Charlie's old ALX400 'Trident' bus in Lewisham 😀🚍👍

- Doubledeckeranton is at Lewisham bus stand and talks with 'Charlie' a Stagecoach bus driver who works in South London!
Charlies old bus is a 'Trident 2' model, Alexander Dennis ALX400 with an 8.3 litre turbo diesel engine displacement!
When these buses were introduced in the late 1990s, they were ahead of their time being one of the first buses to have low floor access, which was a lifeline for 'wheelchairs' ♿ and prams/buggies! 😀🔝👍🆒️
These buses have a 'less comfortable' driving position (pedals positioned steeply) and driver Charlie agrees that the driving position can be uncomfortable after a few hours driving in service! 😟
Anton used to drive these old 'trident' buses on route 172 & 381at his former Abellio garage (2012-2016).
This particular bus is from the year 2003!
The tridents have very 'little passenger legroom' and have a rare 'side facing' 2-seat arrangement near the central passenger exit door!
They also use an old style of destination blind that is seen to become a dying breed on the streets of London! 😢
The frontal multi-destination blind was once seen on all London buses (front, side and rear) going back through the decades.
The 'vintage' Trident has a large seating capacity (68 seats) compared to more 'modern' buses, such as a MCV Volvo Evoseti which has only 62 seats.
This vastly decreases legroom for passengers, even when extra seats are available!

I don’t even know how I found you Anton and I’m not even particularly interested in busses. But yet I still find myself watching every video, seeing what you’re up to or what you’re driving and I love every second of it!
RUclips needs more creators like you; people just making videos about things they have loads of interest in and are passionate about.
😭😭😭😭😭I been on a Trident on the 47 and 136 I will miss tridents 😭😭👍👍👍👍
...I'l miss them too...!!!
They are on the 199 now catch them while you can!
TheOriginalWray cba
They’re still running in Stratford on the 86. East London has more allocations than South East
Some are still in service on the 177?
These things are legends. I’m more of a Volvo person, but I love the speed of the tridents 🔱
Something I used to love before the Enviros came along was that every operator operated different varieties of buses; it made it much more easier to work out whether or not to run for the bus! Now it's mostly Enviros running services.
That's one of my favourite bus models to ride in London PERIOD. I really do hope AD consider making new hybrid versions of this specific model. This bus is a gem, and shouldn't be fully scrapped, but modified, with the Enviros.
Fair enough :D, they are classics, so you would like them to try get the usual 4 cylinder from e200s with electric motors as usual, or try making a micro hybrid like new experimental E400mmc micro hybrids? :)
@@damienmanu117 Why not both? :P
They could do both types of hybrid drivetrains, 4 cylinder electric hybrid for short routes and high traffic, limited speed routes, and new 6 cylinder micro hybrid for longer, higher speed routes
ALEXANDER DENNIS ALX 400 FOR LIFE!!!
cant argue with that
plaxton presidents are better 😂
@@omsi2explorer892 alright fine both of them are good
I love having these down in plymouth still as there beasts just so much power in them still and fly up the hills
miss these buses
ALX400 1998-2019 you done us proud
I catch this same bus to school everyday !!!
everytime i had to take the 5 bus when i was younger and got on this bus i always got excited about it just seemed special to the buses i normally used
The stagecoach south west alx400' are absolute beasts, the 05 /06 plates sound epic when you are stuck in traffic and passed by one going the other way but are starting to be replaced too.
Man I remember riding those stagecoach buses in east london. 473/262 and they were awesome
I remember when I was a young kid I was struggling to go on a staircase on a Enviro 400 up and down lol
These are rare on the 261 but i will miss these on the 208, 136, 199, 47, 54 i especially liked the older models of these.
KingShades yep I will miss them I never knew you watched him
I miss them on the 269 and now I’ll miss them on the 61, 208 and 261!
The worst is when you stand near the door and people keep pressing the bell .
Ikr
I know those are all the buses close to my home as well
I used to love driving these when I was at Bromley Garage.
I miss those buses!
U can find them in Birmingham
number 14 chemsley wood to Birmingham new street
There will be some cascaded around the U.K. in various towns and cities, maybe rural too, for school services.
