really like war thunder and I have been playing since early 2014 but I always missed true WWII immersion because of that short, intense firefights. I would rather have long (like 0,5-1,5h) battles, simulating true WWII sceneries and with historical content in them. That would be just totally RAD!!!
cheers and keep up a good work :)
Absolutely! Had WWII continued for even one more year the shear level of technological innovation towards warfare would have grown exponentially
It actually had spaced armor on the turret so heat rounds would prove ineffective. The inside was a heavily armored hull surrounded by the lightweight shell, which made it look like a ridiculous ass pod
7:24 that's literally Battlefield's Conquest mode you described.
"I wish WW2 was still going on" - PhlyDaily
He got a civil war and ww3 instead lol
I love this Chanel keep up the good work man
Its a good idea as a last resort suicide defense mission or attacking enemy land mission where you basically make the battlefield toxic for ground troops or you pollute the ground water if the enemy decides to engage. Basically you can shoot at them and they don't want to shoot you. A dirty rocket would probably be faster, as effective, and less suicidal.
honestly though, i think a scaled-up war thunder would be so much fun lol. it already feels like bs with all the shots people get off- i would actually be so happy getting pissed off from longer ranges

I totally agree with you on Alaska Phly. That would be sick
Believe it or not, the design made a ton of sense. I believe it was kind of a Xenomorph tank. Yes, it would have been easy to penetrate, but it was a tank you dared not kill. Like you said, if you hit a reactor, MOST of the time **key word most** what you will get is a meltdown or leak/fall out. Either way you would kill everything for miles by just destroying one. So you would be kind of helpless if this thing showed up on the battlefield. It can shoot you but you cannot shoot it. For that reason I would paint a massive radiation symbol on it too, as a warning: "Try it and fry, snitch!" to my enemies. It and its crew protected by mutually assured destruction. Refuse to surrender? It has everything it needs to be a W.M.D. if you set it up to properly detonate. I am glad the wars stopped when they did. There would not have been a world left if we saw these.
is phly talkin about endouring confrontation for tanks?? cause that's what longer battles with bigger maps are

cnlbenmc it’s an American design,
Whoever designed it was probably thinking : what if we put a nuclear engine on a tank? And nothing else...
Here's a bit of funny pop culture for you in the latest episode of Loki episode 5 to be specific right around the 37:30 minute mark, one of these tanks can be seen overgrown and partially buried, but the shape is unmistakable.
That TV-8 tank name spells like TVA
@@jochananergantheo9109 I don't think the TVA is insane enough to use a tank with a nuclear reactor in a hilariously exposed turret.
Also it shows up in the world that's essentially The Dumping Ground for everything that they reset or prune, so it means sometime, somewhere, someone thought this would be a good idea.
I had an ancestor that worked on the prototype of that tank. He was shot in the chest and pelvis and died of blood loss when the factory the tank was being made in was raided by a Russian tank brigade. He was 23 when he died. So young, but hay he probably only made like 20 bucs an hour
Forgot to add the if the tank ever made it onto the field the crew of the thing would have had to have worn full hazmat suits dew to mild radiation. 6 rads per sec
YEEEESSSSS!!!! we had the Soviet nuke tank a while ago, now we’ve got the Freedom Bois as well💯💯💯

It’s full name is the Chrysler TV-8.
The original design was able to go on the water, because of the shape of the turret shape, and a propeller at the back of the turret.
Very good back peddle at the beginning
