As a fly fisherman for years I'm really excited for this. Glad your giving it a go bud ! Yemen ! Edit. No heckle here . Your doing fantastic. More please. Cheers from N.Y !
Love it Brooksy. A few years ago i decided to teach myself how to fly fish with 0 experience and no one to teach me. This is the stuff that makes fishing so amazing! No matter how much you know there’s always more. Great vid, keen for the next one.
So stoked to see this move to fly fishing, this is the transition we all didn't know we needed!! Can't wait to see your high quality content with a fly rod. Would love to see you stalking some Oz bonefish!!
They set you up with some very nice gear but there are a few things you should probably still get: Some fly fishing gloves that have soft leather pads on your fingers where you strip your line trough, stronger fish that run hard and fast will burn tf out of your fingers 😂, and when you do some streamer fishing its also gonna keep the line from slowly grinding into your skin, thats especialy bad with salt on the line and its a spot that takes ages to heal since you move it all the time. Then get some streamers, im sure matt could point you in the right direction on what to get, you could probably also tie easy patterns like clousers yourself which saves you a bit of money if you already have some tying stuff and a vice. Then probably get some casting practice in but you will get good over time, also casting and shooting different lines (floating, sink tip or full sink) is quite different, fly casting is a lot more complicated compared to spinning gear but there is a lot of stuff about casting techniques and casting different line types on youtube, or just learn stuff from friends who know what they are doing 😂. Maybe learn some loop knots for your fly connections like the non slip loop knot, perfection loop..... just use what you like and maybe do some knot strenght testing with a scale, loop knots are very important for fly action since you dont have a swivel or splitring to act as a hinge for a free better action. There are some foam knobs that you slip over your fly reel knob, they are light so your reel is still balanced and doesnt wobble on fast runs and it avoids getting your knuckles busted by your reel handle when you let go of it when a fish runs, maybe see if you can find some of those. Also maybe put a cover over your reel when you are not fishing to protect the flyline from the sun, this will make them last a bit longer. Also dont really trust those welded loops in fly lines, they can fail, something like a nail knot is more secure but do some research on what to use on heavy gear like your 10wt. Other than that you are probably set, you will just learn stuff over time just like when you started using spinning gear 😄
Love to see this, I’ll be watching this series with enthusiasm. I want to get into fly fishing this year and love seeing other people doing the same. You need a net man. That’s how you land a fish fly fishing. Or just Brooksy him into the boat. Well done!
Yes, stoked to see some fly fishing mixed into the vids! After doing a Christmas Island fishing trip in 2019 one of my dream trips is to fly fish and travel Australia. Such an amazing variety of fishing you guys have down there.
Brilliant effort for someone unfamiliar with the fly it gets easily, saltwater fish run so well, I've mostly fly fish freshwater but will make the move to saltwater a little limited in the UK but still some fun can be had.
man love the flyfishing videos. i stopped spinnin since i discovered fly fishing. it changed my live. Loved seeing the joy on your face when you realised you hooked that fish .. My best from Belgium.
Heck yeah, awesome video mate, can't wait to see more fly fishing!! Peter Morse's Arbor to Fly DVD is great for all fly fishing knots. Having some braided mono is also very handy.
Ooof got me motivated to drag the old fly gear out. Got an 8wt custom built but Jonesy on the GC in like ‘98 and used to spend my school afternoons tying my own flys. Remember drifting into Queenie schools in the Broadwater and on fly it was so much fun!
Nice work Brooksy, i started the self taught journey with trout in Tasmania and has been great to extend the learning to saltwater. Look forward to seeing more fly fishing content...amazing fishery you have up there. That new Sportsman looks ideal for fly fishing.
I could watch this content all day. I never trust those pre-made loops on my fly lines though. Morsie has some great tutorials on making your own braided loops....and they've never let me down. Looking forward to more swoffing
Started fly fishing for Corbina in Southern California, USA three years ago. All off the beach in ankle deep surf. One of the most exciting fish to catch on a fly rod in California.
