The issue is never that white women CAN'T wear box braids. It's your hair do as you please. But you need to understand the fact that black women are often shunned, called unkept, unprofessional, lost jobs, aren't hired at all because we wear these styles. While white women are considered edgy or trendy. Recognize your privilege.

People don't talk about culture appropiation if a black person is Catholic or Protestant; people don't talk about culture appropiation if a westener uses arabic numerical system on a daily basis; people don't say it's culture appropiation when a dark skin person ligthens their skin in order to mimic white people; people don't talk about culture appropiation when they use a gun, whose powder is a Chinese invention.

Some black people are justifying being racist by saying all the other races especially whites are racist so now I'm going to do it to you. You can't wear that hairstyle because you are a different race than me. It's gotten quite ridiculous. They went after Bruno Mars because he is not black but performs funk, rhythm and blues, soul and hip hop. The concept of cultural appropriation, it's divisive and exclusionary. It doesn't help innovation. People that are racist, prejudice and bigoted can appear to care about minorities while keeping people of different races from interacting while sharing common interests. Racist people don't want to see anyone from their race embracing the culture of another race or another race embracing anything from theirs. It's a great tool for dividing people. The world would be so boring if we couldn't learn other languages or try different foods, make different kinds of music, wear different styles of clothing. If we try to put restrictions on each other. If we try to control people's creativity and expression. Can you imagine if everyone started restricting everyone about everything? The world would be a horrible place full of restrictions. We'd be walking on eggshells all the time wondering whose culture we'll be accused of appropriating next. An article accused Rihanna of appropriating from Latina culture because of how she did her eyebrows. Also if you are not Latina and wear large hoop earrings.... Latina culture appropriation. This sort of cultural segregation does nothing to bring us together and everything to push us apart.

    • @anonamous6968
      @anonamous6968 6 лет назад +13

I changed it to some. I realize that some people are inclusive and want unity and acceptance. I was just frustrated by the people not being this way. Some people are being divisive, polarizing and exclusionary. Some realize that we are all people and that the millennials that want to wear box braids, are probably not the ones giving black people a hard time. Someone that is fifteen years old doesn't deserve to be punished because of the media not giving credit or because of work policies. Most of the people wanting to wear box braids are mainly young women that appreciate and admire the hairstyle. I can't imagine anyone saying to a black person, "you can't do that because you're black" it would be considered racist. When a black person says you can't do that because you're white, it's just as racist.

That is not true. The definition of a racist person is someone that has prejudice against others of a different race. It has nothing to do with power. I think we can agree that Black people can be prejudice. Here is the dictionary definition.
      rac·ist pronunciation -ˈrāsəst/noun
A person who shows or feels discrimination or prejudice against people of other races.
As an adjective: Showing or feeling discrimination or prejudice against people of other races.
So you see black people can be racist. It is false and misleading to say otherwise.

I believe in the truth. You’re trying to change the definitions of the term racist. (I assume you’re part of the New Left.) You’re encountering not a lack of understanding - people understand all too well what you’re trying to do. Perhaps better than you do. What you’re encountering is a refusal to accept your redefinitions.
Prejudice on the basis of race is racism, as a simple matter of definition.
Some people don't like those definitions, because they want to say racist things without being called a racist.

I think it’s pretty fucked up how people keep commenting on how “white” people need to stop copying “black” people. First of all, stop diversifying them; they are all people (strong melanin pigmentation or not) Secondly, the video was a tutorial and an explanation on how to do this on hair that has a different texture so why is everyone up each other’s ass about race? I think the video served it’s purpose.. as for the comments 🤷🏻‍♀️ Also, just a quick fun fact THERE IS A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SKIN COLOUR AND RACE / ETHNICITY. For example, my skin is white but I’m mostly olive-toned and kind of yellow-y, however my race is mostly European and Hispanic (British Honduran) Anyways, love to all 💜🌎💜🌍💜🌏

