  • In the world of automobiles, the 1960s and 1970s were strange times. Whatever their faults, the '60s and '70s have left their mark on automotive history. In fact, the American automotive landscape drastically changed between 1960 and 1979.
During that time, most car manufacturers changed their philosophies. Manufacturers downsized and introduced a wide variety of new models. However, one trend that was evident during the time was the rise of luxury models. Considering their cars lacked power and performance, it appeared that car manufacturers were focusing on convenience and interior features. This is the story on the most memorable American luxury cars from the ’60s and 70s.
This is the story on the most memorable luxury cars you wished your mom and dad owned.
    Enjoy!

That interior of the Chrysler New Yorker Sedan looked like the inside of a Coffin or something else you would find in a funeral home. IF they made a New Yorker today the interior would have graffiti and smell like urine.

Growing up I loved my Father's Buick Electra whale with its massive crushed velour seats and large windows with no side pillar between the front and back. On long trips riding in the back it was like a limousine with a very high seatback for your head and it was so wide and roomy. This car also would lay a scratch and had tons of low end torque. Surprisingly it was a very trouble free car and lasted about 180,000 miles which was super for a car of the time. I think the engine was so well matched that it didn't have to work hard.

The list of cars my neighbor had is painfully awesome. He was gifted with electronics and computers and in the early days of the internet in the 1990s he invented a few things and opened his own ISP. By the time he was twenty he was making more money than both my parents combined. He ended up buy my house from my parents a few years later and lived there for at least 10 years, I'm not sure now as I moved away myself after college. He owned in order by what he bought, 1969 GTO Judge, 1970 Chevelle SS, 1970 Plymouth Road Runner Superbird, and a 1983 Buick Grand National. Those cars effected me seriously and I've been a gear head ever since. He sold the Superbird to some famous actor I was told but I'm not sure who it was. The GTO was bought by a player on the St Louis Cardinals. Might have been Jim Edmonds but I'm not sure, been over 20 years ago now. I own a 1972 Chevelle myself. My by far favorite "object" I've ever owned. I did get one ride in the Grand National and it was impressively fast.

I came close to owning an old boat of a Lincoln but I got blocked by my mom. We were visiting family in PA and my uncle offered to sell it to me for $200. 1979 Continental Town Car with the 460 V8, dark blue with matching leather interior. Absolutely gorgeous old car. I had the cash on me and was all set to buy it off of him, but I wasn't 18 yet and my mom said it wasn't a practical car. I was not a happy camper for the rest of that trip. Sadly, my uncle died before I was old enough to make the decision for myself and all his cars were auctioned off.

The cars my folks had when I was growing up were a '71 Datsun 510 coupe (dad's car) and mom's '73 Chevrolet Vega wagon, complete with fake wood siding. Dad was very knowledgeable with cars, so he kept both immaculately maintained (the Vega never overheated and was thus a reliable car). When my grandfather was selling his '73 Pontiac Grand Le Mans wagon, dad bought it as the Datsun was almost ten years old and starting to rust away. A Toyota Corolla crushed itself against it while it was parked on the street; the Pontiac suffered no damage, the Toyota was a write-off. The most memorable car they had was mom's '80 Civic Wagon, which replaced the Vega. It was a wonderful car, running smooth and reliably and we never felt a lack of luxury. We'd listen to the radio and I still remember those songs. It got replaced years later with a Subaru GL wagon and the Pontiac with an '85 Toyota (Hilux) pickup, but I was getting older by then.

The earliest car I remember as a kid was a 1962 Ford Country Squire Wagon. I'll never forget the color of that wagon. She was black with the woodgrain sides, and red n white interior.
The next ride the folks picked up was a 67 Pontiac Ventura sedan. That was a huge gold car with black interior. My Pop was driving home from work one day and drove through a puddle at an intersection. Turns out it was a broken water main and the roadway collapsed under his Pontiac. He jumped out of her before she sank up to the rear doors! The insurance company didn't total her, but she needed a bunch of work done to make her road worthy again.
Then came a 69 Pontiac Catalina wagon. I took my driver's license test in that monster, and passed on the first try 🙂
Then the coolest car of the bunch...a 72 Firebird Esprit. I tried to talk my Pop into a White TA sitting on the showroom floor, but he wouldn't go for it. That F-bird ended up being my first car five years later.
    I changed everything about that Firebird. Here's the list of work I did;
1970 GP 400 engine and Trans
78 TA interior out of a wreck(as much as would fit into my 72)
    72 Functional Formula hood
TA fender flairs and rear spoiler
Gold snowflake rims from 78 TA
I had the Bird painted midnight blue metallic with the saddle interior.
New stereo system too with the 6x9 Jensen speakers in the rear.
There wasn't anything on the road that looked like my car in my hometown. Once in a while I would see a special edition black n gold TA driving around and we waved at each other 👋
    Great memories

