Happy 5 years! Wow, this is such a lovely way to commemorate it! :) Never heard the track before, but I love it. The little details like the engines' number to the lyrics aren't avoided. This is like the Woodhead theme song! Here's to more years, and less soot and cinders.
Cracking video, sir. Great to hear the original version of this song, too. Please let this become a regular series. It's puzzled me for awhile why there are so few British railway songs; Over here in America, we're silly with them, and trains have featured hugely in virtually every other form of literary art in Britain except music. A series like this would be a fantastic way to introduce this oft overlooked tradition.
here are the lyrics took me 40 min to do: Smoke in my eyes, Soot in my hair, Cinders in my shoes, Im watchin the needle fallin away and singing the eight freight blues Well we are runnin late in a sorry state on 8215, She’s overdue on boilerwork and I can’t get her to steam, With a thousand tonnes of coal behind and the tender full of slag, Me mates sent me to Coventry and they just won’t answer by Well Smoke in my eyes, Soot in my hair, Cinders in my shoes, Im watchin the needle fallin away and singing the eight freight blues Now across the Cab the driver sits and starein strait ahead , He hasn’t spoken to me in eighteen months since I started at the sheds, He’s drawn a line across the cab for each of us to stand, since he found I joined the NUR since he was a AZLEEF man Well Smoke in my eyes, Soot in my hair, Cinders in my shoes, Im watchin the needle fallin away and singing the eight freight blues AAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH I fired her thin and plied it in but still she wouldn’t go When the water dropped I forced to stop on the mainline for a Blow I smashed the clinker cleaned the fire I tried every trick I know, With a rake and dart that old fart blames me for all our woes, Smoke in my eyes, Soot in my hair, Cinders in my shoes, Im watchin the needle fallin away and singing the eight freight blues With a one in sixty climb ahead and the water out of sight, We’ll have to stop and blow her up for the second time tonight, The load comes on the engine and the start is showing green, I’m looking for the banker but no bankers to be seen just Smoke in my eyes, Soot in my hair, Cinders in my shoes, Im watchin the needle fallin away and singing the eight freight blues Now the driver comes from Motherwell his face I can’t abide, He only know full foreward gear with the regulator wide, I can’t touch his injector and mine is short of breath, I wish balls would turn into bulldogs arm and bite the sod to death, Well Smoke in my eyes, Soot in my hair, Cinders in my shoes, Im watchin the needle fallin away and singing the eight freight blues Smoke in my eyes, Soot in my hair, Cinders in my shoes, Im watchin the needle fallin away and singing the eight freight blues there all done!
A bit late to the party, but the words NUR and ASLEF (not AZLEEF) mean National Union of Railwaymen and Associated Society of Locomotive Engineers and Firemen. Basically, two brtitish, opposing each other unions
According to my research, #48215 was built by the North British Locomotive Company of Glasgow, Scotland in August 1942 for the LMS as their #8215. She became British Railways #48215 in 1948 and stayed on the job until the old scot was withdrawn from service on July 9th, 1966. She was cut up in November 1966 at the age of 23.
Told you :P There are some very impressive shots in there which really gives it a sense of scale and 3Dness. I don't think anyone could have done a Goulder MV any better! I now demand that you make a music video for each and every song in the album ;)
5 years? Jesus Christ Mayo, you've done a damn good job with all of the content produced. Keep it up and you'll soon hit 10K. -Best wishes for the future, Alex.
@@limeddasch382 Well, it's possible that since this is the 'end of BR steam era' (48215 herself was withdrawn and scrapped in 1966), maybe some lads on a surreptitious 'shed bash' decided to give her a bit of a clean when the shed staff weren't looking?
Congrats for 5 years! And this is amazing! And I after I watched this video, I went to look for the music, and its called "Late freight blues" right? And I think you made a pun with the 8F by calling the video "Eight freight blues" But still, congrats!
Ha, looks like I got the wrong music then, but anyways, great footages and camera views, hope for more content, and Congrats for half a decade old channel ;) P.S. I just realized that I spent over 120 USD on Railworks, geez Good day, BigAllan
@@knuckles1206 I would not be surprised if he did. I worked with a guy who was a fireman till the end of steam and left the footplate behind. He told me of a driver like this and of how he drew a chalk line on the cab floor and kept the regulator wide open all the time using the reverser and brake to vary speed. The tender used to be empty by journeys end most of the coal blasted out of the chimney. He was a LM driver and listening to this made me wonder if it was that driver in the song.
@@cedarcamwell the events of this song occurred when Goulder was 16 years old and had just started on the footplate. The “I forced a stop on the mainline” part was that he couldn’t get steam up and ended up running out of steam. When he got back to the shed at sign off time the driver said “This fireman is terrible! Give me a real one tomorrow!” And Dave goulder was near tears. To be honest the guy sounds like an absolute nightmare to work with and especially deserved that bulldog remark
@@mcbenman1793 Thanks for the info. Some tales my workmate told me were of drivers who were unpleasant to work with others would help out a young lad, he enjoyed working with one in particular who taught him a lot. Not all rosy working on steam as we often like to think going to our heritage railways
It's funny, I've only just "discovered" Dave Goulder' s railway song a few days ago. Very nice credit to him! But wasn't that song originally called "Late Freight Blues"? Also, happy 5th anniversary, pal! ;-)
Thanks man. But if you follow the link in the description to Dave Goulder's album page, the song is actually called 'Eight Freight Blues'. The 'Late Freight Blues' version came slightly later, he recorded it for an interview in a railway documentary, and the footage showed a Black 5 as opposed to an 8F, hence the lyric change. :)
TheScotsmanReturns Ah, alright. Still, smashing songs, these. Planning to make a Railworks video of "Black 5" myself. Pure poetry, and always exactly how I feel about steam engines!

