The Bob Ross of sharpening tools
Ikr
He kinda of sounds a little like him too...
Chris Arrambidez and over here we have a nice fluffy axe
Shane Stackpole Over here we're going to mark the sharpest part, it'll be our little secret
we'll sharpen two axes because everyone needs a friend
I don't shave often
But when i do
I always use an axe
shadow336k the most manly man in the world
#canadian
shadow336k f
So gentle I can use it in the land down under.
I use a stihl
just watched 12 minutes of a guy sharpening an axe.. and i got zero interest in that normally.. i dont even own an axe XD
Same XD
And same here.
HupfDole87 same I just get bored
I'm not an axe enthusiast, but I found this profoundly interesting. Kind of like Primitive Technology's channel. I don't work with these kinds of tools, but learning how to craft and maintain them seems like a really good skill to have if the need arises.
Wingy
indeed. thats probably why i kept watching it till the end ^^
I might have to invest in an axe to shave my legs
Same bruh
Why am I watching some random dude sharpen his axes
Same here, man. I don't know how i got here, but i love it...
Mr Space pants holy whit you need to learn how to spell
Nathan Drake I get he likes sharpening things but y axis?
It's fun
why not? not everything has a purpose
What has my university life come too. i have assignments and im watching a man sharpen an axe
lol same
Youu should've payed attention to English becsuse it's to, not too.
Ninjaah you should have payed attention to english because its you not youu also its because not becsuse
this is the ideal life
SURFY TURFY-MLBB it is "it's" not "its"
circular motion with those kinds of stones will cause low spots in the middle and render them useless much quicker than long strokes
Rarely is it necessary to use circular rotations when sharpening an edged tool. It's largely pointless. It will cause unnecessary wear on your stones and cause the alignment of the steel on the apex to be irregular. Pick a direction and make long strokes going in that direction making sure that you hit the entirety of the edge going the length of the blade with each pass. Not only are circular passes bad for your stones - bad for your final edge keenness - it also leaves a very uneven scratch pattern. Meaning that your final bevel finish won't be anywhere near as clear as it should be.
Abe Froman
Abe Froman almost every hone master (straight razor) I've seen acknowledges circular honing as legitimate. circular passes were how I was taught to sharpen my knives back in boy scouts. like most things it's practice and personal preference. the long straight, smooth stroke is very good for finishing, but circular is great for the shaping and initial sharpening.
Jon Simmons
His posts were such garbled up messes that I'm not sure if he was talking to you or if he was talking to me...? Either way he has 35 years of sharpening axes with poor form so obviously he's the end all and be all of sharpening knowledge and arguing with him makes you a yuppie.
What a fucking tool.
Competition Axmen have the correct concept for an axe Abe
there are no bevels just crown and the whole finish is like a mirror..
Having a good piece of steel is required.
This is an example of why men are happier in life just enjoying the simplest things!
This guy makes me wanna buy this product. I don't even own an axe, he puts so much passion into it
I've owned (and returned) two Fiskars hatchets within the span of a few days. I couldn't believe how soft the steel was, but haven't seen this mentioned too often in reviews. It's reassuring to have a seasoned craftsman confirm my suspicions.
I really enjoy watching your videos and I am learning so much in the process.
I use an axe daily - been using the same on for around 24 years - Mever shaepened it - don't plan to. Here's why. When splitting a tiugh piece of wood like Beech or Cherry, I don't want the Axe to penetrate unless it is going all the way. Otherwise you can spend 50 - 75% of your time and energy trying to get the axe out of the unsplit piece. If the edge is a little dull it doesn't pebetrate quite so much, but still splits great when you find the "seam". Just my way, everyone has their own.
Your confusing a chopping axe and a splitting axe/ maul.
Curtis Harrington
Not so much confusing as being confused by the title of the video - note the word chopping anywhere? So when i spent my time watching this, i thought - I may learn something to help me. Well done video - just not what i thought. I have been to the local woodsman contest and seen chopping axes both up close and in action. Amazing - Just not what i use an ax for, as I usually use a saw for cutting a tree down or bucking it up. Thanks for the reply!
