    That’s a great video! Thank you! Change the fuel filters! That should help the idle too. Clean all the electrical connecters to all the FI sensors & relays. Light Corrosion on the terminal ends may not let the FI work properly. Sounds like an alternator bearing is howling or the AC bearing clutch assembly. Loud ticking like a lifter isn’t filling up. Oil change may take care of that with Some kind of lifter additive like B&G or Lucas. Thank you again and looking forward to the next one!🏁🏁🏁🏁👍👍👍👍

    Awesome work getting the old Rover running. These are getting very rare even in the U.K due to the climate and rust. Hopefully you will do more work on the rover and get it back on the road. The Lucas electrics are proving to be quite durable as these cars make it past 30-35 years old which is a surprise.

    27:45 Okay here's your problem at this point. I KNOW you (he) should know better than PUMPING A FUEL INJECTED CAR WHEN STARTING IT! As an old senile evil man once said "C'MON MAN!" LOL. You were flooding the thing the whole time by pumping the gas pedal. The only way to make it start after doing that is to Hold the Gas pedal to the floor and not letting off until it revs to at least 4000 RPM. Or so. LOL. THe other troubles besides the fan clutch or the fan itself are that it has vacuum leaks. That's why hes struggling so much at times. The MAF isn't well for sure but Vacuum leaks are so often the reason for troubles. I sure enjoy your channel and great skills! You are fun to watch and I love when you get excited about the cr firing up finally! Thank you for you're

      50 states emissions laws stopped all rover sales in USA. Was an unpopular brand. The Land Rover discovery redesign in the 90’s meant those could sell here and rover split from Land Rover to the end of production the rover was a honda accord part for part with some faux wood interior trim and a top spec being the main difference. Of course the brand died fully in mid 2000. Cars are kinda a thing of yesterday anyway everyone wants crossover suv cars now.

    I believe that is an Vane Air Flow Meter...not a mass air meter. The varying amounts of inrushing air moves the vane inside the meter, which in turn sends a signal back to the ECM so that it can adjust fuel mixture and timing accordingly. I wouldn't mess with it much if it is functional. Even more shocking than the fact it has points is that appears to be the original 60's-era GM "window cap" distributor left over from when that was a 215 cid Buick.

    • @whattherust
      @whattherust  3 года назад

      Right, that would explain the lack of a sensing wire in that sensor. Thanks for the info.

      @@whattherust You're welcome. Also, that loud backfire at 28:28 is a sign that the gods of fuel injection have been angered by your choice of a cheap, inferior brand of starting fluid :-))

    • @brianwhittington5086
      @brianwhittington5086 3 года назад +1

      The SD1 3500 had a Lucas electronic ignition distributor. If it's got points, then it had probably been swapped for an older, or cheaper part as the older ones could fail. Here in the UK, people would swap them for a Rover P5B or P6B model points distributor.

    A lot of parts off the Buick 300 & 340 fit on these.
    Engine wise its just a small block Buick v8 so easy to work on.
    Make sure theres enough transmission fluid in the gearbox and final drive has oil.
    Google is your friend here, in Europe rust is the enemy but that one looks pretty good.

    • @brianwhittington5086
      @brianwhittington5086 3 года назад

      Yes that V8 was originally a Buick unit, only used from around 1959 - 63. Rover bought the manufacturing rights and tooling from GM in the mid 60s. They reworked some of the design, but it stayed in production in various capacities, into the 2000's here in the UK. It's a very popular unit for engine swaps, and with kit car builders. There is a company called Rimmer Brothers 8n Lincoln UK that specialise in anything for Rover SD1, and other Btitish classics. They bought up tons of old SD1 stock parts after production finally ended here, and then at Hindustani Motors in India. You can download their parts catalogues for free, or request them by post.

    • @naradaian
      @naradaian Год назад

      Yup you two guys have called it right. This so called Rover was one of British Leyland last hurrahs and a total rust bucket and as you say the engine is the only good thing about it. My father in law had 2 of them from new via his work but compared to Other executive level cars these were shit and built of what we call over here milk bottle top metal as they and the bumpers crumpled so easily
      The first 20 years of Range Rovers used the same engine much more successfully and would be another source of engine spares should any be needed. Yours has a weird US spec bumper and looks like a second edition version from around 1979-80

  • @pclayton5063
    @pclayton5063 2 года назад

    I bought my 2nd 1980 Rover 3500 in 1986, after returning from Germany. It was sitting on the back of a used car dealers lot. The dealer said it wasn't running right and told me he didn't want to sell it. I insisted though, since I had one in Germany, and loved that car so I bought it and limped it the 45 miles home. The darn car always wanted to run hot and not idle great so I removed all the fuel injection and installed a special Edelbrock intake with a Holley 600cfm carb and it ran a lot better. Then I upgraded the stupid points distributor with an electronic ignition module and it ran better (still wanted to run hot). The original plastic fan I thought was too small so up graded the fan to a GM six blade fan. It helped but still wanted to run hot. Finally ended up having a custom 5 core radiator built for it by a specialist and that seemed to do the trick. The automatic trans was junk too so had to have that rebuilt. A word of advice, always have a fire extinguisher handy, a few butt connectors, and some electrical tape. The ribbon wiring is horrible on these and I had the rear hatch wiring start to smoke on both cars I had. Once I got it close to being reliable, I had my English cousin send me the Euro headlights and surround and the rear spoiler to upgrade the looks. Still didn't trust it though and ended up trading it for a Merc 450 SEL which never broke.

