    circular motion with those kinds of stones will cause low spots in the middle and render them useless much quicker than long strokes

    • @abefroman9565
      @abefroman9565 8 лет назад +18

      Rarely is it necessary to use circular rotations when sharpening an edged tool. It's largely pointless. It will cause unnecessary wear on your stones and cause the alignment of the steel on the apex to be irregular. Pick a direction and make long strokes going in that direction making sure that you hit the entirety of the edge going the length of the blade with each pass. Not only are circular passes bad for your stones - bad for your final edge keenness - it also leaves a very uneven scratch pattern. Meaning that your final bevel finish won't be anywhere near as clear as it should be.

    • @silveronthehill
      @silveronthehill 8 лет назад +9

      Abe Froman almost every hone master (straight razor) I've seen acknowledges circular honing as legitimate. circular passes were how I was taught to sharpen my knives back in boy scouts. like most things it's practice and personal preference. the long straight, smooth stroke is very good for finishing, but circular is great for the shaping and initial sharpening.

      there are no bevels just crown and the whole finish is like a mirror..

    I use an axe daily - been using the same on for around 24 years - Mever shaepened it - don't plan to. Here's why. When splitting a tiugh piece of wood like Beech or Cherry, I don't want the Axe to penetrate unless it is going all the way. Otherwise you can spend 50 - 75% of your time and energy trying to get the axe out of the unsplit piece. If the edge is a little dull it doesn't pebetrate quite so much, but still splits great when you find the "seam". Just my way, everyone has their own.

      Not so much confusing as being confused by the title of the video - note the word chopping anywhere? So when i spent my time watching this, i thought - I may learn something to help me. Well done video - just not what i thought. I have been to the local woodsman contest and seen chopping axes both up close and in action. Amazing - Just not what i use an ax for, as I usually use a saw for cutting a tree down or bucking it up. Thanks for the reply!

      a 24 year old axe that has been used every day & never sharpened? some people don't sharpen splitting axes for the same reason as yours, however if you want to get the most out of your axe & build things in the woods or skin an animal then it has to be sharp. Also your axe must look like an Ork battle axe 24 years & no love poor thing.

    Forums suck, true. These guided systems, as accurate as they are, ruin convex edges, aka axes.
    I use Japanese water stones for all my blades and tools. A few years back I committed to learning the art of Japanese sharpening and can say it was absolutely worth it, there's nothing I can't sharpen to shaving perfection by hand. I believe anyone could do it if they commit.

    • @jacksondutch1797
      @jacksondutch1797 8 лет назад +2

      I think you are right...an axe needs to be convex all the way down to the edge which can only be done by hand.

    • @0Plants0
      @0Plants0 8 лет назад +2

      yes definitely, a convex edge can take many times more force without rolling the edge. while one might assume convex edges on traditional tools was only a result of hand sharpening (which naturally creates convex edges), it has an important function on an axe specifically, which is brute force on the edge. the convex shape gives the cutting edge foundation

    • @W_H_K
      @W_H_K 8 лет назад +3

      0Plants0 Indeed, all one need do is picture the Roman arch for its strength; it was designed for a reason and the same applies to bevels.
      For others reading this:
      The easiest bevel to sharpen (by hand) is convex as one simply follows the grind ("guide") already established (if no desire to alter it exists), listen to the sounds of the blade and stones (which is specific to each) , and feel the degrees (by intuition which comes from much practice). This all becomes an instant and single process with practice.
      The most difficult bevels to sharpen by hand are secondary V edges on flatground blades and considering 1) most people us V-edge flatground blades, and 2) they are the most difficult to learn, this would account for the misconception that freehand sharpening is difficult when it is not.
      People can buy Japanese King stones quite cheaply, they need not buy Chosera or Ha-No-Kuromaku as a beginner/learner. They can also learn to sharpen very well from RUclips and free ebooks alone.

    • @bob_frazier
      @bob_frazier 8 лет назад

      Hey Tiwar, Can you say some more about this? Do you mean a convex curve running from the face down to the bit edge or are you saying a convex bit profile from toe to heel? I think you mean the former, but I'd not heard that an axe's edge should be convex - and yet someone else downthread mentioned "convex" as well. I've had axes with too thin a profile - they stick in soft wood. Convex would seem to me to be dangerous as it would tend to glance off more. (??) Thanks.

    • @W_H_K
      @W_H_K 8 лет назад +1

      Bob Frazier Yes, just like on a knife bevel. I can only speak personally of Gränsfors Bruk and Wetterlings as that is what I own as far as axes go. However, it (convex) is in fact safer with no glancing.
      I suggest to google image search (in large size pics) axes and check out the edges, faces, profiles etc of some good Swedish axes such as the above two brands and also various quality axes from whatever country you live in as axes can be different depending on the geographical location due to tree species and density etc.

    • @chucksherron
      @chucksherron 8 лет назад +3

      Did you really think that it was possible for an axe to be to sharp?
      Now an axe can be very sharp but be ground with an improper bevel that is not durable but never to sharp.

    • @slappyhappy14231
      @slappyhappy14231 8 лет назад +2

      I'm thinking that if the axe is that sharp, when you start chopping or splitting wood that the fine edge would bend over and the axe lose its sharpness fast.
      If so, another way to put the question would be is: Will a slightly less sharp axe retain more sharpness in the long run?

    • @volundrfrey896
      @volundrfrey896 8 лет назад +7

      It's a rhetorical question.

    • @TheTopMostDog
      @TheTopMostDog 7 лет назад

      I mean, if you do too sharp an edge, you might run into issues with it getting stuck. Technique can get you out of this, but a more convex edge would help with this (and edge strength), regardless.

