Shout out to Kolbe's try, Looked like a perfectly good advert for rugby to me. I was on the edge of my seat screaming at the TV. Plus the way Morne Steyn kicked the winning penalty again, after he did it 12 years prior. Such a great feel good story. The kicking game was absorbing and lead to two springbok tries in the second game. If anything it was the lions who seemed to be obsessed with beating the springboks at their own game.

This whole idea that the play was ugly is wrong. It was tense, and had drama. The springboks defense was just superb and I loved the scrum battle to. The Lions had ample opportunities to win the last test and take home a victory.

Just a question so if, Gatland came before the Tour started and ask if all controversy be kept out the press, and Rassie the started to complain about the match officials before a ball has even been kicked. Then to add insult you had 26 incidents Reffing bad calls against you, and not one in your favor, a Ref that turned his back twice on your Captain, to talk to the other Captain, offsides given against your team when they actually on sides, does the ref not actually have to see that you off sides? Then to add insult to injury he doesn't give off sides to the other team that is actually off sides. You dont think the British media and Fans would have been incensed. Totally get your bad vibes... 1/4. It seems that the bad spirit amongst players and supporters since the days of the RWC 2019 prevails with this tour's ending? Lion players ought to fight for every scarp. The Boks took their chances and turned it into points. That is how you win. Simple. Get the scoreboard ticking over. The Lion players in the decisive test let you down...big time! They failed you on the field of play. The Boks created magic with Steyn. That is the beauty of rugby. Get over your looser mentality, which is a disgrace. We shall not forget some England players who ripped off their silver medals in disgust at RWC 2019. This attitude in future games will not do you any good as a supporter or player. The fear factor of loosing games is a demon. I think the Lions in the 3rd test did magnificent! You should be proud and lift yourselves out of this gloom. Winning on the day comes from scoring the most points! And that was Steyn.

The referee was biased in the first match! 26 decisions is far too much errors for a professional rugby match. I’m sorry you are upset but I am also upset about the referee in the first match. I felt that Siya wasn’t given the same access to the Ref. I’m glad the boys stood up for themselves and didn’t keep quiet about the unfair treatment. You must stand up for yourself if treated unfairly. Lions played well in the third match and would have taken a lot of learning from this series. The Boks are number 1 and Jaques Nienaber is the head coach and is brilliant. Hopefully he gets the credit he deserves and is nominated for coach of the year when the awards come out! Eben bossed the lions and showed his world class pedigree - Siya was brilliant! And Cheslin showed his magic. Give credit were it is due. Lions showed excellent play in the third match when Fin came on and could have won it also. The third test was nail biting and could have gone either way but Boks took their chances when they had them - that’s why they brought in Steyn for the kicking - to take those chances!

@EJRK 99 Gatland started it with all his drops in the media after the sa a game. There was an agreement that the teams would not do that. Gatland was influencing the ref and sa kept quiet. Then came the first test which if you are not blind was a shocker and biased. Kolisi was totally disrespected too. Then came the kak because world rugby refused to acknowledge any of this. Rassie can hold his head high knowing that he changed the status quo and gave the boys a fighting chance.

Nick Berry showed his hand with two huge mistake. The knock-on, he called just scrum when the lions player the ball from offside position. That is not a 50-50 decision but really obvious and clear. And the tip tackle. Nick Berry made his own bed by informing Bok management that he will not allow the tugging over rugs and then allowed the lions to do that. I am sorry but this was necessary for someone to speak up. All the other decisions of the ref's was maybe just mistakes but really easy decisions mistakes was inexcusable. It was still proper test as the name say, it should not be easy . I wonder if this video would have ever seen the light if the lions won? You only get limited chances in test between teams of equal strength and that's how it should be. In the 3rd Test the lions attempted to open up the game when Russell came on but Boks defence refused to crack.

