- A historic site, which, despite harbouring natural as well as historical marvels & only popular amongst locals is Ankai Caves & Fort. Even though it has gained popularity amongst offbeat travellers, it still needs to be explored on account of its beautiful surroundings and interesting history.
Ankai Fort is nestled in the Satmala Hills at an elevation of more than 3000 feet in the vicinity of a small town named Manmad. It is a stone fort which is said to have been established thousands of years ago when the region was under the control of the Yadava dynasty.
Ankai caves & hill, holds so many childhood memories for me. Revisiting this small town where I was born, is pure nostalgia. Ankai caves was one of our most regular places to visit for picnics. A small hike up takes you to these Jain caves that have beautiful carvings. These days, few of the caves are kept locked to avoid vandalism. The best time to visit the fort is from Oct to Feb when temperatures are much better.

Since the place is not popular with outside tourists, there are no guides available. However, there are caretakers around. The main guy who had the keys to the place is very knowledgeable & if he finds you appreciate the place with causing destruction, he will open the caves & give you a tour of the place. That's how I got access to the caves with the most carvings. Make sure to give him a generous tip as you would otherwise spend on a guide. He's really nice. Hope this helps.
