X Men 97: The lesson Marvel needs to learn

- ▸ Can we trust the MCU to not mess up the X-Men? From the success of X-Men '97, we were shown that the MCU not only should, but needs to learn from it's past. How a connected universe is more important than the throw away movies and TV shows of recent years. And with plenty of examples from the comics, there are no excuses.

So thankful to be alive in this period of time. Seeing OG X-Men to X-Men 97 transition into better production quality like it deserves feels like such a great payoff for being a long time fan
Right!
Yea just needed to see OG X Men actually
Its trash
@@Blade5067Your opinion is trash.
@@Blade5067Trash opinion
Episode 5 was one of the craziest episodes of anything I’ve seen in a long time.
That episode was the kick off and my goodness what a kick!
Remember it!!
They really did a fantastic job of having a few "easy" episodes to re-establish the vibe and the team.
And then immediately just bolting the gas pedal to the floor the second you got comfortable
@@TributeJr Straight farted and locked the windows too.
Instant classic
I've said it during early phase 4 when people were discussing the inclusion of the Fantastic 4: Just show a 20-second news clip of Doctor Doom taunting the rest of the world about how they're struggling in the aftermath of the "Blip" while Latveria was virtually unaffected by any consequences. Cameos and implied connections like that make the world feel so much bigger than what you immediately see on screen and establishes peripheral plot threads that you can use later on.
The X-Men are basically their own mini-universe inside of marvel. It feels like it would be impossible to not have multiple X-Men projects going on at once to fully get that vibe.
2:30 I loved the Morph cameo drops. They were having a good time teasing the public with the goodies.
Yea implying at the end that Morph turns into Jean to make love with Wolverine at least closed the gap on their relationship at the beginning of the season in the showers
@@chiquita683 🤣🤣🤣 I really laughed. Thank you.
I use to laugh at the original series morph like bro u can't turn into someone that could actually help the team? 97 morph smash 👌🏾
*he
@@josephcrollawelch Thank you! It was about Wolverine so often they they weren’t giving other characters their due.
I hope Disney/Marvel follows the paper trail & stick with what works instead of what they’ll most likely attempt.
Just think about the unbelievably badass payoff of Cap wiggling the hammer in Civil War and knowing that that moment is coming and several years later it was one of the greatest moments in a theater i ever experienced. Thats good patient story writing
And Joss Whedon specifically NOT filming Cap saying Assemble! At the end of Age of Ultron.
That was Age of Ultron bruh
@davidwhite2561 yeah, my bad , can't believe I did that lol ✌️
The thought and reassurance of “okay so they’re actually diving deeper into the comics this time” crossed my mind when I finished the 97 season … completely agree Rob.
I loved the whole Wolverine butterfly effect chain of events.... you should do one for Hulk
Agree! The XMen could/should be the hub for everything in the MCU because, well mutants could be/are everywhere. As things develop in the future phases, the XMen could continue with thread pulling and creation.
Yeah and the hub used to be SPIDER-MAN, since he’s a hero that gets around a lot, he’s encountered the x-men, the avengers, and the fantastic four and the beyonder.
So, I’m kinda hoping we get to see the return of other hero series as well due to the success of X-MEN 97.
I think X-Men should be a separate Universe from main MCU. Superheroes are hated & feared in XM, but are loved in the MCU universe. 2 different cultures.
This show was freaking perfect in my opinion. Especially compared to everything that's come out since Endgame.
I am so glad that X-Men 97 exists and I came back to rewatch all your videos all over again, I love your work bro. Keep doing more please.
I want Spiderman 98 & Silver Surfer 98
It's obvious that it would also be Spider-Man 97. Marvel should just build around a 97 universe as they have shown in X-Men with all the cameos already. We also know at this point that Peter saved MJ. As with Spider-Man animated series ended with Peter looking for MJ through the multiverse, it should continue from there. Since X-Men 97 is set in 97, it means that Peter finding MJ happened before 98 where the series should continue.
I second that motion
Ironman also.
Fiege should have you on his team. Seriously! Like he really needs too. Especially for X-Men stuff.
4:23 We're actually getting a video game next year titled Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra with Cap and King T'Chanda being playable characters.
I can’t watch Invincible again after watching that beautiful animation from X-men 97😢
I feel the same way, But I also feel a lot of reviewers don't go back far enough with all the retcons over the years . I'm 56 and read my first Marvel comic aged about 4 and still love them. Hoping DP & Wol give me me that first 10 years feeling at least one last time .
