It's absolutely fine to use on the X-T5, it is part of a very specific work flow we have (Instant portraiture, where photos are printed to 8" x 6" approx. 20cm by 150 cm) so it's flaws are not noticeable anyway, but the render is still beautiful. It is almost always stopped down to at least F/2.8 in these situations and we have complete control of the lighting. I'd happily use this lens wide open if I have control of the lighting and where the subject is in the centre of the frame, and in situations where every photo is not needed then I can pick and choose. Would I sell it? not as long as I shoot Fuji X Would I buy it again.... No if it was damaged, stolen, or lost and I needed a 35mm ish lens, I'd buy the 33mm F/1.4. In Printed photographs, I really don't see a benefit of the 40MP over the 26MP sensor when viewed at a normal viewing distance (not printed to A1 and viewed from 5 cm away) unless the image needs to be heavily cropped which is not common (at least for me) outside of wildlife photography (and then you wouldn't be using the 35mm), hence I still shoot mostly on an X-T3 and leave the X-T5 with our other photographer. there are no lenses I regret selling, there are lenses I regret buying (or wish I had not) 60mm F/2.4 16-80mm F/4 are the 2 biggest regrets The 60mm for a moderately expensive lens, performs poorly wide open or stopped down to F/2.8, really needs to be at F/4 or F/5.6, biggest regret is the poor resale value, so I just keep it and don't use it. The 16-80 I sold I didn't lose money on that lens as got it in a kit, but found it to be very soft outside of the centre, and really needed to be stopped down to F/8....
Hei, I just posted about this if it is still relevant: I just got a cheap used XF 35mm 1.4, putting it on my X-T5 and I could not be more controversial about a lens to be honest :D The zommed in quality on anything that has not a 100% clear object (landscapes, city scapes, architecture, etc.) that needs good sharpness and contrast over the whole image is really painfully bad, it looks like rubbish... especially the far away areas are just so washed out, that I wonder if this lens is compatible with my camera at all.... zoomed out on anything up to laptop screen size though, even those images have some kind of "cool look" to them, even they are far from "technically good" ..... and the big but.... as soon as there is a "clear subject" in the image - be it a plate of food, or a face, etc. that is in close distance, and can be separated from the background.... wow, what the hell? Is this the same lens still? On 100% it is still not overly sharp, but I'd say going out to 80-90% zoom and it's already very usable and fitting it to any normal screen size makes the pictures so beautiful, that I am now in a very big trouble of keeping the lens only for exactly this one style of images with a clear subject in 0.4-2m distance :'D Especially as the alternative 33mm 1.4 is too big for my taste (as someone who travels with the gear a lot, or wants to shoot a bit more "undercover" in streets...), even though it seems technically so much more suitable for the X-T5 😢
@@kevindreameditthis is exactly what’s happening with my XF16 1.4 It used to be my all rounder lens on XT20, but with XT5 the image quality has gone trash. I went for a walk with my friends and we did a shoot out with it, jpegs, 1.4 to 2.0 aperture.. in what universe it's "not sharp"? I can compare it to the lenses i had previously on fuji - tamron 17-70 zoom and 23 f2 prime. Maybe those 2 are technically sharper, but images from 35 1.4 look aesthetically more pleasing even at equal aperture values. The only complain i have is the aperture ring is just a bit loose, it's not moving on it's on but it will move if you accidently bump it with a finger. This is by the way is going to be my only lens on the X-T30 camera, because i am not gonna invest in this system any further. It's gonna be my nice second camera that i can have some fun with.
Awesome lens, I haven't shoot much with the X-T5 because the weather is nasty but I know the limitations. Priority for my travel kit is size and weight. My lenses are 16mm f2.8, 35mm f1.4 and I just bought the 50mm f2. 2 of 3 on the Fujifilm list. To me, good enough!
Nice video - Tongue. I love the 35mm as it was my first lens for the X-T1 - 10 years now and it is still one of my favorite lenses. Yes, it does have a vintage character and it is slow to focus. It is super lightweight on the x-S20.