I am no professional but well past average enthusiast levels in fishing, and I have fallen in love (again) with fly fishing many times in my years on the water. Many will say it’s “the only way” or something along those lines but I’ve found there’s so many ways to enjoy fishing and as long as you are doing it for the right reasons, there’s no harm in changing gears as you wish. One thing I can say for sure- fly fishing experiences will make a spin fisher a better spin fisher, and the other way round also. There’s overlap between all techniques and somebody who spends time mastering many styles will reap the benefits across the board. Excited to see what you learn and carry with you into other types of fishing, and looking forward to seeing you put that bug chucking rod to work!
Im one weeks pay away from ordering my first ever flie outfit, and the thought of having to start my whole catalogue of fish all over again on flie is REALLY EXCITING! and daunting! really enjoyed this Ep bro, and having only ever landed one tuskie, I genuinely know how you must feel! take care brah
I have about the same story with fly, I did quite a lot of salt fly in a really bad area for fishing salt fly... I could go months between fish after fishing almost daily but it was always still fun. I love casting fly.
Stoked to see you picking up the fly rod Brooksy. Looking like a full blown fly fisherman. Variety is the spice of life mate. Hit some creeks for a jack next. I bought my first fly rod a few weeks back, spooled her all up then realised I had to change it to right hand and that I'd wound the line the wrong way around the reel. Classic fly kook. surely left handed is the go. Keen to hear if you get used to it or not.
I learnt myself to fly fish in the High Canadian Arctic. - Man I caught some absolute monsters, up to 70lb's. Used Thomas & Thomas 9wt with Abel reel.....Massive Lake Trout, Arctic Char, Pike, Innconnu and many others, but Char and Lakers are the absolute best....... The BEST fishing is up around Taloyoak in Nunavut, and also North of Tuktoyaktuk, and also Ulukhaktok ( Holman ). Look those places up. Millions of lakes and no people, except a few hundred Inuit. I can't wait to get Permit/Bones and GT's on fly in FNQ and Barra.... You are one lucky bastard Brooksy!. Do yourself a mischief mate!
I've gotta say Brooksy, this fly fishing bit, along with your beloved cat (Yeaman?) makes me like you a lot more. Seems there's more depth to Jonny B... And the GT on the fly video? OMG. The stuff of dreams.
Absolutely loved the episode Brooksy , I started the same journey a couple of years ago and bloody love the fly now. Nothing like a new challenge to re stoke the fishing fire 🤙Ticked off a Banga on topwater fly this summer on the Gold Coast myself, so stoked ! Can't wait for more of this stuff mate , that tuskie was next level !! 👌 epic
Brooks, That was Amazing. I think you should try for a Big Spanish. Use Steel leader Ofcoarse..Here in the USA I fish for Musky sometimes with a Flyrod. The strike is sometime you'll never forget. Stay safe Watch out for cyclones. GOd Bless
doing the fly again must have brought bak some great memories wen u where a lad. another string to the bow now mate. looking forward to the reef flats n barra action with the harry potter.
A trick I learned to putting the right amount of backing on reels - fill your reels in reverse (ie fly line first), then fill your spool with the backing line to the correct fill amount. Then use an empty spool and battery drill to take it all off again, transfer it to another spool with the drill again, then finally back onto the reel. Sounds like a pain in the butt, but honestly with the drill it only takes a minute to take it off/transfer it, and then you get a perfect fill every time.
its a fun way to fish, watch a few Lefty Kreh casting tutorials and to put hurt on a fish in the fight keep the rod tip low and use the power in the butt of the rod, love your work
Hahaha! Unreal Brooksy, well done. I'm all the way down in Sydney but if I can be of any help with your fly fishing then reach out. Bring on more Aussie fly content! :)
Yup for spoiling. Put the fly line on then tie the backing on then reverse it onto another spool of any king then spoil back onto fly reel. Sounds a pain in the arse but gets you more backing on than by guessing.