Being a 17 year old new driver like any healthy young boy I tended to driver alittle crazy myself. But what ever we dished out the 98 took without question. Not to mention that it was a beautiful car to look at and driver. I'm proud to say that I still own it to this day. Even after 250,000 mi the 98 starts right up and can cruise lazily along at 80mph. My most memorable Mercury was the 1964 Mercury [Super] Marauder code name: S-55, with a 406-cid/405-hp [Super]. Four Speed Top-loader transmission ready to race, NASCAR (Holman/Moody) ran these babies in open competition that even gave some Ford fits, but the one to have was the tri-pwr 405-horse. From 1962 to 1966 the S-55 was the choice of choices in either 390/330- horse, or 405/385-horse [4-bbl] guise, they were devilish with weight saving techniques (aluminum panels)! Oh... and Merc had an S-22 in their Comet series (1960-1964), that competed with the Falcon/early Mustangs, Chevy's 283-cid Nova's and Malibu's and Dodge's 273-cid Darts. Although the S-22 started out as a trim package and a six cylinder engine, later one could opt for a 260-cid or a 289-cid/271-horse or 306-horse hi po engine by 1964! To give you some perspective a standard 1965 Mustang GT 289-cid only had 210-horse/300-ft-lbs from the factory! I own a 1998 Mustang GT 4.6L/281-225-hp/290-ft/lbs torque!!! I love this stuff!

Ha my mother had a 66 Buick LeSabre too. She loved that land barge, despite its tendency to stall during left turns, wiping out the power steering at the worst possible moment. That behemoth loved to collect water from every puddle and trap it in the frame rails, which would then slosh forward during braking, and aft when accelerating, thus earning the nickname “the rolling bathtub”. The car eventually solved the problem all by itself, compliments of the water which created myriad tiny holes that in the frame rails - behold the self-draining rolling bathtub!

I live cars. And thanks for showcasing these beauties. My father, we had a 55 buick century, a rare car. Then we has a 67 monterey. I used to watch shows like hiway patrol, Hawaii five o, cannon, mannix barnaby jones, fugitive just to watch the latest trends.the mark v, the Imperial, were more chiseled out. That's when they were more of an art form. My all time favorite. I must say is the 99 Olds Aurora, to me that's a car that looks beautiful at any angle. I recall seeing these beauties parked on front of these beautiful hotels, Ceasars Palace, to name a few. I wish they would make them again, with today's technologies. I'm still intrigued how John DeLorean made the 8 lug wheel on the pontiac. Also the power brakes on the 66 park colony. That could send you out the front window. I have like 450 thousand on my 2007 lincoln town car. 4.6 Bullitt proof engine. But I love them all, even if it's a stage coach. With a small block chevy..lol. at any rate I loved your presentation. I grew up with the GM front wheel drive twins in the driveway - a piano black over deep burgundy velour '74 Olds Toronado and a butter yellow '73 Cadillac Eldorado - my brother went from a '73 Volks 411 wagon (a POS if there ever was one) to a silver over black '75 Opel Manta (very nice car) and then on to a gold '77 Datsun 280Z - I drove the Toronado as my hand me down starter, then went to a buckskin tan '79 Pontiac notchback sport coupe 305 V8 (factory equipped to look like a baby TransAm) then on to a gold 1980 Triumph TR8. What can I say, we had eclectic tastes and except the 411 Volks, they were all very enjoyable cars. My dad went from a cheesy '71 turd brown Ford LTD to the giant Mopar Chryslers (a '72 powder blue over white New Yorker) and then pitched it all for a midnight blue over tan '75 MB 240 diesel sedan. He freaking adored the 240 and drove it until it almost fell apart. My buddies parents had the his and hers '79 Continental Designer Series, a Bill Blass and the Pucci edition - really nice cars. My 1s brand new car was a Buick Electra Landau coupe 225. I penny pinched, I was able to fully equipped it, for a tidy sum of 9k. My dad had a 76 also, but, he got an Eldorado also fully equipped even with the fuel injection. Big cars were plentiful & bc of the 73 gas crisis, 1 could finagle or walk. They were AWESOME landyachts. A bit thirsty but, mobile living rooms on long trips &, plenty room all around.
Miss em. In 78 got me a MARK V. Gr8 car til time to find parking on the streets. Small sacrifices, well worth it.

