I've been a Chief's fan since 1966 and while I love the current team, this is the bunch that will always have my heart! Canton, Ohio and the HoF is full of them! Lenny Dawson, Willie Lanier, Bobby Bell, Buck Buchanan, Curly Culp, Johnny Robinson, Emmett Thomas, Jan Stenerud, and Coach Stram have received their recognition, and if there is to ever be any any justice, #89 Otis Taylor will soon join his teammates!!
I'm like you. I loved the 90's Cowboys, but the team of my youth with Landry, Staubach and Lilly will always be my favorites. I loved Otis, too, but he just didn't pile up the stats you need to make the HOF. Three Pro Bowls and 410 catches just isn't enough. I feel for you though. Peace
Unfortunately Lenny Dawson's last year is when I became a fan I think it was 75. I remember bill Kenny and I thought he was pretty good. Blackledge never played hardly as I recall but seems like that was the mid eighties. I remember never making the playoffs but a couple of times in the 80s. Joe dehlaney was a big big loss. Demon cherry got 4 picks 1 game in the late eighties thar was a big moment.the defensive teams of the 90s was great just no qb to take us to the promise land. Montana was too old and broken to get us there. After he got knocked out of the afc championship game against Buffalo he was finished. Close but no cigar. If Gannon would have played against Denver in the 14-10 playoff loss instead of grebak that was our year! The end of the great defense that year. This is a great time to be a chiefs fan for sure glad I lived to see it. Just wished dad was here to share this.
I am LOVING your content from the 70's! I was eight when this game was played. I stayed up with my dad to watch the first half of MNF in those days even though mom wanted me in bed by nine. Glad dad overruled her on Mondays during football season. Howard, Dandy Don and Frank were priceless TV! The commercials were FANTASTIC back in the day! The 70's were so freaking cool!
Municipal Stadium last game was the 1971 Christmas Day playoff game between the Chiefs and Dolphins--it turned out to be the longest game in NFL history
And the last playoff game for KC in 15 years...would have to wait 20 years for a playoff win at Arrowhead, 22 years to reach an AFC title game, 47 years to host a title game, and 48 years to reach the Super Bowl...and now the good old days are here
Not only that it nice to see the QB under centre and it was about the players on the field, not some AC or DC pulling the strings in the background. I wish they’d let the QB’s call the plays.
Otis Taylor was ahead of his time in that he was a tall receiver and a big target, much like the receivers we've seen recently. Harold Carmichael, too.

