B&M 250 Supercharger Rebuild: Carb Adapter, Sandblasting, and Painting (78 Firebird Ep.26)

  • The set of supercharger parts we bought off of eBay didn't include a few important things like the carburetor adapter plate that bolts to the top of the case and allows carburetors to be attached, and we're certainly going to need one. It was a tough time even finding one, and we still had to make some changes to make it work. We also have to clean up all of the major components, which means a trip to the blasting cabinet to take off the old paint and years of use. Finally, we'll paint the individual components to get them ready for reassembly.
    Timeline of filming: December 16th, 2019 - April 26th, 2020
    Song List (Order of First Appearance):

    6:35 Jeremiah's Song - Dan Lebowitz

    If you have to cut aluminium with cutting discs get yourself an old candle and cut into it occasionally when cutting. Makes the cuts much easier and makes the discs last way longer as they don’t chatter and clog. Works with sanding discs and flap wheels aswell just make sure to clean afterwards especially if your ever gonna weld the area. Nice work

    Looks awesome. That being said you may find you need to change the rotor seals after running for a bit. The factory machine finish aids in sealing the rotor seals to the case. Keep an eye on boost dropping over time. May mean a seal replacement is needed.

    A good primer that I think you should look into is the duplicolor self etching primer. I use it regularly in a restoration shop, it adheres super well to pretty much everything, and it's just a surefire way to make sure your paint sticks good. Though what you did here should also last a good long time!

    I'm getting intense flashbacks of all of the times I "saved money" by buying used parts and abandoned projects. Whatever you do, don't start counting up your receipts or time to get that stuff right. 😆
    I'm also sitting here with my jaw a gap over how straight of a cut you were able to make with a grinder. It would have looked like I swung an angry beaver at it if I had tried that. FWIW, actual machine shop labor isn't as expensive as a lot of people think it is. I would imagine a "whenever you can fit it in and it's not going on a spaceship" project of that size wouldn't be more than $100. I may also be known to chuck a mill cutter into my drill press... allegedly.
    ...I also feel like some other guy just made a video about painting car parts. 😎😁

    Paused the video a few minutes in... the carb adapter is a really good opportunity for 3d printing as plastic would kill the heat soak between the blower and carbs, easily custom made to fit, and I know with blowers putting weak points to act as mechanical fuses for safety in event of over boosting is a big deal, and a plastic component would work quite well I imagine in that regard

    Very nice job!     • @TheBrokenLife
      @TheBrokenLife Год назад +1

      Only because we actually had a bus with a 6-71 in it do I feel compelled to mention it's "6-71", not 671, especially if it came from an actual Detroit Diesel engine. 6 cylinders, 71 cubic inches per cylinder, is now Detroit nomenclature of the era worked (and the 71 series was manufactured for like 80 years, which is why that nomenclature is still popular today). X-71 were inline motors, Xv71 were the Vs. The aftermarket sort of fudges it now with things like "14-71" sized blowers, where there was never such an engine.
      Anyhow... Please excuse my pedantry. 😉

    It would be really interesting to know how many hours this supercharger rebuild takes. Multiply that by a fair working wage and see how much (if anything) the satisfaction of rebuilding and fixing something old that most people would be scared to even take the lid off, costs or saves vs just buying a new blower
    It's something i am currently struggling with in my own projects. Lol.
