  • I made a coffee table out of two salvaged english walnut slabs and used through tenons attach the slab legs. This was a bit of a race against time as I had a deadline to wrap this one up, but I am really happy with how it came out!

    Lovely work! I’m an amateur woodworker and I love the simplicity of this piece.
    Two questions:
    1. What did you sand this to?
    2. How did you finish it?

    • @CoffeyCustomBuilds

      It's a very simple and elegant piece. I sanded everything to 180 except the top to 220. I finished with Rustic Lumber Finish. It's my preferred hard wax oil finish. There's a link to it in the description.

    Overall I like it. The through tenon is a nice detail. Personally, I'd have preferred the tiny amount of epoxy to fill the defects over the patchwork. Only other change I'd make would be relief cuts on the bottom of the legs. As is those legs will work fine on a carpeted floor, but for any hard flooring it'll be almost impossible to get to sit flat. Foam pads would work, but I also like the look of even a small relief cut.

    Looks great. Wondering why u didn’t throw in a stretcher or angled out the “legs”. Pretty much all of the compression is picked up by the shoulders of the tenons. Would love to know what ur thoughts on that? 🙏

    • @CoffeyCustomBuilds
      @CoffeyCustomBuilds  7 месяцев назад

      The stretcher would help with compression. That would help with racking or sway. But it is not an issue here as the tenon is 1" thick and 1.25" tall. That combined with the immense glue surface give an incredibly strong joint. Also, woods compression strengths are VERY high. It's one of it's most redeeming qualities from an engineering standpoint.

    Great looking table, I wasn't sure on the through tennon legs but you definitely sold me on them! Quick question if you don't mind, what is the blue handle you have on the white pad for the Rubio, how does it hold onto the pad? Thanks a bunch!

    • @CoffeyCustomBuilds
      @CoffeyCustomBuilds  7 месяцев назад +1

      Thank you! Big fan of the though tenon's! It's a handle for applying using scotch Brite pads. I put the link in the description. I also didn't use Rubio. I use Rustic Lumber Finish and have for over a year and it's great. Also put a link in the description for that.
