Just thought id let you and others know that it does matter which way the thrust bearings go in they have a lead/tin/copper sometimes called "white metal" over layer that needs to be in contact with the side that rotates and most are just metal on the other side. If put in the other way round they wont last too long.

I had no idea what that metal bit was, but this video cleared that right up. One of these bearings wore down a groove in the main bearing cap and then dislodged to the point it seized my engine. I'm stubborn AF, and I like to fix things so I took the whole engine apart to find that. Daily driver, oil level was good, recently changed...
I am rebuilding my a20a3 honda engine and have gotten to the thrust bearings, not sure what they were used for, but now i know. The book says and I quote "thrust washer thickness is fixed and must not be changed either by grinding or shimming. Thrust washers are installed with grooved sides outward" so the groves face outwards from the bearing housing, example @ 4:50. Thanks for the video eric!

@binnsh you should start it with clutch pedal pushed down because it it easier for a starter to turn the motor when it's disconnected from the gearbox. Especially in cold winters.
@binnsh 99% of cars out there have a clutch switch that will not allow the starter to engage until the clutch is pushed down, so unless that switch has been bypassed it's not going to start until you press the pedal.
I am having low oil pressure light trouble, manual transmission, I deleted the dampener, I can make the light go out, at 50, by depressing the clutch a little, thanks so much I will test it, using your method.
My question, because I can't seem to find the answer anywhere, is which direction do the thrust bearings go? Grooves in so that they touch the block? Or out so they touch the crank? At 4:50 you show a one piece bearing thrust washer and the grooves are out so they would touch the crank. I'm just curious because I can't seem to find an answer and there were no guides with the thrust washers I bought.
Appreciate this: I had my engine rebuilt recently and one of things they did was add upgraded LS1 thrust bearings. Blew two pistons, two rods and cracked crankshaft. I assume that might be why the crank borked along with the rod bearings.
just today i put back on the pistons and oil pan on my 1987 lancia thema 2.0 turbo, i didn't remove the crankshaft, tomorrow i'll check for any movement of the flywheel .. thanks eric ;)

How does the orientation of the oil grooves on the thrust bearings go? is it outside or inside of the block? Just bring back old memories since I am just a DIY. Those bearings also provide an intermediary surface for the crank to spin freely against while supporting it so there isn't wear between the crank and the actual block.
Awesome video. How often do you see these bearings go bad on a daily driver honda? I ask because I've never seen It happen with my hondas and I've taken them 300k or more.
So the only thing that keeps those thrust bearings in the block is the recess in the block and the crank? Thats a very interesting design. I've never had the bottom end of one of those apart before. Do you think that is a better design that the one piece main bearing and thrust bearing combination?
Thanks for this, i was going over spare engine in my shed, taking off the flywheel i noticed the crank moving back and forwards, hence googling "crankshaft end play" brought me here. So had like 1/4 of an inch play. On removing the sump i found a pair of mangled thrust bearings in the bottom of the engine and some nasty grind makes on the crankshaft, so safe to say thats focked. :D

Guess Honda isn't perfect either as you do plenty of repairs on them. I assume the kids hot rod Hondas with higher resistance pressure plates put more pressure on those bearings then?
Hi Eric, why that Civic run out of oil? Please tell us. For me , look alike that leaked oil seal crankshaft at Flywheel , I can see black oil wetting the Gear box. Correct me if I'm wrong.
@dav8388 My 5 speed manual 1987 Honda Accord LX never had this switch. I just put the transmission in neutral and then started it so I didn't have to hold the clutch pedal down with it in gear you normally would. .

I Have a CA18DET thats out of my car now because I'm doing body repairs. I would like to know if its advisable to install new connecting and main bearings on my existing mains, rod caps and rods? No I have not spun a bearing or anything, but I would like to know if i an change them as the engine is out and noting the age of the engine.

Yes it can have that effect. When the car is cold the oil is thicker and harder to squeeze out from between the two pieces of metal so it keeps spinning. As the oil warms up it flows easier and then you get metal to metal.
I've been thinking that manual transmission cars should be started in neutral, foot off clutch so there is no load on the thrust bearing until oil pressure builds. Your thoughts?
You could by pass the clutch switch to obtain this, I had an old chevy 1960 with an inline 6 and a powergide trans that had the neutral switch bypassed and you could start in in gear gotta really keep your eyes open lol
like the video Eric my question is what if your thrust washers are in the oil pan and did I lose oil or oil pressure to that area. Worried that area didn't get enough oil where the rod bearings might be ruined. Tks for your time and keep the video's coming.

