I already watched like 3 or 4 tutorials before on this parameter thing in Tableau and none of the presenters looked like they knew what they were doing. Nice work!
This "lesson" is a great example of what an excellent teacher @sqlbelle is. First, she offers three different methods for "sheet swapping." Second, and even more importantly, she goes well beyond the mechanics. She explains the "why" as well as the "how." Moreover, she uses several seemingly small techniques to precisely guide the viewer/student. For example, she uses a virtual marker to point arrows or draw circles around the point or area she's referring to. It's much more clear and sticky than cursor waving. As I was trying to learn sheet swapping, I looked at several other videos. Hers was the best by far. I've watched it twice and may return. KUDOS and thanks!

You are so detailed and clear in your explanation! You helped me figure out a problem from a different tutorial I couldn't wrap my thoughts around. It's because the person didn't explain as thoroughly as you. Amazing as always! Thank you Belle!
Thanks sqbelle...been watching a few of your videos...all very understandable. I use something similar to 2nd method for "instruction overlays" (i.e. top toggle is semi-transparent which shows the users how to use dashboard - helps when user may only use dashboard once a week/mo and may forget how to use and you can't be there when they use it). Keep up the great tutorials!
Thank you Mel! Very much appreciate your kind comment, and for sharing the use case. I am very thankful with both Show/Hide buttons and navigation buttons - they've simplified a lot of things that used to be more complicated in Tableau :)
Thank you for the video now i have understand that how someone created that buttons on dashboard you have taught in very simple language thank you for making the video
Hi ,Thanks for sharing valuable tips, just wanted to impress on regarding method-2 by using show/hide (how if we have more than 2,3 sheets to swap sheets like method-1 )
Great video, very useful and as always perfect explanation. Just a question, is it possible to use these techniques to show / hide parameters or filters section?
Thanks to this video, I was able to swap sheets using the parameter drop down. The problem I found is that the content of the sheets being swapped is static and my sheets also have filters. Is it possible to be able to swap the sheets based on changes to a filter value? (that way you no longer need to use the parameter dropdown and not confuse users with 2 dropdown options)
Thank you Stanley. I think there would be some. Using parameters will require more logic, but can be more flexible are you're not limited to just 2 selections. Hiding containers and other objects could affect performance, because you are potentially processing more even if you're showing just a few of them.
Thank you for the video, it really helped me learning how to use parameters and filters to good effect. The only issue I'm having is that my charts don't fill the entire view. They are set to entire view, the titles are hidden, they are all in the same container and I don't have the push pin showing. If anyone has a solution, you are a genius and I appreciate you!
You may create two blank calculated fields, and add one to rows shelf and other to column shelf. Do the formatting to hide labels and pane dividers and you should be good to go. This happens to all charts that do not have pills in row and column shelves such as bubble cluster chart, pie, etc
Hi sqlbelle, Thanks for the video. I need one help where, I have a sheet with Bar and some filters and I also have sheet with Line chart, I want the same filters to be applied from bar to line when chart selection is being done using parameter filter. Could you please make a video. Thanks!
Thank you for this detailed instruction. However, I ran into some issues while using the 1st Method. I noticed my visualizations (Graphs, pie chart, etc) with filters disappear as soon as I add and configure the "Chosen Chart" to the Filter. For example, I have a sheet for the Top 10 Sales Person that is created by using the filter to filter by Top 10. The Pie Chart disappears as soon as I add and configure the "Chosen Chart" filter.
Can you give some idea on performance improvements regarding calculations (beside LOD is bad) ex: Case vs IF statement Parameter integer values with string label vs string parameter with equivalent string value. ... Is it worth tweaking? Thanks
Hi. swapping charts is working fine on graphs and maps. But I'm trying it on treemaps, and it is not working when I put all the treemaps on the dashboard. I also checked the "fix height" pin. I haven't fixed the height still it is happening that way. Can you guide me on how I can fix this?
Hi sqlbelle, I am using sheet swapping, like example mtd ytd qtd + i have to show the % difference with the previous mtd ytd and qtd by using 2 parameters one for dates and another for sorting, the percentage difference of current and previous. But my requirement is i have to make all these on a one sheet not by using 3 sheets.. Any idea how to do this. Thanks in advance
When I add the calculation to the filter for the charts I want, why do my charts disappear on their own worksheet except for the first worksheet I added the calculation to? They'll show in the dashboard as normal but not in their own respective sheets.
@@PatrickBateman12420 any idea of how we can implement rank functionality with partition on the column which is not in view. I added the column which I intend to use for partition to detail marks card. But still I don't find way to include it as a partition.

Hello - there are a couple possibilities that come to mind. First, check the "pin" icon, it's likely it's set to fixed width or height. Second, depending on the type of chart, there may not be enough details to take up the full space. You may want to check if that chart is set to show entire view. Hope this helps.

How can we show/hide for multiple sheets?
ma'am, If every individual sheet is contained a set of filter options, then how it will be managed... if we are moving one sheet to another?
When I add the calculation to the filter for the charts I want, why do my charts disappear on their own worksheet except for the first worksheet I added the calculation to? They'll show in the dashboard as normal but not in their own respective sheets.
Does this only work when data is from the same source for all charts?
I tried method 1, somehow the charts are not aligning themselves in the container. I used crosstabs for 3 charts and they are not adjusting
Indeed, that's a common problem when using sheet swapping on viz vs. cross tabs. You can partly fix it by playing with inner padding.

New feature in Tableau 2022 or higher 'hide visual based on a value' is much more efficient I guess...
