I highly recommend loose bedding for rats since it's better from an enrichment and cleaning/smell point of view. I used fleece for about 6 months before switching to aspen and it changed my life lol
its all about preference tbh. Both work, but i feel that fleece is better becausefor me there are less health issues. When ive used bedding ammonia started happening
@@kahoku_lani2548 What bedding did you use? You need ammonia neutralizing. Fleece doesn't neutralize ammonia and can lead to ammonia build up in rats just like some loose bedding. It should be changed every other day to prevent ammonia build up which isn't realistic for most people. Bedding choices that neutralize ammonia include wood based (no cedar, pine must be kiln dried) or hemp based. Hope this helped (:
One of the best investments I’ve made while owning rats is a sewing machine! Fleece is fairly cheap and come in soooo many designs, so I’m able to make and fix all of my liners and it’s saved me a lot of money!
this is super cute, my only tip for you is that rats need a little more clutter, I know you like to keep things very clean but the best rat cages honestly look like they’ve been thrown together, a great channel to look at is maddie leonczek who has a perfect rat cage in my opinion. lots of rope and crazy stuff is crucial to giving them enough enrichment,
My rats did the same thing with fleece before I finally caved and got a cement mixing bin from Home Depot and filled it with loose bedding. They loved to burrow in it and it helped with the smell a lot! I used dust free bedding and they never had respiratory issues and lived long happy lives. It’s so frustrating though because the fleece liners are really cute!
@@AlyssaNPets I think it’s was the 36x24. There’s a youtuber called shadowtherat who has a video on how to trim the bin to fit in the cage and that’s what I followed!
I wish rats weren't so misunderstood, especially animals with red eyes. They are so sweet, cute, and intelligent. I love they enclosure! Have a great holiday❤️💚❤️💚
I have 8 rats and I was thinking "oh I'm sure Alyssa would love having rats as pets" and then you actually got them!! I'm so happy for you and for them ❤️❤️❤️
OMG I love your channel so much your channel is the best and I really want to be like you when I grow up I am subscribed I have all my Post notifications turned on and I love you so much❤️
I love watching videos of your pets! If you ever think about getting another pet, it should definitely be a bird. They are so unique and fun to care for, I have a budgie and he’s my absolute world 🦜❤️
@@AlyssaNPets I didn’t think I would be either until I got one. They are super easy to care for and they live a really long time. Also, growing up in a toxic household really sucked and having my bird really helped with the depression lol
Love your cage, and your rattys, i wish i had invested in a critter nation cage, i have a smaller cage for my girls, its almost as big as a single critter nation, theres pros and cons about my cage, one of the pros is, the front door drops down to the floor and makes a ramp for my girls to get out the cage easily on there own without jumping down, one of the cons is, the whole front doesnt open, so its a bit more difficult to clean out, but i manage usually i lift the cage off the base to clean it one of my rattys is poorly, she has a massive tumour under her butt, i think monday i will have to book her into the vets to say goodbye to her, its one of the hardest things i have to do, but if i dont, and the tumour ruptures, she might suffer a slow, painful death, which i of course dont want, so at this point, even though shes still full of life and still very loving, its kinder to have her put to sleep :(
It’s possible they arent using the hammock because they can’t get to it. Maybe try putting in some IKEA tie holders as an added way for them to get around the cage and they might use the hammocks more.
Instead of buying liners I go to Joanne fabrics and go to the remnant section. There are all random rolls of left over fabric including fleece and it’s super discounted.
I love your cage it’s amazing but o have a recommendation add more climbs and stuff you have e a lot of beds and hammocks so I recommend on RUclips search up a “active cat set up”
Try putting more chewable things in their cage to keep them more occupied then trying to chew up the liners. When my rats were younger I would take the card board of a toilet paper roll and make it into a ball where you out treats in and they also chew the cardboard pieces too. Love your videos keep up the good work ❤❤❤
@@lozzibear1989 fleece is suitable bedding? Fleece works very well for me and loose bedding costs me double, is more of a mess, and stinks faster. My rats use litter boxes with pellets along with the fleece. I just change the box 2 times a week and deep clean once a week. If you have problems with fleece, most likely the rats arent litter box trained well enough
Depends on your definition of suitable. To many it definitely isn't ssuitable. It doesn't allow them to express natural behaviours, like yours are trying to do and you are finding ways to stop them. The bedding I use is £7 and lasts for months so not really expensive at all. The biggest expense is the litter for their trays. Suitable substrates soak up any urine better than liners do and litter training them cuts down on this massively. Mine typically get their bedding changed monthly with spot cleans in between but even then it is mainly the litter trays that need changed.
@@lozzibear1989 i have 8, use to have 13 and still never had a issue with smell or using fleece. I also give them dig boxes to play in. Fleece is 5 dollars and lasts me months. Vs aspen shavings which i have to change more often, id pay 15 dollars a month. Fleece is also way more eco friendly as well. Also. Bonus. The tiles actually help the rats keep cool in the summer, so even if your rats arent ripping up the fleece, its good to have them in the cage anyways
I highly recomend just buying fleece from Joann fabric, it's normally on sale and it works EXACTLY the same as a liner, just tuck it in inderneath the tray. It's a lot cheaper and you can get a lot more of it. Baby rats/young rats don't really use hammocks because they seem kind of big to such a small rat and they have so much energy that they don't want to just curl up and relax. They will eventually like them, for now try putting fleece scraps in the hammocks to make it seem like a smaller space and they can hide.
Only halfway into this video and I already identify so much, lol. I finally got so fed up with my rats tearing up the liners and sleeping under them that I switched to paper bedding. Also, I used to have that same playpen when my newest boys were babies - be warned that they can jump out of that way earlier than you might think.
@@heatherogilvy1754 The best thing I’ve ever tried is getting like 10 of those tri-fold poster boards (you can usually find them at dollar stores for next to nothing) and taping them together. It’s nice because it can be folded up when not in use and it’s so tall that even my most athletic rats can’t jump it. I haven’t even had issues with any of them trying to chew it because they get so distracted with all the toys in the enclosure.

Rat hack, get heavy floor tiles from home depot and put them in the corners so they can't rip up the liners as much and climb under it
