Thanks for all the effort in producing reviews that take into account the wants and needs of bird photographers. A question, am in the process of acquiring an R5/100-500 and was wondering if the noise issue with Adobe was ever addressed?
This has been super helpful - thanks so much. I couldn't work out why the noise was so bad in lightroom when the ISO on the R5 was way under 32000. I have the Canon DPP software now which operates like a government program unfortunately, but worth it. This vid was succinct and had no rambling, no gaps and long pauses with information that was irrelevant and boring - great info. I also appreciated the testing at around 9:30. I can't stand it when people don't replicate the environment that you are actually using a high ISO in. Great comparisons and definitely worth subscribing.

Great video Glenn! I really liked how you talked about all aspects of the camera and not just focus on the eye detect autofocus, which is what a lot of videos seem to concentrate on. That's great, but there's a lot more to the camera than just that. I'm looking at getting one this fall. I currently shoot with a 5DSr, so the resolution will be similar for me. Your bufflehead pictures are amazing. I hope to get some practice with those when they get back down into the Olympia area this fall. What a lot of people may not appreciate is that they fly super fast over the water, so tracking them and getting them and focus the way you did is no small feat. It's a credit to both your technique and the camera's autofocusing system put together. Your recent swallow photos were awesome as well! Thanks for the great review from a bird photographers perspective.
I totally agree with you on everything you said in this video. You are the only reviewer I totally agree with. We are exactly on the same page. Awesome real world review. I do use the ring on the big prime to pre-set the focus. Yup, once you lose the focus, it is hard to bump it back. That pre-focus ring is a great workaround.
Go Glenn. Go Cannon ! About the problem of losing focus on the background and ‘freezing’ there, Glenn other reviewers have noted the same thing. You’re not imagining it ! Some reviewers thought this tendency happens more frequently with the non RF lenses and adapters. A very complete and honest review I feel. Thanks so much.
Great review. I completely agree with all of your findings after I have used to R5 for more than a half year. I used to shoot with 7D mk ii and 1DX mk ii but I have sold the 7D mk ii and I am trying to sell the 1DX mk ii as well. My wife has replaced her 80D with a R5 as well and we recently bought a R6 as secondary body (often long lens on R5, shorter zoom on secondar body) as it is very similar to the R5. The R5 / R6 are not as rugged as the 7D mk ii and the 1DX mk ii though but that is rarely important. Hint for good lazy low shots of frogs in the water: Set C1 up with shutter button focus and animal eye detect; hold the lens just above the water with the left hand on the tripod foot and point on the frog with the right hand on the camera and the finger on the trigger; let the IS and animal eye focus do its magic and get the shot.
Currently shooting with a Sony A7Riii, and thinking of getting(switching to?) a Canon R5. From test images I've downloaded, they seem really similar in terms of iso performance, and I can say I've printed wildlife shots at iso 12800 up to 17"x11" and been very happy with the print.
@@GlennBartley Thankfully, I don't have a ton of glass yet. I was considering going all out on a Sony A1 and the 100-400 GM lens, but saw some reviews indicating that the Canon R5 holds its own against the Sony in autofocus, has similar resolution(45 vs 50), plenty of burst speed(20 vs 30), and costs a LOT less. In fact, the R5 and the 100-500 L lens combined cost about the same as just the Sony body. I might lose a little selling my other lenses and buying equivalents, but I spend SO much time at the long end, I'm not worried about that.
Glenn- if it's been covered then dis regard. I have mine setup with triple back button AF and one of those is the single point. When the eye tracking goes beyond i hit the single point on the branch or rock and it comes back and then you are good to go with eye detect again. Works pretty fast once you get used to it.
excellent review Glenn. Jan Wegener in australia has a solutionfor the autofocus issue you mentioned.. Double back button focus. Video on setting it up on You tube.
That is also how I set up my camera. But that is not the issue I describe. What I am talking about has to do with the way the AF works on mirrorless cameras.
I went out one day to a 5-hour birding even with the grip on my r5 and came home with 9000+ shots on the same set of batteries. I changed them out before the camera got out of H+ Green, so it never got about the 12 fps. That means those batteries still had ~50% charge (H+ Green will sometimes keep working to around ~45% charge).
Thanks for this informative video.I have had my R5 for just a couple of weeks and also came from using a 7D MKII with which I was never wildly impressed with and never really liked shooting over 800 iso. The R5 is stunning by comparison with my Sigma 500 f4 sport, not so much with the extenders but is pretty good with the 1.4x Once I had customised the settings for double BBF I pretty much got the hang of it in a couple of days. I have only ever used Canon dpp since my first dslr the Canon 10D.