Gs Wovoka it doesn't hurt to bring back the edge a little even if you are splitting wood!
a 24 year old axe that has been used every day & never sharpened? some people don't sharpen splitting axes for the same reason as yours, however if you want to get the most out of your axe & build things in the woods or skin an animal then it has to be sharp. Also your axe must look like an Ork battle axe 24 years & no love poor thing.
WHY DIDNT YOU TELL ME BEFORE I JOINED SCOUTS, I COULDNT CHOP A DAMN TREE FOR ALMOST 2 YEARS, I FOLLOWED YOUR METHOD AND CHOPPED IT FASTER THAN EVER
it is always amazing to listen to or look at people who genuinely love their job.
Forums suck, true. These guided systems, as accurate as they are, ruin convex edges, aka axes.
I use Japanese water stones for all my blades and tools. A few years back I committed to learning the art of Japanese sharpening and can say it was absolutely worth it, there's nothing I can't sharpen to shaving perfection by hand. I believe anyone could do it if they commit.
I think you are right...an axe needs to be convex all the way down to the edge which can only be done by hand.
yes definitely, a convex edge can take many times more force without rolling the edge. while one might assume convex edges on traditional tools was only a result of hand sharpening (which naturally creates convex edges), it has an important function on an axe specifically, which is brute force on the edge. the convex shape gives the cutting edge foundation
0Plants0 Indeed, all one need do is picture the Roman arch for its strength; it was designed for a reason and the same applies to bevels.
For others reading this:
The easiest bevel to sharpen (by hand) is convex as one simply follows the grind ("guide") already established (if no desire to alter it exists), listen to the sounds of the blade and stones (which is specific to each) , and feel the degrees (by intuition which comes from much practice). This all becomes an instant and single process with practice.
The most difficult bevels to sharpen by hand are secondary V edges on flatground blades and considering 1) most people us V-edge flatground blades, and 2) they are the most difficult to learn, this would account for the misconception that freehand sharpening is difficult when it is not.
People can buy Japanese King stones quite cheaply, they need not buy Chosera or Ha-No-Kuromaku as a beginner/learner. They can also learn to sharpen very well from RUclips and free ebooks alone.
Hey Tiwar, Can you say some more about this? Do you mean a convex curve running from the face down to the bit edge or are you saying a convex bit profile from toe to heel? I think you mean the former, but I'd not heard that an axe's edge should be convex - and yet someone else downthread mentioned "convex" as well. I've had axes with too thin a profile - they stick in soft wood. Convex would seem to me to be dangerous as it would tend to glance off more. (??) Thanks.
Bob Frazier Yes, just like on a knife bevel. I can only speak personally of Gränsfors Bruk and Wetterlings as that is what I own as far as axes go. However, it (convex) is in fact safer with no glancing.
I suggest to google image search (in large size pics) axes and check out the edges, faces, profiles etc of some good Swedish axes such as the above two brands and also various quality axes from whatever country you live in as axes can be different depending on the geographical location due to tree species and density etc.
I grew a beard and donned red flannel watching this video.
*_I'm Ready._*
So whats the answer? Can an axe be too sharp? Love the videos but the titles not so much lol
Did you really think that it was possible for an axe to be to sharp?
Now an axe can be very sharp but be ground with an improper bevel that is not durable but never to sharp.
I'm thinking that if the axe is that sharp, when you start chopping or splitting wood that the fine edge would bend over and the axe lose its sharpness fast.
If so, another way to put the question would be is: Will a slightly less sharp axe retain more sharpness in the long run?
It's a rhetorical question.
I mean, if you do too sharp an edge, you might run into issues with it getting stuck. Technique can get you out of this, but a more convex edge would help with this (and edge strength), regardless.
Honestly, I think it depends more on the edge angle than the edge sharpness. And yes, it can have a big angle and still be very sharp. Just like it could have a 20 degree angle and have a ball edge.
