- Kasbeswari Kali Mata or Kamalasagar Kali Temple was built on a hilltop by Maharaja Dhanya Manikya in the late 15th century. It is situated on the Bangladesh border, The beautiful lake, Kamalasagar, in front of this temple has the border running on its three sides.
The murti of Kamalasagar Kali temple is called Kasbeswari Kali, which is actually the murti of the goddess Dasabhuja Durga or Mahishasurmardini. This 15th-century murti is made of sandstone and the existing temple was built in the 17th century. Although it is the murti of Ma Durga, it is worshipped as Maa Kali. Also, there is a Shivalinga sculpture at the feet of the idol.
As per local lore, the Devi was in another temple. The Goddess came in the king's dream one night asking to shift her location. The king was in a dilemma about where should he shift the Devi. The Devi again came in his dream later, telling the king to place the murti on the royal elephant, and wherever it stopped, that would be the spot. The elephant stopped at this location and the temple was built there.
The king dug a pushkarni on the right of the temple, but no water was found. The try on the other side yielded similar results. Again, the king was puzzled if some shortcomings were there in building the temple due to which this was happening. The Devi again came in his dream, asking that a lake be dug in front of the temple and Puja for it be performed by the Queen. When this was done, water gushed from below filling the lake, and the Queen, Kamla, disappeared in its depths. Hence the lake is known as Kamla Sagar. It never dries up and has remained full ever since.