Glenn: Thank you! An insightful video. I owned a R5 for a couple of weeks and ended up returning it, due to the frustration of the focus problem you mention where the camera was not able to find an out of focus bird at relatively close range.....(if it did focus, tended to focus on the background). Didn’t test the R5 thoroughly enough to see some of the advantages you did. Liked the idea of you mentioned of using the pre-focus setting and turning that thin ring slightly to have the focus reset to the prefocus point. At the time I received my R5, there was no full time manual focus override (when in the AF mode, the manual focus ring would remain disengaged until the R5 focused on something…..only after that happened would the manual focusing ring work…..or I could mechanically switch the focus slider on the lens to MF). That was very frustrating because the override was not available when the camera was locked up, the AF not able to focus on anything (which happened frequently) Months after returning my camera I saw that Canon issued a software update on the R5 that allowed full time manual focus override with “certain lenses”. If the long lens shwon in your video was an EF lens (I have a EF 600mm f/4 IS II) do you now have full time manual focus override (meaning you can manually focus the lens at any time while in AF mode at any time by simply turning the focusing ring)? Curious. This would be a big plus. Thanks Ron
I'm not totally sure about the MF thing. Id have to try it. I think you packed it in a bit early on the R5. In my opinion it is by far teh best camera Canon has ever made. Until the R3 comes out anyways...
You're spot-on with Adobe and Canon. I pay both a lot of money, it is time to demand the both do better. Dollars talk and this needs to end. There are those Color Fidelity profiles for Lightroom. And you are right, I have dumped by DSLRs and my old 7DM2 is now my Zoom webcam. :) Thanks for the video and your thoughts. I gotta go try that button now. PS. This is a great review, Glenn. It was very interesting to get your impressions and see your results. When it comes to the focus issue, there is an R5 menu setting that tells the camera to give up trying to focus if it is initially unsuccessful in finding it. I'm curious if you have that enabled or disabled. Also, can't you just go to your other back focus button to reactivate focus? I noticed you were referring the CFexpress cards that the R5 uses as CFast cards. I'm sure you just misspoke but for anyone else viewing this, understand that these are different card types. CFexpress cards are faster and overall superior. They are the future. If anyone already owns any fast UHS-II V90 class SDXC cards, it's good advice to utilize those if you can. However, at least in the US, the price difference between UHS-II V90 class SDXC cards and CFexpress cards can be less than $100. Buying a new high-end SDXC card will offer backwards compatibility with older cameras but CFexpress is the future. If you don't need backwards compatibility, the smarter play might be to buy CFexpress.
Great thoughts Timothy! You can certainly use back button to try to re-focus. But if the focus has slipped to the background you need to point it at a new target to get it to start hunting for closer objects again. Even if you are technically perfectly aligned with your subject and focus has gone to the BG it will simply not start looking again. So for example you could aim the camera at the ground or a tree that is near the bird and then re-frame and try to focus again. It is quite a pain. No settings on the camera will help. You have basically 3 options. Recompose as I just described. Manually refocus. Use the focus ring as I describe in the video. Cheers!
Good all round and honest review Glenn & I concur with most points made after using my R5 for 7Mths. Glad to hear you make mention also of the less then satisfactory CR3 file support from Adobe. Capture One handles the CR3's reasonably well (yes, at additional cost) but does a much better job than Adobe (at the time of this note) ...and as you say & would expect, Canon DDP handles the CR3 files well but is a bit of a pain to use if you have to learn it from scratch.
So this is a really comprehensive review it is the third time l have watched in full. I don't mind having to manually pull focus back, l always manually prefocus then hit eye focus or one of the other 2 focus set ups l have. No it is not perfect as you say but with 3 back button set ups you can rarely go wrong. I have single point set up then eye and face tracking for animals then a third button set to single point with subject tracking with eye and face. Used in combination you can rarely miss. As good as the ISO is supposed to be on my R6 l keep it at max 6400 and in Lightroom still not happy with how often have to go to noise reduction. With the R6 only having 20mp l cannot use aps c mode so max out at 840mm with a 1.4 converter. I only use CRAW it makes the 20mp files so small and fast. These cameras are getting so good l think our expectations get higher but as you said once you tried it there no going back.
Excellent review! I understand that the 1.6 crop mode may make it easier for the photographer to get the AF point on the eye since the bird will appear larger in the viewfinder. But since the camera’s AF works entirely off of the sensor and going into crop mode has no effect on what the sensor sees, I don’t see how it could affect the camera’s AF or eye detect performance.
It sure seemed to when I was on that pileated woodpecker. Not sure. Maybe not distracted by the area not included in the image?? I know what you mean. But in the field that's how it seemed to me.
@@GlennBartley I thought the same thing Glen that putting it in crop mode helped the camera find the eye better. Not sure about that though. As a test, I put up a bird image on my computer and then used the camera to see how quickly it found the bird's eye on the computer when the image was big in the viewfinder and when it was small - even tiny - and the speed of focus acquisition seems the same.
Agree that DPP is clunky, but it is native software for Canon. It supports all of the EF and RF lenses as well as the TC. I have been using it for quite some time and am happy with it. Your review of R5 definitely helps.
You got my subscription and like when you admitted that Adobe is not the only game in town. I did not realize DPP was so terrible. I use it all the time. It may be better for people like me who do not process thousand image batches all at the same 'presets' but you can cut and paste recipes to similar images. I do this to prepare a group for Depth Compositing but it would work for a wedding bunch, I guess. I use DPP to make a TIF (16 bit) and finish it off using Topaz, Affinity (just learning this) and an old version of Photoshop Elements as needed. There is always more than one way to do anything.
All R5/R6 and other mirrorless cameras, including my R6, have the eye detect problem with a busy background, so I use the dual back-button focus technique, as a work around as I do not have the luxury of big bucks for long primes.
Excellent in depth review. Re eye detection, I set the star button to switch that on. So initially normal focus, then press star with my thumb and it goes to eye detection. I also set that button for video animal detect and it goes straight to the bird eye. I also noticed the Adobe awful noise in canon raw files comparing to DPP, its absolutely terrible. I open the files in DPP first for a quick sort to see the quality before going to lightroom and wouldn't trust Adobe for my decisions on keepers to be honest, I always check in DPP before deciding. It's strange
Yes its crazy how different the file handling is. With good settings Adobe is still very usable up to ISO 3200 IMO. But after that you really need to use DPP to process the RAW files.
Hi Glen, thanks for the review and much appreciated practical information as I was looking to upgrade to the R5 in the future. With the new R3 announcement I will need to look at those specs before deciding on which future upgrades to do.
Thanks Glenn for such an honest review. I have the camera since it came out and everything you have referred to I have experienced except, I haven’t tried the 2x converter with the 500 F4 II I have and I haven’t looked closely at the high iso difference between Camera Raw and Canon DPP. I did notice that Camera Raw did not seem to do as good a job on the raw files. When I looked back the EOS R raw files they looked fantastic by comparison. So, I would agree that there is something seriously going on there. I thoroughly enjoyed your video and I thoroughly enjoy using the R5.
Your vlogs are always good value Glenn. I believe the issue you describe at 6.45 mins has afflicted others, like Duade Patton on his R6. I'm hoping it will be correctible with a firmware upgrade.
Nice video!!! One note on the cf cards they are considerably faster downloading speed. I have been tossing around CRAW, but haven’t fully committed. Thank you for great info!! I definitely love my R5.
Nice review, I've been shooting with the R6 for a few months now and yes even it is a fantastic camera for wildlife photographers. Since it's a 20 megapixel sensor the 1.6 crop doesn't work quite as well as on the R5. I'll have to try the 2x TC as I also never used it on the 7D MK II.
Thank you for a great review and sticking just to the subject at hand. I was looking for an ISO comparison as getting speed up in low light is difficult. It was great to download your photos and and to be able to zoom in and try deNoise on the high ISO ones. I couldn't see any difference in the compressed one either. I would like to replace my 5D3 (landscape) & 7D2 (wildlife) with just one camera, so I was particularly interested in the positives for wildlife. I was pleased to see that you were using EF lenses as we have 6 we share and I didn't want to have to replace them all
Hi Glenn, I thoroughly enjoyed your review of the R5. I have switched to a complete Sony system (a9ii, a1 , 600mm f4 and 200-600mm with teleconverters) but find that these camera systems have much in common. Your analysis in low light and using crop mode is also valid for the Sony a1. Like you said, after using these top mirrorless cameras it’s impossible to go back!
Nice review Glenn. Regarding the autofocus hunting, I have enabled touch and drag AF and put the active touch area to the top right so even looking into the VF, I can easily use my right thumb and move the point to wherever I want the camere to focus. Not sure if using teleconverter will reduce the focus area but you can give it a try.
Glenn! Many thanks for the video. 2 things 1. Re the prefocus button on the 500mm MK2. My one does not work.(I have found this from others) I thought to use it to get around the incorrect focus point. 2. In this video. If this camera is an R5 it's not the same as mine or any i have seen in the UK. Russ.
Great review, it's nice to see some local birds featured (and local conditions, I'm in Metchosin) I've had the R5 since last July and it replaced my 7D. It's a superb piece of gear. I've added the 800mm F11,so ISOs like 3200 are the norm, I agree with you regarding the Adobe Raw noise, it sucks, but DPP is soooo clunky to use! Topaz really helps but I wish Adobe and Canon would figure things out!
First off, to answer your question, @ 4:45, heck yes ! And if were not quite as sharp and clean as you wanted it, it wouldn't be anything that Topaz couldn't fix :) I've worked with a lot of shots that were not near as good, and still made them useable :) Can't wait for my R5 to get here in a few days :) Also, I was so glad to here you talk about the better than expected battery life... I also have a Canon battery grip coming, and 2000+ shot battery life is totally okay by me. Especially since I have 6 extra batteries laying around as well :)
Hi Glenn, another great review and thanks for the R5 set up guide I have bought your guides for the DX2 and DX3 in the past and have been great, I use the manual focus override when the camera gets stuck on the background, one thing I would like to add and maybe you could look into this after a lot of reading I found the reason photos look better in DPP is that DPP automatically adds noise reduction, where as Lightroom doesn't, the workflow on DPP is terrible as you said. Also and this is my personal opinion for fast action wildlife I still prefer my DX3 on my 600mm Mk2 I think the big lens just focuses quicker, maybe something to do with the larger battery I don't know.
Good thoughts Tony! My issue with ACR is that even if I went into the noise / details settings and played around I couldn't get the files anywhere near as good as DPP. But I think I have a solution. Stay tuned for a new video this week!