I AGREE with the first two comments, I was a KC CHIEFS fan as far back as 1970. However, my ALL TIME FAVORITE game, even though it was in a losing cause, KC vs Miami. I was a young 13 yr old and it was the first round of the playoffs, Saturday, Christmas day 1971. From start to finish BOTH teams were very COMPETITIVE, there were NO dull moments, KC'S Ed Podolack put on a show setting an NFL record for a running back, yards rushing, passes caught and punt returns etc..The game would go into two OT'S and Miami would come away with a victory. That was a long game and I ENJOYED every bit of it. Looking back on those early years of MNF, I loved the theme music used by ABC and the cast, Howard Cosell, Don Meredith, and Frank Gifford, they were a class act !...RIP. I watch this video from time to time in order to remember and take in how enjoyable that era of Kansas City Chiefs football was for me. As I hear the broadcasters in their pregame preamble, I attentively listen to the introductions in the background, and each time I listen, I get a sense of warmth and even pride that I am still a big fan of the Kansas City Chiefs. Hearing the names Ed Budde, Jim Tyrer, Len Dawson and Otis Taylor announced, I feel like I'm there. Just hearing the Public Address Announcer's voice takes me right back to Municipal Stadium and the unforgettable days of my youth at Chiefs games. I thank God above for being gifted such a wonderful experience in my life and if I'm fortunate enough to welcomed into Heaven, it's my hope that the good Lord will let me go back and re-live some of those days again. LONG LIVE THE AFL!!!
Pre-season as the Jets are not wearing their typical jerseys, and Frank Gifford makes reference to the next "cut". It was tough for me being 8 years old in 1968. After Super Bowl III, I kept thinking the Jets would get their act together for a repeat performance. Still, great to see the guys!!!
I believe this pre-season game was played on Aug 30, 1971. The actual season did not start till Sept 19th that year. The Jets would up a disappointing 6-8, and the Chiefs season would infamously end with the longest game in NFL history against the Miami Dolphins in 27-24 loss. Miami would lose the Super Bowl to Dallas 24-3 that year. However, 12 months later the Dolphins would open their historical 1972 season at the brand new Arrowhead Stadium.
yep i seen the longest game seen that super bowl chiefs should have been in it but they would have to beat the colts to get there the week after the longest game miami went on to beat the colts then lose to the cowboys lol funny i even remember watching that preseason game with miami in arrowhead i could be wrong but i believe it was miami 20 chiefs 10 ya im an old chiefs fan the things i remember from those days
Hall of fame members in this game. Kansas City Chiefs: Hank Stram, Len Dawson, Lamar Hunt, Curly Culp, Willie Lanier, Bobby Bell, Buck Buchanan, Emmett Thomas, Jan Stenurud, and new member Johnny Robinson. New York Jets: Weeb Ewbank, Joe Namath, Don Maynard, John Riggens.
That was normal back then. In those days, players were not with their teams year-round as many actually worked off-season jobs as the money was NOT EVEN CLOSE to what it is now, even adjusted for inflation. They used the pre-season to actually play themselves into shape. MUCH different now with the level of off-season programs and so forth.
This was just week 4 of 6 weeks of pre-season games prior to a 14-game regular season, with 40-man rosters. In the 1950s it was even more ridiculous, with teams playing 6 (and in a few cases, 7) pre-season games prior to a 12-game regular season, with rosters of about 33-38 players.
Also Joseph you see there are no stands in what is the outfield that are normally there for a Chief game , because the Royals played the Yankees the day before. I believe the added seats added another 2500 or so seats. Awesome stadium!!!
This had to be pre-season. At that time, the Chiefs shared Municipal Stadium with the Kansas City Royals. The infield dirt is still there. Whenever a football team had to share a stadium with a baseball team, the home team usually waited until baseball season was over, then they'd set up their "permanent" football configuration. In this case, the Chiefs had temporary seating set up in left field. It isn't there, so this had to be August.
44:26 Len Dawson, the future co-host of HBO’s “Inside the NFL”. By 1980, former Miami Dolphins linebacker Nick Buoniconti would be Len’s co-host/analyst. Some nine years later, Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver (now currently with NBC Sports) Cris Collinsworth would be its third co-host.
At 13 yrs old I made the Chiefs my first team. At that time I had no knowledge of their long successful AFL history or their 1969 Superbowl win. The Chiefs dynasty ended the this very year. I learned early not to invest my loyalty to any one franchise. Chiefs look good this year though.
@@Chiefsfansince-qb1kt Bills choked more than once this season. The Chiefs are back in the SB vs. the Eagles, and my money is on Mahomes and the Chiefs winning the title this season. Even on 1 good ankle, Mahomes had a great game vs. the Bengals, and I believe he's destined to win the MVP and the SB this year.