Bee Movie -> Hot Knife -> Axe Sharpening
Aspirin Damage same
Aspirin Damage
oh...wow..Omg.😮
Aspirin Damage I too come via way of hot knife
RUclips Magic, don't you love it?
Aspirin Damage same
I guess I need to break down and buy one of those.... I have to confess I'm an axe abuser ..
I dislike the forums also.. seems like sometimes they like to write just to read their own words.. Kinda like my ole Grandfather use to say when I was buying a hunting dog when I was a kid and reading the brochure.. He said "Son you have to remember paper will sit still you can write anything on it" about the same on the internet
Here's to Grandfather's wisdom!
I know you all came for 11:30 You're welcome :P
Rami think you so much
Actually this is not quite true. I found the procedure very interesting. The shaving is just the test part of it, and actually it's very common. I use this myself sometimes (just sometimes, because I don't want to look like him :-D)
Nathan Higgins thank not think you
We need more people like you!!
Rami o
when i have a axe that needs sharpening i just get the angle grinder with a flapwheel with 40 grit.
I'm sure your results are great,
Wranglerstar Not sure if sarcasm or not.
+Wranglerstar love it haha
Wranglerstar decent, my hydraulic press is more effective though.
i just found the other day that my grandfather used to have a stone wheel thing
You know a tool is great when it can make Wranglerstar proud to show off his Fiskers.
You need to do a vid of you waking up in the morning and shaving with your favorite axe.
Just got a new Granfors Bruks small forest axe, and man, that thing is shaving sharp! I love their axes!! Great vid, as always! Cheers!
No mention in the video of "Can An Axe Be Too Sharp", so what was the point of that title?
Redblade Shutup
Thanks!
I might be lost in the sea of comments but whoever sees this i hope you have a great day
I found you in they ocean
An I am UR first comment
And i hope the same for you!
Man, these videos are soothing as all get out. Just real good simple stuff, not too much narration, good filming.
Using a sharpie for sharpening?
That's a sharp idea.
Liam 4.0 i hope you know where the door is at
*Liam 4.0* That was pointless. I could have made a way edgier pun than you. you take too many shortcuts.
Thanks Cody
I have been DREAMING about a sharpening system like this.
Now I have a film to work with
I will have to make my own crude sharpener like that. I am constantly looking to improve my profile...
Blade profile..
keep up the good work
A fireman’s axe can be too sharp. Those are bludgeoning tools and not chopping tools. My lesson after an afternoon of
sharpening the department’s axes was to have the Captain hand me a stone to round them over.
incase you hurt someone i guess.
+ i_Cryostorm Perhaps, but an axe cuts by his angle and force (which usually depends of the user) much as his sharpening. The usual angle for this tools (and "machetes" too) is 45º. If you sharp it like a knife the edge tends to be too weak.
I think the problem is cutting the things. If an axe is way too sharp, it can cut too well and get stuck into whatever the fireman was trying to cut through. Getting your tools stuck in a fire may not be the best case scenario.
sirdeakia surely not, in those cases you want to give a clean shot once and once again non stop!
halnywiatr
I will likely never need to sharpen an axe and if I do I almost certainly won't have one of those tools. but some how, I find watching a tool go from rusted to gleaming REALLY satisfying.
HERE'S JOHNNY!!!
*Screams*
-OMG! LOOK AT HIS AXE, ITS SO BEATIFUL!
This guy is like the Bob Ross of the knife sharpening world! XD His voice is soft and the way he compliments his work is like, "Look at that! Man Oh man, that is incredible."
I finally found a way to properly shave my legs for summer!!!! 😂😂😂😂✌️❤️
That is a great sharpener....so smooth ...looks good ....great job
I like how he's still missing hair from the last episode. lol
Dear Wranglerstar,
The splice in the stroke rod (?) is loose. Check at 2:04 when you set the stone down on the axe. It is barely noticeable, but nevertheless... Right between the stone and the swivel head. I'm pretty sure that is a splice. I feel like if it is used without being snug the threads could be damaged due to the slop in the connection.