Good commentary about the series - Rassie's video was very shocking to see - was mind-blowing - just how the ref got everything wrong and would not engage with Bok captain yet giving all consideration to Lions captain - quiet bizarre - but as you said it - I agree with you - I think this video rattled the Lions and they lost 2nd test and thought they would win 3rd and then ....came Cheslin's try and Morne's kicking - and Jones appeared to be a bad sportsman in his interview after the match - quite surprised by his attitude - oh well its a strange world now compared to 2009

The problem is the refs get paid and they must be held at a higher level than players in many ways.
    1. If players play crap they get roasted and might even loose their place in the team.
    2. If coaches loose test matches they get roasted in public and can loose their job.
Why must refs be allowed to stuff up and not be held accountable in public? If they doing their job free of charge then no problem but they get paid ...
So like coaches and plays refs must take what they get and not have things covered up behind closed doors.
Good on Rassie for doing this because refs are getting away with far to many things and they make the same mistakes game in and game out affecting the results. After Rassies vid we definately saw a difference in the way they manage the game ... awesome

I don't understand how raising issues with referees can be seen as controversial. 26 errors made against one team in an 80 minute game ( only around of 30 minutes of actual play ) is too many to not have the issue raised. Referees have difficult jobs but just like doctors, when they make mistakes they must be held accountable. No subpar refereeing means no video.

Hi mate. You said you wouldn't go through Rassie's 60 minute video. Please do a video where you do go through it. I think it'll clear a lot of things up for everyone.
Frankly, people who take issue with Rassie's video do not have the game of Rugby's best interest at heart. They have the interests of the game's governing body in mind. There is a marked difference. This has all been done under a veil of Rassie's unsportsmanlike conduct by holding the referee to account. What Rassie is talking about is actually sportsmanship. A fair and level playing field. A sporting chance,: the idea that seperates our beloved games from the loaded dice and uneven playing fields we dredge through in our day to day. 26 bad calls is not sports. It's not sporting. It needs to be looked at. We keep hearing that because of interpretations of law that you could just as easily make a video of the Lion's getting 26 bad calls. We are yet to see that video. Sure, you could say that it's because the higher ground has been taken. But I have seen some crazy crap on the internet. Midgets having orgies wuth goats while skydiving. Still, I haven't seen a video that supports the theory of a difference in interpretation. Should there even be interpretation in sports? Is that an oxymoron?
Rassie's shrewd tactical prowess is as undeniable as his love of the Springboks. But I think he loves the game more.

The Lions fans are left disillusioned, not because off-field antics, but because their team didn’t live up to anywhere near all the pre-tour hype. They can’t accept the reality that the Lions game play was oh-so predictable (but for Finn Russel), that they never really looked like scoring a try, and worse, had no game plan that suited their players. And this was most evident in the last game where they enjoyed a massive advantage in the possession and territory stats. WG’s selection policy was disastrous, especially among the backs… this is evident that DVM was the only back to hold his position across all 3 tests. Compare this to the fruit-salad selection of the 3 pivotal positions - Scrumhalf, Flyhalf and Fullback. The reality is that honest reflection instead of looking for a scapegoat, can really be the only option going forward.

There is often a lot of spectacle around these big test matches....with a enthesis on "around". Due to the "high stakes" nature of these matches the actual game play on the field tends to tight encounters with very little room for error. As a result, they are generally a bit dull....fantastic quality....but dull. The main exception to the rule is NZ games, because " in New Zeeland... they are good at the ruggas".

I liked this video a lot. Your sentiments contrasted what the thoughts are here in SA. There can be no doubt that even here, the games were perceived as being boring. However, because we won, it didn't matter so much. Overall, whether Rassie is wrong or not for the video being released, the general sense is he is the coach that has the largest public support for as long as I can remember. Do we idolize him? No, we know he has the ability to do great things and say the things that are on his mind. We respect him for that. Besides, he won: 2019 Rugby Championship, the world cup, and now the Lions Tour. Gatlin is on the back of a horrible run with the Chiefs in NZ and even though taken Wales to new high's doesn't necessarily have the same pedigree.
The question that is often overlooked by you Northern Hemisphere punters is the effect Gatlin had on the first test by drawing into question the integrity of an official. Now, if he hadn't done that, would we have seen a different result in the first test? I don't know, but he did have a big impact. What makes Rassie's rant so egregious was his rant was via video while Gatlin's was via the press. Not much is being made of what Gatlin said when his "rant" (for the lack of a better word), because it went through the press, which seems more acceptable. Goodness, then you have the class act of Clive Woodward trying to knock Rassie, forgetting that he did the same thing a few years ago via a PowerPoint presentation to the press.
Putting the Ref's aside as well as the off-the-field circus, what must hurt most is the Lions' players were battle-hardened and with the springboks not playing for nearly two years. The Lions lost to undercooked players. Even being at your very best, the Lions couldn't beat the Springboks at their low...