Oh hi Max :)

You are doing the community a favor for making this. If it wasn’t for you, many people would have never discovered this song or artist.
Half a decade is indeed terrifying~
I feel soooooooo old!!!! :P

Australian National Productions I stand in your shadow. You don‘t find that steely determination much these days.
I just copied and pasted the lyrics into a word document. You did brilliant work on that lyrics.
Thanks!

Now she really is in a sorry state, she was probably scrapped because her firebox was so clinkered up that it was beyond repair
Withdrawn due to boiler issues???
Rip to her
This guy has been inactive for 3 years now. Yet his content still entertains us. Bravo.
Congratulations on 5 whole years. Great content for quite some time now. Hope you continue on strong.

TheScotsmanReturns any time in june it will be one year for me
this music to my ears (literally) great video mate! and also congratulations on 5 years of youtube I'm glad that you survived the comment section!
When comments are this nice, the comments section is a walk in the park. ;)
yeah and that's why the railway community is one of the best!
this is one of your best videos yet
its funny how before this video, I was listening to 8 freight blues.
Congrats on 5 years, mate; and brilliant remake!
Thank you! :)
I am an argentinian railway worker on the freight trains. Love this song!
What a great music video and song to accompany it! This was fabulous, Mayoorhan - here's to another five more years! ;)
Thanks man! :)
Awesome video for 5 years! Congratulations! :)
Thanks dood! :)
By the way! I forgot to mention how god damn catchy this song is....I literally cant stop listening to it

I cant believe I just found this but this is amazing.
Gotta love these, these tunes should be acknowledged more
Indeed, most of them are surprisingly good! :)
Over a decade now you are a legend
Such a great song! cannot believe I have only found this.
Congratulations on 5 years
Great video, I love the camera shots! : )
Thanks for helping inspire me to be a metal worker.
Great vid, I wish I made videos like this, my vids are terrible!

P.s congrats for 5 years
one problem: 8215 looks WAAAY too clean to be in the condition described in the song
Ferris Welker true
or accurate to BR days at all. Preserved, All but the red 8f look like that
That makes sense (unless of course it was just cleaned?)
iron 13 Couldn‘t agree more. You‘d expect it be covered in an eight inch of dirt, rust everywhere, line work torn off, dented.

make this a regular thing please this is really good
Thank you, and who knows if things work out well, I might end up making a few more of the Goulder songs. Only the very good ones. ;)
i would suggest the turntable song for one as that might be good to do in train simulator
The Great Western Way poop
Idk random
Indeed! I'd love to see more of this!
Well for starters you could put Waterloo Sunset into Railworks (if you have a Bulleid Pacific)
This is just amazing!!! I love this so much!!
12 years eh? still holds up extremely well
This is nicely done. Keep it up!
This really is something special! T
I love it!
Absolutely amazing one of my favourite songs from Dave all the best oli
Finally a train simulator video in a long time and Best song I've ever heard

BigAllan in the song, he directly references the engine number, 8215; which is the engine in the video :)
that .....was.... Amazing!!!:D
Thank you! :)
I love this song
My friend who likes trains send this to me and now I’m worry that I’m going too be recommended train stuff from RUclips

I just love Railworks even more now!
