Yeah been learning a catalogue of Dave riffs lately deff has some crazy chord shapes going on and until u really play them ya don’t notice some of the funky little runs he throws in I’ve gained a new appreciation for sure.

He has 3 brains! Head brain, left hand brain, and right hand brain! All do something differently. Its amazing!
Dave’s music is on a whole different level of awesomeness. It’s so much fun learning all of the little tricks he does on guitar. He should get a lot more credit than he does for his guitar playing!

@@jpc3984 He definitely deserves more. I’ve been playing guitar for most of my life and when talking with other guitarists about the best players Dave isn’t usually a name that comes up. It’s always the obvious ones like Hendrix, Clapton, SRV, etc. People assume it’s always about solos or being flashy. Dave has a subtle guitar presence that often sounds simple yet is super complicated. Then add singing ON TOP of playing those crazy chords/melodies. He’s insanely talented. People look at me like I’m nuts when I say he’s one of my top favorite guitarists lol.

Dave Matthews is nowhere near an elite guitarist. There are more superior guitarists than you would ever want to count who are not even professional musicians. Jerry Garcia, Richie Blackmore, Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page, Carlos Santana, Robert Fripp, Jorma Kaukonen, Zal Cleminson, Tom Verlaine, Steve Vai, Frank Zappa, Adrian Belew, Jan Akkerman, Michael Karoli, Ron Wood, Steve Hackett, Eddie Van Halen, Allan Holdsworth, Duane Allman, Tony Iommi, Buck Dharma, Gary Moore, Lindsey Buckingham, Eddie Hazel, Mick Ronson, Chris Karrer, Brian May, Alex Lifeson, Pete Townshend, Leslie West, Joni Mitchell, Robbie Robertson, Billy Gibbons, Mark Knopfler, John McLaughlin, Robin Trower, Randy California, Pye Hastings, David Gilmour, Steve Howe, J.J. Cale, Tony Bourge, Joe Walsh, Rory Gallagher, Phil Manzanera, Jerry Cantrell, Joe Satriani, Alvin Lee, Martin Barre, Joey Santiago, Gary Green, John Goodsall, Franco Mussida, Gary Duncan, and John Cipollina are/were in a completely different league,and that's just naming a few.
@@DMTsmoke do you play guitar? Dave has some of the hardest rhythms. Most of the people you list just play scales / solos and then power chords. Some won’t even play guitar while they are singing. I’m not belittling anyone. But you have to recognize Dave is one of the best rhythm players out there.
I learned to play a few of Dave’s songs, which I have now forgotten. Tried this one a million times. Never successfully

if you try to play it like how Dave plays it's really hard, he's got huge hands so he can play some insane chords. try to modify it so you can reach the chords and it becomes relatively easier.

I think The Stone is a bit tougher to play, but outside of the intro for a brief moment while learning it, Tripping Billies isnt too bad. He does make it look pretty easy here though.

You have to play a lot of his stuff to start stretching out your hands and getting them used to the odd chord formations. But after a while you get there. What's more difficult than just "playing it" is doing it as clean and as uptempo as he does, now that is something only Dave can do lol. I'm still working on it 20 years in myself!

I was trying to learn to play guitar and my teacher asked me what guitarists inspired you? I told him Dave Matthews that i want to play his songs. He just laughed and said good luck i cant play half his stuff and I've been playing for years. Love your music Dave.

Crash during the summer of 1996 was basically on repeat. Glad I got to see you live back then over a dozen times. One of my top 5 albums of all time. So incredibly underrated as a guitarist.
I totally agree how underrated he is a guitar player, especially for someone whos tried to play his music in the past and epically failed. The more I think about it though, i dont think he wants to be known and can be known for his guitar work because his lyrics stand out more. Thoughts?
@@dansuede2899 his lyrics are definitely unique. Also his voice singing those lyrics. The band as a whole was made up of extremely talented musicians. Different instruments coming together to make uniquely great music. His unique style of guitar chords is icing on the cake though. Stretching across 6 or 7 frets to have that slight variation in sound where it could be played much simpler. When I play DMB on guitar, I play the simple way.