Wow! Haven't tried mine with the 2X, but I will now! By the way, the crop mode is just a crop in for the VF, which makes it easier to see. It has zero impact on the photo other than to crop out some of the image. I'm just saying that because it yields no extra reach for the r5, beyond what you see in the EVF (which, can be a big deal) and smaller file (~17 MP) sizes from the camera, which can be of value to. But it is all due to the 45 MP sensor. I'm sure someone already wrote this before this video showed up on my screen (why didn't u-tube notify me right off, I have the bell checked???). Anyway, thanks for showing me how well the 2X works. I was a big 7DM2 shooter as well, but never with the 2X.
Hi Glen. Appreciate the through video. I’ve been considering getting a R5 but have read a lot of people online complaining about the camera freezing up. Has this been your experience with your R5? If the freezing is a real issue, I don’t know if I would be comfortable with it for the fear of the camera freezing up during a rare/special wildlife encounter. Thanks
@@anand-iyer mine freezes up. It amazes me that the screen freezes and I turn it off and still see the frozen screen. I pull the battery and still see the frozen screen! Takes a few seconds after pulling the battery and it will come around. This has happened while shooting a bald eagle's nest. I only shoot stills, have never tried the video on the thing. I've actually had 2 of these cameras and they both do this.

Excellent review! One important aspect of the R5 is the different between machincial vs electronic shutter on flying birds. I think the result coming out from the machincal shutter is still better than the electronic shutter. I just like to know your opinions about this subject.
RUclips lead me to your site from watching your friend from Australia. Can’t recall his name. After watching this video on the R5, I feel like I haven’t watched a video of attended a professorial class. I have some questions for the professor. Have you tried shooting birds handheld? Have you achieved good sharpness with bird photography, even on purchase, handheld? I avoid using a tripod, which is what I’m interested in knowing. I never experienced the focusing capabilities of the 7D Mark too. I came into the 90 D. It has a cropped high megapixel sensor. Have you found the cropping results with the R5 in crop mode similar or better than the cropping results in the 7D? I’m thinking the answer is yes. As an aside, I was looking forward to seeing some images of the pileated woodpecker‘s. I found a pair close to me in the Carolinas. Did you experience any overheating or heat related warnings while shooting the camera in either stills or video? Sorry if this is a simple question, but I have a 1.4 extender Canon for my canon EOS 100 400 mark two EF lens. Will it work on the R5 with the RF adapter and the 100 to 400 lens? Regarding the camera going into blur coming off the subject and not being able to hunt its way back to focus, I do not have one of those big telephoto lens with one of those buttons that will memorize a point in space to return the focus. Some people I’ve seen on RUclips say that they can acquire focus either manually on the lens itself by using the focusing ring or switching over to the old focus method with a memorized button and then switching back to animal eye detect focus. Are either of these things doable if one doesn’t have one of those buttons on one of those lenses? Thank you. I believe that’s all my questions for now. I did like and subscribe to your channel. Are you going to do a video on video features of the R5? I remembered another question. I use Cannon‘s DPP software all the time. Sometimes I’ll export my raw CR3 file to Luminar or affinity photo. Usually when I export these things I export in JPEG. You mentioned a tiff file. If I’m going to export from a raw file to another file to work subsequently on the image, should I be using a tiff file. Could you please explain? Thank you.
To answer your questions: I shoot flight shots handheld. R5 image quality is much better than 7D II or 90D I havent pushed the video enough to ever overheat. Yes any EF lens will work. Yes you'll just have to either use MF or point at ground and get focus then re acquire. Yes you want to use Tif as jpg is compressed and you lose quality.
Great review thank you for sharing your thoughts, I pair the R5 with the 500mm mk 2 and switch is off for anything above 1200 Would be interested to know if you kept is on while on tripod at 1/250 Sec Another thought regarding CR3 and full Raw I know the images look the same with no apparent loss of quality, but I wonder it there is an advantage when it comes to pulling details, would full raw give better dynamic-range ? I always leave IS mode 1 on. Haven't found it to be a problem. To my eye I could not see any difference between RAW and cRAW. I dug around on the internet and it seemed most people could not see a difference.
Thank you so much for your in depth review. I have a couple of questions 1. Is there still a problem with Raw files in LR? 2. Do you still recommend only using an SD Card if not shooting in 8K?
Adobe improved significantly. But I prefer the "PROSETS" that I developed with Jan Wegener. thebirdphotographyshow.com/profiles.htm You can definitely use an SD card. But its nice to have the faster cards. Especially for downloading. Its much quicker!
You should try ON1 Photo Raw to proce3sss your images and ON1 NoNoise for noise removal. - superb colour and a superb noise removal program - better than Topaz IMHO
Very good video Glenn. I have been using the R5 since Nov to shoot 100,000 images so far and I agree completely with you that I can't go back to a camera without eye focus. I did have the trouble too with the autofocus going to the background and then not hunting, but I found if I pointed the camera at the ground right in front of me it focused again. I have only shot RAW and often use the 1.6x crop when needed rather than the teleconverter to get sharper images. You mentioned the smaller Raw file, so I am wondering how well that would work when also using the crop mode. I have not tested it yet, but I will, but it seems you would not want the smaller RAW file when you are shooting in crop mode. Any thoughts on that Glen? Again, I enjoyed your enthusiasm for this camera. I feel like switching from my 1DX Mark III DSLR to the mirrorless is somewhat similar to making the switch from film to digital in 2003. Unless the DSLRs are made to offer what the R5 offers, I don't think any of my DSLRs will get much use.
The cRAW still has the same number of pixels in 1.0 or 1.6 crop mode. But it is a compressed file format. Most users cannot see any difference though so it could be a great way to save space on cards / HD's.
@@GlennBartley Good to know. I just ran the test and file size does not vary much from RAW and CRaw, so a 1.6x crop from a RAW should be the same size as from Craw. I have had no trouble using RAW only though. I used 256GB Sony card and a 128GB card and that works well. I do sometimes run out of batteries quickly though when I am shooting a lot at the Laguna Seca Ranch in Texas, so I have gone to having a total of 6 batteries and 3 chargers and now battery power is a non-issue even for all day heavy shooting.
I have also found that the colors, noise, and sharpness are not near as good in Adobe Camera Raw as in Canon’s DPP software, or the previews in PhotoMechanic. I noticed this problem in files from both my Canon 1DX Mark III and the Canon R5.
This video is incredibly informative and helpful. Thank you for taking the time to put it together. Have you tried converting the CR3 file to Adobe's DNG? Does that improve the LR rendering of the image?