    • @ninjahombrepalito1721
      @ninjahombrepalito1721 7 лет назад

      Honestly, I think it depends more on the edge angle than the edge sharpness. And yes, it can have a big angle and still be very sharp. Just like it could have a 20 degree angle and have a ball edge.

    A fireman’s axe can be too sharp. Those are bludgeoning tools and not chopping tools. My lesson after an afternoon of
    sharpening the department’s axes was to have the Captain hand me a stone to round them over.

      + i_Cryostorm Perhaps, but an axe cuts by his angle and force (which usually depends of the user) much as his sharpening. The usual angle for this tools (and "machetes" too) is 45º. If you sharp it like a knife the edge tends to be too weak.

    • @sirdeakia
      @sirdeakia 8 лет назад +13

      I think the problem is cutting the things. If an axe is way too sharp, it can cut too well and get stuck into whatever the fireman was trying to cut through. Getting your tools stuck in a fire may not be the best case scenario.

    Dear Wranglerstar,
    The splice in the stroke rod (?) is loose. Check at 2:04 when you set the stone down on the axe. It is barely noticeable, but nevertheless... Right between the stone and the swivel head. I'm pretty sure that is a splice. I feel like if it is used without being snug the threads could be damaged due to the slop in the connection.
    Cheers!

    • @Glenn056
      @Glenn056 8 лет назад +4

      Jonhy Sinapellido a blade being able to shave hair is an easy test to test the sharpness of the edge. Next level is whether does the hairs fly off the arm ( "hair-popping sharpness"). Even sharper is whether can a blade whittle or slice a free hanging hair.

    • @XXfAzEXXXXd0gEXX
      @XXfAzEXXXXd0gEXX 7 лет назад

      Christopher Lefont it's pretty easy to cut paper and it's not a great test. If a knife can shave then it means its pretty damn sharp and plus you don't need to waste paper. People have been shaving with straight razors for millennia which are pretty much knives with ridiculously thin and sharp edges. It's kinda hard to slice yourself on accident while shaving.

    • @XXfAzEXXXXd0gEXX
      @XXfAzEXXXXd0gEXX 7 лет назад

      Christopher Lefont I mean a knife does have to be sharp to do that but it only has to have a decent edge, it doesn't have to be super sharp. phonebook paper is a better test but I still prefer shaving. And it's really hard to cut yourself while doing a shaving test. You have to have a muscle spasm or have someone slam you in the arm or something. you aren't just gonna accidentally go from a shaving/scraping motion to a slicing motion.

      rewtuser This is true.

    • @eachday9538
      @eachday9538 8 лет назад +2

      rewtuser You could still use a jig for your actual edge and round off the shoulders free hand, or perhaps with a jig lowering it in stages to create a faceted convex shape and then just take of the shoulders of the facets free hand. Not necessary to get a super sharp edge, but might be handy in developing an easily repeatable process that can be precisely tweeked in response to the edge performance of various tools.

    I personally love my fiscars axe, I’m not a lumberjack,
    I use & abuse this axe,
    & no way near put as good of an edge as you demonstrated ,
    But It will still cut like no tomorrow, I like that it’s lightweight & easy to swing with one handed.
    Great economic handle...
    Imagine how great it would perform if I actually sharpened it as well as you did here.

    I have found that file sharp works just fine. It's also easy to take a file with you into the woods, as well as have it handy around any other work area. I don't need to have an ax sharp enough to shave with. I can just as easy go pick up some cheap razors from Walmart. Look, I know that there are some things that you can do with a super sharp ax that is not as easy with a file sharp ax, but for normal ax use it's overkill. Just my opinion.
    By the way, I really like Wranglerstar's videos because he brings up a lot of things to think about. Good video Wranglerstar.

    I absolutely love Fisker‘s they’re super cheap extremely easy to sharpen and hold an edge OK and you can get them super sharp fast because they have a softer steel if you’re cutting softwood such as cedar and pine their perfect they’re OK on Oak but you will have to sharpen afterwards and if you ever break a Fisker‘s just send it in and you get a new one that’s better than replacing the handle in my opinion

    Dad always used an Arkansas stone, and finished with a soft fine India stone. He went out with the USDA's survey crew for his first day of working on a survey crew, and decided to sharpen their axes for them. They were not impressed, and told him to "Go chop some dirt, and dull those down a bit, before someone loses a finger". Sharpening knives and to a point axes is one skill I owe my father dearly for sharing with me. I am better with plane irons and chisels than dad, but without the fundamentals he showed me, the learning curve would have been much greater. Fiskars is the ax you chain to your 4x4 so if it gets stolen or damaged it's no great loss. Some Basques bought some of our land, and one of them made these awesome axes that fit onto the handles like a pick or grubbing hoe, or maddox. We took one up to be sharpened, and the blacksmith's grandson made us a new ax from one of his grandfather's old blanks. Then we had dinner, and enjoyed an evening of music, talk, and listening to the stars chime. I do a double bevel that clears chips. I do it on chisels, & plane irons, and I have a different one for axes. I can also work wonders with a chainsaw file too.

    Hi Wranglerstar,
    I'm a simple axe beginner (AND no forum writer of reader whetsoever!). I read a few books about axes (and thats maybe more than some people did ;-) but what I alway's understood is that sharpening an axe (or ax?!) should always be more or less concave?! And with this marvelous sharpening tool(!!!) you alway's put an bevel on it, right? Opinel (from France) and Herder (from Germany) knives don't have an bevel either. But not concave. Can't explain.
    Maybe it is nice to show how you can sharpen an plane knife and/or an chisel with this machine too. Same way?!
    All the best, with warm greetings (from the Netherlands).
    Martijn.