My parents drove two classics ….my mom had a 68 Galixie 500 that was just awesome. My dad drove, what I believe to be the prettiest, and most expensive, 1974 Lincoln Towne Coupe. We took many family trips in both and I learned to drive in both as well. My dad would eventually upgrade moms ride to another classic 1977 Mercury Cougar. I’m presently restoring it to its former glory. I wish I that 74 Lincoln!!

Mom drove a '67 Chrysler Newport two-door hardtop from when I was four to thirty-four. I got my first driver's license in it. Before the '67, she had a '62 Newport hardtop.
That's how I became a Chrysler fanatic. I've joked that if I were a smoker, my favorite cigarette brand would be Newport!
Dad was big into Dodge "B" vans. I still have the Winnebago (Dodge B chassis) that they got in '76.

1969 my dad bought a 1967 MGB-GT. In 1972 a new Mercury Montego MX 2 door hardtop. In November of that year a new 1972 Pinto Runabout. Some drunk in a 1967 Ford LTD came by on a Friday night and took out the 62 Chrysler and 67 MGB that were parked on the street. 1976 a new Ford F100 Custom. 1977 a new Mercury Cougar XR-7. In Feb of 1979 one of the first Honda Accord 4 doors in San Jose, California. Rounding off the decade was a mew 1980 Ford F150 after the 76 caught fire while parked. Parents didn't buy a new car for another decade. They bought a 1991 Ford Explorer in November 1990.

My fav family car: a custom ordered 1969 Monaco 500 convertible. I forget the engine size but a 4-barrel carb was the big deal. Red body, White Top, Black Bucket seats (vinyl?) rear split by radio speaker. When it was just me & Dad he would get it up over 100 mph on the open freeway. I LOVED that!! My friends & I would badger him into "laying rubber" & when he'd peel away from the stop we'd squeal & whoop as loud as the tires with the fervour of a Southern Revival.
My FIRST car did NOT lay rubber ...when you hit the gas it went ..."FLUSH" -but I LOVED her: a 73 Sedan DeVille. Harvest-yellow 4-door pillarless. Padded vinyl HT, pale yellow/taupe leather seats. FENDER SKIRTS (I wish cars still had fender skirts), LOAD LEVELLERS, 472 cu in ...JUST SHY OF 5,000 lbs. The glove compartment was so big I always thought it could have come fitted with an optional bar ...The massive glove box door opened flat to make a place to hold things as you went into it on an expedition for "whatever." My thinking was you'd open it & a super high-gloss wood burl tray would slide out onto the back of the compartment door "a la James Bond." In cutouts would stand 2 chilled martini glasses, a bucket of ice and some mini-bottles of one's fav booze or whatever ...Drinking & driving was only "JUST" becoming an issue & it was not "too" unusual for me to have a martini in my right hand, elbow propped comfortably on that great padded rest🙀😹 I've had other more exotic cars but you always remember your FIRST 😉 Thanks for indulging my nostalgia. XoXo

My mom had a 1966 Olds Starfire coupe, think that was the only body style they were available in, during the 70’s and I fondly remember having to go to the Olds dealer with parents to get a part for it in late ‘77 and seeing all the new downsized ‘78 models and as a kid wish we had the (Monza) Starfire so bad but also that smaller Cutlass Cruiser with the two-way tail gate and how sweet it looked with the wood grain vinyl sides and body-color coded rally’s to match!
But in hindsight, I’d take that ‘66 Starfire in a heartbeat today, which by the way met its demise in ‘81 due to an engine fire that totaled it :(