Although I have not tested it, I do hear that the latest update to Adobe Camera RAW has 'fixed' the R5 issues - Adobe allegedly updated for a number of the newer camera models? Others can comment - I have yet to have been lucky enough to get the R5 for myself so will just sit and jealously drool :) Thanks for posting this update.
Which version of the 600mm lens are you using, v:II or v:III? I have the v:II. If you are using the v:III, do you think the v:II will perform differently? Also, the video of you standing behind your camera is reversed/mirrored. How did that happen?
No, that is definitely what is happening with it getting off the bird onto the background. You have to MF to get it back. I think all ML bodies do this. I have been shooting my since August 1. However, you get used to it. Thanks for tip about the ring, which I have never used!!!

nice video glenn but the thing that sticks out to me is your comparing apsc with full frame when it comes to noise and iso rating. I dont think this is a fair test. remember your drawing with light. full frame cameras have a bigger sensor so can capture more light which in turn means lower iso and better noise performance. even if your using the crop mode your limiting the megapixels to 19 but if you was using the 90d for example you would have 32 megapixels not a fair test either. I am fully aware the 7d II is 20 megapixels so I guess the crop mode on the R5 is a farer test. But even in crop mode I suspect the auto focus system on the R5 is still using the more light available on a full frame camera as such focus will be far better than a apsc camera. I don't know if in this video if your always using crop mode or not all the time. if not then your putting a full frame sensor up against a apsc its obvious to me more noise will happen on a apsc simple logic don't you think. As for noise on photoshop that is concerning makes me think ditching photoshop in the future.
@@GlennBartley I have ditched my 90d 80d and soon my 7dII in favour of my R6 and eos R the most under rated mirrorless camera out their basically its a 5D mk4. The only issue I have is the RF lenses. they are well over priced as such I have a mix of EF and RF glass. My recent video is showcasing what I have upgraded too. I just can not justify the RF 100-500 7.1 glass for £2900 its well over my budget it looks nice but for the money I could buy a used 500mm f4 mk1. And still have some cash left over. AS for photoshop I really have a problem upgrading to their subscription model paying every month I use CS6 but will have to ditch it soon as my computer operating system on my mac needs upgrading from mavericks as google chrome will not let me upload videos on youtube any more using my mac. So I wonder is their an alternative which is good to photoshop and lightroom. thanks.
You are using Adobe camera raw ? Why ? Canon designed tbe R5 to be used with Canons DPP for correct raw conversion. I have beed using DPP for raw conversion for >5rs now. DPP is better, colours are better, lens ca correction is better, thus images are sharper.
Good question. I added a little strap just in case my camera ever becomes detached accidentally. That way it wont smash on the ground. Also can be handy when switching teleconverters as the body can just suspend if needed. Very simple DIY solution.
I downloaded a couple of the files to look at them. Why are they all 5088 x 3392. The flower shots where you have a RAW and a CRAW are the same pixel dimensions which is only a little over 17 million pixels? Something doesn't make sense since this is a 45mp sensor.
@@GlennBartley Glenn: The straight RAW file of the flower is not a CRAW. You had both a RAW and a CRAW of that flower and both are the same pixel dimensions that I mentioned. Both are only 17.2 mp. I get it that CRAW is compressed, and the file size is smaller, but the 45mp sensor is 8216 x 5477. So again.... Why are all of the images only 5088 x 3392. I'm not asking about the physical size of the file on disk. It's about the number of pixels.
I don't have the R5, but I looked at my 5D-IV. Setting it to MRAW produces files that are 5040 x 3360. The 5D IV doesn't have compressed raw, but smaller RAW file sizes (MRAW and SRAW) . If you have the same thing on the R5 that explains the smaller pixel dimensions, but it also invalidates all testing for noise performance.
It ain't you Glenn. Every other user of the R5 has complained about the AF losing the subject occasionally and not being able to reacquire AT ALL. And yes you have to manually focus or focus on the ground or something to get back into the game. Canon needs to look at this seriously. It's almost (almost) enough to keep me from getting the R5 or R6 (both of them do this). I'm still sitting on the fence.
Hey Glen, great video! Just working my way through it. Do you feel that a Ef 500mm f4L IS version 1 lens would be sharp enough with the R5? And, any thoughts on the new R7 rumored body in relation to the R5? Thanks! Gary
I'm sure that glass will perform great. I haven't heard anything at all concrete on an R7. Maybe in 2022? But I think we'll see an R1 first personally.
Hi, I have a 500mm is version 1 too, I have heard that the continuous shoot rate drops to 5/6 fps in mechanical shutter with R5 and this lens(although stays the same as marketed with electronic shutter, Strange) please confirm if that's true if you have tried it on.
I have a V1 500mm lens. The (mechanical) shutter rate does indeed drop to around 6 or 7 fps. The autofocus area is reduced to about 80 percent of the total area as well. My photos are still sharp and I can put up with these limitations. I just can't afford to spend thousands of dollars "per pound" for the benefits of the newer lenses :) I did a lot of moonlighting to afford this one years ago.