Some point from another "internet expert".
    1) this lions tour was held without supporters and the supporters make a huge difference. The games lack atmosphere because there was one in the grounds.
    2) the tour got almost no headline media coverage as the matches themselves were locked behind a paywall in the UK, and had to compete against the friggen Olympics (which also suffered because of no crowds).
    3) The boks are accused of playing boring rugby when they've score the most tried at the most recent RWC, and every try on this Lions tour was off the backline plays. The Lions scored 2 tries by grinding it out.
    4) The Boring Boks scored only 3 points less than the AB did against the Lions in 2017. 3 point I guess makes a series much more interesting.
    5) Most of the complaints against the Boks are that their defence is too good. I find that an amazing complaint.
    6) The Rassie vid was overkill but I agree would not have happened without the Gatland TMO bollocks.
    7) The Video calls to attention several almost meaningless problems but 3 red card offences. Things so dangerous they can affect players careers. WR should have taken steps before Rassie did. That officiated wasn't acceptable.
Long story short: The Tour will go down as "contentious" in a difficult era, and probably largely forgotten about in time.

Heres the thing... World Rugby screwed up when they never had a contingency plan and appointed a South African TMO, Warren Gatland then opened the door to criticizing WR and "influencing" the TMO in the first test and Rassie looked at the open door and kicked it down. Obviously what Rassie did was wrong, and obviously it shouldn't be allowed to happen again, but it has opened the door to honest discussions about how WR handles referees and communicates with teams/coaches/managers and the public. There is nothing wrong with Nick Berry and i don't think anyone looks back at the game with anger toward him (I hope), the failure lies with WR and its important that we talk about it because its not a new issue and World Rugby has ignored the problem for years hoping it would go away. The Boks didn't have a season behind them. They had more or less no game-time before this tour. The Lions' players did. Everything on the Boks' side was calculated to slow things down as much as possible to give the players time to catch their breath. So, in summary, the Boks (including Rassie) did exactly what they had to do to win. They created doubt and slowed everything down. Their psychological game simply worked better than Gatland's. Obviously, Lions fans will be upset about that. South Africa for once completely messed with their heads. That's where the tour was lost -- superior mind games, which is basically manipulation. @alastairnewman1233 3 года назад

