As a game designer/systems developer in the industry, I both agree agree, and disagree. Don’t be dumb, and subscribe to that blanket statement, but DO make sure you own what you buy, and if possible, support physical, or at least a legally-guarded digital platform.
Naw I’d much rather just accept piracy. If these companies are too bothered to make sure we have access to buy these things, that’s all the excuse I need to take the easy way out. I can do the wrong thing, and justify it at the same time. Sounds like a win win for me.
There are some movies, mainly older movies or TV shows that I still own on DVD because they are not always available on any streaming services. Or sometimes those streaming services will remove a certain movie or TV show that I want to watch, but if I own the DVD, as long as I don't damage the disc, it will always be available.
"Stay Gold" is a reference to an 80s film called "The OutSiders" about a gang of boys growing up in the 50s. The cast is filled with a ton of people that broke and became very popular actors. It's a good watch, was a movie I watched a lot in my younger days.
outsiders is one of those movies we had to watch in school (after reading the book) and i absolutely loved it but I haven’t seen it since then lmao it’s been like 10 or so yrs
It’s crazy how much we’ve evolved from renting movies from Blockbuster to streaming it all on Netflix, Hulu, etc nowadays. Who knows what it’ll be like 10 or 20 years from now
i was listening to an old radio show from 2005 recently. they mentioned Netflix but as a dvd delivery service. they talked about the future being on demand. even texting and myspace were just starting out and just before youtube launched.
You must be new to the entire digital marketplace. It's weird how now that places have dumbed down the wording in the terms of service nobody ever reads on anything, people think they've discovered something. You have never technically fully owned any form of digital media since it's inception. The video game community has been especially annoying with thinking they discovered something now that the words can be understood by a middle schooler and steam started telling them up front about it.
@WillsonT011 You don't own physical media either, which are loaded with DRM nowadays. Actually, pirated digital media is the one you have the most ownership of.
I 100% agree with your take on physical media. I saw a reaction a while ago of The Matrix and the guy was showing his son the movie, and hence had a blu-ray cuz he was a fan, and the difference in quality was noticeable! Even with it being a small window on the screen I was amazed how obvious the difference in quality is compared to everyone else who'd stream the movie...
I think my favorite Halloween movie is probably ... Ernest Scared Stupid! You think it's dumb and it is but it's almost like they got John Carpenter to make the prosthetics cuz it holds up so good. It's so goofy that it actually ends up being great. It's a solid 9/10 would recommend.
My biggest problem with digital media is that the platform can edit or remove a movie you bought without telling you. Physical media preserves the authenticity of the movie.
The Shining is such a great movie. Hellraiser I and II are some of my favorites to watch leading up to Halloween. That, and Nightmare on Elm Street, The Thing, Monster Squad, or Aliens.
I'm watching Trick R Treat too tonight. I also like watching Cabin in the Woods, its a fun horror movie. You two need to watch The Shining. One of the best.
I worked in a local video store for a while. Mine was artsy though. They had the normal movies but they also had a big section for documentaries, foreign films, art films, etc. That's where I first saw anime, in the foreign films section.
My favorite Halloween tradition is to watch as many of "The Simpsons: Treehouse of Horror" episodes as possible. There is one episode per season (starting on Season 2), so there are quite a few of them. I admit that some of them are not as good as others, but there are a lot of fun parodies in them... including "The Shining"... or "The Shinning". 😁 For things I like and will listen to again or re-watch, I also prefer the actual CD's and DVD's. They can be collector's items as well as actual media... and as long as the discs are in good shape, you can watch them as many times as you want to and do not need internet or to maintain streaming services. Don't get me wrong, I can understand why they are both good for many, and perhaps to try out something you have not seen before. So as an option, fine. Streaming is great, but I don't like it to be the only option.
Trick 'r Treat is a yearly for me. Every Halloween along with the first Halloween film or a more intense rando, and then I tend to go classic with the Universal Golden Age lineup after 1am (Dracula, Frankenstein, etc.)
As an Oregonian, I am proud to announce that we, in fact, DO have the last Blockbuster in Bend. It's more of a tourist attraction than a store. The Shining was also filmed here. 😁
Trick r Treat is good but Immediately after Halloween I also like Krampus. You need to see The Shining! It is a lot scarier than people assume it is, nightmare moments. Plus after that you will be primed for Doctor Sleep (the sequel to The Shining)! Which is a great Stephen King movie!
My favorite Halloween movie is Nightmare on Elm Street. Not necessarily scary, but Freddy Kreuger is just so entertaining to watch. He’s my favorite horror movie villain.
Seriously, Y'all need to watch The Shining. It's an absolute masterpiece and I don't know what the little guy to the left might do if you continue to skip it. I can't watch him all the time. 😉😁
Speaking of physical media.💿 Anthony, I ordered a media cabinet 3 years ago. It was so huge I never unboxed it and put it together, until yesterday. It actually shipped in two boxes and weighed 100 pounds. My old cabinet I had about 20 years held about 300 blu rays. This one holds about 550 blu rays. It took a whole day to put it together, transfer my videos, and brake down the old cabinet, and put out everything on trash day. The parts are actually under warranty for 5 years, which is good.
Ironically physical media is making a slow but steady comeback, because so many streaming platforms don’t have the movies or shows we’re looking for because they can’t afford the licenses, or the licenses expire, or they can’t get the licenses no matter what because of legal bullshit. (Great example is the movie Dogma, it’s a great cult classic made by Kevin Smith but he can’t get it streamed or sell it digitally because the rights are owned by Harvey Weinstein, and he won’t give them up because he’s in jail.) So literally the only way to watch and save Lost Media is physically owning it.
I worked at Blockbuster when this episode came out. I hadn't seen it yet and my friend texted me the next day "Ha ha, you work at Blockbuster." He's nomrally a jerk, so I was a bit confused.
While in my late teens/early 20s my best friend's family owned a Mega Video. The back room was the default meet up spot and staging area for that night's shenanigans. I really miss that place. They ended up selling that spot to a Blockbuster at the absolute PERFECT time. Don't think they stayed open for much more than a year.
I loved streaming services until everyone made their own. Nowadays I just buy from movies anywhere so I still have digital copy but at least I own something. Although, studios have caught on and they are leaving movies anywhere, too. Physical media costs so much more now than I remember.
you gotta watch the shining. knowing a few scenes tell you nothing about the movie and you need to watch the whole thing to get the feeling, just like 2001...

