I am here because Brief Case had shouted you out and I am glad that he did! You have excellent information on the obscure lives of that which we would not be privy to otherwise. I love your work and look forward to catching up on your videos now that I am here! Thank you!
After 18 hours of working straight, just now laying my head down to sleep. I couldn't wait to get home and listen to you and Mortis as I hug my bed and pillow 💖
I really love your videos!😍 Forgotten Lives you have people I haven't heard of before and it's like a new discovery for me of individuals that has slipped through the sands of time. Amazingly entertaining!😁
Forgotten Lives great content as always but, please have your script proofed so that the stray words and mispronounced words can be filtered out. Love the history and appreciate the labor of love that it takes to produce these videos Thanks Millions from America.
I'm a bit behind on your videos. Got hospitalized a was too sick to do anything! However now that I'm starting to feel better it's fantastic to catch up to awesome stories! I'll be down til Oct 10! Hoping to fill part of my time with the stories I'm behind. But anyhow as soon as Wilde was mentioned I knew it was all going to go wrong! Since I have all this time I went back and watched Wilde's video to refresh my mind! I thoroughly enjoyed myseif! Thank you!
The bloke was a fraudster and a liar but the punishment for being homosexual was savage. I've recently listened to a history of this re BBC radio, think it was stories from the Old Bailey? Men were entrapped then blackmailed, it's worth a listen. Thanks for a great tale. Good Wishes to you and all your followers worldwide 🌍
@@ForgottenLives I thought I'd heard the wrong year he'd been born but when I realized the 1807 was the mistake, it made me laugh to think he got married at 132 y.o. I always follow the years to get an idea of how old the people are at each event and how much time passed between each one. No problem. I got a good chuckle out of it.
I did know about Hitchen but not his name as I came across the story some years ago. I did not know that what he was doing was not uncommon, so that was new. I remember reading Henry Mayhew's book London Underworld, about crime in Mid Victorian London. He mentions a Fagin type person who was running a gang of child pickpockets and he referred to himself as the Prince of Thieves. It must have been sometime before because though the authorities did not catch him the Royal Navy did as he was press ganged into the navy. If he carried on with his previous life while at sea the punishment was to run the gauntlet which would involved running between two lines of men who would beat him with thick ropes.
Hello Sir, I find your video's extremely good and very well put together!! I would like to ask you if you could do 1 a video about the Harpe's Thank you for your time.
I've a feeling that Charles Hitchen was just referring to his wife as his family...some women were alright with their husbands being gay back then. If there was a time he stopped saying family it could be that the wife wasn't going to support him anymore.
Born in 1675 and 1807 married Elizabeth? Are you absolutely sure? Also, 1711 father-in-Law died?🤔 He must have married in 1701... I figured it out!!🥴 Incidentally... I love your videos.👍
Such were the results of homophobia and poverty. People don't fully realize what life was like for most people before the socialist revolutions of the mid 19th century (yes, even in the US). People really didn't have "rights" as we understand them (and many would question if we even in fact do now), and there was no safety net at all, not even the tattered ones we rely on today. And yes, yes I know all about how the charity at the time worked, but it was woefully inadequate for the problems it tried to address. The bottom line is that most people lived in or on the borders of desperation, and did whatever they could in order to survive as best as they could, which very often meant some kind of activity that was deemed criminal. And I guess after almost 400 years, we still haven't quite figured out what to do about it.
Damn talk about mixed feelings. I don't like the thought that people would be put in jail just for being gay. Or bi or whatever. But this guy definitely shouldn't be on the street.
Another great video. There were some dreadful criminals in London during the 18th century.

I’m confused. He was born in 1675 and married in 1807.
Think it was suppose to say 1707.
Very good story telling.

Forgotten Lives, ALWAYS enjoy your work, thank you so much Xxx
He was born @ 1675 and then you said he married in EIGHTEEN 07 and then went back to 1711. That twisted my brain a bit.
My mistake, I didn't realise. I meant 1707 of course, will be more careful next time!

"officer! that man assaulted me!"
"well did you assault him back?"
"what?! *blush*...what are you implying?" :-)
Good story shame about the adverts..
Why did we stop the public shaming?
Another top tale they should bring back the stocks x
There was a lot going on in this story but what got me the most was the weirdo watching “bad manners” from the keyhole. Wtf kind of pervert is that?
Ty.

One must learn grammar, spelling, and good vocabulary!
nice story love them all
Hitchins sounds like distant relative of Ronnie Kray and Fagan.
🙂👍

Surprised he could have a child at 132.
Born in 1675 and got married in 1807? I must have heard it wrong.
