My husband and I have driven cross-country from California to Virginia then Virginia to Nevada. What an interesting journey that was!

Oh yes, especially for me in our case since I’d never done anything like that before. My husband did it with his brother when they were younger. America is so very interesting and beautiful ♥️🇺🇸

@Linasgardens I got to see so many parts of the country and their unique vibes. It got scary sometimes, though, when we were the only car on the road in the dark or driving in the snow.

Hi Lina! Wow welcome to Virginia & mosquitoes! Yes the old outdoor cooking pit does work. I live in a home built in the 20’s & have one made of stones. The trees, pergola & open space is quite delightful. You should definitely do some planting on the side. Call it the secret garden. I’ve recently started to collect Japanese maple trees which has become my new passion & love. Your climate conditions are great for such trees in containers or planted in the ground. Their roots are small & shallow so growing them are quite easy. Happy planting! ❤

Hi Sammy! Haha yay to the quaint and beautiful cooking pit and boo to the mosquitoes! 🤣 Is this why marigolds are sold everywhere?! All the garden centers I’ve visited so far have a bunch of them.
I’m so excited about the pergola area. There’s so much potential. I miss my Bloodgood Japanese Maple tree so so badly. I love Japanese maple trees, too. They’re so charming. I see some of them in my neighborhood. How many have you collected so far? Do you grow them in containers?

Your fireplace may actually have been built to burn trash, which used to be a common backyard item.
I feel for you leaving a beautiful established garden. 😢 We moved from our 40 yr. home and garden in the Pasadena area of SoCal to the Redwood Coast of NorCal several years ago. I couldn't bear to leave my favorite plants behind and wound up bringing several potted and not-yet-potted cuttings of my favorite rare old roses and my David Austin roses*, abutilons, fuchsias, camellias, etc. We also brought seeds from our clivias and much more, plus a huge variety of rare bulbs, tubers and corms. I brought all of my cymbidium orchids, ground orchids, house plants, AND an incense cedar tree seedling (now a bonsai) that was a volunteer in our garden from our HUGE incense cedar that was planted when the house was new in 1926. The tree was a Mother's Day gift from the owner's son; he grew it as part of a 3rd grade class project!
Best wishes in your new home and garden.

Oh wow! I can picture how beautiful your garden was in your 40 yr home! Leaving my garden behind hurt my heart… I poured my heart and soul into transforming that green space for 5 years 🥹 But someday I will get to see it again. Thank you for such an encouraging message. Happy gardening! 🌿🌸💚

Hi Lina! Welcome to VA! I live in Woodbridge, Va. I don’t know what the soil is like on the WC but here we have thick red clay. Drainage is a problem. Amend the soil with compost before planting. I’m excited to see your garden transformation.

Welcome to Virginia! I’m just south of you! Happy growing. I believe you may be in Zone 7B or 7A. Google your plant zone with your zip code. We had a very mild winter and so far a mild spring. Though it has been raining here pretty good the last week. Just wait - after Memorial Day it can get pretty hot and humid! I strongly suggest visiting the nearest Botanical Gardens - and most definitely the one in DC! Can’t wait for your garden videos! God bless you!

@@Linasgardens yep.. Same thing.. They are called several different names. Be careful on a really cold winter day. I've heard that a full tank of water(when frozen) will cause the tank to crack if not drained.. Just a heads up.. But I think you are good for a little while on that. Just don't forget!

Sigh… this is so sad. Luckily I only ordered 4 roses.. which came out to just over $100 but still.. that’s money 😣 I can’t wait for the roses to come next season since I’m only going to be here for 3 years, nor am I interested in their other products like candles and such. Sigh… I’m anticipating a hassle to get a refund now. I really hope not though.