This has been super helpful - thanks so much. I couldn't work out why the noise was so bad in lightroom when the ISO on the R5 was way under 32000. I have the Canon DPP software now which operates like a government program unfortunately, but worth it. This vid was succinct and had no rambling, no gaps and long pauses with information that was irrelevant and boring - great info. I also appreciated the testing at around 9:30. I can't stand it when people don't replicate the environment that you are actually using a high ISO in. Great comparisons and definitely worth subscribing.

Great video Glenn! I really liked how you talked about all aspects of the camera and not just focus on the eye detect autofocus, which is what a lot of videos seem to concentrate on. That's great, but there's a lot more to the camera than just that. I'm looking at getting one this fall. I currently shoot with a 5DSr, so the resolution will be similar for me. Your bufflehead pictures are amazing. I hope to get some practice with those when they get back down into the Olympia area this fall. What a lot of people may not appreciate is that they fly super fast over the water, so tracking them and getting them and focus the way you did is no small feat. It's a credit to both your technique and the camera's autofocusing system put together. Your recent swallow photos were awesome as well! Thanks for the great review from a bird photographers perspective.

I totally agree with you on everything you said in this video. You are the only reviewer I totally agree with. We are exactly on the same page. Awesome real world review. I do use the ring on the big prime to pre-set the focus. Yup, once you lose the focus, it is hard to bump it back. That pre-focus ring is a great workaround.

Great review. I completely agree with all of your findings after I have used to R5 for more than a half year. I used to shoot with 7D mk ii and 1DX mk ii but I have sold the 7D mk ii and I am trying to sell the 1DX mk ii as well. My wife has replaced her 80D with a R5 as well and we recently bought a R6 as secondary body (often long lens on R5, shorter zoom on secondar body) as it is very similar to the R5. The R5 / R6 are not as rugged as the 7D mk ii and the 1DX mk ii though but that is rarely important. Hint for good lazy low shots of frogs in the water: Set C1 up with shutter button focus and animal eye detect; hold the lens just above the water with the left hand on the tripod foot and point on the frog with the right hand on the camera and the finger on the trigger; let the IS and animal eye focus do its magic and get the shot.

Currently shooting with a Sony A7Riii, and thinking of getting(switching to?) a Canon R5. From test images I've downloaded, they seem really similar in terms of iso performance, and I can say I've printed wildlife shots at iso 12800 up to 17"x11" and been very happy with the print.
Yes I imagine they are pretty similar. Always hard to switch brands. Especially if you have a fair bit tied up in glass.
@@GlennBartley Thankfully, I don't have a ton of glass yet. I was considering going all out on a Sony A1 and the 100-400 GM lens, but saw some reviews indicating that the Canon R5 holds its own against the Sony in autofocus, has similar resolution(45 vs 50), plenty of burst speed(20 vs 30), and costs a LOT less. In fact, the R5 and the 100-500 L lens combined cost about the same as just the Sony body. I might lose a little selling my other lenses and buying equivalents, but I spend SO much time at the long end, I'm not worried about that.

Glenn- if it's been covered then dis regard. I have mine setup with triple back button AF and one of those is the single point. When the eye tracking goes beyond i hit the single point on the branch or rock and it comes back and then you are good to go with eye detect again. Works pretty fast once you get used to it.

That is also how I set up my camera.
But that is not the issue I describe. What I am talking about has to do with the way the AF works on mirrorless cameras.
I went out one day to a 5-hour birding even with the grip on my r5 and came home with 9000+ shots on the same set of batteries. I changed them out before the camera got out of H+ Green, so it never got about the 12 fps. That means those batteries still had ~50% charge (H+ Green will sometimes keep working to around ~45% charge).

Thanks for this informative video.I have had my R5 for just a couple of weeks and also came from using a 7D MKII with which I was never wildly impressed with and never really liked shooting over 800 iso.
The R5 is stunning by comparison with my Sigma 500 f4 sport, not so much with the extenders but is pretty good with the 1.4x
Once I had customised the settings for double BBF I pretty much got the hang of it in a couple of days.
I have only ever used Canon dpp since my first dslr the Canon 10D.

Thank you! An insightful video. I owned a R5 for a couple of weeks and ended up returning it, due to the frustration of the focus problem you mention where the camera was not able to find an out of focus bird at relatively close range.....(if it did focus, tended to focus on the background). Didn’t test the R5 thoroughly enough to see some of the advantages you did. Liked the idea of you mentioned of using the pre-focus setting and turning that thin ring slightly to have the focus reset to the prefocus point.
At the time I received my R5, there was no full time manual focus override (when in the AF mode, the manual focus ring would remain disengaged until the R5 focused on something…..only after that happened would the manual focusing ring work…..or I could mechanically switch the focus slider on the lens to MF). That was very frustrating because the override was not available when the camera was locked up, the AF not able to focus on anything (which happened frequently)
Months after returning my camera I saw that Canon issued a software update on the R5 that allowed full time manual focus override with “certain lenses”. If the long lens shwon in your video was an EF lens (I have a EF 600mm f/4 IS II) do you now have full time manual focus override (meaning you can manually focus the lens at any time while in AF mode at any time by simply turning the focusing ring)? Curious. This would be a big plus.