I just discovered your channel and I really like it because (1) you synthesize and summarize very long, multi-title storyline arcs that I probably wouldn’t have the patience to read through and (2) there is something so wholesome and enjoyable hearing about how excited you get when you’re talking about cool moments in comics (Exodus vs. the Eternals is the most recent one that comes to mind) that honestly reminds me of why I started getting into comics in the first place. Keep up the amazing work!
Rob I’m thankful you doing these videos again 💯 always give us the good information
Interesting perspective, got me thinking!
This beat is oh so clean.
What?
As a former Marvel employee, all I can say is . . . TRUE ‘DAT!!!
Its trash tho.
I was a Senior Product manager, and I had to sit through a 2002 executive meeting where a White executive was trashing Halle Berry for crying through her Oscar speech.
It was during a meeting where we were discussing the X2 product launch ironically enough.
Instead of being happy that her win would broaden our audience and generate more money for our movies, this person was policing her behavior and low-key pissed that she won.
Who the f@ck does that?!
And this person was part of planning Phase IV.
@@guruuvybasically hating on their own teammates WTF
@@AndreMSmithJr-yx8kd -Basically! That’s why I joined the ‘Recast T’Challa’ movement the second it formed!
I saw it firsthand.
@@guruuvydamn I always wondered why it fell so hard after Endgame especially, and I concur T'Challa needed recasting..... Black Men don't have enough heroes....
Marvel should DOMINATE animations from now on.
Nah.....DC is too well established in that game
@pslim68 right that's the only place outside of comics that profits. Peak animation movies really likeing the infinite crisis movies can't wait for the 3rd 1
Pretty sure anime got that
@@pslim68that shouldn’t stop them, didn’t stop universal with Disney being the one who’s large or Sega because of Nintendo
@@pslim68 eh they definitely can compete if they can put out quality like '97 and OG SMTAS
This was so much of great information that you gave us. I do appreciate it.
X-Men '97 is a different animal!🔥🔥
But it's failure according to THAT part of youtube and cosmicbooknews
@@BrandonweifuThey're wrong. People are wrong all the time. Fact is that this series has been a huge success and has fans fired up for the future of X-Men.
But the firing of the show runner made me a little iffy for the next season.
@@GenJuhru He wrote season 2 as well, which had already been greenlit for production by Disney.

I have been watching your videos for the better part of a decade and you always make a video expressing my exact thoughts and feelings. Thank you for everything you do Rob.
Thank you for this Rob
I haven’t watched you in a few years but damn the production quality is incredible! Vocals smooth as always but the depth and compression is sweet, editing is fire, and the set is sick!!!
Really loved this video format

Damn your breakdowns are epic proportions!! Great 👍 video
Your storytelling was beautiful. Thank you.
Excellent information 😉👏🏽
Xmen: first class is definitely a template they should follow. One of the most underrated Xmen movies that doesn't get much love
Gambit was the best part of this season!!
It's going to be kind of empty without him
Their reunion as a horseman, I'm gonna have expectations.
@@delightonailende620he coming back with our boy apoc, don't trip
Another great video. If they take their time and put in the work to make it feel organic it could be amazing.
Cyclops and Mr.Fantastic really about to be the Captain America and Tony Stark of these new phases
It always fealt like there was a huve separation between mutant centric comics and Marvel's other super teams back in my prime comics reading decade (90s). There were so many X-Books back then that you really didn't need to tie in to the Avengers if you didn't have the cash.....so many self contained X-Stories and arcs. It gets very muddy when those worlds collide.
MCU should make a Gambit solo movie
just wanted to say, i really like this sort of content. its like the news but important and not sad
Agreed, wish MCU did more world building, more easter eggs and nods to other characters/stories in the universe.
Great take sir
Morph doing his thing really gave me some hope. I didn’t think he could use their powers but regardless, he’s amazing to watch.
Rob I love your content I can rewatch your videos anyday you remind me of my older bro who is also your age and literally taught me my love and knowledge of marvel and comics in general I love to watch your videos and hear his take on the hero or comic and educate him on things he didn’t know based on your videos lol 😂
Man, your channel is top tier A-1 comic book analysis. I’ve learned a lot because of the effort you put into this work. Keep up the good work. And thank god you read those comics so we don’t have to! lol.
I totally agree with you, and thank you for breaking down how The Avengers and the X-Men tie into each other.
