I grew up 20 minutes from there and went to his comics shop many times as a kid. That was 30 years ago and he was a legend then too. He's a very kind man and even gave me a free action figure to go with my spiderman comics that I bought. Funny enough this insanity actually brought back good memories. A lot of people misunderstand what freedom of speech is. It doesn’t mean you can say whatever you want in any and every setting.
I actually just means THE GOVERNMENT can’t infringe on your speech, but in other context, such as in the workplace, or on a private platform, your speech may be legally subject to some restricts.
Now, with all that said…a county council, or similar, legislative proceeding open to the public, the PRECISELY the kind of situation where “freedom of speech” is, at its core, most relevant to how it’s understood colloquially.
In short, the people trying to tell this man he can’t say what he wants are the EXACT REASON why the first amendment (“freedom of speech”) exists in the first place.
So yeah, your job, or a social media platform may be able have rules for what speech is allowed, but no one who is representative for government, in any capacity or role, can tell you what you can and cannot say.

If you want to teach abstract learning, send them to a Montessori, which requires tuition
If you want to teach theater and dance, go to a school of the arts, which requires tuition
And as it should be, if you want to teach about gender/sexuality, there should be a school for that as well. Require tuition.
Add the same caveat to this that you would add to the WNBA, or the WPGA, or the Special Olympics. Ultimately, it seems like they want to be special, so give them their own specialized system, which they have to pay into, such as a private school, which requires tuition.