Everyone in the comment talking about how its just hair. its not just hair, its cultural appropriation.for white women, these hairstyles are a personal choice rooted in vanity that can be easily removed or washed away, like a beach wave or a high ponytail. There is immense privilege in choosing to wear black hairstyles when it suits one's aesthetic, while also having the ability to opt out of the prejudice associated with these hairstyles in instances when this aesthetic is not deemed acceptable. white women can shield themselves from the negative ramifications and biases surrounding black hairstyles while reaping the rewards, whether financially or otherwise. black women are not granted this privilege and have endured a painful history of attempting to dismantle and erase their personal and cultural identity associated with their natural hair. basically, when a black woman wears box braids or other black hairstyles its deemed as "ghetto" but when a white woman does, its trendy and aesthetic. If you don't see a problem, you're the problem.

I was thinking about replying to some comments but I decided to just make one of my own because this is crazy. I see so many comments saying “white people cant have this hair” or “it don’t look good on her bc she’s white” or “white people copy black people” etc. what I don’t understand is how you never hear nobody saying when black girls flat iron their hair they’re trying to copy us or be like us, or that it don’t look good. But once a white girl wears braids in her hair she’s trying to be black, it literally a hair style, not a color. Also with white people always liking “black people music”. Even if a white person does like black artist, 1 it shouldn’t matter look what year it is. &’ 2 I’ve met plenty of black people that listen to nothing but “white people music” but you never hear us saying stuff like that. It’s 2019 let people live, sorry but braids did not come from just black people, everybody did and does them. The point is it’s 2019, grow up and let people do what they wanna do with their hair, box braids could damage anyone’s hair if they aren’t done the right way.

@Harmony it is. You are completely wrong... Asians but also some European, in the past, used to discriminate people with curly hairs. Especially in Europe (I talk as a European and not a white American), in the middle age until modern era, having long straight hair was considered a sign of good health and "clearness", while curly hair was a sign of dirtiness and uglyness... I don't know much about Asian culture but I know that they invented (especially Japaneses) the best straightening techniques for hair.
If white Americans have lost most of their European cultural roots living in a multicultural country, it doesn't mean "white people have no culture". White people are europeans and/or middle-easterns and we exist long time before America was discovered.

But I just think the style is beautiful and it's better then just throwing my hair up in a pony tail or bun. I have natural very curly hair and it can be a handful at times. My mom's been braiding my hair since i had long enough hair to braid. She yanked my head around made me sit still while she braided my hair. I love braids and I'm white. My dad passed before I was born and I was the youngest of us for girls then we have three brothers. We lived out on a country road my dad owned a scrap yard and we played in a creek and didn't have a car. My mom has never driven a car but our other family members did so about 8- 10 of us would pull up in like up in a station wagon to the zoo or grants farm in Saint Louis.. my hair was either still braided from the night before and id have wavy hair or my mom would make me sit down and get my hair braided. I was not around too many black people especially when I was young, but I started becoming more familiar with the culture and I never got the impression that anyone thought I was trying to be black or it just never occurred to me. I believe my mother braided my hair to keep it out of my eyes and she liked braided hair. I married a black man and actually he's dark brown and im dark white. His mom told him he better never bring a white woman home, but he did and she lives in the same apartment complex as we do, and she calls me her angel and she loves me very much and I love her so much too. I have a key to her apartment and I just walk in like I am her daughter. I braid my own hair and my husband helps me and I help him. There isn't a color barrier like that at all and I've never felt like I should have my hair braided. That's the silliest thing to think I'm acting dark brown when I'm dark white. My mom didn't have time to pretend she or her children were black. She just took care of our hair and that's how she was able to keep our hair fixed all day. My mom and brothers chopped wood and us girls hung clothes on the clothes line and after my dad died my mom had to sell the property and move us into a different state and I did get picked on for the way my mom braided my hair and I would pull out my braids on the school bus so that didn't happen. And id get in trouble because my hair was messy. I know I am not here to be something I'm not, I'm here because this is the best braids I've seen and I wanna learn more! Thanks for the tutorial! Beautiful 😍

It will cause hair loss simply because their hair isn’t thick enough or strong enough to withstand the braids. Otherwise if you are a caucasian and wanting to do box braids go for it but just be aware of hair loss.

