I bought my 338 win about 35 yrs ago when I moved up to the Yukon. It is a Winlite mod 70 and at 6.2 lbs, it is a handful. That said, I hunted with it almost exclusively for the next 20 yrs and shot more game, species and total number, than all my other rifles combined. To say it is a favorite of mine would be a gross understatement.
I went all out with this cartridge! I loved everything Adam Weatherby was selling on it and purchased a custom rifle from the Weatherby shop chambered in 338 RPM. Living in Alaska I wanted that all around rifle for sheep up to brown bear, I think another aspect of this is that gets over looked is it was developed for a purpose. It’s light, it’s efficient, and the rifles it’s chambered for are more capable than we can be. But I love my 338 RPM 👌🏼
"THE" Elk cartridge is the 340 Weatherby. I shoot 225gr. at over 3000fps and 250gr at 2950fps. But it's a long action, and one shouldn't want one in a 5# gun, LOL!
Every Elk I ever killed was either with a muzzle loader ( Hawken Rifle) or a 7mm REM Mag. My retinas are still attached and my shoulder socket is still intact , lol.
Those Wby's fit a Mag. lengh action 3.7-3.8". The 338 WM and the 338 RPM in a Std long action(30-06 Size). That's the action(3.8") I chose for a project in 7mm Rem Mag. A bit whimpy compared to the 340. But🤣
@@donaldmartin4980 haha right! I’ve seen a lot of elk die to 243 and 270s! Got rid of the Ultra Mags and I’m in it for short efficient cartridges now 🤣
I had no idea the 338 Winmag and the 338 WBY RPM were so close performance. For for some reason I had it in my head that the winmag was a bohemith of a sledgehammer and the Weatherby was a more dainty sleek new-age mountain cartridge
You should check the Cartridge case dimentions and powder case cap. to compare(I like Nosler Load data, Nice pics). Back in the day Wby. brought out the 340 to out perform the 338 WM. Gotta say that I love my 338 WM! Ruger M77 MKII is pretty easy to shoot in this cartridge. Also if you wanted load data for the RPM, Hodgdon has it on their website and in printed format. I just bought a Hodgdon reloading book from Midway last week that surprisingly had RPM data. Their data shows that they are ballistic twins in pretty much every way.

The ammo companies are to blame for rounds like the 300 WSM and 338 WM not being available when there are tons of guns out there. We don't need any more 6.5 Creedmoor ammo or the redundant 7 PRC. I like the direction Weatherby is going with the RPM rounds to the point where I hardly think of any of the older rounds any more even though they are good cartridges.

🕵️♂️ As You Know, the 338 WM has a Larger Frontal Area (Makes a Bigger Hole, Going At Similar Velocities and Using The Same Bullet Construction) than the 300 WM and Can Shoot Heavier Bullets!
