      @@DarqJestor Absolutely. The same people offering the solution for housing are the same ones with the policies that increased the cost of living to the point that these people had to leave a home they already had to live on the streets. only to have the same people come back around and be like " hey there friend and voter.. I have a nice storage container you can live in"

      So do nothing is your solution? So you and others can keep politicizing it? It doesn't matter who created this. Taxing the ultra wealthy at a sane level just like we did decades ago is also a solution that will work.@@WrongThink_

    • @TheHardcard
      @TheHardcard 4 месяца назад +42

      @@WrongThink_ The question is who “they” are. It true they created the problem, but this current crisis is the result of 80 years of continuous work. There is a divide in politics and both sides have had a hand in this. President Eisenhower had just as big a hand in this as any current politician.
      And neither side has a solution. This is, at best, a temporary mitigation. To the extent it helps these people, I support it. To the extent it makes it easier for everyone to do what they need to do on the streets, also good.
      But problem solved, it’s over? No.

    "The shredding of the social safety net over years has resulted in the situation we have here." Truer words have never been spoken.
    We remove and downsize all the supports people need, and then we criticize them for not being able to make it. This is the direct result of the "pull yourself up by your bootstraps" mentality that has reigned since I can remember.

      The unspoken part of "pull yourself up by your bootstraps" is "while we step on your neck..." I remember being a kid in the 80s and it was "get a job and you'll be fine." They added a qualifier to that over time. "Get a GOOD job and you'll be fine..." What do we consider a good job? Apparently, the only "good" jobs are in politics or being rich due to parents. The very foundations of our society (service workers, nurses, teachers, EMTs, construction workers, et cetera) aren't GOOD enough for a wage that allows them to live healthy, happy lives AND save for their futures properly? The sad part is that most a-holes that say Taco Bell isn't a "good enough" job for someone to work fulltime and actually be doing well in the economy are the SAME d-bags that go to Taco Bell to have their food made for them. I know Boomers are thinking that people are just too lazy. Meanwhile, THEY are the ones who drove us into this ever-widening quagmire. It wasn't TikTok dances or green hair...

      Yes, and the same thing has happened in Canada since we signed NAFTA. Things have gone too far now. A lot of our old established companies were taken over or shut out. Eatons, Hudson Bay Company, the Metropolitan Stores, etc... Our social safety net has been eviscerated, our environmental and consumer protections have been successfully challenged, Prime Minister Harper's admin was promoting Bank investment products and allowed propaganda against the nation's own Canada Pension Plan and OAS, seized our employment insurance fund surplus (employee and employer funded) years ago and reduced our employment Insurance benefit allowance Trudeau increased it but not all the way back to the old more generous rate. At the provincial level, our welfare budgets have been neglected and are currently inhumane, provincial public housing stock was actually neglected at best and/or worse, reduced over 30 years, health care has separated mental health and addictions services apart from regular health care, and health care has been chronically underfunded and has become partly commercialized. For about 30 years now, provincial Liberal and Conservative politicians have been adverse to put limits on rent increases or make eviction laws more humane. Canada now too has huge numbers of homeless people, we've become Americanized. Beware of the international trade agreements like NAFTA or CETA, they do an end run around the democratically enacted laws we brought in through debate and vote, they give corporations too much power because they interfere in our ability to determine own civic governance

(My friend visiting from Minneapolis actually remarked that she saw fewer encampments here than at home!) I just hope there are options for folks after their temporary housing runs out. We need housing solutions that cost $500 or less. You can't even rent a bedroom in a shared apartment in LA for less than $1000 per month which means anyone underemployed has no option but to live in their car or in a tent. Affordable housing should be plentiful enough to be available for all without having to go through a nightmarish waiting list or public assistance quagmire.

    I house my mentally ill sister because otherwise she would be homeless. There is no hospitalization available for her; no assisted living; no disability services (because she was rejected twice even with lawyers helping). She was in active psychosis when we took her in and part of psychotic illnesses is the resistance to treatment. In order for her to stay here, she must remain medicated.
    However, the mental health system in our nation is VERY broken. The days of mental facilities are over, and it is a BIG part of why people are on the streets.
    This woman is doing a great service to the mentally ill by having them be hospitalized for short-term observation and treatment.
    Society is better off for all (including those with the illness) when boundaries are put in place with these situations.
    I now watch the work of this woman every chance I get because she is getting to the root of some things, and is tireless in her efforts. She’s beyond just a mayor; she’s an angel who works to solve real issues.

A home is a house and everything in it that brings a sense of safety, warmth, and security. It houses our affections, our loved ones - it warms our spirits. If we can not meet the needs of the whole person we at least offer them shelter. The new Guard only addresses the physicality of an entity, eliminating "old" think. I prefer setting my sights higher.
