I can spend a lot if time watching the birds from my kitchen. Seeing the owl was a treat. A sparrow hawk comes over but I've never seen an owl here. It sounds like you have a lot of wildlife where you live.
I've seen varieties of birds here that I've not seen before - that might be because I have the time and space here or maybe because there are indeed a wider variety of birds. One of the most adorable is the long tailed tit - though I've not yet had a close enough look because they've always been so far away. I also saw something that looked like a wagtail but had a bright yellow underside. I find them fascinating.
@@mymessyplot Long tailed tits are so cute! Little balls of fluff with a long tail. They only come into my garden occasionally in the winter. In the winter they go round in flocks so I`ll look out one minute and there will be a dozen on the feeders, next minute they`re gone. So they may well come in more often but I just don`t happen to be looking at that moment. The other could be a grey wagtail. Do you have a stream or river nearby? They like to live near water and pick around in the shallows feeding on the invertebrates.

I did the same on my shed windows I put wisteria stickers on them. It’s odd how dangerous something we take for granted is to birds. Our always panic our hummingbirds will crash but they are like fighter pilots thank goodness. What a lovely room that is and it will be great for seedlings 😂. Oh how lovely that you get humming birds in your gardens over there! I've only ever seen one on TV or social media. They seem like such delicate little things - and the speed at which they flap their wings is mind boggling to me.

That cat has adopted you whether you like it or not! 😂Maybe you will be able to convince it to become a house cat and live a comfortable life without hunting wildlife. If it does start living with you a brightly coloured collar with a bell could also help reduce its impact on the wildlife? I think your conservatory is looking great now, I love the hanging plants. I use our conservatory for starting seeds in the spring, so useful to have a bright indoor space.
Ah you see the trouble with having her living in the house is that we have a parrot. Her name is Apple and she has no fear of black cats because many years ago she lived with a black cat and they were good friends. My fear is that one day while we aren't paying enough attention, a disaster might happen - this cat is a hunter and my bird has no concept of being wary of something that looks like an old friend. My conservatory is north facing - do you think it would still be ok for starting off seedlings without them getting leggy?
Oh dear yes I see your problem now! If the cat decides your parrot is prey she will always be looking for a chance to pounce. She clearly likes you though, maybe she will find a cosy spot in one of your outbuildings. Do your neighbours feed her too? Hmm I'm not too sure about your conservatory but I suspect they would get leggy - especially if we have another year with lots of grey rainy weather. I think it will make an interesting experiment for your first Spring though!
@@LifeOnTheCroft I know that my two closest neighbours don't feed her but I'm not sure about those further away. She disappeared for three days last week and I was having horrible visions of her being impaled on some barb wire somewhere (which is everywhere around here). But she trotted back one morning as if nothing had happened. For all I know, there might be several farms around here who think she's 'their' cat. I know that the previous owners of this house got her along with her mother a few years ago. The mother decided to go and live at the farm next door but she stayed here. I've given her a box with a cushion in the open barn because I've seen her sleeping in the on top of plastic sacks - I'm happy that she's actually started using it.

@ we are very blessed in that they stay here all year, 😂 but that means Gerald has to change the feeders every hour in height of winter 🥶