@NGJ, this opinion may appear a bit strange and you'd be forgiven not understanding it. But let's start from the beginning. You started to hit the nail on the head referring to Rassie's hour long video being a Political Checkmate by he and then Siya confirming that the captain had not been respected.
If Covid hadn't intervened, I have a very strong feeling that SA Rugby wanted to focus on the strength of diversity in the South African game. And gently, without thrusting it down so many throats, reflect on the history of the game in South Africa and how (for the past 20 years) SA has actually been playing a weakened form of the game. Weakened, because it did not enjoy the full integrated diversity which it enjoys now and which had never existed in the South African game before 1994.
Remember, the IRB went ahead with Lions, All Blacks, England, Ireland and Puma tours when the Gleneagles agreement was in place. That sports boycott was because apartheid policies created multiple rugby boards (SARF, SARA etc). And with frankly very little assistance internationally and internally, the SA game has been forced to transform to include everyone.
If you had visited South Africa in the 70s and 80s and had the fortune to see the entire game structure in South Africa, you wouldn't only have been impressed by the massive stadiums like Ellis Park, Newlands and others. You would have seen thousands of enthusiastic games on rough township fields and barefoot men playing on stoney, undulating pastures in the rural countryside. If there was any proof that it takes a particular type of spirit to play this game, the proof would have been found in all of these other places, which is so different to anywhere else in the world (except, perhaps the Pacific Islands). And if Rugby is to grow, Rassie and Siya are of the opinion that World Rugby should be tapping into that spirit in other communities around Africa and other parts of the world.
So I don't think it was Gatland's whinge about a South African TMO which stirred his hour long video. It was the undercurrent of prejudice, alluding to a "rough" game played by South Africans, put out by the foreign press and backed by pronouncements by many in the Lion's camp. And then to top it off - the clear absence of respect shown to Siya Kolisi by the full on-field refereeing staff in the first test.
South African rugby's (SARU) history has a great deal of social issues which it is not proud of. And there is scant evidence that the international rugby world did anything about it. But the South African rugby community has discovered the rich opportunities associated by embracing diversity and we now have a team which reflects that. It wasn't for Siya to point out that a certain amount of prejudice informed the refereeing decisions in the first test, but someone had to do it. That person was Rassie and well it should have been him.
It's very difficult to make a point like he did and not be accused of political manipulation - indeed his message wasn't political at all! It was - "let's treat everyone fairly in this game!" - and quietly pointing that out in the silent halls of power doesn't do the message justice.
Ask yourself, would Francois Pienaar or John Smit been treated by the rugby officials in the same manner as Siya was in that test? All three were World Cup champions! And in a game which is a spectacle and compelling because it includes people of every body size and physique, there is no place for intended or unintended prejudice.
Only good will come from what Rassie did. I don't feel it was a tactic. Well..... maybe a little bit. Erasmus does have a devious mind - that's why it's cool to support his side.

If the sport of Rugby Union wants fewer penalties,
action that ends in quality tries - NOT professional fouls
and games settled by the players - NOT difficult refereeing decisions inevitably being incorrectly called,
then many 'reactive' laws - rather than 'proactive' in foresight laws - need to be scrapped,
in favour of action brought in with full conviction.
Like in many sports, various forms official manipulating goes on.
How does it be put to a firm full-stop?
Well, rather than half-heartedly trying to deal with player wrongs,
    if a player does something very unfortunate, no cards;
the ref says "Go!" and the player has ten seconds to completely vanish from the pitch, or for every 11th, 12th, 13th second in failure to comply, that player spends an hour cleaning sewers.
Not only does this remove the glorification that is the sean bean,
the professional foul will be seen as a game loser - NOT winner.
Then offer team captains with more players on the pitch (due to opposing wrongdoing) the option of 8-vs-8 uncontested scrums
to punish the need for such sanction by creating overlaps in the player's absence.
Another aspect of the game that has gone completely downhill in the 21st century is too many subs.
Yes, if a player gets seriously injured,it's in everyone's interest that he/she leaves the pitch ASAP and is replaced,
but as a certain former England centre,
who correctly predicted South Africa as "dark horses" for the 2019 RWC after that 20-11 defeat in Cardiff, November 2018,
has recently said that Rugby Union teams should be able to field a bench of 8/9 reserve players,
but only 3 may participate in one single game.
This would rubberstamp against any lingering temptation for coaches to instruct players to commit professional fouls
(that ruin great tries being scored) by the fact that fewer subs could share the workload burden of the starting XV, as the fear of losing players to injury would effectively stop tactical subs altogether.
With this, more twenty-two-to-twenty-two tries being attempted
and slower, less durable players being exposed more clearly, in favour of quick, imaginative play,
leads established entirely through penalty-kick accumulation could be wiped out by just one moment of sheer team magic.
This wouldn't necessarily end the conservative nature of rugby,
but simply make the tactical on-field nature of the game more meaningful and worthy of viewers' loyalty and concentration -
knowing 0-9 can become 7-9 in a flash.
It would also change the culture of beating opponents for the right methods, not wrong/unfortunate -
something which would make introducing the sport to young people a more appealing/rewarding duty, in schools and in clubs.

Liked and subbed as soon as I saw you acknowledged that Rassie's video wouldn't have happened without Gatland's shit. One thing though, you acknowledge Rassie as a genius, and then succumb to the doublethink that so many Lions fans did: you believe Jaco Johan is Rassie, even though it would be literally the most obvious, dumbest move to make to name your burner account with your first name as a last name and give it practically no followers. Not very characteristic of a genius, now, is it? Almost as if Jaco Johan isn't Rassie Erasmus...