I'm Mexican and had box braids done 2 different times when I was in Africa, this is my experience... I loved them and they looked absolutely beautiful. I got compliments and stares literally everywhere I went. I feel like a literal Queen with this hairstyle.. I washed my scalp every 3-4 days which was fine. I used gel to control any flyaways or cut them if it was the fake hair, used a protective cover for my hair at night. I took them out after 2 months. A small hand size of hair came out but this is normal for hair types like mine because there's no natural hair fall + any broken hair. Would I do it again? Yes but keep them for a shorter time. 2-3 weeks is enough just to have this style, I understand that it's not meant for "Caucasian" hair because there's no benefit like it has for African hair but I enjoyed the style so much. Oh and it took 5 hours the first time, I had two women doing my hair sometimes 3. The second time it took 6 and half hours.. two women and they had babies sometimes needing attention.

@@number1dutchkid the weight of the braids pulls on the scalp, when you wash your hair ...the braids get heavier pulling even more on the scalp and even breaking the natural hair in the braids. It makes your hair more sensitive.. is it not protective. Alopecia is from the stress of the scalp so no this will not help you. I recommend scalp oiling and keeping your head warm to create an environment for new hair growth and protect the hair you still have. Covering it up with braids will only prolong the damage.

I'm just gonna say it because I've always thought of this for a longggg time. People are sooo bothered at the fact that she's white getting a certain hairstyle....That it's not right to do so because she isn't a specific race ? Really? I'm just gonna point out that no one says anything to a black person getting a weave or bleaching her/his hair blonde? No huh, that's what I thought. Thank you.

If its NOT YOUR HAIR then MIND YOUR BUSINESS. simple as that.

    • @tunneltimes7741

Okay but blonde hair isn't reserved for just white people, black people can have naturally blonde hair and blue eyes.

So it goes both ways then. Braids don't originate from only Africa. It's founded in many cultures. It's pretty annoying seeing ppl trying to act like they're entitle to a certain hairstyle...when it's just hair omg. And regardless of what many will think, women will do whatever they want to their hair whenever they please. So it's best to stop complaining, only stressing themselves out cause most likely the white woman braiding her hair isn't gonna care what a black lady has to say...more like a black lady getting her weave or bleaching her hair. It goes both ways. So childish seeing arguments about something so simple as hair.

    • @divinusv

entitlement is a disease huh.... regardless of what anyone has to say about ANYONE'S HAIR. they're gonna do whatever the fuck they want to their damn hair. Get over it, plain and simple.

I dont know why half of these comments are about white people not supposed to be having boxbraids.. just shut up and let people do what ever they want with there hair. Theres nothing wrong with having box braids! Everyone has the right to do them whenever. Stop being racist towards blacks or whites. We are all human and deserve the same rights and respect regardless of hair style or hair type. Heck. I'm Mexican and I want box braids myself. It's just a hairstyle and anyone can have it if they want to.. and for those who are out there having people tell u that u shouldnt. Ignore them they are racist jerks and do what u wanna do. Have a nice day

I don't think she should have put Caucasian hair in the title it's just straight hair because so many black women judge white women for wearing braids or whatever is considered black hairstyles but we don't say anything when black woman wear straight weave 🤔

People are saying that "there is nothing wrong with it" or "im African American and im okay with it" still it holds alot of are history and it doesn't matter if your okay with it it made for a certain type of hair. and it isn't something we can just pass around like its a toy it's apart of a culture and this is not culture appreciation as a black girl i don't not like this at all🙄
