I started a white paper birch about 15 years ago, but have never seen one in a bonsai pot. Which is bizarre to me. It's one of the most beautiful trees once it matures. Nothing quite like it. I can't believe that more people haven't worked with them over the years!
I have a number of birch under development and really enjoy working them. It was really interesting to hear your 3 tips in relation to 'branch ditching'. I shall make a point of following these principles next year and see what happens. Great content.
So great to see a video about Birch. It´s becoming one of my favorite bonsai. I started up two (Betula pendula) from seedlings 4 years ago from my hedge and i have wired them in some very cool forms. Last year i bought a Betula Utilis (Himalayan Birch) and will try to do a great bonsai with that. I just love the paper white bark they have and never loose it, like the pendula does.
Great tips. Always been told that these are "not good for bonsai." The need for water and sunlight to the interior makes sense. Can you do a video on elm? I'm wondering why mine are always so leggy.
Nice birches Andrew! I live in Sweden and birch is like a weed here, this video inspired me to pursue betula more. I’m definitely going to collect a few next spring!
looks like you've had great success! I found the same things while working on my birch (betula pendula) like water, sun, deeper pot. also some success with scion grafts, haven't tried thread grafts yet. I will also do defoliation next year now Im getting some branching. :)
One more thing don't wire or prune Birch tree after August. The Birch tree doesn't have enough time to heal and will lose branches,This is for us in the uk. I don't know about us😊
Thanks for sharing your experience, I haven’t found that to be true in my garden, I’ve wired and pruned birch all winter long for a few years with zero loss, but we have a very mild winter which might help
I have a question i hope you can help answer. When you collect a birch yamadori and you successfully transfer it into a trainingpot or a wooden box, do you put it in full sun, or do you recomend shade for a while?
I shapped a free birch in ground. Then one seasoned took courage to lift it from ground. Took care of it for 3 more years and one day it just died. From wilting to dry, 3 days. 7 yrs of hard work, gone in 3 days. 😢

We’re definitely hoping to see more as bonsai in the future, glad you’re growing some paper birch!
Glad you doing RUclips videos now. Im really enjoying them
Thanks for the comment, more on the way!
Bonsai is a great , though I never managed to investigate it. Best wishes
Many thanks!
Rushed home from dusting kowatari today to watch this. Birch
Great video, Andrew. I have had a couple of betula pendula for about decade. Agree with your assessment, water is crucial.
Thanks, happy to hear others are experiencing the same

Thanks for tuning in, and good luck with your birches!

Glad you are enjoying! I’ll have an elm video up sometime soon in the new year! Thanks for the suggestion!

Wow, cheers! Have fun with them, they’re a really beautiful tree!
@@rakuyobonsai they really are!
Wow, It's rare to see Birch Bonsai! Beautiful and thank you for the growing tips.
It is, hopefully we start seeing more in the future!
so glad to see you experimenting with birch! i just started a clump from seedlings and im eager to see how they behave in the spring.
Awesome, we need more people growing birch! Good luck with it!

Have the oposite experience here in Norway.

Hello, can you bring your “Beech Forest on stone” to the Shohin School in January? I would love to get a closer look.
That one is too heavy to move, but we'll be hosting visitors on Friday before Shohin School starts, more info to come in an email
That is very generous of you! I’m in! I will be on the lookout for the email .
Nice video, thank for taking the time... what sort of environments can birch make it in? Socal too hot during Winter?
So Cal is likely too hot, most birch that I’m familiar with need a good dormancy period
Trips me out that you can get some ramification out of these birch trees, like this.
They respond well to good technique!
Check out the german Hermann Haas
Will do!
What containers/medium was the kobudachi grown in up to this point? Those are pretty substantial for 6 years. Thanks!
An Anderson flat plastic pot for most of the years, and recently went into a pot last spring
@@rakuyobonsai in Anderson flat that is escaping into the ground?

All deciduous trees at RAKUYO are in full sun in the spring, and then 50% shade cloth in the summer heat.
Do Birch have to have a really cold winter ?
They'll be a lot happier if they have a proper winter with freezing temps

Very sorry to hear that, they can be more tricky than other species