Cheers!
re-upload?
Giles Docherty I'm guessing it was a mistake to upload it yesterday haha I thought to myself when I saw it "oww two clips in one day, this is special" then it was deleted.
Giles Docherty you can set times when things become public. Guessing it wasn't set.
Thank you, Cody, for your positive review! You` re doing great job!
You seriously remind me of watching Bob Ross when I was a child. I can imagine you saying this:
"We're are going to use this 1000 grit stone and sand down the edge in circular motion like fluffy clouds. We normally will start off with a lower grit stone but that's our little secret. And you tell ANYONE of our little secret, I will come over your house and I will cut you."
I actually really liked my Gerber hatchet. I was hiking on the AT once and handed it to my brother only to see a few minutes later that he was hitting it off of a rock because he liked seeing the sparks. Needless to say I spent a very long time fixing the dings out of the blade. Cool video. I wish I had this tool back then.
How old was your brother?
I’ve been watching Cody since the beginning and everyone talks about ‘What a great guy Cody is’ and ‘he’s such a good Christian & family man’
But anyone who’s been watching for a while knows this guy always has an axe to grind with someone.
this machine is a thing of beauty!
so relaxing to se in action!
axe went from zero to hero
aaronpiper92 no it went from hero to super hero
Nah it's still trash, just sharp trash
Ah haha!!! My husband likes this tool!
Like I said on the Knipex video, I’m always looking for tools he would love! We were moving last year and tools was the last thing I could grab his attention and pick his brain on... I wanted to find out what or which tool would be something he would use allot and enjoy.
So I revisited this nifty sharpener and he LOVES this!
BingO!!!! Him and I always shop for each other after Christmas. We like to spoil others before each other. And I can’t wait to see his face when he opens the TSPROF Knife Sharpener!!!!
Happy Holidays to you and yours! We really love your channel!
still not spending $300 for a knife sharpener.
rather make one yourself
Build one youself. There are lots of drawings on the internet from the button to the top.
150 each to Wranglestar !!!
It's currently 1 In the morning and this is very entertaining... why am I like this
God, I love sharpening anything. It's so good to see such a dull tool regain it's sharpness.
What should I test my sharp axe on oh I know my arm
Liam Brown you're not a knife guy, are you?
Can you explain please? :)
Jonhy Sinapellido a blade being able to shave hair is an easy test to test the sharpness of the edge. Next level is whether does the hairs fly off the arm ( "hair-popping sharpness"). Even sharper is whether can a blade whittle or slice a free hanging hair.
Christopher Lefont it's pretty easy to cut paper and it's not a great test. If a knife can shave then it means its pretty damn sharp and plus you don't need to waste paper. People have been shaving with straight razors for millennia which are pretty much knives with ridiculously thin and sharp edges. It's kinda hard to slice yourself on accident while shaving.
Christopher Lefont I mean a knife does have to be sharp to do that but it only has to have a decent edge, it doesn't have to be super sharp. phonebook paper is a better test but I still prefer shaving. And it's really hard to cut yourself while doing a shaving test. You have to have a muscle spasm or have someone slam you in the arm or something. you aren't just gonna accidentally go from a shaving/scraping motion to a slicing motion.
is it soviet built? or just Russian made? ;) Better be careful otherwise the people that sent it to you might go to the gulag
It's Russian made. He reviewed it in another video. (It's super good!)
Get what i'm laying down, Da?
Да.
мы не всегда посылать людей в ГУЛАГ только непокорных
Don't worry! It's "Like the fist of Stalin! ...Up your arse..."
Fiskars is a finnish company.
Definitely the most nerdy axe sharpening I've ever seen! love it :-)
I guess that's why they call it a SHARP-ie! ... no? okay
You
I thought that too
Lmfao thought u were Dashie wid the punz lol
Speed Stacking Maniac at least you speed stack
Wow, didn't know SANDVIK made axe heads as well as tooling for CNC. You learn something new every day..