Sometimes the air intake sucks some in, especially if the car has ever been driven through water. I've seen people take their 4x4's through water and then the engine hydrolocks.

Awesome explanation. I had a problem with front crankshaft oil seal. We had to use a lot of force to remove timing belt pulleys. Finally we re placed the seal but then when the crank shaft moves backwards and forwards slightly, the seal comes out spilling lots of oil.Could this lateral movement of the be a sign thrust washers are worn. Car has power and starts well. Pls help.
Take a dial guage and place it at the end of the shaft and push it to see how much its walking, if its more than 0.005 your thrust bearing is gone and you need to attend to it otherwise you riskibg damaging the crank shaft.
What design changes have been incorporated into engine design to beaf up the added thrust bearing demand and lack of lubrication to the bearings since the mandatory clutch engagement was mandated for engine start-up? Also, what's the average life expectancy of thrust bearings since that mandate was imposed and how does it compare to the previous design?
I have a Questing... My old man has a Ford Transit "07 2.2Tdci motorhome... When it is very cold it wont start... Just makes a clicking noise... @playstation2bigs mobil 1 oil is pretty good, all the mobile one oil is fully synthetic, i use castrol in my car, mainly cause it is slightly cheaper than mobile one, and i don't really want to put full synthetic oil at a higher price for my car that has 350k miles and knocks.
I need to take out the camshaft bearing on a 1985 toyota van 3Y-EC, but I do not want to remove the base pan of the the engine. Is there a tool to hold the hydraulic lifters in place so it don`t drop into the base pan?
I would imagine that the extra slop in the rotating assembly would cause a lot more damaging harmonics/vibrations as well? Could damage the block and crank eventually I would imagine. Particularly in a high RPM application
@mikeisgonzo This is the first time I hear about this. But I must admit I don't know that much about cars. I googled the switch, and read it was invented by GM. Could it be more common in American cars than others? I live in Europe, and have driven only European and Japanese cars, and none of them have had this safety switch. Method of using the starter to nudge the car of the railway tracks is even introduced in driving schools, doesn't work with the switch.
Should I replace the thrust bearing? I compare the old and new one with digital measurement, I couldn't see any different or wears...Please let me know. Thanks..
Well, that's another reason why I NEVER push the clutch in when shifting gears. I only use the clutch for 1st gear and reverse and starting the engine if it has one of those stupid switches on it.
Will a bad thrust bearing cause a sharp, loud tapping sound and a flex plate to fatigue, crack and break apart at the center around the bolt pattern? My stock 27 year old flexplate broke, the replacement flexplate showed cracking and began making tapping sounds after a while from soft tapping to loud that come and go at idle but are very loud under throttle pressure while cruising. Any tips would help.
hey Eric question I'm about to start replacing my main bearings in my 2.7 dodge and was wondering could the thrust cause the crank to shake or have a airplane motor sound from the bottom end.the thrust bearings on mine are separate pieces just like what you was working any advice would be great
What about automatic I think this may be the culprit for my sensor going out it's happened twice already maybe a bad sensor I dont know any tips on how to check it

Oh and do most engines only have the crank supported by one thrust bearing like the pair on this engine?
@playstation2bigs good quality oil will prolong the life of any bearing, also keeping up on regular oil changes help even more

@albertonex19 There is a specific tolerance for crank end play when building the engine. Specific to that engine/build/crank/block.

My 2004 Acura TL wouldn't start and the Acura dealer said the engine thrust washers had shifted while seated in the holding spot.

Will a bad thrust bearing cause a sharp, loud tapping sound and a flex plate to fatigue, crack and break apart at the center around the bolt pattern? My stock 27 year old flexplate broke, the replacement flexplate showed cracking and began making tapping sounds after a while from soft tapping to loud that come and go at idle but are very loud under throttle pressure while cruising. Any tips would help.

hey Eric question I'm about to start replacing my main bearings in my 2.7 dodge and was wondering could the thrust cause the crank to shake or have a airplane motor sound from the bottom end.the thrust bearings on mine are separate pieces just like what you was working any advice would be great
What about automatic I think this may be the culprit for my sensor going out it's happened twice already maybe a bad sensor I dont know any tips on how to check it
