I love your unbiased review on what is the XPS 13 capable of. I own both XPS 13’ 2017 with touch screen and MacBook Pro 13 2018. Both of them are great laptop and it depends on what you are going to do with the setup and what software you are going to use. As I cannot have two setup for my workload productivity, I leave my XPS 13 to my wife and she is loving it.

@@stupididiot2199 Oh I keep up, but for some reason AMD just always seem to disappoint. I have built numerous PC's over the years with them and was never impressed for the 100.00 I saved for the heat they generated. I have yet to see an AMD chip that can stay cool in a laptop, I would be curious to see if they can do it. Intel has done better here, but IMO, they still have work to do, heat kills electronics and battery. Multi-core desktop for AMD dont translate to a portable platform, multicore from intel still works for the masses and can still get pretty good battery life, hence why I doubt we will see AMD in this arena anytime soon!

I have now received the laptop and damn it looks gorgeous! Forgive me Lord as I have sinned and could not resist such beauty regardless of its flaws. Be warned though, that after seeing this laptop all other laptops will look mediocre at best. The new XPS 13 has truly raised the bar when it comes to looks and quality. Most importantly, I was deeply concerned with the heating issues some reviewers spoke about. However, I can confirm that after I changed the setting to cool through the Dell Power Manager the difference is very noticeable. In fact, I am currently typing this comment while the laptop is on my lap. The 16:10 aspect ratio is perfect because it's a great balance between consuming video and productivity. The 3:2 aspect ratio Microsoft uses is too much for me and makes the experience of watching movies look out of date. In any case, if bad things start to appear I promise to leave an update. Thanks.

Hm, that graph should have been in there. It's really not impressive at 241MB/s avg in PC Mark 8 (good balance of benchmarks to put SSDs in perspective). Not sure if they're keeping it limited for thermals, or they're just cheaping out. Considering the rest, likely the first.

No this is very different. A high end nvme would usually score in the 500 to 700 MB/s range. Cheap sata options would score less than 200 here. It's still not high though. There are some graphs in my other laptop reviews that show more on this.

They may be louder now but i notice they're now bottom facing so doesn't that make the sound quality more dull with less high frequencies. On previous models speakers where on both sides so more "open" if you understand what i mean.

If it can get more than 500nits based on some settings I don’t think it’s misinformation for marketing it as capable of over 500nits. I really don’t get what you’re arguing about with respect to that.

    • @TechTesters
      @TechTesters  4 года назад

There is a difference between "wrong" marketing and "slightly misleading" marketing. This isn't about them being "wrong" in a super strict sense, this is about actual users expecting a 500 nits display in regular use compared to alternatives, and not seeing that in normal use. Most buyers will simply never see those 500 nits. I am 100% behind calling that out. If Dell adds a little footnote on their marketing claims, clarifying 500 nits is for HDR mode only, I would also be OK with that.

Running Manjaro Linux on exactly this lappie with tpu and auto-cpufreq and the fans are almost never audible. I should say that mine came with Windows and a lot of Dell bloatware that made the thing spin the fans all the time. To remove that crap you need to turn off secure boot and RAID and a couple more BIOS options ... but you can google that. Now it's running a real OS it's just the most brilliant little machine, solid as a rock, great keyboard, never hot, best laptop I've ever had. Though I agree the battery life with the 4K display is a bit sad - will probably swap it out for one with the 1080p panel when civilization comes back ...

Depends on what you do. In this case, less than 80 degrees in a heavy stress test is good. Many laptops will easily go 90+ in stress tests. It's also not really harmful.
75 while only browsing however is higher than expected. Maybe its time to clean the fans out? :)

Bad experience so far. Bought XPS13 on 28 June 2020. Motherboard failed on 3 August. Dell refused to send me a new replacement computer. Dell ordered a replacement mother board so their on-site technician can change. Technician arrived 24 August with replacement "refurbished" mother board and it too failed. It's a brand new computer. Next estimated parts date is 7 September. The computer is now broken longer than it functioned. Unhappy user.

For some reason, Dell won't offer the 1080p touch panel paired with the i7 here in NZ, so i'm having to choose between the i5, or the poor battery life that comes with the 4k panel.
    Very frustrating.

Some of their local restrictions make zero sense 😒 it all comes from the same factory anyway.

Hope to see some high-end model get AMD 4000 series cpu, like XPS 13/15/17 or ROG Zephyrus M/S but not G series

The AMD H series laptop kills this in perf and battery life.

      Not enough that it matters.

@@TechTesters thanks for your reply. I want it for photo editing, and of course portability. Is there another laptop that you might suggest that I look at?

The problem with Dell's claims on the display is that the PANEL is capable of the specified spec, but they didn't configure them to do so. Their built in profile is pretty useless.