This is my favourite bus.
Merry Christmas double decker anton!
...Merry Xmas Charlie...!!!
Have a gud 'un 🎅🤶😁👍
Used to ride these on 241. Seats are VERY COMFY!
I know, very comfy indeed! I remember taking this route quite often to Stratford, these ALX400's were fantastic buses, shame that they're gone... Now they've been replaced by those plastic Smart hybrids!
I used to take the ALX400 on route 97 and 61
I use to ride the 47 on these, really good memories
Which exact date did these got withdrawm
I used to love the 136 when it ran with Tridents. I still like the 136 route and I like the MMCs but the Smart Hybrids are just horrible. ALX400s are the last proper buses left, they suit routes like the 47, 56 and 86 so well but alas their days are nearly over
Intercity 43 Yeah I agree
Ayr has some ALX400s
Haha nice one Anton and Charlie. He usually does 336. Only 3 of these left at Bromley now!
2 now.
Now
Long live the beautiful Trident ❤
I learned to drive in these! I thought they were a cracking bus! 😎
Great video anton these are on my local buses although we haven’t got the middle door there great buses BEASTS always nice to have on a country run get some great thrash 👍👍
Tridents have always been my fave buses, on Arriva and Stagecoach.
There are metroline ALX400S used in the 266 bus route but they are rare!
It's me, Charlie, DoubleDeckerAnton! Sorry for the late reply. No excuse. Glad I met you in Lewisham that day, watched your vids months before! Top man, keep making videos! I'm subscribed!
Your welcome Charlie. Good to meet you in Lewisham...🤗
Great video Anton and have a merry Christmas and the tridents are my favourite buses especially the alx400s as I grew up on them when they used to work the 121,317 and 279. Also Metroline and First's plaxton presidents on the W8,82,191 and 263. I'm going to miss these buses and that bus still had the year of the bus sign from 2014. 2003 buses are quite rare now but the 191 uses WVL111 sometimes which still has the grey skirt and old blinds.
The Transport Hub Yh I remember the days of shopping in Morrisons Wood Green and taking the old 121 to my house. Those were the good old days
omgitzmo Yes they were good days.
childhood memories of these buses for me
Thank you Anton! Tridents are my favourite buses of all time, especially the ones that used to be at Bow and operated on the 8
Yes, for me it was headroom, feel and engin power.. quite nice look as well.
@@paulchance3766 Tridents are lovely buses. Shame they’re no longer in London.
Mk2 ALX400. Quite unusual nowadays. Great video. Have a cool yule Anton.
This is every school bus known to man , I have no idea how RUclips took me here
In Singapore. SBS Transit have Dennis Trident but with Duple Metsec and 3 axle wheels. this bus retired and scrapped in 2018
Trying to see that on 277 in the old times around like, 2014 or something, really loved their voith engine, can't believe they were withdrawn.. I love these buses to be honest.
Yes, it's very sad they have gone. Only memories now.
@@DoubleDeckerAnton Only the memories coming back there, Anton. Charlie, your one lucky ducky!
I remember the ones on the 277 when they was new! Ahh the good ol days
@@eastlondonventures hi my roblox friend im Jesse btw. These buses were good in 241
Great video.☺️ I love these buses, they are my most favourite buses in the world.☺️ I love the sound of the engine in these especially in these voith versions that Stagecoach London have.☺️
The Dennis trident alx400 is one of my favourite buses ever and I grew up with these in East London for 16 years now and it's sad to see them leave London there better than most newer buses nowadays especially the stagecoach ones and my local stagecoach depot West ham still has loads of these
thank you for showing Charlies old bus Anton
Listen to that beauty
Stagecoach rock - best fleet and best interior! ❤️👏 No offence Anton! 😉 Tridents are legendary!
Merry Christmas to you and yours mate. 😁
Who remember tridant titan b15 slam door buses
Great video Anton sorry I haven't been here for a while but none the less a great and interesting video
Great video Anton!
These are my favourite buses especially when i was a kid. They are fast, reliable and can be fixed relatively easy. I will miss these 😭😭😭
"I don't know how old it is"... right there on the number plate, dude.
