For the non welsh speakers turn the captions on. YT might say Welsh but they are in English. As a learner I shall be listening to this a lot in the next week. Diolch.

My great-grandmother, who spoke better English than most white folks, refused to speak it in her home or to respond to us if we spoke English. We learned Cherokee, our native language. As Great-Grandmother told us, "If you don't speak your language, you don't know who you are."

Did she made the children speak it back to her? That seems to do the trick that separates passive bilinguals (only able to understand) to full bilinguals (speak and understand). Hope Cherokee is still strong in your family!

@@RcsN505 She taught us to speak our language, played name games to help us remember words, taught us songs, but mostly used language immersion. Most of us spoke some, but around her and out other elders we became more proficient.

I respect your point of view, but I was born in Wales, I don't speak the language, so consequently I was shunted, ignored and felt isolated. I know who I am, I'm a human being.