Awesome! Cameos are exciting! Plus they connect to other things as well, 🤯 (sarcasm because “ThatOneGuy going after fans for being excited about these cameos”). Great video Rob! Keep the great work up man.
Need Legion to be one of the hinted at arrivals in movies to come. My guy Dan Stevens would be huge for the MCU.
Cohesion between all films is the most important. Above everything, tying it all together is what makes these shows worth it. I completely agree. Have a nice chunk of fluff hidden or openly for the audience to digest after the film ends.
I love your channel. You always remind me that my knowledge of Marvel is barely surface level and that the writers of the comics really love these characters. The directors and screen writers need to read these stories or watch your channel to get educated
You're literally wrong
@@blowc1612 wrong about what
Well said Rob.
X-Men 97 basically had the very best versions of these characters on-screen.... ever.
Also, the power that they displayed and the emotion was absolutely top-class. I've always thought Cyclops was "meh" until I saw him in '97 and he's a real front running leader type character. Just the same as Iron-Man and Cap.
The problem is, I just don't have any faith in the MCU anymore that they can cast and write the same as they did for the beginning of the MCU.
I hope they treat the Xmen movies like they did Spiderman, where they just pick up after everyone’s together, instead of trying to cram all these origins and first meetings into one film.
I definitely share the same concern that they wont trust audiences to wait for the type of world building that would be truly great. Like theyre just going to rush into Phoenix saga or something which i 100% want to see done right but we need to care about Jean and watch her die and watch scott and the team grieve. Like there are so many great multi film arcs
Spot on
All great points Rob. That feeling of going to watch iron man all the way up to endgame can't be replicated or replaced, but they can actually start setting the cookie crumbs alot better like they used to. Hope Marvel hears this
There are a few links between the teams that they can leverage.
Cap and Logan
Carol and Rogue
Storm and Black Panther
Hulk and Logan
Bro, I agree I loved Xmen 97.They need to continue to make these teams a part of a larger MCU.
Every once a while, something happens to you that makes you realise ''You haven't seen everything there is to see''. Arcane, Blue Eye Samurai, Invincible are classic examples of what's to come. X Men '97 is another level of WOW! What makes the show unforgettable? Marvel stepped up. They did not disappoint...I'm seriously looking forward to season 2. Television may be dead these days but show is a reminder there are some signs of life here and there.
Dude, the continuity aspect of marvel can be so so soooo cool. We need more of a focus on that
Agree with it all, I hope they do the work to mesh the xmen into the mcu with all the comic connections. Hopefully it’s not all teases that turn into Ralph bohners
Watching the interaction between Rogue and Cap gave me the same feelings and vibes when Cyclops confronted Cap during AvX. If I recall correctly, Uncanny Avengers was spawned from it, and Rogue was on the team. I thought it was pretty cool.
The thing with Spider-Man and MJ is that this was in X-men 97. Spider-Man TAS ended in 98, so an argument can be made that the plot thread about MJ wasn't answered from that cameo because it took place in 97.
iirc de mayo confirmed that that MJ was the real one
@@badnoodlez Confirmed she was the real MJ, however if that scene took place in 97 and not 98, then it wouldn't really matter and the plot thread wouldn't be answered.
@@Decaposaurusis the narrative date for spiderman confirmed 98 or just when it aired?
@@mikeb5067 I would assume they are both and the same considering it was done for X-Men. X-men ended in Sept 97, hence X-men 97. Spider-man ended in Jan 98. Maybe they will bring it back and call it Spider-Man 98.
also iron man suit isnt his latest model its actually the 97 version so the plot isn't addressed which is an L and W cause spiderman
What I liked about x men 97 cameos is that it shows the audience the marvel is big but it's active. Other stuff is happening as a consequence of huge actions like Genosha getting the halo reach treatment and Magneto EMP earth and bastion just existing with his transhuman sentinels.
8:37 Amen. A childhood imagination visualized. You can’t do that making up stuff to appeal to the masses. They haven’t made up their minds yet.
They keep coming close but you can FEEL the restraint, you can sense the executive suits holding them back. I hope X-Men '97 taught them that they can really let loose and go buckwild 🙏
The reemergence of Cyclops has been awesome to witness.
I was in middle school when MCU movies started and graduated college when it was wrapping up
You're the best ❤
Agree 100%!!! Done with care, and the right story tellers , these next phases of Marvel could easily be their best work and crush any box office records set by the MCU thus far. Cautiously optimistic after X-Men 97. Great video sir, keep them coming!!