The ghost clerk is the same as the bartender in the "Shining"
Hi Lloyd, a little slow tonight, isn't it? 😆😆😆
"Killer Klowns From Outer Space" is a fun watch around Halloween.
Don't I know it! 😁
One of my personal favorites! The prop design was on point.

As always with these reactions, I'm thrilled to watch this as soon as humanly possible.
It’s crazy how much we’ve evolved from renting movies from Blockbuster to streaming it all on Netflix, Hulu, etc nowadays. Who knows what it’ll be like 10 or 20 years from now

Someone is going to put all the streaming services together and unknowingly reinvent cable.
20 years from now we'll be renting again.
These big companies are now trying to make sure that you don't own that digital buy😮😮😮 Trust me, it's best to have a physical copy

I would completely drop $10k just to buy the rights to Blockbuster with no intention of ever making money off it.
Absolutely
Yeah but I don’t think he bought the rights to the corporation. I think he just bought a store, like the right to be an entrepreneur.
Yes, the way Randy is acting is a reference to The Shining
The very last Blockbuster is closing today, October 31st 2024, in Bend Oregon. Great timing for you reaction
i love Halloween, ironically fall and winter just warm my soul.
The shining and doctor sleep are a MUST see
Oh you two totally need to do Shining ASAP

Donnie Darko is my goto Halloween movie, it's such a great movie
The Shining is such a great movie. Hellraiser I and II are some of my favorites to watch leading up to Halloween. That, and Nightmare on Elm Street, The Thing, Monster Squad, or Aliens.
u watching this without having watched The Shinning is like watching Scary Movie withou having watched scream
You gotta go old school and find the episode that was made with spooky vision. Special guest appearance from Korn, I think?
I'm watching Trick R Treat too tonight. I also like watching Cabin in the Woods, its a fun horror movie.

definitely do the episode Douche and Turd Sandwich before next Tuesday
You know that a South Park character has gone insane when his legs start moving independently of each other.
Respect to Cartman committing to the part of the Hulk. He must've been freezing his tits off.

Favorite horror for me is Alien. It's just so good. Black Christmas from the 70's is another gem.
Always enjoy watching The Burbs every Halloween.
Shaun of the Dead, The Thing, and The Shining are my go-tos every year!
Owning physical media also protects your movies from studios and directors making changes for "modern audiences".
Every Halloween I watch Evil Dead
Watch The Shining!
My yearly is _Magic_ (1978). Definitely a hidden gem of the horror genre, despite also influencing Slappy of _Goosebumps_ fame.
I always watch Ernest Scared Stupid and The Crow
Good god, get to watching The Shinning 🤣
In Halloween I watch CNN, Fox News and some tv news. Really scare!!😂
I worked at a Blockbuster one summer 😂
My favorite Halloween movie is Nightmare on Elm Street. Not necessarily scary, but Freddy Kreuger is just so entertaining to watch. He’s my favorite horror movie villain.
I'm not much of a straight horror movie person. I usually go for horror adjacent stuff like Ghostbusters.
I have a yearly tradition to watch Halloween ON Halloween. This year I’m gonna be switching it up by watching it with the RiffTrax commentary
Last year a saw a Movie called " Totally Killer " it has 87% on Rotten Tomatoes. With Julie Bowen and Kiernan Shipka. I really liked that movie.

I love the kid who called them deevuhdees.
Ernest Scared Stupid, You guys should check out that movie for Halloween