I don't know much about axes, so maybe someone could enlighten me, but i was under the impression that ideally an axe edge has kind of an appleseed cross section that is basically a zero edge with no secondary bevel?
rewtuser This is true.
rewtuser You could still use a jig for your actual edge and round off the shoulders free hand, or perhaps with a jig lowering it in stages to create a faceted convex shape and then just take of the shoulders of the facets free hand. Not necessary to get a super sharp edge, but might be handy in developing an easily repeatable process that can be precisely tweeked in response to the edge performance of various tools.
rewtuser Sorry, I realised I didn't really answer your question, ha ha. Ignore me, I'm just thinking aloud, so to speak.
Everyday Adventure
rewtuser ok axes are used by trees to cut themselves.
507 in and I subscribed. Because I can tell these are going to be worth watching for entertainment and education.
this video was just trying to sell me a product, he didn't even answer the question that is the title of the video
Congratulations, you're the only one who noticed
Thats for you to figure out at the end of this video
Selling what product these are quality made videos
That's called a rhetorical question. Obviously an axe just like a knife can never be too sharp.
I personally love my fiscars axe, I’m not a lumberjack,
I use & abuse this axe,
& no way near put as good of an edge as you demonstrated ,
But It will still cut like no tomorrow, I like that it’s lightweight & easy to swing with one handed.
Great economic handle...
Imagine how great it would perform if I actually sharpened it as well as you did here.
That sharpener is the best piece of engineering i have ever seen.I need some serious practice on sharpening blades.
with my work we use all sorts of chisels and axes for work . we will sharpen to a mirror finish and they are very very sharp. . I have a lot of knowledge of axes with different qualities and grades. I also really like the fiskers as it is a great splitter for camping and also not that expensive to buy.
Ну блин, теперь не нарадуется....Скоро будет как бритый хрюндель...Такое ощущение, что он с луны упал...
The sharpening sound of the axe gives me ASMR
I'm not entirely sure why but its always strangely pleasing watching someone do stuff like this.
this is pretty neat! So with a edge like that, especially with a Fiskars, is it more prone to rolling when you split with it?
You can tell what order he recorded his videos based on where he's missing hair on his arm.
Kuli24000 a man who sharpens knives and axes all the time have bald spots on their arm they are testing sharpness
Wranglerstar, Do you have a video on building the carpenter table?
Thanks
no
No=first
So happy you used the tsprof. I have one and i run in the same problem. I wanted to use it for my axe but failed at a solution. Bdw what is the adjustibel rear i see? Mine has a other one
why did he re-upload
Wranglerstar, thanks. Good adaptation of the tool but my suggestion would be for you to find a better way to secure the axe to minimise the the risk of establishing a different angle of bevel on each side. Some wood-working clamp arrangement perhaps?
CAN A KATANA BE TOO SHARP
You are so stupid
Yes, it breaks easier
i made my own jig with a 2x2, file, broom stick and an eye hole, works pretty well for roughing the bevel out
not gonna lie...if you swap the coarse stone for something else....it can replace a woman...just saying...
and attach the opposite end to a sawzall so you don't even hafta use your hands ; )
Stephen Smith pure genius
I have a similar sharpening rig, make sure you use that stone on ther evenly from end to end or else youll get a convex surface in the middle of the stone and then you wont have a consistent angle when you sharpen
11:30 all his hair is already shaved off, probably from testing other sharpenings! haha
I have found that file sharp works just fine. It's also easy to take a file with you into the woods, as well as have it handy around any other work area. I don't need to have an ax sharp enough to shave with. I can just as easy go pick up some cheap razors from Walmart. Look, I know that there are some things that you can do with a super sharp ax that is not as easy with a file sharp ax, but for normal ax use it's overkill. Just my opinion.
