- Ultrafiltration is the process where the blood is filtered to allow some substances to enter the nephron to get rid of waste products. In exams, they often ask students to explain how it works - You will need to illustrate the filters in the walls of the glomerulus and Bowman's capsule and explain how they prevent the loss of blood cells and plasma proteins from the blood while allowing other substances (eg. water, urea) to leave the blood and enter the nephron to become the filtrate.

Hi, this video was really helpful, but im stuck. It says in the ocr biology textbook that because of the afferent arteriole being bigger it forces tissue fluid out of the capillary wall, is it this tissue fluid that contains the glucose and ions that then gets selectively reabsorpbed?
Yes exactly. Due to the difference in the lumen sizes of the arterioles, the pressure generated causes the fluid to be forced out of the capillaries. It then becomes tissue fluid, and in this case the filtrate (they are the same thing in this case!). So yes it contains glucose, amino acids, vitamins and ions etc... until it gets to the proximal convoluted tubule where these things get reabsorbed back into the bloodstream.

Yes kind of, they make up the epithelial layer and act as a filter :)

I'm an O' level student, but this really helped me understand the concentration gradients involved in ultra filtration, as well as selective reabsorption.
Just one question; why does the salt concentration increase by the time urine is excreted? Salts are reabsorbed back into the blood from the Loop of Henle, so that means the salt concentration in the filtrate decreases, doesn't it?
If you are constantly removing substances such as water from the bundle of capillaries into the bowman capsule, aren't you decreasing the water potential of the blood. If so does this drive the reabsorption process.
Another question: If you have a high water potential in the blood does taking all the water from the bundle of capillaries decrease it even more. I think maybe I am overthinking but just want to be sure.
You're correct. Removal of water from the bloodstream decreases the blood's water potential, which may have an effect on the reabsorption of water itself. It may have an effect on the reabsorption of other substances due to the filtration pressure (higher pressure in the filtrate due to the high water content).
For the second question, you're again correct in the thinking, though it doesn't seem to be separate from your first question?

Just to confirm, at 4:00 did you mean the amine group? Because deamination occurs in the liver, the main waste product from deamination would be the amine group right? And the Keto acid would go to the lungs. Therefore, the amino acid wouldn’t continue on no? Thanks