You're spot-on with Adobe and Canon. I pay both a lot of money, it is time to demand the both do better. Dollars talk and this needs to end. There are those Color Fidelity profiles for Lightroom. This is a great review, Glenn. It was very interesting to get your impressions and see your results. When it comes to the focus issue, there is an R5 menu setting that tells the camera to give up trying to focus if it is initially unsuccessful in finding it. I'm curious if you have that enabled or disabled. Also, can't you just go to your other back focus button to reactivate focus?
I noticed you were referring the CFexpress cards that the R5 uses as CFast cards. I'm sure you just misspoke but for anyone else viewing this, understand that these are different card types. CFexpress cards are faster and overall superior. They are the future. If anyone already owns any fast UHS-II V90 class SDXC cards, it's good advice to utilize those if you can. However, at least in the US, the price difference between UHS-II V90 class SDXC cards and CFexpress cards can be less than $100. Buying a new high-end SDXC card will offer backwards compatibility with older cameras but CFexpress is the future. If you don't need backwards compatibility, the smarter play might be to buy CFexpress.

You can certainly use back button to try to re-focus. But if the focus has slipped to the background you need to point it at a new target to get it to start hunting for closer objects again. Even if you are technically perfectly aligned with your subject and focus has gone to the BG it will simply not start looking again.
So for example you could aim the camera at the ground or a tree that is near the bird and then re-frame and try to focus again. It is quite a pain. No settings on the camera will help. You have basically 3 options. Recompose as I just described. Manually refocus. Use the focus ring as I describe in the video.

Good all round and honest review Glenn & I concur with most points made after using my R5 for 7Mths. Glad to hear you make mention also of the less then satisfactory CR3 file support from Adobe. Capture One handles the CR3's reasonably well (yes, at additional cost) but does a much better job than Adobe (at the time of this note) ...and as you say & would expect, Canon DDP handles the CR3 files well but is a bit of a pain to use if you have to learn it from scratch.

So this is a really comprehensive review it is the third time l have watched in full. I don't mind having to manually pull focus back, l always manually prefocus then hit eye focus or one of the other 2 focus set ups l have. No it is not perfect as you say but with 3 back button set ups you can rarely go wrong. I have single point set up then eye and face tracking for animals then a third button set to single point with subject tracking with eye and face. Used in combination you can rarely miss. As good as the ISO is supposed to be on my R6 l keep it at max 6400 and in Lightroom still not happy with how often have to go to noise reduction. With the R6 only having 20mp l cannot use aps c mode so max out at 840mm with a 1.4 converter. I only use CRAW it makes the 20mp files so small and fast. These cameras are getting so good l think our expectations get higher but as you said once you tried it there no going back.

Excellent review! I understand that the 1.6 crop mode may make it easier for the photographer to get the AF point on the eye since the bird will appear larger in the viewfinder. But since the camera’s AF works entirely off of the sensor and going into crop mode has no effect on what the sensor sees, I don’t see how it could affect the camera’s AF or eye detect performance.
It sure seemed to when I was on that pileated woodpecker. Not sure. Maybe not distracted by the area not included in the image?? I know what you mean. But in the field that's how it seemed to me.
@@GlennBartley I thought the same thing Glen that putting it in crop mode helped the camera find the eye better. Not sure about that though. As a test, I put up a bird image on my computer and then used the camera to see how quickly it found the bird's eye on the computer when the image was big in the viewfinder and when it was small - even tiny - and the speed of focus acquisition seems the same.
Agree that DPP is clunky, but it is native software for Canon. It supports all of the EF and RF lenses as well as the TC.
I have been using it for quite some time and am happy with it.

You got my subscription and like when you admitted that Adobe is not the only game in town. I did not realize DPP was so terrible. I use it all the time. It may be better for people like me who do not process thousand image batches all at the same 'presets' but you can cut and paste recipes to similar images. I do this to prepare a group for Depth Compositing but it would work for a wedding bunch, I guess. I use DPP to make a TIF (16 bit) and finish it off using Topaz, Affinity (just learning this) and an old version of Photoshop Elements as needed. There is always more than one way to do anything.
Definitely many ways to get there in the end. I agree!
All R5/R6 and other mirrorless cameras, including my R6, have the eye detect problem with a busy background, so I use the dual back-button focus technique, as a work around as I do not have the luxury of big bucks for long primes.

Excellent in depth review. Re eye detection, I set the star button to switch that on. So initially normal focus, then press star with my thumb and it goes to eye detection. I also set that button for video animal detect and it goes straight to the bird eye. I also noticed the Adobe awful noise in canon raw files comparing to DPP, its absolutely terrible. I open the files in DPP first for a quick sort to see the quality before going to lightroom and wouldn't trust Adobe for my decisions on keepers to be honest, I always check in DPP before deciding. It's strange
Yes its crazy how different the file handling is. With good settings Adobe is still very usable up to ISO 3200 IMO. But after that you really need to use DPP to process the RAW files.

I have the camera since it came out and everything you have referred to I have experienced except, I haven’t tried the 2x converter with the 500 F4 II I have and I haven’t looked closely at the high iso difference between Camera Raw and Canon DPP. I did notice that Camera Raw did not seem to do as good a job on the raw files. When I looked back the EOS R raw files they looked fantastic by comparison. So, I would agree that there is something seriously going on there.

Your vlogs are always good value Glenn. I believe the issue you describe at 6.45 mins has afflicted others, like Duade Patton on his R6. I'm hoping it will be correctible with a firmware upgrade.
I think unfortunately its an issue with the way mirrorless handles AF through phase detect. Probably something we'll just have to live with.

Nice review, I've been shooting with the R6 for a few months now and yes even it is a fantastic camera for wildlife photographers. Since it's a 20 megapixel sensor the 1.6 crop doesn't work quite as well as on the R5. I'll have to try the 2x TC as I also never used it on the 7D MK II.

It was great to download your photos and and to be able to zoom in and try deNoise on the high ISO ones. I couldn't see any difference in the compressed one either. I would like to replace my 5D3 (landscape) & 7D2 (wildlife) with just one camera, so I was particularly interested in the positives for wildlife. I was pleased to see that you were using EF lenses as we have 6 we share and I didn't want to have to replace them all

I thoroughly enjoyed your review of the R5. I have switched to a complete Sony system (a9ii, a1 , 600mm f4 and 200-600mm with teleconverters) but find that these camera systems have much in common. Your analysis in low light and using crop mode is also valid for the Sony a1. Like you said, after using these top mirrorless cameras it’s impossible to go back!

Regarding the autofocus hunting, I have enabled touch and drag AF and put the active touch area to the top right so even looking into the VF, I can easily use my right thumb and move the point to wherever I want the camere to focus. Not sure if using teleconverter will reduce the focus area but you can give it a try.