Hi Brooksy, yeah more fly fishing content would be good thanks. Would be cool to see you tie a fly (going back to your roots) and catching a fish on it. For me that is one of the most satisfying things in fishing. Cheers, Mr Sierra 🤙
Amazing too see the videos ahead always wished there was more good fly fishing content for gts etc the way yous film. love from Scotland ( a salmon fly fisherman)
Not sure if anyone's mentioned it yet put usually you need to take the spool off and there is a pin or lever that needs to be flipped to change the direction of the reel. Then you unwind fly line and backing and wind it back on going the other way since the spool will be facing the other side to change the reel from right handed to left, all knots and everything should be good just need to wind it on the other way
It’s great that you’re feeling the buzz of fly fishing - can’t wait to see you into a GT with that (very nice indeed) rig! Hello from freezing cold England. 👍🤡
Fly fishing is a ton of fun but you need the right spot and conditions, that's why I pretty much stopped doin' it but if you have a boat and those flats... Damn!
Great vid mate. Regarding switching the reel to right hand wind theres generally a retaining clip that holds the drag in. Its usually just a matter of unclipping it flipping the drag assembly around so the drag works correctly then you just flip the reel around and reverse the line onto another reel and wind it back on the correct way. Fly reels are pretty basic kit mechanically compared to any other reel short of an alvey. Have fun mate.
Bahahahaha trust you Brooksy. Nice work. Good to see that genuine stoke. Can’t wait to see you hook Coral Trout or spanglies in blue holes with bommies everywhere 😂 This is going to be really good watching you progress on the fluff 👌🏼
I fly fish for Aussie bass and there is nothing like it! You can make a mint looking cicada pattern out of orange/yellow ear buds and a permanent texta with some dangles! Getting booked off the top on fly is peak fishing for sure
One trick I’ve learned is initially spool it up in reverse. Reel the fly line on the reel, then the backing when full cur backing, strip off and flip tying backing to the reel and reel it up and your done with not wasting backing or not getting enough
Christ that was cool man!! 👌🎣 Just a tip for connecting braid to flyline you can also use a nail knot and its a lot smaller profile to go through the guides at high speed! Its what I use for Salmon! Sick to see you fly fishing mate can't wait to see you do some more!! 🤙💪
@@JonnyBrooksFishing Ya man it's a great knot as it gets tighter the heavier the fish is! It's not done me wrong!! Looking forward to seeing you catch some giants on the fly! Sick! 💪🤙
Hello Brooksy. This was a great video and con grat on your fly rod catch. It must have been a great feeling 😀And I hope you do more of this. I have a question for you. Do you know Andy from Andys catch and cook ?He has'nt posted a video in 2023 .Do you know if he is sick or something? Looking forward to your next video. All the best 😀
Easiest way to know if you have enough backing is to grab the fly line out of the box while its still wrapped up and just put in the middle of the reel and if it doesn't reach the edge of the fly reel then you know you need more backing but that's for those people who like it spooled up a lot
Brooksy, you were present at the Osaka Fishing Show! I didn't get the chance to meet you there. 🤦🏻♂️ I was at the show during the first day. Now I’m back here in the Philippines🇵🇭

Hey fly fisher from washington state here. That fish handling could use improvement. The fish hit the deck hard. Probably concussion. Obviously fishing is bad for the fish all around but consider doing the big hold up over the water. Commenting because I might like to catch that fish one day.
Great to see that your making this transition or loop back to an extremely exciting and addictive form of fishing. 👍

Awesome man! Please try catch GT with fly fish reel that would be epic content! lol
That’s the plan mate
Keeping a bucket at your feet to strip line into might help in the future to avoid the inevitable line tangle
Nooow we want you to develop a fly rod with Zenaq!!! Period!!!
In future a simple double overhand loop or sometimes called a surgeons end loop will do for backing. Takes 2 seconds and never fails.
