  • Join us as we go trackside (and above) the Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad for two days in fall of 2022. Along this former Denver and Rio Grande Western branch, we'll catch sights such as Shalona Lake, Oxbow Park, The Strater Hotel, Hermosa, and finally, the dramatic entrance into Silverton underneath the majestic Needle Mountains of the San Juan Range (of the Rocky Mountains).
    We'll start the first day near Rockwood, just south of Purgatory Ski Area (which is so much better than Telluride, though Texans and trustfunders, stay in Telluride) catching northbound train 463, pulled by K-36 480. Later in the day, we'll see it emerge into Baker's Park and finally departing Silverton homebound to Durango. Two days later (what happened to Saturday, that's a coming feature!) we'll see Big Jack K-37 # 493 on a test run, albeit, one with a revenue train as it helps out K-28 476 for it's test run. But the 476 is dressed up in her early 1970's looks, with a flying 'Rio Grande' on the tender, gold rerailers, and the most important historical detail, that diamond stack! (Cumbres & Toltec was doing its ‘Toltec Rattler Redux’ recreating it’s first photo train from 1972, and Durango played along with its rendition of a 1972 Silverton Train, hence the diamond stack and flying ‘Rio Grande’). So break out your copy of ‘Cinders and Smoke’ (still THE definitive Durango and Silverton guide, though it could be called something else now ) and that worn out vinyl LP of C.W. McCall and enjoy (retro fashion of corduroy not included, but you do you)!
    *Note, this video isn’t as sudden excitement as Strasburg 475 and THAT incident, but hey, this is more fun to watch…

    Incredible. Some of the best drone shots I've ever seen on the D&S. Very cinematic feel to the whole thing. Awesome video.

    Absolutely beautiful-sounding whistle on 493, a Texas & Pacific Longbell 3-chime! Drone footages are all for the money, cinematic-style footages, excellent audio!

    I feel the quality of your videos are somewhere between documentary and movie: your production style picks up detail, character and atmosphere so well. Love it!

    Great job. How did you capture the sound?. Which drone were you using? Also how did you get permission to film where you did or did you do if from a public area and fly the drone in. I get nervous if I can't see mine. :-)

    • @Big_Diehl
      @Big_Diehl  Год назад

      The sound was lifted from the camera that I set on the tripod and matched in post.
      The drone is a Mavic 2 Pro. We're in Uncontrolled Airspace, so no authorization needed. And finally, while it looks like we're far from the drone, everything was done within my sight (this canyon looks bigger on film I swear)...

      @@Big_Diehl Oh it’s pretty good thus far. We had a serious technical (lab) issue that set us back a bit but I’ve done some digital re-working to make it good. Now it’s just down to narration recording. Trying to get one of my VO professionals to do it.