Great review, it's nice to see some local birds featured (and local conditions, I'm in Metchosin) I've had the R5 since last July and it replaced my 7D. It's a superb piece of gear. I've added the 800mm F11,so ISOs like 3200 are the norm, I agree with you regarding the Adobe Raw noise, it sucks, but DPP is soooo clunky to use! Topaz really helps but I wish Adobe and Canon would figure things out!

First off, to answer your question, @ 4:45, heck yes ! And if were not quite as sharp and clean as you wanted it, it wouldn't be anything that Topaz couldn't fix :) I've worked with a lot of shots that were not near as good, and still made them useable :) Can't wait for my R5 to get here in a few days :) Also, I was so glad to here you talk about the better than expected battery life... I also have a Canon battery grip coming, and 2000+ shot battery life is totally okay by me. Especially since I have 6 extra batteries laying around as well :)

Hi Glenn, another great review and thanks for the R5 set up guide I have bought your guides for the DX2 and DX3 in the past and have been great, I use the manual focus override when the camera gets stuck on the background, one thing I would like to add and maybe you could look into this after a lot of reading I found the reason photos look better in DPP is that DPP automatically adds noise reduction, where as Lightroom doesn't, the workflow on DPP is terrible as you said.
Also and this is my personal opinion for fast action wildlife I still prefer my DX3 on my 600mm Mk2 I think the big lens just focuses quicker, maybe something to do with the larger battery I don't know.

My issue with ACR is that even if I went into the noise / details settings and played around I couldn't get the files anywhere near as good as DPP. But I think I have a solution. Stay tuned for a new video this week!

I really wanted the ability to shoot in 1.6x crop mode and still have adequate MP.
For me a full frame body needs to be at least 40MP.

Wow! Haven't tried mine with the 2X, but I will now! By the way, the crop mode is just a crop in for the VF, which makes it easier to see. It has zero impact on the photo other than to crop out some of the image. I'm just saying that because it yields no extra reach for the r5, beyond what you see in the EVF (which, can be a big deal) and smaller file (~17 MP) sizes from the camera, which can be of value to. But it is all due to the 45 MP sensor. I'm sure someone already wrote this before this video showed up on my screen (why didn't u-tube notify me right off, I have the bell checked???). Anyway, thanks for showing me how well the 2X works. I was a big 7DM2 shooter as well, but never with the 2X.
Yes I agree. It just makes it easier to compose and more enjoyable to see the bird larger in the frame.
Hi Glen. Appreciate the through video. I’ve been considering getting a R5 but have read a lot of people online complaining about the camera freezing up. Has this been your experience with your R5? If the freezing is a real issue, I don’t know if I would be comfortable with it for the fear of the camera freezing up during a rare/special wildlife encounter.

Mine has never once "froze up". Maybe if you are doing a tone of 4K video? But for stills I've never had an issue.

Takes a few seconds after pulling the battery and it will come around. This has happened while shooting a bald eagle's nest. I only shoot stills, have never tried the video on the thing. I've actually had 2 of these cameras and they both do this.

Excellent review! One important aspect of the R5 is the different between machincial vs electronic shutter on flying birds. I think the result coming out from the machincal shutter is still better than the electronic shutter. I just like to know your opinions about this subject.
TBH I haven't done much flight shooting. I cant comment on a difference other than its nice to have the 20 FPS when needed.

After watching this video on the R5, I feel like I haven’t watched a video of attended a professorial class. I have some questions for the professor.
Have you tried shooting birds handheld? Have you achieved good sharpness with bird photography, even on purchase, handheld? I avoid using a tripod, which is what I’m interested in knowing.
I never experienced the focusing capabilities of the 7D Mark too. I came into the 90 D. It has a cropped high megapixel sensor. Have you found the cropping results with the R5 in crop mode similar or better than the cropping results in the 7D? I’m thinking the answer is yes.
As an aside, I was looking forward to seeing some images of the pileated woodpecker‘s. I found a pair close to me in the Carolinas.
Did you experience any overheating or heat related warnings while shooting the camera in either stills or video?
Sorry if this is a simple question, but I have a 1.4 extender Canon for my canon EOS 100 400 mark two EF lens. Will it work on the R5 with the RF adapter and the 100 to 400 lens?
Regarding the camera going into blur coming off the subject and not being able to hunt its way back to focus, I do not have one of those big telephoto lens with one of those buttons that will memorize a point in space to return the focus. Some people I’ve seen on RUclips say that they can acquire focus either manually on the lens itself by using the focusing ring or switching over to the old focus method with a memorized button and then switching back to animal eye detect focus. Are either of these things doable if one doesn’t have one of those buttons on one of those lenses?

I remembered another question. I use Cannon‘s DPP software all the time. Sometimes I’ll export my raw CR3 file to Luminar or affinity photo. Usually when I export these things I export in JPEG. You mentioned a tiff file. If I’m going to export from a raw file to another file to work subsequently on the image, should I be using a tiff file. Could you please explain? Thank you.

Yes any EF lens will work.
Yes you'll just have to either use MF or point at ground and get focus then re acquire.

I always leave IS mode 1 on. Haven't found it to be a problem.
To my eye I could not see any difference between RAW and cRAW. I dug around on the internet and it seemed most people could not see a difference.

You can definitely use an SD card. But its nice to have the faster cards. Especially for downloading. Its much quicker!

You should try ON1 Photo Raw to proce3sss your images and ON1 NoNoise for noise removal. - superb colour and a superb noise removal program - better than Topaz IMHO

Very good video Glenn. I have been using the R5 since Nov to shoot 100,000 images so far and I agree completely with you that I can't go back to a camera without eye focus. I did have the trouble too with the autofocus going to the background and then not hunting, but I found if I pointed the camera at the ground right in front of me it focused again. I have only shot RAW and often use the 1.6x crop when needed rather than the teleconverter to get sharper images. You mentioned the smaller Raw file, so I am wondering how well that would work when also using the crop mode. I have not tested it yet, but I will, but it seems you would not want the smaller RAW file when you are shooting in crop mode. Any thoughts on that Glen? Again, I enjoyed your enthusiasm for this camera. I feel like switching from my 1DX Mark III DSLR to the mirrorless is somewhat similar to making the switch from film to digital in 2003. Unless the DSLRs are made to offer what the R5 offers, I don't think any of my DSLRs will get much use.
The cRAW still has the same number of pixels in 1.0 or 1.6 crop mode. But it is a compressed file format. Most users cannot see any difference though so it could be a great way to save space on cards / HD's.
@@GlennBartley Good to know. I just ran the test and file size does not vary much from RAW and CRaw, so a 1.6x crop from a RAW should be the same size as from Craw. I have had no trouble using RAW only though. I used 256GB Sony card and a 128GB card and that works well. I do sometimes run out of batteries quickly though when I am shooting a lot at the Laguna Seca Ranch in Texas, so I have gone to having a total of 6 batteries and 3 chargers and now battery power is a non-issue even for all day heavy shooting.
I have also found that the colors, noise, and sharpness are not near as good in Adobe Camera Raw as in Canon’s DPP software, or the previews in PhotoMechanic. I noticed this problem in files from both my Canon 1DX Mark III and the Canon R5.
Yes it is a problem. Hopefully Adobe gets back on their game!