It should be noted that this lens [one of the first XF lenses ever created] is from 2012. It was designed for the 16MP X-Trans sensors that was future proofed to cover the 24 and 26MP X-Trans. everything negative mentioned for the 40MP sensor is not an issue with the older bodies it was designed for. On FB this week I posted a beachscape shot this week with this lens and my X-Pro2 and going in 100% it is sharp as ever with clear details and no ghosting or aborations. So putting it on a 40MP fuji is takin a risk if you are a pixel peeper. When someone new to photography asks me if they should get the new 40MP Fujis and lenses I steer them toward the older cameras for two reasons; a) no one needs 40MPs unless you're a pro and print or crop a lot, 24, heck even 16MPs is PLENTY for 99% of uses... and b) costs! these lenses and bodies can be had for dirt cheap deals now and you get the same image as you get with new models but better because fuji early on made their lenses and sensors to have a filmic quality with unique image rendering that the new cameras can't copy imho.
Would love a native Fuji manual focus lens. They'd just need to cover 18mm, 23mm, 35mm and 50mm. Done. Make this a selling point for the x pro bodies to get even more rangefinder like experience. I like my Voigtländer Nokton 35mm, but even at 400€ for a used Copy it is expensive for what it does
I like the rendering and the transition to the out of focus zone especially around the subject, but I hate the chromatic aberration and the autofocus. I'm thinking to sell it.
Awesome content as usual. It's pretty sad that this lens cannot function at 100% when used with a 40mp sensor. Lenses are getting bigger and bigger, which partially defeats the purpose of buying into a compact APS-C system.
Great video, I really like the output of this lens but it really shows its age with resolving power and outdated AF unfortunately… I agree also with you in your complaint about the weight of the new 23/33…they just made my wrist fatigue as everyday walkaround lenses or when used whole day for travel…for professional work there is no problem to take photos for few hours and they are fine, but for travel I am still relaying on my Fujicrons and Pancakes that are fast enought in low light with realiable with AF…
Couple months back I sold my X-E3 + XF 35 f1.4 combo as I jumped to Canon R8 + RF 35 f1.8 and now I start to regret selling my Fuji setup. Canon is not a lot bigger but it counts especially during travel and especially when you have two kids. XF 35 f1.4 has a really nice rendering : softer light transitions, color rendering, bokeh, softness with halation wide open, field curvature. It definitely has character and look that is hard to replicate with post processing. My current setup now feels too clinical and I often add softness and diffusion in post process. Fuji setup with DxO software is sharp enough even if you pixel peep, with Lightroom maybe not but in the end pixel peeping doesn't make sense.
I love it's small footprint, but never really cared for it. They say the lens has characters--- but i just didnt like how soft wide open and slow the autofocus was. The 33mm for me was just better in every single way aside from the larger dimension size compared to the 35mm.
You probably don't look the filmic look but more the clinical sharpness of modern camera. The softness is part of what gives Fujifilm photos their film-like characters.
@@richbrook101 not true. There’s a time and place for everything depends on what I’m shooting and its intention. Whenever I want to add more “character” or a filmic look I can always attach a diffusion filter to the modern lens to lessen its clinical look (in which I do often). With the old 35mm, I find my self fighting against its short comings more often then I want.
@@JustZG I don't agree. There is more than just sharpness. How the lens renders light transitions, bokeh balls, field curvature, how it works against direct sunlight, flares and so on. Your video is the proof - the banger shots you took with the 35mm are what make it special - its not so much the lens! The price / AF performance of the 35mm is why I personally wouldn't bother - I am also not a fan of lots of chromatic aberration. Sure I feel silly in the moment lugging a "big" camera around with "big" lenses. But traveling is special, I don't do it often. Why should I take photos with my WORST, rather than BEST stuff? @@Iamtongue did You ever think more about this list? Why on earth there is listed XF 16/2.8 and not XF 16/1.4 which is superior in any way. Why there is mediocre (to say at least) XF 16-80/4 with it's poor corner sharpness? List goes on. Not to mention that 40 Mpix X-Trans V sensor gives almost zero benefits compared to 26Mpox X-Trans IV, when it comes to gain in fine details. Images on new sensor looks like upscaled to 40 Mpix (like You could do in PS). Don't believe me? Then try to do simple test: take a shot from best XF lens You got on 40mpix sensor, then downscale this file in LR to 26Mpix, upscale it again in LR to 40mpix, and then zoom in and compare all this fine details and pixels from original file to processed one. You will notice almost none differences. Profesional lab tests confirms that. It's not sensor fault, it's because lenses are not able to produce efficient resolution to "feed" such demanding sensor like 40Mpix apsc (which is like 90Mpix FF, when it comes to pixel density). So Fujifilm list describes lenses, who can "resolve" sharpness on upscaled 26Mpix images? LOL 😂
Sure, Your call. But I think truth should be spread around about 40Mpix sensor and its zero benefits in fine details vs 26Mpix sensor. My default answer is feed your gas. If you don’t like it you can resell it and lose a little bit of money..I usually think
Of it has rental cost
@@Iamtongue xD omw buying that pancake and 56mm sigma
@@cyano3d LOL SORRY IN ADVANCE IF YOH DOTN LIKE IT
@@Iamtongue we win some we lose some, here i just starve for few weeks xd
@@Iamtongue btw are you on discord i would love to be in your server and share my photos and get your thoughts
I can pretty much tell you edit in lightroom and not Capture Cne. Photos have the lightroom muddyness to them
Yea it's no secret lol i've been saying it for years.
