  • What is amateur (ham) radio? I had the opportunity to chat with Helen Shield from ABC Radio Hobart about how amateur radio is flourishing and how I got into amateur radio. I covered my RUclips Channel along with some of the interesting aspects like EME and SOTA in what hopefully will be a great promotional piece for the hobby.

my love for radio stared back in the early 90's and its been growing ever scince! im a newley licensed ham and the love for radio is getting bigger! its amazing to be able to work with what little you have laying around and make it work! my first long distant contact was on 10 meters over 6500 miles away on 100 watts. It's for certain we need to keep radio alive because its what we have when other communications goes down or away!

That was very nice. all over the world Ham radio is growing. I been on around 1980 or so. never herd so many on world wide as now. the pile ups are great. so many kids on the air . boys and girls. back in the 80's and 90's in the US not so many ladies on the air. now 2024 lots of them world wide. young to old . great way to get threw a pile up. get a young lady on the air. she breaks threw a pile up or makes one. I done it with my girlfriend. 73's NY/USA

Very well done! I'd love to make contact with you one day on Air. I'm re-building my radion shack after my interest dropped off in the early 2000's and re-kindled after my friends were getting involved once again, oh and ACMA decided to make the licence $45 for life.

No, the system I had wasn’t big enough for SSB - you need a very large dish and lots of power. We did do it as a club though quite a number of years ago at a local observatory