I'm a 261 regular and miss these dearly 😔
Used to love driving these tridents. The sound they made with the window open going past a building hahaha! Thumpy! I got my mate to video me while I was flooring one that had a slight fueling issue, it was trying to chuck 3 times more diesel into the engine than it should, it would take off fucking hard whilst leaving a massive plume of black smoke, always good when the idiots try passing you as your pulling off and suddenly you accelerate like shit off a shovel and the side exit exhaust pointing straight at them just dumps black smoke all over them lol.
Dublin Bus had ten of these (DT class), also from 2003, and with the 8.3 litre engine. They were single door buses, and didn't have the side seats.
They ran on the 19 and 19A when new, but only stayed on the routes for a short time. They moved to another garage, and then spent most of their lives on peak-times only routes, but strayed on to off-peak ones the odd time.
I don't think they were well favoured by maintenance, unfortunately. They were very quick, and the regular drivers of them knew how to get the most out of them using plenty of 'kickdown.' They were best experienced on straight open roads.
And that is why I always sit on the driver's head...well, not literally of course. Lol.
That ALX is in surprisingly good condition, much better nick than few still hanging around Huddersfield.
Andy Richards I always saw that thing when I was little, what did it do, could u actually look down at the driver?
The Tridents were fantastic Buses shame there gone now I miss them
Ahh i have been waiting forever for this video!! I LOVE the ALX400 some of the ALX 400 have at the back of the upper deck the long bench then 2 sets of seats facing the bench on each side like the lower deck at the back its perfect for a big group of friends plus it sounds amazing they used to dominate the 47 and the 199 but catford got rid of a lot of theirs i belive they only have 2-3 left and the sams with bromley!
I seen those long time in 2017 in February I tried 238 old buses on alx400 check for legroom
These buses are like a rocket 🚀
ALX400 for life.
I've been on this bus many times
Will miss these. Hoping to go up London in February and see these in their twilight months. Merry christmas to you.
Nice buses those ones are. When I lived in London until 2015. We had the SN53 reg ones on the Route 94 that were SN53 reg ones new to London United in December 2003 and most lasted on the route until 2013 and the latter were withdrawn in 2016. Great buses and there are models of these made by Creative Master/Northcord Model Company in various liveries but they are about £25 per model. Some are even more if you collect model buses.
Merry Christmas mate and stay safe and a happy new year.
Sad to see my childhood buses going.
@Akamveer Bansal Nice, to be honest I got bored of them at one point and wanted different types of buses but now I regret it as they're soon to be gone.
I like buses
I wish these buses could come back, they were much quicker than these brand new ones of today!!
Our 3 Axle Dennis Tridents in Singapore were originally meant for Hong Kong but ended up in Singapore
They were retired in July 2018 but as far as I can remember, the legroom on the lower deck is reasonable as most seats (except the last row, 8 forward facing seats located adjacent to the rear door and 2 seats between the front and rear door)
As for the upper deck, the legroom was horendous
Down at my little depot in Cornwall pretty much our entire fleet is tridents. We used to have these alx400s but recently got rid of them for some 2004 East Lancashire deckers. I like the tridents and love the grunt from the 8.5ltr engines. Makes a big difference on hills where we drive. I'll have to try and get a video of once of the gaps we take those buses through... Might have a picture somewhere of me driving one of the old volvo olympians through
Great video Anton
HAVE A LOVELY CHRISTMAS🎅 and i hope you get tons of cards and presents, you deserve it after all O the hard work you have done.!!! 🎅🎅🎅🎅
love this buses on the 210 best bus best route
They are the best!
These buses are still everywhere here in Birmingham
Amazing bus!!! Great video bro
...big thanks Will 👋😀👌
awesome i love tridents still llooks new
Amazing bus
According to the latest fleet list there are 54 in total left in London
Where can I get a hold of that information
Xenon Games ukbuses.co.uk. Then select Stagecoach London
Keep up the good work
Merry Christmas
...thanks Rehana...have a lovely xmas yourself..😊🎅👍
First like!!!!!!! 👍. I love the ALX400. Shame they are going soon tho. I do need to go kit and upload them to RUclips as well. They are really good buses.
RIP ALX400 1998-2019!