  • @lotharrenz4621
    @lotharrenz4621 Год назад

    as for ignition, many european makers used points to actuate a transistor ignition. then the point only needs occasional adjusting as it only gets like, 3 volts to transfer instead of 7 or 9 as ususal. this has been used up into mid-80's before the car makers got the point of going all induction or hall-sensor on ignitions.
    I don't really know much about english cars here. the broken line by the gas tank looks to me like it's an air vent running from one top of the tank towards the filler cap. if it's open your fuel will vanish and maybe even leak out in a fast-driven corner.

  • @brianwhittington5086

    The original fuel pump on most series 1 SD1 models is a small electric one, located inside the tank. It is mounted at the bottom of the fuel level sender unit. You access it via the L/H rear door, fold the rear seat down and pull up the carpet on the load floor. It's under the large round rubber plug, held in by six cross or hexagon head setscrews, the fuel pipe nut and a wiring plug. Clean off the area of any road dirt and hold the cast pipe outlet as you unscrew the pipe union nut as they can break. The fuel pump gets It's power via the ignition key on starting, but a low oil pressure cut out sensor on the engine oil pump keeps it powered once the engine starts. The pump can stick if unused for a time, but a squirt of WD40 soon frees it up. If it continually cuts out after starting, don't always assume a faulty pump, it can be a failed oil pressure sensor, not maintaining power after starting.

    • @Tasteslikepetrol
      @Tasteslikepetrol 2 года назад +1

      All EFI cars have the pump under the floor, external to the tank. Only the carb cars have it in the tank.

    • @brianwhittington5086
      @brianwhittington5086 2 года назад

      @Tastes Like Petrol My 1985 series 2 VdP V8 runs SU carbs with electronic mixture control, and it has the in tank submerged type petrol pump. Only the Vitesse, VdP Efi, and some export market 3500 V8 with fuel injection had a high pressure pump on petrol models. They're usually reliable, and only start giving problems if you constantly let the tank run very low. The pump draws air on cornering, and runs hot when not fully submerged in fuel.

    Any updates on this car? Have you still got it? If so my advice would be to loose the Lucas fuel injection and go for a Edelbrock 500 carb instead, also change the plugs and leads and a full service then she will be purring like a v8 should.

    • @whattherust
      @whattherust  2 года назад +1

      I have been working on it quite a bit lately, but am stalled due to the master cylinder. They are not available new, and the rebuild kit didn't work, so I am stopped cold. The only option is to buy a booster and master cylinder from a newer model and retrofit it. It is a lot of money for the parts, so I am hesitant about taking the car any further. If I could get brakes, I already found an intake and carb for it but I am thinking it may be time to sell.

    Ok, so call me a dreamer, because I really like to modify all of my cars, but I would really like to pull that 3.5L British-Leyland V8, rebuild it with some custom forged rods and pistons, put some larger fuel injectors in it, install a much larger capacity in-tank fuel pump (with larger gauge wiring and an added relay), have the heads decked and ported with some aftermarket dual valve springs with upgraded retainers, I'd contact ARP and have them fabricate some custom length head studs for it, get some MLS head gaskets for it, have some custom made tubular steel exhaust manifolds with v-band couplers, add a decently sized Precision or Garrett turbocharger (possibly a GT35R), and replace the engine harness and computer with a Haltech unit with a good tune. If possible I'd add a 5 speed manual trans as well, or at least an upgraded 4L80 GM trans. You don't find US delivered Rovers every day, and I've always wanted to build something different like that. Hell, I'm still dying to find a Jensen Interceptor shell to swap a 5.7 or 6.4 Gen III Hemi into and turn it into a road race car like Letty had in Fast and the Furious. I have ALWAYS wanted a Jensen Interceptor. Call me crazy, but they've always been really good looking and cool to me. English made with a Chrysler big block 383.

      @@whattherust Ok just hoping that the rover can be put back on the road and not be used for parts as you mentioned not many came into the country so kind or rare.Also the body looks good for its age can see any major rust issues
      I have two of these rover sd1 that I need to do rust repairs.My two rover sd1 have the online 2600 six engine in them.they were actually fast than the carburettor eight cylinder engine so they had to reduce the inlet manifold diameter to give it less performance otherwise people would be buy the 8 cylinder cars.I do watch you getting cars running again and I would say there is always so satisfaction when you can get a car going after so many years
      Good stuff.

      It is so good to hear someone else in the US has one of these! Mine is doing OK, but I am having a very hard time rebuilding the master cylinder. I can't get the inner piston out, even after removing the retaining pin. I have to get that fixed before I can drive it. I'll have a video posted of the progress to date soon.

      @@whattherust thanks for the response! I had the exact same problem. Took my mechanic weeks of trying to get it out or find a replacement. Ended up ordering a MK2 (post ‘84) master and booster from Rimmer bros. It works in the old car with minimal hammering of the suspension hump in front just so it clears. A real pain. The fuel pump may be the same as the pump fitted to a classic Range Rover which should still have a US parts supply. Does it have an old in-line fuel filter, it will be clogged up with gunk if it does? Hopefully you will get rid of those horrible ugly US mandated headlamps and bumpers 🤢🤢🤮🤮, these were futuristic good looking cars when launched in Europe in 1977 but the US modifications appear to have ruined the styling. A front chin spoiler or valance also makes them look better. Hope you keep the enthusiasm and restore it fully.