I just got a cheap used XF 35mm 1.4, putting it on my X-T5 and I could not be more controversial about a lens to be honest :D
The zommed in quality on anything that has not a 100% clear object (landscapes, city scapes, architecture, etc.) that needs good sharpness and contrast over the whole image is really painfully bad, it looks like rubbish... especially the far away areas are just so washed out, that I wonder if this lens is compatible with my camera at all.... zoomed out on anything up to laptop screen size though, even those images have some kind of "cool look" to them, even they are far from "technically good" .....
and the big but.... as soon as there is a "clear subject" in the image - be it a plate of food, or a face, etc. that is in close distance, and can be separated from the background.... wow, what the hell? Is this the same lens still? On 100% it is still not overly sharp, but I'd say going out to 80-90% zoom and it's already very usable and fitting it to any normal screen size makes the pictures so beautiful, that I am now in a very big trouble of keeping the lens only for exactly this one style of images with a clear subject in 0.4-2m distance :'D Especially as the alternative 33mm 1.4 is too big for my taste (as someone who travels with the gear a lot, or wants to shoot a bit more "undercover" in streets...), even though it seems technically so much more suitable for the X-T5 😢
Looking great on my xs10:)))
always! :D
I am asian and yes, every centimeter counts! HaHa! I'm still loving my 35 after owning it and selling it twice I am sure the third time owning it is a charm and will not sell it again.
hahaha
It's a gem, and I aint selling ittt
Amazing!
my Precious!
PRECIOUSSSS
Will never sell mine
This lens is awesome on my xs10 I won’t sell this lens ever 😊
ya don't haha
She said you didnt last ling enough
Fujifilm XT5 is heavy, I don’t ppl will say about Nikon Z8 with 85 f1.2 or Canon 85mm 1.4 😂
Rip
And at least you weren’t shooting blanks with it 😂
At least😭
Every centimeter counts 😂
LOL it does! 🥲😭
Nah, is slow as F*ck. I dont regret dumping it for the 33mm.
Never looking back.
On what body?
I have both…originally sold the 35/1.4 for the 33/1.4 but after selling it, I missed the characteristics and purchased another copy. I’ll never sell it again.
I agree…the hand fatigue with that lens and camera combo is very real and I find myself grabbing the 35 more due to this very reason.
This Fujifilm 40Mpix lens resolving list is bunch of crap. Completely useless and confusing list.
how is it confusing? I've tested the ones that arent and i can see why they aren't on the list lol.
LOL 😂
OHHHHH okay this all sounds like stuff i don't want to do. But I'll take your word for it.
Sure, Your call.
But I think truth should be spread around about 40Mpix sensor and its zero benefits in fine details vs 26Mpix sensor. (and Fujifilm so called "resolving list" 😏)
Don't You think this topic would be hot in community, and one and only on whole YT?
I can promise You, it will be heavly commented, same as I started this thread in dpreview and put stick to ant nest. In first noone believed me, but after showcasing full res photo examples, there was nothing more to say, just accept the facts.
bro just make a video so i can watch you share your findings 😅😂
Every cm counts😂
It sure does 😭