Although I have not tested it, I do hear that the latest update to Adobe Camera RAW has 'fixed' the R5 issues - Adobe allegedly updated for a number of the newer camera models? Others can comment - I have yet to have been lucky enough to get the R5 for myself so will just sit and jealously drool :) Thanks for posting this update.
Unless it was in the past week or so I dont think they have solved anything yet. Fingers crossed they do though moving forwards!
Which version of the 600mm lens are you using, v:II or v:III? I have the v:II. If you are using the v:III, do you think the v:II will perform differently? Also, the video of you standing behind your camera is reversed/mirrored. How did that happen?
I have the vII. Works great! Only advantage of VIII is weight savings.

No, that is definitely what is happening with it getting off the bird onto the background. You have to MF to get it back. I think all ML bodies do this. I have been shooting my since August 1. However, you get used to it. Thanks for tip about the ring, which I have never used!!!
Yes it has something to do with the way mirrorless cameras autofocus. I think they all do it. Kind of annoying!

I find with my rp the fastest way to get rid of the locked up auto focus is to flick the camera on and off switch off and back on .
With the shut down and start up time of the R5 that sounds much slower than manually focusing back on to the target to me.

Yes, you are right
nice video glenn but the thing that sticks out to me is your comparing apsc with full frame when it comes to noise and iso rating. I dont think this is a fair test. remember your drawing with light. full frame cameras have a bigger sensor so can capture more light which in turn means lower iso and better noise performance. even if your using the crop mode your limiting the megapixels to 19 but if you was using the 90d for example you would have 32 megapixels not a fair test either.
I am fully aware the 7d II is 20 megapixels so I guess the crop mode on the R5 is a farer test. But even in crop mode I suspect the auto focus system on the R5 is still using the more light available on a full frame camera as such focus will be far better than a apsc camera. I don't know if in this video if your always using crop mode or not all the time. if not then your putting a full frame sensor up against a apsc its obvious to me more noise will happen on a apsc simple logic don't you think.
As for noise on photoshop that is concerning makes me think ditching photoshop in the future.
Any way you slice it the R5 destroys the 7D II or 90D for noise.
And with new software like DXO and Topaz the results are simply amazing.
@@GlennBartley I have ditched my 90d 80d and soon my 7dII in favour of my R6 and eos R the most under rated mirrorless camera out their basically its a 5D mk4. The only issue I have is the RF lenses. they are well over priced as such I have a mix of EF and RF glass. My recent video is showcasing what I have upgraded too. I just can not justify the RF 100-500 7.1 glass for £2900 its well over my budget it looks nice but for the money I could buy a used 500mm f4 mk1. And still have some cash left over. AS for photoshop I really have a problem upgrading to their subscription model paying every month I use CS6 but will have to ditch it soon as my computer operating system on my mac needs upgrading from mavericks as google chrome will not let me upload videos on youtube any more using my mac. So I wonder is their an alternative which is good to photoshop and lightroom. thanks.

You are using Adobe camera raw ? Why ? Canon designed tbe R5 to be used with Canons DPP for correct raw conversion.
I have beed using DPP for raw conversion for >5rs now. DPP is better, colours are better, lens ca correction is better, thus images are sharper.
I agree with you that dpp does a better job on the raw files. 100%
But using that horrible clunky software makes me want to smash my computer!

Good question. I added a little strap just in case my camera ever becomes detached accidentally. That way it wont smash on the ground. Also can be handy when switching teleconverters as the body can just suspend if needed. Very simple DIY solution.

I downloaded a couple of the files to look at them. Why are they all 5088 x 3392. The flower shots where you have a RAW and a CRAW are the same pixel dimensions which is only a little over 17 million pixels? Something doesn't make sense since this is a 45mp sensor.
cRAW is a compressed RAW format. same pixel dimensions. Lower size. That's the whole point ;-)
@@GlennBartley Glenn: The straight RAW file of the flower is not a CRAW. You had both a RAW and a CRAW of that flower and both are the same pixel dimensions that I mentioned. Both are only 17.2 mp. I get it that CRAW is compressed, and the file size is smaller, but the 45mp sensor is 8216 x 5477. So again.... Why are all of the images only 5088 x 3392. I'm not asking about the physical size of the file on disk. It's about the number of pixels.
I don't have the R5, but I looked at my 5D-IV. Setting it to MRAW produces files that are 5040 x 3360. The 5D IV doesn't have compressed raw, but smaller RAW file sizes (MRAW and SRAW) . If you have the same thing on the R5 that explains the smaller pixel dimensions, but it also invalidates all testing for noise performance.

It ain't you Glenn. Every other user of the R5 has complained about the AF losing the subject occasionally and not being able to reacquire AT ALL. And yes you have to manually focus or focus on the ground or something to get back into the game. Canon needs to look at this seriously. It's almost (almost) enough to keep me from getting the R5 or R6 (both of them do this). I'm still sitting on the fence.
Unfortunately I think it is ALL of the mirrorless cameras across platforms. Just one chink in the armor it seems ;-)

I'm sure that glass will perform great. I haven't heard anything at all concrete on an R7. Maybe in 2022? But I think we'll see an R1 first personally.

Hi, I have a 500mm is version 1 too, I have heard that the continuous shoot rate drops to 5/6 fps in mechanical shutter with R5 and this lens(although stays the same as marketed with electronic shutter, Strange) please confirm if that's true if you have tried it on.
I have a V1 500mm lens. The (mechanical) shutter rate does indeed drop to around 6 or 7 fps. The autofocus area is reduced to about 80 percent of the total area as well. My photos are still sharp and I can put up with these limitations. I just can't afford to spend thousands of dollars "per pound" for the benefits of the newer lenses :) I did a lot of moonlighting to afford this one years ago.
