The C4472 would probably be a good purchase for you. They do tend to be a bit unpredictable in that they sporadically reject previously fine cartridges though. They can take enormous black cartridges though so are pretty cheap to run. The D1660 however is pretty expensive to run at present. The HP 640c was a good little machine but us a little long in the tooth now and the recycled cartridges in circulation are starting to show their age and are a little less reliable.

I can't think of a way to make it wireless. However if it is attached to a computer that is generally on, you may want to consider setting it up with Google Cloud Print. This way you can print to it from other computers/phones as long as you are connected to the internet. I hope this helps.

How odd. Brother inkjet printers are one of the few machines out there that physically look for the cartridges. If this is happening consistently it is likely to be a sensor problem with the printer sadly.

It would depend upon the model. Some are very recommendable and some cost and absolute fortune to run. Do you have any particular printers in mind?
If you are using Firefox you may want to check out Print-Edit add on. You can even edit what content you want to print using this.
