I can see how the Star Wars galaxy used this analogy of trade routes. It was crucial that planets and corporations had a private army to protect their cargo vessels using trade routes that were prey to piracy.
It would have helped to mention, shipping costs have an inelastic demand curve. That is, the price of shipping costs are so low, on average about 3% per product, that a 25% increase in costs, because of this conflict, is unlikely to have any significance on the total price of the shipped goods.
If the only problems was increased risk. Companies are losing hundreds of millions of hijacked ships with valuable cargo. It’s so bad that they are choosing to go around Africa which adds more costs and delays. Items value decrease the longer they are being shipped and would also need more insurance. Even more time to go back and forth which means they need more ships.
If it is inelastic demand curve then that means the price can go up or down and demand stays the same. Yet, you say in the last sentence that it is unlikely to have any significance on the total price of the shipped goods, which would only be the case for elastic goods. If it was inelastic then they would have no issue raising the price.
@@tucker8071 An elastic demand is sensitive to the final price of the product. That is, a higher price is likely to result in lower demand. This is not true here. Therefore, shipping companies do frequently increase raise prices (which results in a high degree of variance), and this results in a very little change in demand. Therefore, the demand to price ratio is (relatively) inelastic.
@@posthocprior I agree with this second comment but your first comment needs to be amended to say "the total demand of the shipped goods" not the "total price". That would make more sense.

You’re delusional if you think this isn’t your problem. You’re the world’s largest economy, one of the largest importers of goods and oil via maritime transport. You have no idea how the global economy works if you think your nation should turn a blind eye to state sponsored piracy.
The attack on the Houthi military sites was too little and is most probably going to prove ineffective. We expect that the Houthis will continue to be supplied by their sources of supply and that they will continue to be encouraged, if not commanded by their regional masters, to continue to act aggressively there. The Houthis have not lost any significant support, at this point in time, and their support may have grown rather than diminished, due to ideological factors specific to the region. It is going to be very expensive and very difficult to restore security to the affected shipping lanes and it will not happen quickly, if it happens at all any time in the foreseeable future. The trouble that has begun there could last for years, and even for decades, given the current conditions and assuming sporadic bursts of aggression. Similar to the situation involving other extremist, militant, groups in the region the only truly effective means to reducing and perhaps eliminating acts of aggression and acts of terrorism would be to effectively eliminate the sources of supply that enable those acts. Short of that we do not see any real probabilities as to the types of results that are being sought by means of current actions.
The traffic through Suez now has to now face both terrorism with missiles and drones along with the piracy that was already there. Hope this gets resolved at the earliest.

Well say that to the 20 people who got killed by USA in Yemen, they also were innocent and had nothing to do with anything, just like the 20k childeren that were killed by Israel
You would be better off with Airfreight method of transportation rather than taking this dodgy route and the additional burden of not reaching the other end. Or send Airfreight to Egypt and continue on seafreight from there to your final destination.
And yet in spite of this danger many tour operators still organise flights and cruises going over this hotspot
my company is forced to take the day off tomorrow because of a chemical supply disruption caused by these pirates.
I’m from Yemen, don’t worry folks this just a game for news by both sides 😅

No one has been hurt and targets in empty water by Huthies and empty land by US.
You’re from Yemen and you think it’s just a game for news… The country is one of the poorest, while Iran funds extremists in Yemen to do this “in response to what Israel does”, while risking the poor people of your country.
It’s sad that Yemen militants groups don’t value human life. I’m not even talking about the cargo ships, their own citizens will suffer for this.
I agree with you. They should first ensure their own people's safety.
@@TariqAlabusaniYemenis are not the greatest but the Houthis are an extremist group, basically in complete control of Iran and completely funded by them.

New tactics to protect ships and deter such behaviour is being implemented but things are always changing! Definitely tough but strategies need to be adapted for safe passage within this area!
Why isn't the Israeli navy out there making a contribution to the defense of their own shipping lanes?
It's not your Shipping Lane it Yemenis pal!!😊
This is not just Somali pirates. People call the Houthis rebels, but they are a de facto government which is relatively well armed (Iranian money, but also the fact that they kept many of Salem's toys).

yup, israel just needs to stop their genocide.... isn't it simple enough for people to understand... sad

The way shipping companies raise the freight cost to almost double over the past month is disgusting. Yes, they take longer route and need to consume more fuel but they also doesn't need to pay Suez canal exorbitant cost. Furthermore, everyone in shipping industries know they have massive oversupply of ships because they all being shortsighted and order too much new ships on 2022. There are literally no justification for increase in freight cost. While Houthi terrorism attack is horrible, the shipping companies that take advantage of the chaos for the sake of profit is equally disgusting.
Sure they are literal pirates, Islamic terrorist raiding parties, and thousands of miles of re-routing but how dare they raise prices!
"There are literally no justification for increase in freight cost." You are ignorant.
The liner operators are certainly taking advantage of an unexpected swing in the fundamentals but with the flood of new tonnage entering they can’t sustain the rate increases for too long. FYI, all of the accessorials are revenue generators above all else. Nothing is new in container/ mpp business except that it became massively profitable (briefly) for the first time in anyone’s lifetime.
@@lawrencefrost9063Are you naive? The cost to pass is just few hundred thousands. Its just a fraction of a billions worth of goods they are carrying.

As if it's that simple... you have to know it's not.
If Russia had not attacked Ukraine, they could have pitched a partnership with the U.S to ship goods from Europe and Asia across the Bering Straight on a rail bridge into Alaska which could then have been transported to the U.S via the Canada/Alaska highway.

Don't let other countries use us for their benefit. Enough is enough.
We need to think for ourselves.
Yeah but it’s a knock on effect - if this terrorism is allowed to proliferates it will worsen. No country can insulate itself from global events. Iran will just become emboldened to challenge US influence in the Middle East, which in turn emboldens China and Russia.
You’re delusional if you think this isn’t your problem. You’re the world’s largest economy, one of the largest importers of goods and oil via maritime transport. You have no idea how the global economy works if you think your nation should turn a blind eye to state sponsored piracy.
Happy to hear and see the europeans are suffering from economic trade..
Why would anyone wear a go pro camera while taking over a ship? 🛳️ by gun??? That makes zero sense
U get what u get for messing with people's lives and counties stand by and let it happen... Good for Yemen
For targeting civilians, don't cry when they face proportionate responses.
The traffic through Suez now has to now face both terrorism with missiles and drones along with the piracy that was already there. Hope this gets resolved at the earliest.
Yemenis literally own the passage, but what do they get out of it? Babe, time to settle the bill.

it became dangerous when some invader's tried to expel innocent people from their land. Someone has to standup against this and the Houthi's did it. Kudos to Yemen, you people are brave, anyone who fight for their land are brave.
How does attacking innocent civilian cargo ships help Palestinians? And the Houthi rebels are fighting against the Yemeni government, the Houthi fighters are not elected or chosen by the Yemeni people. Supporting the Houthis means supporting piracy and terrorism, not "fighting for their land".