I will never understand why do Anglos care so much about a series of Barbarians games every four years. Everyone was whining over the refs of a couple of All-Star matches, JFC!
All I care about is that they robbed us of Kwagga Smith, Cheslin Kolbe and Rosko Specman in the Olympics, hope at least they got paid properly. I don't think this tour happening was a miracle, definitely felt more like a curse, lol.

Hiya mate, I loved this, you are clearly a big rugby fan and you articulated a lot of my thoughts and emotions about this series. The only thing I would be careful about is the use of the word "genius", particularly when it is applied to pragmatism. The boks are incredibly brave, incredibly aggressive, generally defensive and they look to intimidate and suffocate the opposition. There is nothing wrong with that, and it challenges the opposition to innovate (just look at NZ).
The only "genius" we saw was, apart from Kolbe, when Finn took the field with 30 minutes to go in the first half, unbridled by his coaches, and simply played what was in front of him. Unfortunately, Gatland got to him at half time (I have this on good record) and we moved again towards sludge, negativity and supposed "professionalism".

I still don't understand why Gatland didn't just play to his player's strengths though? We as South Africans normally scream at our players through the telly of they make mistakes rather than the ref most of the time and we get that sometimes mistakes are made in officiating, but bloody hell that first test was a disaster. Anyway, the last test was just incredible! Lions played very, very well! Shame they didn't take it home this time it was really theirs for the winning

I was never good in the first place to be ruined. It was always crap unfortunately. South African rugby is just unadulterated thuggery with very little rugby skill.

When in doubt, blame the referees because it's always their fault when your team loses

Gatland open up the Pandora box with his comment before the first test, then Rassie responded and gave the Springboks the upper hand by backing the ref into the corner and taking the pressure off his players. The game was slow because Rassie knows how Gatland likes to play against The springboks that's why I think the game was so similar to the 2019 semi final against Wales. The series was a series of tug of war between the two teams and I understand your frustration but you need to take look at it from another preceptive. A bit like the 2019 final people really forget how good the SA defense is (that's why lions could only scored twice in 3 games) and how the SA don't play open rugby until they fully break down the other team. So it was a tight contest till the end. it's still early and everyone emotion is still running high but I think a lot simpler than what everyone else is making into.....The boks to their opportunity and the lions didn't.

I reckon the IRB wanted the series to go to a situation where the 3rd test would be the decider in order to maximise profits. So by their calculation the Lions would need to win the first test because they considered SA to be the stronger side. Thus Nic Berry ensured the result of the first test. No matter how you cut it, his decisions were based on alterior motives. You cant tell me for one second that he could have got so much wrong. Its laughable that people turn a blind eye to this nonsense. Its been going on for a while too and not just to SA, so im glad Rassie did what he did because other coaches are going to follow suit until the IRB's agenda gets exposed.

It's intriguing how we sport fans rate offence so high. We look at defence as some party pooper to our enjoyment of Sport.
Pretty clear why at some point in our existence, we just had to see that lion feast on that spring--- I mean gladiator. To us ad a species, a human defying the odds and defeating a lion is boring.
I had the same dull feeling as the well known turgid playing Germany put seven past step over ball juggling soccer gods Brasil in Brazil, which was very annoying.
We can only hope that those negative playing, big, slow and creative ladant Springboks will change their playing style so that other rugby teams can score tries easily and we the fans can enjoy rugby.

Mate you sound like a girl who has a massive crush on you and finally asks you out, and when you reject her she starts pointing out things that are wrong with you.
Can you imagine the bs you guys up North would be spewing had England won the World Cup and the Lions edged this series.
There'd be zero mention of game play.
That sad music suited your sob story well.
I've been watching France very closely the last 2 years, they play AMAZING , they play amazing rugby and got all my favorite players in that team, France have won NOTHING in the last 2 years.. Nothing.
Should the Boks play like France. GTFOH