This. I think you kinda hit the nail on the head there Rob.
Your a uk fan awesome brother!
I wish they got johnathan hickman to be the lead writer for the MCU and plan out and oversee the entire phase of movies, imagine the movies done with his writing quality and style.
Totally agree!
Question, what happened if Wolverine also took the super soilder serum ? Would his healing nullify the serum or would he become even stronger ??!!
The lesson Marvel needs to learn: You don't F with the Juggernaut
I completely agree with you, and yes.....I'm scared too 😩
Finally finished X-men 97, was absolutely fantastic
I have no clue how Rob has NOT been hired by marvel as an advisor
That wide world building and connectivity is one of the most essential things of the MCU. The excitement of seeing everything finally revealed to be connected then the big crossover events after years of build-ups. They should always do that. That's also what made people got into and love Marvel movies even those who haven't watched or enjoyed superhero movies before. Even some of those people got deeper by looking at comic books. If they end up narrowing the X-Men stories well that would be disappointing because we already have Fox universe. Why were people so exited the day Marvel finally get the rights back for X-Men and Fantastic Four? It's everything you have said in this video. They need to make the X-Men truly feels as a part of the larger MCU
Marvel should revive and conclude more classic animated series.
Agree %2000
The best stories are the ones that talk to other stories.
I agree with you
It's a good fear! And youre not alone in it Rob.
What the first ten years demonstrate is that it's the slow build that creates the largest wave.
That and leaning into mystery. Indirect nods to old and new fans alike.
I dont blame them, instant gratification is an epidemic in these times, but if they really want to make an impact for the next ten years... they have to take things slow.
Let us live the moment.
They are literally taking things slow. They are building up so many characters for us to have care for them, getting to know them and seeing their story arcs. The difference is the earlier phase has the team up films which has been missing in the MCU.
Nice.
I really felt 9 years old again when I was watching this. Thank you Marvel, for putting out some good animation finally. Next stop: Spider-Man '98. They already did a "Secret Wars" arc back in 97-98. So much to build off of. The end with Spidey and Madam Web preparing traveling the multiverse to find Mary-Jane has bothered me since I was 10 years old 😂
So many possibilities to explore!! I love the X-Men 👍😎
Couldn’t agree more
They are absolutely gonna do this not because they don't trust the audience but they don't have the writers to write on the level to make those stories digestible on screen for the live action audience.
Yea this series showed the weakness of Marvels writing team. Even in 10 episodes they cant tell a cohesive story. Whole thing was rushed with massive holes
@@chiquita683 ur trippin
@@chiquita683I find it odd that ppl seem to think 97 feels rushed because to me it feels much more similar and accurate to the pacing that exists in the comics and I loved that. I hate having my time wasted with glamour shots of the actors or side plots and romances that have poorly developed stakes and dramas. I agree there are a few holes but it’s not a problem to me when the core story they are telling is one that I’m invested in and it’s moving at a pace where I feel I need to hold on to my seat. That’s how comics make me feel and no other product came as close to that as 97.
@tinnitusthenight5545 the last 2 episodes definitely felt rushed. Bastion went from super imposing and intimidating to a "bad guy of the week" in 2 episodes because the pacing was off
@@chiquita683It’s certainly not rushed but you’re right that there’s some plot holes. I believe due to that reason and making up to 10 episodes as opposed to 20-23 episodes for the season, I can see how it can be perceived as rushed.
For me what I really loved about X-Men '97 was the earnestness of the show, which created grit as a byproduct. And that really sold the audience on the X-Men's plight, and that gave the stakes weight. Like you stated with Capt America's storyline, there's been this anti-mutant sentiment undercurrent throughout the Marvel universe that doesn't exist currently in the MCU, in fact it likely exists in a whole other dimension of the multiverse, and multiverse stories tend to flatten stakes. And that is the opposite of X-Men 97
I know this. They only get one shot, better not miss that chance to blow.
I agree very largely with you Rob. I think the biggest problem with Marvel since End game has been the ignoring of already established major events. There are countless stories that can be adapted to movies with so much great history and complexity that they could make 100+ more movies. The introduction of new characters without a larger history is an aspect that has taken such a large foothold in the Marvel universe that the good stories have drowned under it.
Some of the larger plot lines that I would like to see in the future are: Age of Apocalypse, Planet Hulk, Secret wars, Spiderman clone saga and Avengers vs. X-Men