Keith Jackson was the play-by-play man in the inaugural 1970 season. This might have been Gifford's first broadcast with the MNF crew and it shows because he's making mistakes right and left. Thus the beginning of Cosell's sarcastic ribbing of "Faultless Frank".
51:37 Howard says they know Riggins in this part of the country, Living in the DC metro area they know Riggins very well there also, John Riggins is a legend in the DMV. I mean "The Diesel" is it.
This was, of course, before Riggins played for the Redskins. They knew him in Kansas City because he broke all of Gale Sayers' records when he played at Kansas.
Kunty Kunto I grew up in Lawrence, Kansas (Born in ‘68) & Riggins was around all the time. My friend’s stepdad played ball with him at KU & he took us to an alumni game one time (probably around ‘80 or ‘81). We got to hang around on the sidelines & Riggins was drunk off his ass, with a big pile of beer cans next to him. He picked my little brother up by the head & started shaking him, saying, “Are you gonna play the 2nd half? Are you gonna play the 2nd half??” He was totally bombed🤣🤣 It was crazy. I also went to high school with Chargers QB, John Hadl’s, son & Danny Manning took our high school to the state championship in ‘85. A few years later he was winning a National Championship with Kansas as a part of Danny & the Miracles. One more famous Lawrence High alumnus was Erin Brockovich. I never met her though🤣
This is a telecast of a Monday night NFL football game. Football at night was fun. It was broadcast on the American Broadcasting Network (ABC). ABC is one of the big four over-the-air national TV networks. At the time of this broadcast the Fox network did not exist. This game was called by three broadcasters, former NY Giants star, Frank Gifford, former Dallas Cowboys quarterback, Don Meredith, and attorney and entertainer Howard Cosell.
As a kid I watched these games in the early 1970s. This brings back such great memories. Why doesn't MNF use that opening music and videos? Bring it back. Such greatness.
This was a preseason game. It was obvious by the fact there was still daylight at the very beginning of the telecast. Namath's injury against the Lions occurred on August 7, 1971. The Jets in those days I believe played ALL of their preseason games on the road because the Mets woul not let them use Shea Stadium out of concerns the grass field would be torn up (grass fields were relative to today very poorly maintained back then).
That original introductory theme music for ABC’s Monday Night Football from 1970 through 1975 was , is and always will be, in my most biased and extremely subjectively opinion, the best opening intro for pro football on TV. I believe that it was / is called “Score”.
Probably preseason. The first regular season game I ever went to was at Shea when KC was in town 1971. I had just discovered football and loved it. My father, an ardent Jets' fan saw an opportunity to get out of the house and got tickets. I never became a Jets fan but I recall them winning 16-13. Could be wrong.
Best ad ever: At Baker Bowl in Philadelphia, they had a huge billboard for a soap ad. A fan sneaked in and defaced it. It then read, "The Phillies Use Lifebuoy...BUT THEY STILL STINK !!!"
Thanks for the upload. Love these games. I was lucky to grow up during the 60's and 70's. I watched the Chiefs practice at William Jewel College. Hate the new NFL. Stopped watching completely when they started saying Brady was the best ever. He could never last a complete game in this era.
and the story goes that after losing SB3 to the Jets then Baltimore coach Don Shula and QB Johnny Unitas "cast a curse" on the Jets so they would never be in the Super Bowl again-54 years later that curse continues
during that time you either loved Mr. Cosell or you hated him-many people would watch the game on TV but turn off the audio and get the play by play from Westwood 1's broadcast of the game (I believe Jack Buck announced the games then)
I wish someone would post any and all (I think there were three) of the ABC pre-season telecasts from 1974, with Fred Williamson a part of the broadcast crew, replacing Don Meredith, who had jumped to NBC. Howard Cosell, in his then-current book "Like it Is," devoted a whole chapter to the prospect of Williamson joining the crew, predicting, "the kid is going to make it." The prediction proved to be incorrect, as Williamson was so bad that he was let go prior to the first regular season MNF game, and was replaced by Alex Karras for the next three years. Of course, Howard made no mention of his incorrect prediction when he briefly criticized the hiring of Williamson in his book "I Never Played the Game" (1985).
The ABC Pre-Season telecasts from 1974 were: The Hall of Fame Game between Buffalo v St Louis Detroit at Kansas City August 5 Minnesota at Miami August 19 Oakland at San Francisco September 2 Pittsburgh at Dallas September 6
The Chiefs groundskeeper at Municipal Stadium-George Toma (The "God of Sod")--would normally have painted the helmet logos of the Chiefs on one side of the 50 yd line and the visiting team on the other side (on this occasion the Jets)--I'm not sure why he didn't on this occassion
Yes this is the era I started watching Football in but even I was surprised to see a guy lighting a smoke on the sidelines. Forgot you could smoke anywhere in those days