WHY DO THEY HAVE TO BE WITHDRAWN!?😢😢😢
that was the last trident i went on but on the 61, i miss this bus! :(
Intesting video
Will be a shame to see these go still get run on the 96 to bluewater and used to use them all the time in romford. Fond memories of this bus
Great video as always well done Anton
I often take the 158. And its normal to see an ALX400 on the route.
Great video, excellent review and good to see a shoutout to the 158 bus, fairly renowned as being the last route with the type now. The 128 also uses them under Arriva but with Volvo engines.
What did you think of the Lazzerani seats on board? I find them quite comfortable.
If possible, could you make a video of a Scania OmniCity? Quite a unique bus type and the legroom is amazing. May require you to go out your way for it though.
I don’t know if they’re around anymore, but there a lot of the OmniDekkas which used to be at Anton’s company near me, which I find to be really nice
Great video as always Anton Merry Christmas. Hope you have a great time 🎅🏻🎄🎁😀
Great video! These will be gone soon, 5 of the new smart hybrids are in service already, the 261 also sometimes uses 61’s buses (19131-19140) which are going too. It’s really sad that all great buses are going.
I've been on these buses on the number 5 and 115 I will deffo miss them before they went to Go Ahead London
Anton I gave you a wave at North Greenwich station a few days ago!! Good to see you love the videos!
Was he driving the 188, if he was, I was on that bus!
@@BusesinLondon345 Yes!!
Amazing voith 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Haha they're the busses I remember as a kid. I used to look down at the driver
Here in greater manchester we dont have back doors we only have front doors so that means that people exit and enter from the front which means that we have more seats on the lower deck.
Yeah they are always on the 158 I use it pretty often.....they have the comfiest seats
Still got a few of these Tridents at Herne Bay. Few of them ex London ones. Can be a nightmare to drive with their jerky brakes which are either on or off. But still enjoy driving these old school buses. Merry xmas to ya Anton ;)
I swear my school bus is this exact type
Used to drive this route many years ago. Used to terminate at Bromley Common then
My town still uses tridents like this but slightly older I believe as they’re ‘W’ reg plates 😂our ones also don’t have the middle doors & slightly different seat layout downstairs, the wheelchair space is on the left opposite the stairs & there’s two sideways seats next to the staircase (where the wheelchair space is in this one) we lost a trident a few weeks back as it was sadly turned into a open top bus by a bridge
These are nice buses. Better make use of them while I can. =)
I always get on an ALX 400 twice a day each weekday to get to college. I use Brylaine in Lincolnshire. The oldest I’ve seen from brylaine is a V reg. however all of them from 51 up start with LX in their number plate.
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year Anton keep up the Videos in 2019 always fun to watch
Down east London Area there still couple of this buses left remember when there were new Alx 400
Anton just seems like a generally nice guy. Wish I had you as my driver, I'm from up Sheffield/Rotherham Area and the bus I always catch to go to college the drivers are normally seem a bit miserable. Not nasty or anything tho. There is this one who seems pissed off when you get on the bus but cheery when you get off tho. Love your vids :)
There nice buses to drive
1:53 yes! North London, I occasionally take the 158 from my college to my house, I like the layout cuz I can come down the stairs and go out the door, whereas on newer buses, I go down the stairs, shift left a bit because of railings and go out. Out of all routes u said 158, quite shocked lol
At the time of filming this, the 158’s main allocation was ALX400s, so that’s probably what Anton sees regularly as he lives in North London.
5:12 very handy to point that out
You are lucky, becuase these are about to be replaced with brand new Enviro 400MMC's.
As for this bus, this layout with the rear door so far forward is a feature unique to the Stagecoach ALX400's. I remember these well, as when I lived in London, i used to catch them on Route 269 (which is now run by Arriva with VDL Wrightbus Gemini 2's)
Fabulous video of my local route Anton! I hope to find Charlie on this route and/or the 336 as that is my closest route to me possible.
Have a good Christmas! 🎅👌😃
We have these in dagenham use to be in 174 175 and others great video
The ALX400 is one of the last greatest buses in the UK, we still have quite a lot of them in service around the Midlands. It will be a shame when they go. :(
and love theme on the 472 and 261`
