I guess it depends on your needs, but I never understood the “photography backpack” concept. Backpacks are good for transporting stuff, but a) you can’t access your camera and lenses while they’re in the backpack, and b) it’s all on your back, making it potentially less secure.
Some backpacks mitigate the first issue with either side access (that I’ve tried and find to be an ergonomic disaster, plus theft is even more of an issue), or a back panel which you can access by rotating around your body (which is better, but still not very fast).
I’ve used a Think Tank Change Up v2 which can be worn on the front. Meaning my camera and lenses are readily available, and actually the bag itself can serve as a platform for my arms to rest on while holding the camera to my eye, increasing stability in low light situations. Plus theft is much less of an issue.
One downside? It makes me look like I’m pregnant. And I’m a guy. Also things like tying up shoe laces is a bit more difficult.
But, I’m now considering a more modular approach like the Think Tank belt system. Some components of which (like the Digital Holster) can also be worn on the front, attached to backpack straps for example, which is great for hiking.
Anyway, my camera bag qualifies as a personal item. And my backpack fits in the overhead compartment.