Virgil I can't thank you enough for posting these games and I love watching my Vikings of the past It really does bring back a lot of memories where I was when these games were actually played. I think "FB Database" or something like that has the full schedule back to 1975 or 76 and the forum section of the maps site has the telecasts listed back to the 60's

I thank God above for being gifted such a wonderful experience in my life and if I'm fortunate enough to welcomed into Heaven, it's my hope that the good Lord will let me go back and re-live some of those days again. LONG LIVE THE AFL!!!
I love watching the old commercials.. things have changed
Yep, I like how there's just two short commercials at every break... not like today how we have 7 or 8 that last nearly five minutes.

@devildog1982z I corrected it
I am pretty sure one of the Jets running backs also in the HOF.. Either Snell or Boozer....
You left out Jan Stenerud

And Ed Podolak too .

Incredibly cheap. So jacked up.
Oh boo hoo. Poor Joe. Namath was the beginning of the end of Western civilization.
cheap is an understatement. Would be huge fine leveed against that player today.
Len Dawson STILL in the game in the 4th quarter. Ed Podolak still there. WOW!!!!! This is preseason.
That was normal back then. In those days, players were not with their teams year-round as many actually worked off-season jobs as the money was NOT EVEN CLOSE to what it is now, even adjusted for inflation. They used the pre-season to actually play themselves into shape. MUCH different now with the level of off-season programs and so forth.
www.nfl.com/schedules/1971/REG/JETS
Its not preseason unless im nuts... no its reg.
@@brucefranklin1317 The Jets beat the Chiefs 13-10 on November 7, 1971 in their only regular season meeting. This is a pre-season game.
Man, these videos are epic!
1:39 Wow this is BEFORE Arrowhead Stadium was open (I have never even seen a GAME played a Municipal Stadium in Kansas City)
Also Joseph you see there are no stands in what is the outfield that are normally there for a Chief game , because the Royals played the Yankees the day before. I believe the added seats added another 2500 or so seats. Awesome stadium!!!
Arrowhead open in 1973
@@ricdean4314 The Chiefs began playing at Arrowhead in 1972. Royals Stadium opened in 1973.
It was according to Wikipedia. It was played on August 30, 1971.
@radar0412. I believe they'll have to get past Buffalo this year if they want to get back to the Super Bowl.
I remember watching this game back in 71. Chief fan since 69.Yes it was a preseason game.
I remember all those shaving commercials. So many brands and types of razor. Cigarette commercials ended in 1970.
Ironic, this game is preserved but the double overtime Miami-KC game has very little video broadcast remaining.
Monday night football seems to have preserved its broadcasts more astutely
Keith Jackson was the play-by-play man in the inaugural 1970 season. This might have been Gifford's first broadcast with the MNF crew and it shows because he's making mistakes right and left. Thus the beginning of Cosell's sarcastic ribbing of "Faultless Frank".
Gifford did do play-by-play for a couple CBS games the previous seasons.
Gifford's contract with CBS didn't end until the year after MNF began--at that point he was free to sign with ABC and Roone Arledge brought him to MNF
Keith Jackson was so much better
@@stevensicherman4101 agree. frank was an ex giant pretty boy. and thats it.
Gifford made mistakes left and right for 30 years.
Yes. Thanks for posting. My dad was at that game.
Oh my, I forgot professional football players used to "form tackle".
yep, all the time.
Great interview of Namath by Cosell.
Yes, preseason. ABC trying out maroon jackets instead of the standard gold. And I've never seen KC Municipal Stadium other than this game, either.
Jessica Roth 1971 was the last year the Kansas City Chiefs played at municipal stadium. In 1972 they played at arrowhead stadium.
Look at the video of the longest game in history. Miami vs KC. That was at old Municipal.
Yes it is preseason. When the Chiefs played at the old Municipal Stadium the outfield was left without moveable bleachers in the preseason.
Preseason where the starters play the whole game. Wow.have times changed
Ah the days when a punter number 44 kicks to returners numbers 19 and 7
It's definitely preseason because there's a quick frame at the beginning of the tape that captured an "ABC Preseason Special" at the very beginning.
It's week 8. Jets won 13-10.
@@glentodd7349 At Shea Stadium.
As a kid I watched these games in the early 1970s. This brings back such great memories. Why doesn't MNF use that opening music and videos? Bring it back. Such greatness.
I always remember that first Superbowl, even before that, now that's crazy
the vintage commercials were fun to remember, too.
Noice! Back when MNF was worth watching! I was 11 and playing Pop Warner Pee Wee FB. I was big on Howard Cossell color analysis.
They met in the regular season in 1971, at Shea Stadium, and the Jets won.
Those were the days my friend.T.D
That original introductory theme music for ABC’s Monday Night Football from 1970 through 1975 was , is and always will be, in my most biased and extremely subjectively opinion, the best opening intro for pro football on TV. I believe that it was / is called “Score”.
Probably preseason. The first regular season game I ever went to was at Shea when KC was in town 1971. I had just discovered football and loved it. My father, an ardent Jets' fan saw an opportunity to get out of the house and got tickets. I never became a Jets fan but I recall them winning 16-13. Could be wrong.
It was preseason. Gifford announced at the end of the game, that K C won it's 4th preseason game.
2:06:30 ...Tom Selleck in a Right Guard commercial... long before anybody really knew who he was.
He was in Myra Breckenridge with Raquel Welch in 1970.. I think that may have been his acting debut..
He could never last a complete game in this era.
blue zylon LOL
The only QB better than Brady was Doug Flutie.
The only Quarterback better than Brady. Was Lynn Dykey
Yes this was a 1971 preseason game, Namath was injured in the first week of preseason.