By the way, I really like Wranglerstar's videos because he brings up a lot of things to think about. Good video Wranglerstar.
Dude, Stop!
Every time I see You use this thing I start thinking how i need one.
I use a flat file and a ceramic cup and I get it extremely sharp The main thing is being good at your angles and consistency I can glide it across my arm and not feel any resistance and it just pops it off it’s weirdly satisfying
Why is this in my recommended?
I absolutely love Fisker‘s they’re super cheap extremely easy to sharpen and hold an edge OK and you can get them super sharp fast because they have a softer steel if you’re cutting softwood such as cedar and pine their perfect they’re OK on Oak but you will have to sharpen afterwards and if you ever break a Fisker‘s just send it in and you get a new one that’s better than replacing the handle in my opinion
ПРОФИЛЬ
Hey Wranglerstar, Can you shed some light on where you bought. I'm digging it.
Can an axe be too sharp? yes/no 12 minutes
Thanks for recommending this I just ordered one and can't wait to use it
So can an axe be too sharp ? o_O
Hello Wranglerstar, i'm new to your videos and i must say i am amazed at your work!
Keep up the nice videos.
How a real man shaves
Iron Dragon ah yes
Really cool sharpening tool.
how the fuck did I get here????
same, i came here from a skyrim video XD
lmao me too. he did get a like and a subscribble from me though
Nimbus fucking same bro
Dante you clicked on the video
same lol its 1 am and I started out watching Melanie Martinez
Where were you able to buy that sharpener .Thanks enjoy your show
the sad thing is, fiskars is considered a high end axe in europe lol
Fatakaf lies. Im from Denmark, and fiskars is standard semi cheap rubbish from the shopping mall...
Well in Germany it has a quite good reputation.
I learned to sharpie the edges years ago. And it’s become just part of sharpening for me.
Like who ever doesn't have an ask
Do you have a machete sharpening video? Thanks for all you do!
a 12 minute 22 second video on how to do a 10second job... get real
Not true it can take hours to get a hair shaving sharp tool and it depends on the edge itself
Dad always used an Arkansas stone, and finished with a soft fine India stone. He went out with the USDA's survey crew for his first day of working on a survey crew, and decided to sharpen their axes for them. They were not impressed, and told him to "Go chop some dirt, and dull those down a bit, before someone loses a finger". Sharpening knives and to a point axes is one skill I owe my father dearly for sharing with me. I am better with plane irons and chisels than dad, but without the fundamentals he showed me, the learning curve would have been much greater. Fiskars is the ax you chain to your 4x4 so if it gets stolen or damaged it's no great loss. Some Basques bought some of our land, and one of them made these awesome axes that fit onto the handles like a pick or grubbing hoe, or maddox. We took one up to be sharpened, and the blacksmith's grandson made us a new ax from one of his grandfather's old blanks. Then we had dinner, and enjoyed an evening of music, talk, and listening to the stars chime. I do a double bevel that clears chips. I do it on chisels, & plane irons, and I have a different one for axes. I can also work wonders with a chainsaw file too.
#TreeLivesMatter
great video! I love your vest. where did you get it?
Hi Wranglerstar,
I'm a simple axe beginner (AND no forum writer of reader whetsoever!). I read a few books about axes (and thats maybe more than some people did ;-) but what I alway's understood is that sharpening an axe (or ax?!) should always be more or less concave?! And with this marvelous sharpening tool(!!!) you alway's put an bevel on it, right? Opinel (from France) and Herder (from Germany) knives don't have an bevel either. But not concave. Can't explain.
Maybe it is nice to show how you can sharpen an plane knife and/or an chisel with this machine too. Same way?!
All the best, with warm greetings (from the Netherlands).
Martijn.
Just saw the have a Wranglerstar kit! wish I could afford it right now!
wait did he even answer the question wheat have i just been hypnotised into watching the entire video wtf an actual genius
Cody, whatever happened with the Prandi axes? I was excited about those I'm sure many other viewers were too. I expected to hear more about them by now.
