Looks like an awesome alternative to the 56mm f/1.2 on my T3. Budget is king and I think this will be a great budget portrait lens. Thanks so much for sharing another great video

I have 50F2 on my T3 . For my style it’s spot on . I did seriously consider the the 56F1.2 but the speed image rendering and WR was the winning factor. I would have the edge not missing a shot. Great review Damian

Hi Bro. Have been enjoying your videos along with your humour. Have recently been putting the 50mm f2 through it's paces and find I don't miss the 56mm f1.2 . The f2 is as sharp as the 1.2 but loses the bokeh. For wedding work, particularly reportage style, it is much more 'discreet' and produces s better response from the subject. It is certainly as good as the 35 f2 if not slightly better. Mounted on a X-Pro2 it us very light and easy to use one handed for candid street photography taken from a respectable distance. It seems to stay on one of my two bodies permanently whilst the 16mm and 35mm rotate on the other body. These f2 lenses do represent the Fuji ethos more than their heavier siblings. However the 16mm has to be owned no matter how heavy it is. Hope to meet one day.

@@DamianBrown nah hate football but they did well yesterday hahahah anyway quick question after getting my XT" and I'm loving spending time with it the results are amazing! I was dismayed to find out the myriad problems regarding freezing and locking up. I spent a long time yesterday looking at forums and getting depressed - just when Id found a bloody great camera that I'm beginning to love I find out all is not well. I had heated discussions with various people over 3rd party batteries and cards and the consensus is to use original Fuji batteries and Sandisk cards above 90mb/s
I'm particularly concerned about the battery grip as I'm looking to get one next week
your thoughts would be very welcomed

Got this lens not too long ago, and, yes, I agree. It's so good for the price and size that you get! One caveat, though, is that it's a little soft with f2 at minimum focusing distance.
I also did get a shot where the blur was just all over the place, like it was sharp from and closely around the focus point and to the right of it. The rest of the area on the left is blurry. That could be just not paying attention.

A very belated comment....only just found this excellent site. Great reviews, tight and practical ++
Many ,despite far higher prices, are attracted by the low light speed demons- all camera owners seem to believe " faster is better"- even if many have to be stopped down to f2-4 etc to give best results. Fair price jump to 56 1.2 and not sure the tighter focal length. Fuji seem to be adopting the Leica Summicron f/2 approach. Still have Summicron 35/2 Aspherical and 50/2 and are simply superb lens- now less used for film.
As am into Fuji X system, may purchase 16 1.4 as appears to be most highly regarded X lens, though not a focal length I would use a lot! Agree, this potential purchase doesn't make a lot of sense for me, all about "pride of ownership " & will be moving my feet a lot to get framing I want.
Apologies for lengthy post and praise again to Damian.

Great review. I find it hard to put into words why I like this so much but your... humanity. Your honesty. That really shines through. What I would have loved was some comparison shots with the 56mm AND some shots taken from the X-T10 since that's one of the camera's I might use it on. Thanks for the review!

Casual as you like always lovely to see your inoffensive, no bollocks style vids Damian,, hope the numbers grow, though you don't seem to be caring too much! So little ego for a photographer, keep it up ! I love Fuji (my kit is X-Pro1, XM1, 18mm F2, 35mm F4, Rikenon 50mm F2, Rikenon 24-135, Vivitar 24mm F2.8 and Fuji 55-200mm zoom. There's still nothing like Fuji cameras for superb IQ without spending your inheritance! Love full manual shooting. taking the time to get the shot instead of taking 5000 shots with a .000001s autofocus and a pile of crap to delete! (Correction, yeah I still get a pile of crap to delete)

Great review, Damian, and on the money regarding this awesome gem of a lens. I just ran some comparison tests against the XT2 with the 50 mm F2 against my full frame albeit older Sony A850 with the CZ 50 mm F1.4, and apart from the advantages of a wider aperture, the Fujinon 50 mm F2 was as sharp and as delightful as the CZ. A stunning lens. Really comes into magical territory around the sweet spot of F4-5.6, but you rightly point out that bokeh seekers should look at the 56 mm for slightly better out-of-focus performance and portraiture. I love owning this lens, and it sits proudly next to the 16 mm and 35 mm Fujinon primes that live permanently in my camera bag, along with the XT2.

I actually love this lens...I have the 23..F2 and now this 50mm F2 and it has an amazing bokeh...and sharpness for both lenses..The 50mm does not focus as quickly on the Xpro 1 as the 23mm. Now for the 35mm I have found an 1.4 on Ebay and ordered that....because I want that difference with one lens...Am I happy with this 50mm and do I think it has a little magic...Hell yes..

I own the 18-55 and the 50-140 for weddings and love it but i'm thinking about 23mm, or 35mm, or 50mm especially for couples. But i'm so indecisive.

    • @DamianBrown
      @DamianBrown  6 лет назад

Too much goodness out there to choose from. Out of that list, for me, maybe the 50 is a happy medium looking at what you've got. Way smaller lighter and a touch faster aperture, a lot less "intimidating" for portraits.

      "Clicks through the range nicely..."
      "Fits perfectly..."

Maybe it's my accent but I feel like most of this video is positive and not whining.