yes this is preseason game, great to have original broadcast at chiefs' stadium of 60s

This is a preseason game??? Wow, how times have changed. Teams wanted to win exhibitions back then.
Notice no excessive celebration, just score and go back to the bench. No taunting either.
Len Dawson said after watching the Jets beat the Colts in Super Bowl Three! He Cried..... We belonged

Howard Cosell that man is a legend
during that time you either loved Mr. Cosell or you hated him-many people would watch the game on TV but turn off the audio and get the play by play from Westwood 1's broadcast of the game (I believe Jack Buck announced the games then)
thanks for posting
I remember those QANTAS commercials with Koala Bear especially sitting on a airplane chair!!!!!!
The ABC Pre-Season telecasts from 1974 were:
The Hall of Fame Game between Buffalo v St Louis
Detroit at Kansas City August 5
Minnesota at Miami August 19
Oakland at San Francisco September 2
Pittsburgh at Dallas September 6
This absolutely *is* a preseason game. The Chiefs did play the Jets in 1971 during the regular season, but it was played in New York.
The Kansas City Royals were still in baseball season, so the infield is not re-sodded, and temporary seats are not in left field.
This was the final game of the 1971 Preseason schedule. They met at Shea in Week 8 of that season with the Jets winning that game 13-10.
Richard Long from Nanny and the Professor and The Big Valley!
If the Jets actually knew what they had in Riggo!
Should have kept Riggins and traded Namath's ass.
Why he look so short in this game?
You might say Riggins had two careers.
It was a pre-season game, and the Royals were still playing baseball.
Love the name "Weeb". Weeb Eubank - never met anyone else named Weeb...I did know a guy in college that everyone called "Weed". He was pretty cool.

I think "FB Database" or something like that has the full schedule back to 1975 or 76 and the forum section of the maps site has the telecasts listed back to the 60's
